Climate Change's Controversial Policy: Loss & Damage

  • There's a climate change policy that governments have been debating for decades. The USA recently even tried (and failed) to have the words removed from the latest IPCC report (AR6 WGII). This policy is: "Loss & Damage".
Also called "Climate Reparations", Loss & Damage is a way of seeking climate justice in the face of disasters, and will be a major talking point at this year's climate negotiations - COP27 in Egypt. So what is Loss & Damage, why is it so important for climate action, and why have countries been arguing about it for so long?

I don’t have any positive expectations for COP27. To me, the fact that it is taking place in a dictatorship like Egypt is symbolic for how little the world‘s people are heard - there is not even a right to assembly/protest in Egypt. Also, Egypt has a huge building project in its capital (where the COP is taking place) which has been criticized by architects for not having any worth there and being poorly designed, which makes many assume it is only a project to further expand totalitarianism in Egypt.

I don't expect much will be done until the people in wealthier nations begin to suffer irrefutable personal hardships. Then I expect they will demand the money to be spent on mitigating their own suffering. With any luck, the petroleum industry will lose power as they lose market share to renewable energy and electric vehicles. By then, we may not be in a position to help anyone else. I installed another 400 watts of solar yesterday. Not to save the world, but to ensure *I* have electricity in the future.

I just want to share some light on practical oximorons that are arising from these policies of taxing emission and compensating bonuses. Here in Spain big investors are economically ruining small farmers and rural people who have been the all-time keepers of woodlands and agricultural or grazing lands. Once they are bankrupt, they are buying their lands for next to nothing, with tax exemptions; in order to use those lands to plant invasive species, in order to futher reduce their carbon footprint taxes in the future. We are talking about woodlands of chestnuts, oaks, ans simmilar high wood density, slow growing, high carbon capturing species that are centuries old being devastated so that they can say they planted x trees and get tax exemptions. Those trees being mostly pines that inhibit the growth of native species, and provide local fauna with nothing; while also posing a very serious fire hazzard in high temeperature environments.

I’d like to see the G7 work on some form of a carbon tax which is used to dump extra funding into programs like UNDAC and CERF. I’m no economist so I bet there’s better solutions out there…I’m just trying to figure out some way that we ensure that some of the biggest polluters are contributing the most to the costs.

The only way wording should be altered in these reports is if all the climate scientists writing the report agree that it should. No large country should be able to force the language to be softened. It’s ridiculous.
How can we ‘negotiate’ on the climate?! We are so far into the danger zone, and we need drastic change, not petty arguing over wording… 🤦🏻‍♀️
    IMHO

Great video again, Adam. It's so important that you keep explaining some of these crucial concepts out there!
In a concrete way looking at climate reparations, it's hard to see them separate from debt cancellation. (as demonstrated by the FFF Global Climate Strikes narrative this year) The debt that countries from the Global North impose on countries from the Global South make no sense and are immoral, yet they actually make up significant parts of the budget of these GS countries. Much more than the amount of "development aid" that is going in the other direction in fact. So in net, GS countries are paying GN countries day in day out. That's astounding - and infuriating - but it makes an evident bridge towards loss & damage.

Although this is unfortunately not simple as it sounds, I personally think that the term “LONG TERM” needs be on the table. As a society/We, particularly “decision-makers”, need to acknowledge the fact that short-term and often dogmatic steps does not work for the better, at least in general.

If 2022 doesn't wake the world up, the only thing I can think of that might, will be the next El Nino. In 2016 & 2020 the world temp. increase over pre-industrial was 1.36C & those 2 years were El Nino's. Most years are 1.1-1.2C over pre-industrial. So when another one comes along in 2024-2026 my prediction is it will do so much property damage, the scale of the damage will convince most remaining deniers kick starting the political will do actually take action to make a green transition sufficient to initiate a difference in the trajectory of temperature rise so we all don't cook ourselves. If not, then we'll run right past 1.5C on the way to 2C & then its likely too late for a green transition to make a difference & we'll be into geo-engineering on a huge scale in a desperate attempt to slow climate change momentum.

Why do you think 2022 will wake up the world to someone who understands history? History is full of disasters, 1780 was the worse Atlantic Hurricane season with 28,000 dead and the Great Hurricane of 1780 with a possible wind speed of 200 mph is likely the stongest hurricane in the history of Atlantic Hurricanes. The Dust Bowl is the worst drought in American History etc etc. Why should I feak out? Because some climate cultist who does not know history told me so.

