I believe there was an incident where a woman found a dog on the side of the road, put it in her car, gave it pats, took a couple selfies, and brought it to the shelter, only to be told she had caught and cuddled with a very confused coyote. Happened to me even.
When I moved to Idaho for the first time, I moved to a neighborhood that let their dogs roam around outside freely. I didn’t think much of it, then, when this one weird looking brown dog with a long face came up to me and started sniffing me. I actually bent over and pet it for a minute because it seemed friendly, and stayed with it until it got bored and wandered off.
It occurred to me later that I didn’t know what a coyote looked like, so I googled it. Lo and behold lol

    2)don't leave food out.
3)if you see one, just keep walking, they are pretty good at ignoring us if we ignore them.

When I was living in a trailor, homeless, we had a cat that was used to being indoor, but she was very resilient about switching to outside kitty and back again, we live in COYOTE territory, she could wander around the site during the day, but the moment the sun hits the horizon? Its crate time, i didnt play, there was also two maine coons to hunt rats and mice, she was smart enough to stay in the site during the day, but coyotes dont care once activity dies down, my mom went out in the middle of the night and one, a juvenile, was sniffing around, she told it to bugger off and it just looked at her like this 😳 and left

    • @driverjamescopeland
      @driverjamescopeland 7 месяцев назад +19

It's not "blind hatred" coyotes will straight up merc most small breeds of domesticated animals, they cause significant losses in juvenile livestock, and have an insane impact on most small animal populations (particularly grouse and rabbit). In my native state of Virginia, it's not uncommon to see spring clusters of Coyotes number 8-12... and they've predated our original state bird population to near non-existence in the southwestern/Blue Ridge areas where they used to thrive. As a kid, I rarely stepped outside without hearing the call of bobwhite quail. Now the occurrence is so rare, I've went years between them.

Our neighbors set snares in their fences and leave them for weeks, letting the coyote suffer and die over a period of days. Another person I know was told by her boss that using a shark hook baited with meat and hung from a tree, the coyote gets hooked in the mouth so it can be shot. I’ve seen such unnecessary cruelty directed at them. The one thing it did is that it made me fiercely defensive of them, and it drives me to have predator protection on my property and to become a wildlife rescue. I had some friends, a couple, with kids that lived outside of Tucson AZ. About a year after buying their house and land a couple of coyotes started showing up around their house. They are huge animal lovers and knew if they left them alone the coyotes would leave them alone. Long story short, they eventually befriended and bonded with each other and about a year later when mama coyote gave birth she delivered them under their house.
About a year after that there were 2 men and a woman on the run for car theft, robbery and assault who, somehow managed to end up at their house out in the middle of nowhere. The family was enjoying playtime and a bbq when they pulled up. One of the men pulled out a knife while the woman grabbed the youngest girl.
HUGE mistake! Mama coyote and that girl had a special bond and one scream was all it took for them to come rushing to find out what was going on. Mama immediately went for the woman who let the girl go and ran while daddy went for the man with the knife. Mama and daddy kept them busy while the couple got the kids inside and grabbed their guns while the oldest called 911.
The parents and coyotes held them there until the cop cars came speeding up the driveway. At the first sight of the police lights the coyotes skipped away seemingly as if they knew they did a great job. Only the guy with the knife needed a few stitches. The other guy had a few bite marks but didn't need stitches. The woman was shook up and needed clean underwear but otherwise alright.
The coyotes were not killed and tested for rabies only because, in the father's wisdom, he had had the traveling vet start vaccinating them the year the litter had been born. The father is gone now but the mother and the youngest girl still live there. Mama and daddy coyotes are also gone with mama choosing to spend her last couple of days curled up on a dog bed in the girls room. But 2 of the pups still visit regularly while the other 2 pups show up from time to time.
I count myself lucky to have witnessed such a special bond between humans and wild (vicious?) animals.

I see the same thing with these snakes we have at work. When small, they bite to scare you - once they get to a certain size & think they can do damage, they will flash you, bury teeth in you, & HOLD ON. We spray listerine in their eyes, & they let go. Listerine = snake mace...

There have been coyotes living near me for years (they were here first. I moved) and there's never been a problem. They're louder in the winter and they live pretty close by so I have heard them at night but they do most of their yipping before midnight so idc. You sometimes see them at night and once in a while during the day, but they really don't care about ppl, and will usually ignore you. Honestly, it's been cool and super cute hearing the pups each year start to contribute to their parents' calls.
That changed this summer. I guess some people have been feeding them and now they expect food from humans. Which most people won't give them. This has led to multiple attacks and bites, including a small child being bitten, and one attacked my neighbour's dog (the dog is fine). Unfortunately, this has meant that the city has had to kill them. At least two have been shot, but idk if the third adult has been caught yet. It's just a shitty situation. It all could have been avoided if people just hadn't fed the coyotes. Don't feed wild animals, especially large ones or animals that can cause problems for people. All you're doing is starting or contributing to a behaviour that will get the animal killed.

