Queensland here. Cold at nights 50°F but 70° - 78°F in the daytime. If I only give it a few hours sun, then put it in the shade will that stop it from bolting? Thank you. 💚
Hello there. Yes You can do it the way You described, but more efficient way would be to grow it under trees or some kind of shading net. And water frequently. When You cool down the soil, broccoli will be much less prone to bolt. Mulching is another way to help with this. I am growing mines right now under big tree, so they get direct sun from 3pm till sunset. Hope this helps a bit 🙂
Hello, well You can use neem oil, which makes plants less attractive to pests, or You can use row covers. If the problem is only caterpillars, You can use Bacillus thuringiensis spray.
Seems like there's about a 4 month growth period. Nights are below 40 in the spring here, but summers are beastly hot. Do I need to continuously move the plants daily to keep them warm, then cool enough? I planted broccoli outdoors in raised beds last year about April/May, and it didn't even start to produce heads until the end of October, after which it froze. I had zero yield. Made me very sad, 😢 as broccoli is my favorite vegetable.
Broccoli is all about timing. No, you don't need to move the plants around. Choose a variety that suits your weather conditions, there are plenty to choose from. To maintain soil temperature as stable as possible (especially in containers), use mulch. If the hot weather arrives and your broccoli isn't ready for harvest, water it more frequently to cool down the soil temperature. If you grow broccoli for fall harvest and it looks like it will freeze rather than grow full size head, try covering plants with fabric coverings. I hope some of this helps and you will succeed with your favorite vegetable! 🥦🙂
@@Growing_Unapologetically Yeah, that's what I did last year, but nothing showed up until the end of October. To be fair, last summer was hotter than usual, and we had a drought. Hoping this year will be better.

Though, if You would grow some early variety, You could grow them in less space and that could work. According You will provide high quality soil and fertilizer.

I grew these a bit later. when they are not so active and there is a biological pesticide Bacillus thuringiensis that You can use. Or grow them under cover, Like I am doing this year. Had enough of those cabbage loopers 🙄
Do they get full sun in your growing spot? I didn't know broccoli could take almost four months to grow. The seed packet for my Sun King Hybrid says 70 days!! Is that unrealistic?
Hello, these plants were got roughly 5 hours of direct sunlight, they were grown between houses, so in open ground without any shading objects it would definitely grow more vigorous. It took 4 months to grow from seed, the timing on seed packets is counted from transplanting seedlings most of the time. For example right now I am growing variety called "early green", and it says 60 days to harvest on the seed packet, but the timing is from transplanting seedlings. From seed to transplants is around 3-5 weeks (depends on the length of the day and light intensity). There are many broccoli and calabrese varieties with different time requirements. I hope this helps 🙂 Good luck growing Your broccoli! 🍀🥦
Hello, I am not sure what heavy UK rain is like, but we have pretty rainy autumn over here too and they grew pretty well, considering not full sun positioning. Also depends on the soil, if You grow in good compost, it drains really well. If Your soil is more loamy, that could cause some problems.
Broccoli can sustain heavy rains but when it starts forming a head, it can get pin rot if conditions are right. You can still eat it if the rot spots stay small. Just cut them off.
Coconut coir is more airy and also sterile. That helps with the very starting stage of germinating seeds. But You can grow in potting soil, no problem. This year I germinated most of my seeds in thinly sifted compost mixed with sand. Try and find out what works best for You 🙂 Good luck! 🍀
Hello, for broccoli plants I'd say at least 30cm (12"). If growing one of early varieties, they could do well even in a bit smaller containers. It also depends on growing conditions, if You have dry summer like I do, be prepared to water them daily in smaller containers as broccoli drinks the pot dry quickly in warm weather.
My broccoli seedlings got VERY leggy (3-4" stem with two baby leaves). I am starting over but not sure what I did wrong! They were started inside. HELP!!!
Leggy seedlings mean they are warm enough to grow, but they lack the amount of light they need to grow sturdy and strong. Either lower the temperature so they won't grow as fast, or provide them with more/stronger light.
Great question! While watching mid-way, I was thinking it looked like Kale, and wah-lah, the note that it was appeared. I hope I can find these seeds where I am.
Hello, this variety can be grown for big head (but not as big as classic calabrese) and then it will grow smaller heads after harvesting the big one, or you can harvest the main head when it’s smaller (10cm/4inches in diameter) and the plant will grow side heads with much more strength. Very rewarding and also frost resistant variety. I am still growing 2 of these on balcony in 20 liter size containers (they’ve been there whole winter and survived -12 Celsius). Their heads are smaller than the ones grown in autumn, but still 🥦🙂

