    I'd rather have a mop, a small square brush and a small round brush .. but I'd happily swap the last for a long rigger. I tend to hold my brushes further down the handle away from the ferrule. My small round brush is a pro arte extendable brush, ideal for sketching plein air. I have a similar brush from a pound shop makeup set - less than 10p worth of brush that's fab for postcard washes! My mop brush I change often - yes it was a makeup brush originally! I'm more recently tempted by a michael solovyev brush with harder bristles in the centre for wiping out paint. I haven't spent my pounds yet. I'd love to LEARN HOW TO MAKE AN ARTIST BRUSH ...if you want to take up the challenge!

    I just found you and I’m so happy!
    I enjoy the way you explain everything you do.
    I’m completely new to watercolor and a bit intimidated. That may be due to my sad attempts years ago to do watercolor, but now I have time and I hope I can learn.
    I would love to do watercolors off the sketches and photos I did when I was young and traveling the world.
    I used to draw/sketch a lot but that seems like a lifetime ago. Hopefully I will remember how to sketch for the photos I didn’t take or couldn’t take in some places I visited. I also hope I can do watercolor off some of my old photos.
    When I was young, I was able to do a lot of traveling. I went to
    Unfortunately I am now disabled (ME/CFS) and trapped in my house along with the pain and exhaustion I hope to find watercolor to avoid those things by focusing on watercolors.
    I’m exhausted and ache all the time due to what I was told ME/CFS. So I have terrible insomnia which I feel is the worst vs the full body pain. Oh, and fortunate me, pain meds stopped working for me sometime after 27 to 40. I don’t know why it happened since I always avoided all drugs. I didn’t even take aspirin for my headaches since I knew how to rid them using pressure points.
    Enough of my cry baby B.S. I need to get my sketchbook out and see what I can do with just the one brush I have.😂 This should be interesting.🤔🤣

    I have those sizes in the Princeton line. It was inexpensive. I was pulling the Windsor and Newton Cotman #3 out for details and dropping small dots of paint within a wash. I do like your method/idea because switching to the 3 is time consuming. I just don’t want to suck up a lot of paint on a larger brush - 8 if it’s for a few dots of orchid, or an eye. And my Princeton 8 is a smidge larger and has more of a point on it- that has taken some time getting used to. If I continue working on this medium, I will move up because the Princeton is not really great actually.

    I absolutely agree with round 6! As I came to painting totally by accident while in Lockdown last year I mostly travel to desert island and anywhere else with graphite pencil & eraser, small 5 inch square sketch book and old set of 10 Faber Castle colour pencils. Only recently in January I've added a cheap traveling set and a water brush to my stash.

    I never do that ( 4:12 ) because I always try to avoid water getting into the most important and sensitive part of a brush. That's also why it's wrong, to store the brushes with the hair looking up. That way, brushes last way more. Water is both the friend and the enemy of a watercolor brush.
    I would advise getting a N1 or N2 brush for details. Be careful with sizes, because they differ from type to type and from brand to brand. A round No 6 to No 8, is usually a medium size brush, that can do a lot but doesn't excel at one. Those are great, if you travel and can't have a ton of brushes with you, or if you want to keep a low number of brushes. A good set, with be a flat, a round No1 or No2 with a very thin point for details, a bigger Mop for washes and a large flat. Specialized brushes like angle, sword etc, are grate for botanical or landscape drawings. Another cool brush for landscapes, is a "Rigger" or Long hair as they call them. They are perfect for drawing trees and brunches.

    Michelle! I am a retiree who is taking up watercolor after not doing it since childhood…so basically a total beginner. As I look around for ordering brushes, I see that brushes can have long or short handles. What does that specifically mean in terms of length?And is it referring to the metal part or the overall brush length? Thanks for your help?

    • @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
      @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber  3 месяца назад

      Traditionally oil and acrylics brushes are longer and have stiffer bristles as the paint is thicker. Oil painters don't want to lean in wet paint so will often paint at arms length. Watercolourists tend to use shorter brushes because the work is more detailed and dries faster. But of course you can use any brush that works 😊

    Is there a difference between long and short handles other than handle length? When is a longer handle used versus a short handle or is it entirely preference?

    • @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
      @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber  Год назад +1

      Preference but typically longer handled were used to keep the artist at a distance from wet oil paint. Such long handled brushes will tend to have stiffer bristles than those used for watercolor, but if you like them and get the results you want then go for it!

    • @fizzlestyxx8507
      @fizzlestyxx8507 Год назад

      @@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Thank you very much for your response. I was looking at the local shop at the brushes and saw that some were long handle and some were short. The long handles look like I would find them very awkward so I thought I'd better ask. I'm glad I did. When I go back, I will focus on the shorter handles. Money is so tight I don't really want to waste it on a brush that is difficult to use. Thank you again!
