So useful to learn of using gum Arabic to glue paints back into your palette, and also reshape your older brushes! Any tips, Michele, for cleaning the threads of your metal tubes, other than wiping or trying to get the paint off with a sponge, before putting the cap back on? It often seems when I have the need is exactly when I’m busy with a crucial step in my painting, so I feel I can’t take the time right then, and later, it’s too late to do a good job so the cap gets stuck and is difficult to remove once again. Thank you.
Not one single element I liked best as I LOVED them all. I am for the first time in my life where I can study art. I’m 65 and have used my artistic abilities in my life but unable to study or practice art. So any and all information adds to my education. So ta muchly.
So Informative, Thanks for sharing!!! You had me laughing when you mentioned that the eyeshadow didn’t make you look like a supermodel😂!!! Subscribed!!!
A fine tutorial - and created while moving house! That is really appreciated by your subscribers and fans. Thank you! My favorite trick is using gum arabic as a painting resist, and an accessory for creating sheen. Imagine one is painting an eye, and then covers the orb of the eye with the gum, giving it the moist look the eye has naturally! Going to try that out tonight! Again, thank you!!!
Mine is the painting resist tip as well. I've always had a love/ hate relationship with masking fluid and this seems like it leaves your preferred masked areas much easier to work in naturally. Awesome tip!
Hi Michele, For anyone who has "paint in the brush" issues, using The Masters Brush Cleaner and Preserver is the best product. (No endorsements here, it just save my brushes from a gluey mess, as I posted in your FB group.). Most people don't realize that even with watercolors paint can get up into the bristles and cause trouble later on. Anyway, thanks again for the very helpful ideas. I'll be putting that on my next supply run and trying these out soon. :)
I just put in an order for a few watercolor supplies and find now that I need to add another thing to my list. I will want to get this soon because I plan to paint a fabulous sunset I saw this week and want to capture the water reflections at their and expect this will help greatly.
Great video! Occasionally, a glob of paint will fall out of the palette, so I will be using Gum Arabic to glue it back in. I have been using only water..... All the tips were good!
Hello from California USA. My name is William and I am a oil landscape guy. I picked up water color because I thought it would be easy ( ya, right ). I was humbled by the complexities of the art form. Your videos have me at what I would consider a novice and have cut the learning curve dramatically. Thank you so much for the time and effort in making these tutorials for us. I will become a patron and am looking forward to some lessons.
Just another tip… You can buy Gum Abaric powder for food additives, and for about ten dollars, you’ll get much more of the stuff for the price compared to artist made bottles. You’ll have to mix the powder with water yourself though.
Somewhere along the line I did pick up the information that gum Arabic was useful with watercolors. However, I had no idea how or why it should be used so I never got any. Well, now I do have a lot of reasons to pick up a jar. Thank you for providing this great information which, by the way, I have never seen anywhere else!
THANK YOU! There was so much info that i didnt know. And i have painted in waatercolor for years. How i missed so many tips, i dont know. I love your videos and share them with newbies frquently. Cant wait to check this out!
I am in awe of how versatile Gum Arabic is given that it's a binder. I would've never thought it would have most of these results knowing how it's usually used. Tutorials like these are such precious gold for artists to learn from, teaching viewers what they didn't know they didn't know. I would've never thought to experiment in these ways, let alone to use it as a medium in general. Thank you! I learned so much from this!! I initially found this video while looking for some kind of anti-lifting or workable sealer medium. Obviously this video demonstrates how Gum Arabic is the opposite of what I'm looking for but this was incredibly valuable information and knowledge anyway, thank you!
Thanks so much. I have seen tutorials where people use it as a sealer, but in my own experiments it did not work well, being water soluble! I am using Gum Arabic in this Friday's video as a background tutorial so keep an eye out for that one :-)
I’ve looked a watercolor varnish that looks natural my whole life but nobody has ever mentioned Gum Arabic to me until I coincidentally click on this video. I don’t understand gatekeeper artist. Thank you so much for this video!! I had no clue 💜