Broccoli head is just ting flowers so they require more phosphorus to form. If there's too much nitrogen it can cause the plant to produce more leaves instead of a head. Try cutting back on nitrogen if you fertilizer regularly. If that's not the cause it can simply be a weather or time issue. You may just have to wait a bit more. Make sure to keep up watering and protect your broccoli from heat.
@@lexkek5625 Great explanation, thank you very much for participating in comment section! 🙂 @eighthrocket270 I suggest you try some fish meal fertilizer and give it some time.
Hello, the problem will be either in temperature or not having enough water. When broccoli plant is stressed enough, it will bolt, making flowers and seeds in order to create next generation of plants before the conditions (which are stressing it) kill it.
Hello, well with this variety You can cut the main head earlier (when around fist size) and it will encourage plants to grow side shoots more rapidly, resulting in longer period of harvesting. There are also earlier varieties of broccoli. Though, if You are looking for high volume crops in limited space, spring radishes, leaf lettuce varieties and bush tomatoes would probably be better options.
This variety is a cross between European broccoli and Chinese kale. It produces one main head and then multiple smaller heads. When you harvest the main head early, the plant will put all it’s energy in growing more “side heads” that can be harvested for longer period od time. So how much you get from one plant depends on the length of Your growing season. And also on growing conditions 🙂
Counter point, commercial broccoli is grown in ground. Also, two benefits of container gardening are the potting soil can be reused with a some amending, and you can make use of the whole plant. With broccoli, the stems and leaves are also edible. It opens the door to new creative recipes 😊
@@taschabelle798 I don't care about commercial growing - I am a home grower in pots - it would be too expensive to grow this item if i needed that much space for just one head.
Yes, broccoli takes time to grow, but You can grow as many plants as you want to make the effort worth it 🙂 Also, there are earlier varieties that take less time to produce heads.
@@Mantras-and-Mystics One of the earliest is "Early Green Broccoli" which takes around 60 days from transplant to harvest. I am growing in right now, though the main heads were not formed very well, because we've had very dry a hot weather just before they started to form heads, so some of them ended up knuckled. But it cooled down a bit recently and side shoots are looking fine. If at least those will be good quality, I'll make a video🙂 Another early variety is "Limba", though I think it's only for sale in Europe, not sure. Anyway, any variety that matures in 60-70 days after planting is considered early, by watching at this, You can easily find early varieties for sale in Your location. Hope that helps a bit. 🥦🍀
Hello, if You do it carefully, pulling from top side and pushing from the bottom, it doesn't crush anything at all, because You are using much bigger force to push it then to pull. I understand You point and yes it can damage the plant if You only pull it, but over the years I've kind of feel how much I can pull. Also the soil shouldn't be too wet, to weigh less. Anyway, thank You for pointing out! 🙂
I dunno. Seems like alot of money and time for 4$ worth of broccoli. Grow bags, soil, fertilizer and water all adds up. Need alot of soil for those bags.
Grow bags are reusable, soil is mostly compost, we catch rain water over here (as much as we can), you don't need any fertilizer if growing in compost rich soil mix. I used fish emulsion here and there as far as I remember, but it was far from regulary. It may not be worth growing for You or anyone else. But hey, maybe someone is interested in how broccoli is grown :)
Seems hardly worth all that for 4 heads after dang near 4 months. I would rather grow something else more prolific and buy that stuff at the market. That is my .02 anyway.
Well, You can plant as many plants as You want to, not just 4. I was growing 5 plants in containers and another 8 in garden. After harvesting main heads, I was harvesting smaller side heads for some more time. Yes You can grow more producing plants than broccoli. Thank you for watching and taking time to leave a comment. And good luck growing whatever You will be growing 🙂🍀

Is it to late to plant broccoli? Does it take full sun or shade
Hello, that depends on the climate You live in, broccoli likes cool weather, especially when forming head. Plenty of sun, the more the better 🌞
Can anyone explain why some use coconut coir only versus a mix of potting soil
Coconut coir is more airy and also sterile. That helps with the very starting stage of germinating seeds. But You can grow in potting soil, no problem. This year I germinated most of my seeds in thinly sifted compost mixed with sand. Try and find out what works best for You 🙂
Good luck! 🍀

I'm sick of growing cannabis in a try my hand at growing me some delicious broccoli and if I can Master broccoli I'm going to grow cauliflower
Broccoli and cauliflower are both great! Cauliflower probably a little bit more heat tolerant and broccoli slightly more cold tolerant 🙂
How deep does the container need to be please?
Hello, for broccoli plants I'd say at least 30cm (12"). If growing one of early varieties, they could do well even in a bit smaller containers. It also depends on growing conditions, if You have dry summer like I do, be prepared to water them daily in smaller containers as broccoli drinks the pot dry quickly in warm weather.

Good video
My broccoli seedlings got VERY leggy (3-4" stem with two baby leaves). I am starting over but not sure what I did wrong! They were started inside. HELP!!!
Leggy seedlings mean they are warm enough to grow, but they lack the amount of light they need to grow sturdy and strong. Either lower the temperature so they won't grow as fast, or provide them with more/stronger light.
Can you also eat the leaves!? Cause those look like they could taste a little like kale!? 🤔
Yes you can use them exactly like you would use kale 🙂👍
Great question! While watching mid-way, I was thinking it looked like Kale, and wah-lah, the note that it was appeared. I hope I can find these seeds where I am.
What size containers where those you started these seeds in?
Hello, those are 5.5cm (2.2") seedling tray cells.
Very informative.thanks
Thank You ☺🍀
How many gallons are those grow bags ?
Hello, these are 6.6 gal grow bags.
How many full crowns of broccoli do you get from 1 plant?
Hello, just one. The side shoots will grow to about a size of a fist, but there can be 5-6 of them at one time.
What kind of light brown mulch did you lay on top of the soil?
Hello, these are wood shavings.