You know. Lord Casual, the more I think about it, the more this particular video has to be your best. It is a masterpiece! From the philosophical question at the beginning, following the screaming eagle, of course, to the subtle way you introduce Our Hero in this. I was, if I recall, unsure of what animal you would speak until you said, "coyote", to that absolutely smooth, I mean 200-year-old-whiskey smooth, transition to sponsorship, to listing the history of the hatred, (" coyotes succeed in being hated by an animal that hasn't even met them yet"! Classic!) to the transition into how utterly resilient they are. I cannot say that this one can never be topped, but I do say this is my favorite out of all your videos, including the one where you mention Geronimo the Beaver!
I have watched this nine(?) times, not counting replays in the same session, and I watch it to get that particular warm-fuzzy feeling in my heart! Hearing how you swing us all through the emotional spectrum to end talking positively... like I said, warm-fuzzies. "At some point you gotta respect the game". Love it, good sir!

Unfortunately, she disappeared at one point, and the three still young pups were seemingly left to fend for themselves. They were awfully skinny and clearly way too young to be on their own. We figured they wouldn't make it, but there was nothing we could do.
Fast forward a few months, and one of the pups somehow made it! It's still skinny, but it's lived this long, and it's looking healthier than it did before. Coyotes don't quit.

I totally agree about the coyotes. I once had an opportunity to spend time with a litter of wolf pups and a single coyote pup being raised by humans. The wolves were about a month old, coyote was younger. The owners were hoping to see if both could coexist if raised together, which was working! It helped that they were also heavily socialized with humans they trusted so odd family members was the norm. The wolves accepted the coyote as part of the menagerie. Until the coyote made any kind of noise- THEN pure chaos broke out. It seems the sound of coyotes yipping is potentially a genetic memory, one that identifies high level threats. Having such a deeply ingrained hatred for each other is impressive. In the end they found a coyote family for the pup and he grew up relatively normal after the first month.
PS this took place at a wildlife science center associated with the University of MN. It wasn't just random people with unusual pets. 👌

Sad story time: (TW: Pet death at the hands of a cop)
When I was a kid, my grandfather, who I lived with, had a LOT of local wildlife as pets, because he had a license that would let him keep any animal deemed too badly wounded or too habituated to people as long as he could care for them and meet some occasional inspection standards. One day, my grandpa and I were coming back from the store. I was...I think 6...7 maybe? Anyway, we get to the house, and I jump out of the car with all the energy of a small child, and immediately freeze because I hear a puppy whimpering. I run toward the sound because I was raised to love all animals, and I squeeze my tiny body under the front porch...and find a badly battered reddish-gold colored puppy. I scooped it up and crawled back out, and my grandpa and I rush the pup to the vet immediately.
The vet takes the pup back, and after a little, comes out, saying that it's not a dog. It's a coyote. He's about to euthanize it because coyotes are considered a pest animal in my state, but my grandpa shows off his little license to keep injured wildlife and tells him to give the pup a chance, and if it makes it, he'll keep it. Sure enough...the little guy survives, and in a month or so once the paperwork is done and the pup's passed a rabies quarantine, he comes home and is our pet. Or...should I say, MY pet, as my grandpa promptly gives him to me.
I named him Baron because he looked reddish, and it made me think of the guy on the Red Baron pizza box (again, I was a small). Baron lives with us as our pet for four wonderful years. He eats a diet of raw meat and veggies, we get him a reflective collar, we train him to walk with us both on and off lead...it's great. I go on bike rides with Baron on a leash with me and my other pet, a chipmunk named Chips, on my shoulder. (Chips, being a chipmunk, and one without a tail at that, lived for only a year)
About four years or so after getting Baron, a new neighbor moves in next door, a police officer. He sees me, a kind of 9-10 years old, playing with this coyote, and allegedly he panicked, thinking I was being attacked...and he drew his pistol and shot Baron. When I screamed he didn't listen, getting closer and shot him a few more times until he was certain he was dead. Because, like I said...coyotes were considered a pest species in my state.
TLDR: I had a coyote. He was a good boy. Cops suck.