This video profoundly changed my work with watercolors a good year ago. Thank you sooo much!!! ❤ I only started watercolor almost three years ago as a more therapeutic thing as I am suffering from cPTSD and I needed something "hard" to occupy my brain to prevent thoughts. Watercolor has meanwhile become my passion and I even sell some of my original art now. I thought I must let you know how you sort of impacted my life in a rather positive way. 🙏🏻 Regards and my best wishes from Germany. 😊
I had no idea what gum Arabic was until recently. I was going to make some watercolors with it. You’ve given me a better understanding how to use it in my paintings and on my brushes!
I left a very fine layer of gum Arabic out in a glass bowl. The next day, when I picked up the bowl, the fine layer shattered into pieces and fell on the table like tiny pieces of cellophane. I can imagine a layer on some paint medium could flake off like that and start your urban legend. 😮 I’ve used gum Arabic for restoring brushes. It might also help protect brushes when traveling.
Excellent video, no one properly give a good summary for using Gum Arabica, Hope you will also do one on Ox-Gall. And also on different OILs for oil painting.
Thank you! I had no idea that gum arabic was so versatile. I just bought some in the hope of "rewet" my dried paints in tube! A video for that would be good!
Thank you so much for the tips, all of these are great and I can't wait to try them. I was initially looking for info on how much to use when panning gouache and I got lost in your awesome tips. Thank you again!!
Will need to try! Back when I worked for Pillsbury R&D, I couldn't help but notice that they used xanthan gum in almost all their products. Thanks once again, Helen. I'm improving nicely, I think!
Thank you, I searched for what is gum Arabic used for and here you were! My favorite inspiration in watercolor. See you on Facebook In the Studio! Light & Love to you!
I used gum arabic to make metalic water colour paints. I found make up that had Mica as the main ingrediant then mixed it with a drop of gum arabic into a paste. It dries and you can easily rewet it. The mica gives it sparkle and the pigment in the eye shadow gives it the colour... opacity varies a bit based on the eye shadow or how much you mixed originally. If there is Talc in the eye shadow it will be more milky and opaque. It is lovely to paint with and much cheaper than getting a metalic paint set.
Thank you my most fabulous artist! I really enjoyed watching this video as it's given me plenty of ideas for my next paintings. I love the soft lifting technique which gives a lovely edge rather than the harsh masking fluid edge which can be too harsh at times. Also enjoyed learning about the water sheen and I will absolutely be trying that technique. Great to see you in your new home, hope it's not been too stressful for you, look forward to seeing your art displayed on the walls behind you. Also, pfft, any eyeshadow would look great on you!
Never thought these things were possible, very informative. A bit of a shame we can’t see the full extent of the shine and such so that will be a surprise. I.m exciting to know and try other things with my gum arabic. I things such videos for every medium will be a great learning video, like the difference between granulation medium and texture medium (both W&N) and the visuals with different kind of paints (staining, granulating for example) with those mediums and such
Thank you Michele. I learnt a lot from this. I am embarrassed to admit that I've been painting for about a month now and I've only just realised that dry paint means just that -dry paint, absolutely dry paint (except when it needs to be wet of course). 🤔Above all things I'm learning to be patient - not something that comes easily to me, so it's kind of therapeutic as well.
Do let me know which of these tips you liked the best. If you enjoyed this video you are sure to enjoy this wet on wet technique video: ruclips.net/video/1LiXfP1PUUw/видео.html
I think I found the one where you use it as an aid for lifting paint the most interesting , I will most certainly experiment with that idea!
Hi Michelle, can you tell me the difference between ultramarine and French ultramarine?
@@artatjules it's basically the same pigment but the ones labelled French tend to be more violet and more granulating.
Thats great Michelle I thought maybe they were completely different

Gum Arabic would be good for a yellow slicker a child wore to show plastic. I painted it back in 80’s and never finished!
You don’t need the. Sparkly eye shadow to be a super model😊

Thank you Michele. Great information.

Thank you. Watching from Namibia. SO helpful

Hi William, watercolour is very 'techniquey' but all your colour mixing and composition experience will still help you :-) It's a beautiful medium!
I have some very sad brushes that I will try with gum arabic, and am intrigued to try it with watercolor effects. Going to get some right away.
Just another tip… You can buy Gum Abaric powder for food additives, and for about ten dollars, you’ll get much more of the stuff for the price compared to artist made bottles. You’ll have to mix the powder with water yourself though.
