The segment on the cookie cutter shark hit a lot deeper than I expected. As a kid growing up, I watched this show called "Animal Planet's The Most Extreme," and the CC shark made the number one spot on the episode about "Most Extreme Bites [sic]." At the time, however, there was no footage or even any pictures of the shark due to how elusive it was. Now, 20 years later, we have a pretty good idea of what it looks like and in the past decade there have actually been encounters with them. This is crazy. This man is carrying the Most Extreme torch very professionally.
Animals I would add to part 2:
    1) The hummindbird moth. These are actual moths that mimic hummingbirds for some reason. They use their proboscis like the hummingbird's beak to drink nectar from flowers, and they even "hover" like hummingbirds too. They can actually do it for longer since they don't get tired like hummingbirds, so it's kinda like when someone copies the answers on your homework and gets the higher grade. I saw one in Texas six years ago.
    2) The vampire moth. This one can be interchangeable with the previous entry. Most people think moths are harmless and don't bite, but this one does, and it's definitely cooler-looking than a mosquito.
    3) The basking shark. It's one of three major kinds of filter-feeding sharks known for its gaping mouth and harmlessness to humans. It's not harmless to your mental health, though. They have a very peculiar look, like they've been designed by Vincent Van Goh.
    4) The mega mouth shark. Like the basking shark, it's a filter feeder, but instead of keeping its mouth open, it looks like it's permanently not impressed. Rarely seen by people, probably because we aren't impressive enough.
    5) The grasshopper mouse. This mouse, despite its name and size, also hunts, murders, and eats tarantulas, giant centipedes, and scorpions. It also howls at night like a wolf. Don't take my word for it. Look up the National Geographic video. I couldn't believe it either. Also, in captivity, they've been known to kill and eat other mice.

I'll take the respect for knowing all these cool animals existed, I personally thank Zoo Tycoon 2 for introducing me to pygmy hippos as a kid, who knew that the murderous water horse has a smaller but cuter relative! Also, I can't with that clip of the baby pygmy hippo trying to nom that person's boot, it's too adorable.

I’m a bit late but if you don’t know about the specific tanuki mythos he’s referenced vaguely.. it’s basically just they have enormous balls in traditional art. Like bigger than their body. Carrying that shit around in a sled. I don’t know why. But it’s really funny regardless

By some hilarious coincidence, just about a month or so ago I made someone's Sonic OC into an action figure, and it was a maned wolf. The first time I ever made an anthropomorphic cartoon maned wolf OC and then you bring up the fact that it's one of nature's most obscure animals

Don't you just love when you find out about something you think is cool and then a few days later one of your favorite youtubers mentions that thing. I just found out about the Maned Wolf and thought it was so cool. Also thanks for clarifying big cats vs small cats, roar vs purr, it's something I've been curious about since, well forever really but haven't been able to focus on it enough to find out before I forget again

Maned wolves are really cool. They're solitary, and not that good at hunting, so they eat mostly fruit. They're chill and not too aggressive, so it's a lot safer to approach them than most other wild canids.
The name we locals gave them is Aguará Guazú, which means "big fox" in guarani.

Just bought your Book because the Hardcover is available in Germany. You brought back my love for Nature Documentaries after I lost it to the fact that everything I saw as a child was "designed" to appeal to people and that facts were often not as important as the "good" story. Thank you so much !

The Rock Hyrax is common in Jerusalem, wherever there is bare mountain, y'know, rocky terrain. They scatter and disappear at the slightest noise, so difficult to photograph. They have a pretty cute and cool way of maneuvering and running. I like watching them.

    • @suchnothing
      @suchnothing Год назад +4

For some reason the rock hyrax looks to me like a vampire version of the pika, a small mammal that's common in the mountains in Western Canada and U.S.A. They almost look like big mice but are more closely related to rabbits. I think they remind me of the rock hyrax because of how round they are, and the way they bounce over and between rocks. Pikas have bigger ears and no tusks though.

We have them over in South Africa too. You usually smell a colony before you see them. They were especially prevalent around the town where I'm from. Oh and we call them dassie. Da/see.

I believe you about the Jerusalem location. A couple of years ago I studied religion in the Middle East and was surprised hyraces were mentioned in Leviticus (the Bible) as not being kosher because while they did chew their cud, they lacked a split hoof, which made me really confused because their feet are literally the most split hoof you'll get: they look exactly like elephant feet.

3:33 You wouldn't believe how satisfying it is to know that bastard's name!!! When I was like 5 or 6-ish my family went to a wildlife museum chock full of taxidermized animals and this one huge room had all kinds of goats and things and one of the various heads on the wall that my poor eyes almost immediately locked onto was THAT THING. It messed me up SO MUCH because in my young mind I hated to think that that thing was real. But knowing its name has brought the child in me some peace I never knew I needed lmao.

    Okay oh my god.
In Animal Crossing, there are a lot of villagers classified as deer when they're clearly just based on a hooved animal, not a deer specifically. Like, some of them are more like goats or elk.
One if these characters is Shino, my favorite Animal Crossing character. But based on this videos, im now theorizing that she's just an aesthetically pleasing Saiga (no clue how to spell it, but this thing 4:25)
This is now my personal headcanon. I mean, specifically with the time stamp i gave, just look at it. The yellow/off white coloring, and the red, thin, pointy horns? Aside from the nose, it's a perfect match!

I love the clouded leopard. They are by far the cutest medium size cat, and I love the sounds they make. The cookie cutter shark is the scariest thing I didn't know existed. You've made me very aware of the horrible bully of the ocean, the orca. And to know that they can be victimized by something so small is terrifying. They eat moose for heavens sake, but can end up looking like they've been used as Christmas cookie dough just added to my nightmares.