I usually hear them more often then see them .
I was in the backyard one night and behind the yard is a lot of desert for a few blocks up and a couple of miles long . I would hear them hackling out there from time to time . At the time I didn't know that they did that when they eat their prey . Well one night I was out back and it was quiet and then I heard them starting up then I heard a house cat growl like I've never heard before. The cackles continued with more of them starting in now . The cat growled again and then just a couple seconds later I heard the cat belt out it's death growl . It was a grusom sound . Then all you heard was the coyotes cackling out there till they were done eating .
That was a couple of years before covid and in twenty years I had only seen maybe a handful of them and a bit of a distance from me or e runnin off .
During covid when most everything was closed for a few months I was seeing them all over town .
The first one I saw during covid me and a friend was sitting at the bus stop bench on the main road . Weve been talking it up and were having a few drinks for a couple of hours not seeing anyone outside .
Then we seen one coyote on the other side of the street just walking down the sidewalk of the main road all non chalant like it was nothing. We sat there and just watched the coyote strolling along on down the road . It stopped and looked towards us then kept walking down the street. That was the first one I fully got to see and experience up close and with the atmosphere at the time being late at night and how eeriely quiet it was when it happened was quite a experience .
After that I started seeing coyotes a bit more often around town until after everything started opening back up I still would spot one here and there but in the last year and a half I haven't seen one and only heard them off in the distance a few times . I would always see them solo and never in a pack . If I ran into one that I felt was to close to me I would yell like get , go on and stomp my foot and the coyote runs off .
It's very rare they will attack humans and if they do it's if they are in packs and probably most likely desperate for food . They are more scared of you but definitely not scared of your pet .
When I walk my dog one of the reasons I always carry my Glock 10 mm just in case if I ever did run into a pack coyotes and if they would attempt to go after my dog while I am walking her.

In the city/suburbs its mostly because Coyoyes will jump six foot tall fences into peoples backyards to eat their pets, alot of cats and small dogs go missing in those areas. And most of it is because of Coyotes showing up at 3AM for a snack.

People were spoiled by Attenborough and don't realize how hard it is to get people to understand animals and nature and all the guud stuff. In Native American folklore, notably the Navajo, the Coyote is a popular animal spirit in many stories. Coyote is a trickster spirit who helped create the stars, animals, and brought fire to humans. So they really deserve some respect.

@@prastarkeepers I love it! My story is about a Scorpio, a brave but very simple semi anthropomorphic (Meaning he looks like just a big scorpion and isn't very bright, but he can still act like a person) scorpion who lives a peaceful life until his full Anthropomorphic (Basically she's a fox who walks up right and is smarter than a semi) fox neighbor Venix decided to betray him and frame him for a robbery. She then allies with the Dinosaur tribes, who are basically vikings. On the way he meets his many friends, a roach thief and his neighbor, a Sasquatch bodyguard and guide he hires, a Kookaburra bard who goes along with them because he thinks they have potential, and a cat who works at a potion shop and joins the cast because she was bored.

As someone who did grow up where coyotes would yip at three in the morning, yes sometimes it did fill me with just a teeny bit of sleep deprivation filled blood lust. But overall my attitude was "Well, it's their home too."
Although for us whenever we say a "Pet missing" sign that was more than 48 hours old, we always knew what had happened to that pet. Just remember that when you are in coyote country, it is up to you to keep your pet safe. I still remember at one point my family and I were out for an early evening walk and we saw a couple of tourists settling into a vacation house for the weekend with there little yap dog chained up on a pole in the yard near the bushes. We talked to them for bit and basically advised them "Yeah, don't do that," because it was early spring thaw and the local coyotes were on the prowl for food after having come out of the winter. The people we talked to were very surprised to hear this and immediately took their dog in, but it made me wonder how many other small dogs had perhaps not been so fortunate

right? I feel bad for the pets of dumbasses that let then get munched by coyotes. Every time someone new moves into the condos where I live we warn them. Don't be stupid keep your cats inside, this is coyote land.
It just pisses me off that coyotes get blamed when the real villain is just shitty owners.

Also, if you're one of those city people who think it's ok to just drop off your unwanted pet in the country to "fend for itself" - besides the fear and abandonment you're putting an innocent through, besides dying of thirst, dying of starvation - guess what? Maybe they'll just be killed and eaten - and not necessarily in that order.
If you really can't live with that animal you brought into your home, and you can't find a taker, at least have the integrity and humanity to have it put down. Don't just leave it to die - because it WILL die - abandoned, alone, sick, terrified, and painfully. Please.
