This is my first time watching one of your videos. I loved it! I have made every one of those mistakes at one time or another but I loved your explanations. Particularly "where are you viewing this from" and the face one. I need to explain that I love drawing and while I am not really good at it, I am getting better because of tutorials like this one.
I no longer draw, but plan to again someday, on thing I did when I did draw was to just use the same standard black and yellow pencil for everything, I knew of different hardness of graphite but on the one occasion I did I found it all a bit daunting knowing what was for what and very messy/smudgy
I am so glad that I found your channel. I'm 64 and just started to learn watercolor. I learned how to set up my palette by your videos. I haven't drawn anything since 6th grade and have been beating myself up and quitting so many times. But I'm stubborn and want to learn. You have put so much in perspective for me. Thankyou so much. You can tell that you are a good teacher. I love how you use examples and explanation the reason behind everything'. I will be watching a lot of your previous videos. Retired and looking forward to my new adventures 😊
It was wonderful to have someone show the importance so prospective in drawing. I am 83 and just started drawing, I started with my grandchildren and great grandchildren. The faces are getting better and I am learning so much from you. Thanks
Getting a proper perspective on objects is a continual struggle for me, your advice on depth etc is extremely helpful. Like the last commenter, I am 64 too, and I began trying my hand at watercolour during the first lockdown when my granddaughter said: “Come and do some art with me, Nanny.” The moment I held that paintbrush in my hand I was hooked. I’m not good, but I love it. My old office is now my craft room (though one of my daughters calls it my ‘crap’ room because she thinks that’s what I make 😂). I don’t care. I discovered your channel only a couple of weeks ago but I’ve already subscribed and watched several of your videos. You’re easy to listen to, very instructive and honest about your own shortcomings. I like that. Makes me, and I’m sure everyone else, feel they don’t have to get things perfect right away. Thank you so much 😊
Oh Michele, you're such a great teacher, not just straightforward information but humour. I only decided to learn to draw last year and my sins start at 10 and go up to 1, but the greatest of these is 1. Get involved in intricate detail which then expands and expands as I try to pack more in. I don't feel so frustrated now I know I am not alone.
Let's get Michele's subscriber numbers up to 50k. She deserves it for all the fantastic teaching she does for the art community AND for free! Yay Michele!
Totally agree!!! I love Michelle!! I’ll put her videos on while I’m milling around the house, letting the commercials play through to the end in hopes she gets a better payout(not 100%how that works but..🤞)!!! 🤘🫀🤘
I'm in my 70's, and have been trying to draw over the past couple of years, and every one of your top 10 have been my issues, thank you so much for your easy to follow and understand ways to correct them.
Great material here that most new artists don’t think about. Perspective is a hard thing to learn even when you’ve been given the basics. This is a good start and I encourage you artists out there to watch more of Michelle‘s videos. She’s a great teacher and really knows her stuff.
My “aha” moment was #2…actually realized I was smiling as I listened…never thought about this & your completely right that this is the reason my landscapes, with a building, look “off”…for this reason I don’t often do these type of paintings! Thank you Michele!
Thank you for this 🙏 Years ago I learnt to paint with Chinese brush strokes. The best tip I learnt is something you said, which is not to draw strokes with just the hand but to move the whole arm. It was shown to me as almost a dance, it was beautiful & extremely helpful when drawing
Thanks Michelle. I started to draw just 1 week ago and have been doing 1 a day. First a calculator - then a cup - a house - a small village bridge - lamp sitting on a chair. Certainly made some errors you highlighted and your video is excellent. Look forward to watching more and more importantly - improving.
@@holly50575 When you find yourself alone after 20 years marriage. Gotta do something creative! Glad I found drawing. Thought I had some talent - until I tried drawing a face! What a joke - straight to the bin.
Oh how I needed to see this!! I've learned so much in just this little bit of time from you!!! I'm 70 learning to draw and watercolor, your videos are just what I've needed!!
Hi Michelle, just found you! I want to thank you for having so many basic, basic videos for those of us at beginner level or just needing revision for confidence. Too many videos are wonderful to watch but leave us feeling so grossly incompetent in comparison, we give up. You are a born teacher...wonderful! Blessings, and many thanks!❤❤❤
I've started drawing again after many years away from this creative side of me. I started with colouring in, then sketching and shading and I've just bought myself some Derwent watercolour pencils and have watched some of your really helpful (and witty!) tutorials. Thanks for these. I am about to do the rectangles of colour of my new watercolour pencils. Cheers - and I will be back for more of your helpful hints.
I love ur channel. I'm 52 and was just diagnosed with MS My right hand goes numb a lot and it really affected my drawing ability . But I am getting better. Ty .
