In the antediluvian period, the world was a place full of mysteries and marked by a lifestyle unknown to us today. The Bible, in the first chapters of The Book of Genesis, records fascinating details about this era before the Great Flood. According to the biblical account, that was a time of great human achievements, but also characterized by a culture permeated by sin.

People's lives in that period were certainly different from ours. Adam and Eve, the first human beings, had sons and daughters, Cain being the first son born after being expelled from the Garden of Eden. The story of Cain and Abel illustrates not only the first human family, but also humanity's first steps on Earth.
Cain, unfortunately, became the first murderer, killing his own brother Abel out of envy. After this terrible act, Cain was marked by God and built one of the first cities mentioned in the Bible, named Enoch, after his first son.
Contrary to some extra-biblical theories, Scripture emphasizes that man was created by God as a moral and rational being from the beginning. This means that although there was intellectual and technological development at that time, there was no gradual evolution as advocated by Moderna scientific theories. The biblical record of the antediluvian period reveals that since the beginning of humanity, there has been the ability to develop tools, create cities and exploit various skills.
The Bible also reveals that people lived for hundreds of years before the flood, which contributed significantly to the cultural and technological progress of that time. This longevity allowed the transmission of knowledge and experiences over generations, contributing to the construction of an advanced society for the time.
An intriguing aspect of the antediluvian period is the question of its duration. The Bible does not specify the exact time of this period, and attempts to date it are inconclusive. The genealogical list in Genesis 5 provides some chronological data, but its primary purpose is to establish lineages, not exact dates.
In addition to technological advances and longevity, the antediluvian period is characterized by the growth of sin and depravity. The intermingling between the Sons of God and the Daughters of men mentioned in Genesis 6 resulted in an increasingly morally and spiritually corrupted society.
Despite the shadows of sin, there are also examples of faith and godliness. Characters such as Abel, whose offering was accepted by God, and Enoch, who walked with God and was translated without seeing death, are examples of genuine faith in the midst of growing ungodliness.
Noah, a righteous and upright man, was chosen by God to build the ark that would preserve his family and representatives of all creation during the flood. The end of the antediluvian period was marked by divine judgment, when the waters of the flood covered the Earth, destroying everything on it, except for what was inside the Ark.
In the light of these events, we are reminded not only of ancient history, but also of warnings about the human condition and the times to come. Just as in the antediluvian period, there are warnings about the return of ungodliness and the need to be prepared for the coming judgment.
Therefore, in studying and reflecting on the antediluvian period, we are challenged to consider not only the historical facts, but also the spiritual and moral implications these events have for our lives today. May we learn from history and seek to live in a way that honors God in all times.
