There's also the fact that House said that he used to go with his dad at multiple countries like Egypt or Japan because he was a military figurehead.

NSA I meant it in a way that since house (Hugh) does not have any Asian heritage in him. Growing up in a non Chinese environment, having predominantly English friends and parents etc
The fact that he can speak Chinese somewhat fluently is not bad .I didn’t mean it in the literal sense about the type of blood physically being in your body. I’m talking about his non Asian decent
N yes , the ability to grasp a language is definitely inherited. Not the difficulty, you can’t expect a baby from Africa to learn Japanese. You can’t expect a Japanese baby to speak French . Your genetics plays a role on how fast you pick up a language.
The difficulty is subjective, let me ask you then . Can you speak French ? Portuguese? Japanese? If you can’t, wouldn’t that imply that all language you can’t speak is difficult?

I think one funny aspect of bad accents is that English speakers are just so much more used to varied accents and bad accents and hard to understand accents.
I know for instance my parents (who speak English fluently) are horrible at understanding Punjabi or Hindi if the pronunciation is even slightly off. and that's mainly cause they just don't run into many people who don't speak that at a totally fluent and native level. So it causes so much frustration for my sister and I when we want to ask them what a certain word means or something and our pronunciation is even slightly off. We sometimes even give them the definition we think it means, we just want confirmation and they are baffled. Same with my uncle and aunt.
So we joke about how bad they are cause in English we could easily do it. If someone asked me, oh whats that horse like creature, I think it's called a zoobra. I would know, oh you mean zebra. Also doesn't hurt that I know Canadians who call it a Zebra as in a short Ze as opposed to Zee.
Like I remember my sister asking
so in that sense, English listeners are just much better at being able to understand even bad pronunciations. (I suppose I shouldn't say Bad, but rather varied and distinct)
also English has many wide scale accents to begin with as there are a wide range of English speaking countries
So we are now used to hearing native Chinese speakers speak English, Native Hindi speakers, Native Spanish speakers, etc etc

You're not learning what a word means per se, but what a person _thinks_ it means. In actuality, learning what words really mean can only happen when proficiency is reached. “你想要多少?”
    (Ni xiang Yao duo shao?)
The grammar in a sentence are a little off, especially House's second sentence about it (mental illness) could ruin one's business - the sentence has a structure leaning more towards English grammar than Chinese.
And confidentiality is more accurately translated to 信譽 (Xin Yu) than 名譽 (Ming Yu) - the two has the same meaning but the former puts emphasis on "trust" while the latter puts emphasis on "popularity".
But other than those, all in all, they were quite alright. I wouldn't be too hard on their accents because they're trying to utter a language with some peculiarly different phonetics than their own native language.

It's mostly "House making mandarin-sounding noises" haha. But honestly.. Considering most of the viewers of the show can't understand mandarin at all, I would say this is good enough effort made. As long as his mandarin sounds believable to the audience, it is job well done.

Hugh Laurie used to be a policeman in Hong Kong for a short while. I'm genuinely curious whether you can maybe hear a slightly Cantonese accent?

    • @rayliu4351
      @rayliu4351 2 года назад

@@darylvanhorne3580 No.. Not really.. Besides, I think most language-influenced accents only develop when you are at least somewhat fluent in that particular language. So unless Hugh Laurie picked up Cantonese super fast during his time in colonized HK (which I assume most people he encountered there were able to communicate in English), I doubt any Cantonese accents would show in his Mandarin.

I'm not sure House actually knew Chinese here. He doesn't answer either of the patient's questions in Mandarin. The first, he instead answers the question in English, and the second, the clip (and, presumably, the scene) end before he does. He could've just learned those specific phrases, and guided the conversation in a way that would let him use them. It would even explain the garbled delivery (but, given someone else's issue with the translation, likely not on purpose).