It's difficult to find an easy solution to a complex problem due to how complicated to the problem is, and such approaches require such harsh corner cuts.
The people using such measurements are censoring the info regarding the corner cuts because they are tired of the prying eyes, and crying lies, of using that information, whether true or false, for the sole sake of making progress look bad.

It is necessary to fight climate change, but in order for it to happen we will have to win a bigger fight against the powers that be. It would be much easier if climate policy was about averting the climate crisis but the forces shaping the agenda have other motives. The climate-smart sustainable development agenda is a far greater obstacle to sane climate action than organized climate change denial, or more accurately, both of those sides are agents of the same powers.

Dialogue between countries and corporation is what I consider a bridge to nowhere. Can people's inner convictions and conscience of right and wrong supercede societies perpetual lionizing of those with money and reward for their greed. That's an intoxicant that even the suffering of people in 3rd world countries and the poor of 1st world countries will not presently cause them to give up. It's ignorance and the lack of empathy that those richest will not confront, as long as there's a last villa or mansion or flowering garden they can go to they will not make the leap that is needed, imo.

Halogenated vinyl halogenated carbon and nuclear technology is lost and we have less damage. We have lost nuclear technology and we have less damage from Edison generator and dynamos power plants and vehicles. We lost use of fossil fuels for electric power and transportation and have less damage to our wallet from Edison generator and dynamos power plants and vehicles. We lost our clear skies to soot and smoke but less damage from heat and Atmosphere loss due to halogenated vinyl and halogenated carbon and nuclear technology.
    Loss and damage done.

I get what your saying but the subject is complex. Is it ok for the poor in the uk to go cold and freeze this winter. Yes unless its a huge struggle for you,do you even get it ,The reality is even in the UK people are desperate my family included. Worrying about turning heating off doesnt help the standing charges you are left with that subsidize windmills that work intermittentley and then the blades that need replacing are put where?.Climate change is a reality but the poor are also on your doorstep when it comes to energy and they are already struggling

    • @ClimateAdam
      @ClimateAdam  Год назад +2

I hear you, poppy. my view is that it's vitally important that we fight climate change. but this must be done in a way that makes life easier for those that are struggling, not harder.
times are really tough for so many families in the UK and beyond. despite that, there's a lot of evidence that fossil fuels aren't the answer. in fact, slowing the transition to energy efficiency and onshore wind power (the cheapest energy source for the UK) has added hugely to consumers' bills:
      www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-cutting-the-green-crap-has-added-2-5bn-to-uk-energy-bills/
as for digging up new fossil fuels - as mentioned in the vid, these likely wouldn't be available for years. what's more, fossil fuels are typically sold on the international market, so digging more up would very possibly just give the companies more to sell, without providing a material benefit to consumers.
      www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-10-03/uk-s-new-oil-gas-permits-probably-won-t-boost-supply-for-years
www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/sep/08/fracking-uk-not-fix-fuel-bills-economically-high-risk "Even if shale gas could be produced here at the scale needed, it would not make a dent in fuel bills. That is because the gas price is set by international markets, so any gas produced would be sold to the highest bidder and vast amounts would be needed to make any change to the gas price."
if we transition to a zero carbon economy right, we can do so in a way that improves our lives and our bills.

the 2022 floods in pakistan cost around 40 billion $, and was made 50% worse by climate change. pakistan is home to a bit less than 3% of our worlds population, but emits a bit less than 0.7 percent of annual GHG emissions, and historically emitted 0.3 percent of emissions.
while we certainly need to transform our western cities, which will cost us lots of money - the question of loss and damage is: who will pay how much for the reconstruction of pakistan?

    • @Doctor_Subtilis

Yes native plants, but also food, with agroecology we can easily grow 50% of our food in urban areas without the need for corporate vertical farms biotechnology or agrochemicals, and we can sequester gigatons of carbon heal the water cycle and give power to the people while doing so. We need to grab shovels and pitchforks and take matters into our own hands or we will be imprisoned in smart cities and corralled into the metaverse to plant NFTrees. The forces shaping the agenda will not save us, even the ones who are telling us all to panic about the climate crisis are way more interested in control and domination, that's what they mean when they say they want to save the world.