Do you get much eaten by slugs or snails?
Sometimes, yes. Especially in open garden.
Do the white cabbage fly like broccoli?
Yes they do, you can use row covers or spray plants with neem oil, it makes the plants less attractive to pests.
Thank for your help step by step
I am glad You find it helpful! ☺️
What size fabric pots did you use?
The grow bags are 25 liter size (6.6gal).
The bottom is a square shape of 28cm x 28cm with height being 32cm (11x11x12.5 inches).

Does it only produce one 'big' head a season?
Hello, this variety can be grown for big head (but not as big as classic calabrese) and then it will grow smaller heads after harvesting the big one, or you can harvest the main head when it’s smaller (10cm/4inches in diameter) and the plant will grow side heads with much more strength. Very rewarding and also frost resistant variety. I am still growing 2 of these on balcony in 20 liter size containers (they’ve been there whole winter and survived -12 Celsius).
Their heads are smaller than the ones grown in autumn, but still 🥦🙂

There are faster growing varieties of broccoli that takes roughly 60 days from planting to harvest. I may grow some next year 🙂

(Translator)

Where do you live and when are you planting these?
I live in Slovakia (zone 6) and I start these in May/early June.
Why r my broccoli plants so much bigger? The leaves are bigger than my head..
@eighthrocket270 I suggest you try some fish meal fertilizer and give it some time.
Mine never got heads, just leggy, yellow flowers and that was it.
Hello, the problem will be either in temperature or not having enough water. When broccoli plant is stressed enough, it will bolt, making flowers and seeds in order to create next generation of plants before the conditions (which are stressing it) kill it.
Is cauliflower grown the same way
Hello, yes cauliflower is grown the same way, although You will want to protect the curds from sun, or grow some of the self-blanching varieties.
Nice video ! Thanks !
Thank You very much! :)
size of grow bag?
It’s 25 liger size (6.6gal)
Broccoli is the most hated vegetable but it's delicious raw and dressed like a salad with some spice
So it takes almost four months to grow a single head? My garden space is very limited so I need to find a high-volume crop
How much will you get from one plant?
This variety is a cross between European broccoli and Chinese kale. It produces one main head and then multiple smaller heads. When you harvest the main head early, the plant will put all it’s energy in growing more “side heads” that can be harvested for longer period od time.
So how much you get from one plant depends on the length of Your growing season. And also on growing conditions 🙂
wow nice
Thank You 😊
No Wonder Broccoli is so pricey - YOU need 6 gallons of dirt for ONE head?
Counter point, commercial broccoli is grown in ground.
Also, two benefits of container gardening are the potting soil can be reused with a some amending, and you can make use of the whole plant. With broccoli, the stems and leaves are also edible. It opens the door to new creative recipes 😊
@@taschabelle798 I don't care about commercial growing - I am a home grower in pots - it would be too expensive to grow this item if i needed that much space for just one head.
@@jeanb.5405 That's a fair point. To be honest, I don't grow it for the same reason. I'd like to try sometime, though

so much effort for so little... I only grew broccoli once.
It was good though I do admit.
Yes, broccoli takes time to grow, but You can grow as many plants as you want to make the effort worth it 🙂
Also, there are earlier varieties that take less time to produce heads.
@@Liap
Which varieties are those please?
@@Mantras-and-Mystics One of the earliest is "Early Green Broccoli" which takes around 60 days from transplant to harvest. I am growing in right now, though the main heads were not formed very well, because we've had very dry a hot weather just before they started to form heads, so some of them ended up knuckled. But it cooled down a bit recently and side shoots are looking fine. If at least those will be good quality, I'll make a video🙂
Another early variety is "Limba", though I think it's only for sale in Europe, not sure.
Anyway, any variety that matures in 60-70 days after planting is considered early, by watching at this, You can easily find early varieties for sale in Your location.
Hope that helps a bit.

Thank you so much for your kind reply. 💛
Don't remove plants from containers by the plant stim, crushes plant cells. Best to turn container over and tap bottom, so you dont damage plant.
Am I tripping or are those broccolini not broccoli?
Dont forget to eat the leaves
Replant the bottom leaves
🌈💚🍀
🙂🍀
Seems hardly worth all that for 4 heads after dang near 4 months. I would rather grow something else more prolific and buy that stuff at the market. That is my .02 anyway.
Well, You can plant as many plants as You want to, not just 4. I was growing 5 plants in containers and another 8 in garden. After harvesting main heads, I was harvesting smaller side heads for some more time.
Yes You can grow more producing plants than broccoli.
Thank you for watching and taking time to leave a comment. And good luck growing whatever You will be growing 🙂🍀