Extraordinary! I learned so much in this 30 minute video. You answered about a million questions I’ve had forever about drawing. I had a drawing instructor decades ago that made us all erase and start over, over and over, but she never explained what we were doing wrong and why we had to start over. I gave up on drawing for many years because that’s the impression I was left with about it, erase and start over ‘til you get it right, never having the HOW answered. Big heavy sigh. Thank you for sharing, Michelle! I’m close to tears of relief right now. I’ll be watching this many times. My biggest issue at the moment is drawing or painting from the shoulder. I don’t think I’ve quite got that yet because I have aches and pains I probably shouldn’t have, but I’m old too, lol. I’ll keep working on it. Blessings to you from Indian Rocks Beach in sunny Florida!
Beware of art teachers who won't teach drawing, usually means they can't draw. Bless you I am so glad you liked the video! I recommend Tai Chi for joint stiffness, anyone of any age or health condition can do it, I have done it for years ;-)
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber So true! In hindsight, I’d have been better off dropping the class and finding a REAL drawing instructor. I watched all of your short videos too, and also learned a lot. Would you consider doing a short that demonstrates the mechanics of drawing from the shoulder. For some reason my head doesn’t get it. Either my elbow is moving too much, or my hand is moving too much. Maybe I need to clamp my arm to my side until I get a hold of this, lol. You know, I had the same trouble back in the ‘70s when learning to cut hair, I always had my arms up too high until one of my instructors pointed to the lift at the bottom of the chair and said in a commanding voice “LOWER YOUR CHAIR,” lol. I finally got it after that. Thanks for all you do and especially for your straight up approach. So many out here on YT teach a concept, and then blast the thing away with wishy washy commentary that only confuses me (and likely everyone else). Your a star Michele! Oh, and I’ve done tai chi, but currently doing Happy Yoga with Sarah Starr here on YT. Blessings to you!
@@rmuller366 I will try and do a demo. Allow your arm to move freely at the shoulder, not only forward and back but also to the side, as if you were making a chicken wing motion, so you get a full circular motion. Your elbow can move a little. 🙂
Your sketching lessons are the best. I have learned so much from you. You are a great teacher who always knows what tips will be the most useful for beginners 💕🇨🇦
I’ve never really thought about how to use other parts of the body instead of just my hand. Now if I generate the movement from arm or shoulder the results are much more satisfactory. Thank you for this gem of a tip!
Thank you for sharing this very useful information that beginners can actually use rather than quick sketches that really explain nothing about what to look for in the subject. I knew about 8 of the mistakes, but I taught some drawing in High School. I saw students making these mistakes constantly. Personally, I would like to learn about how to draw forest scenes that capture the essence of particular trees ( how the limbs are shaped in different types of trees) and how to suggest the light and shadow without drawing every leaf. Complicated I know but I thought I would put this out there. Drawings can be so much more magical than photos and this is what I would like to capture.....
It's funny how I've been an artist since my first 'wall installation' at age 2, much to my mom's chagrin... and I still learned or re-learned an easier way how to do a couple basics! Thank you Michele. :) I'm lucky because Mom did right by me and she encouraged my art and writing . At 15 she let me take over the basement, and it became my first studio. THAT was sheer luck and her generosity. So moms and dads out there - teach your kid how to clean up when their art ends up on the wrong canvas, and give them a better canvas - be it a simple pad of paper , or a spare room with table and chair and a way for them to earn money to fill it with the gear for the form of art that grabs them. The lovely madness began there in that studio and the 48 years since my first art gallery show have been made better by creating many types / forms of art. It never hurts to try something new! The best part of my art journey was the years I volunteered as an art assistant at my local VA (vet's hospital).
All good stuff. Especially the eyes not being on a straight line. I've been drawing for years but it only dawned on me recently that it is wrong to draw eyes on a straight line.
No she's wrong about this. Human eyes and eye sockets are forward facing and in line with each other, they don't curve around with the skull face out at different angles.
Bless you! As a senior citizen I decided to learn to drawing, so now all my essential tools are here, read a ‘how to book’ and yup, I made all the mistakes you stated, 1 thru 10! Thank you for showing the how-too, as I’m a visual learner I’m saving this video with my plan to watch all your other ones too. I will then restart from video 1 and draw with you! Thank you again for a great video!
I showed a watercolour painting of an owl on FaceBook a while back, asking why it looked wrong, and Michelle pointed out that it wasn't the painting, but the drawing...is this tutorial for me Michelle?! 😂
I am very new to watercolor and artistic endeavors in general....a true newbie. I find your style of teaching extremely good to follow and I am able to repeat the steps you lay out. And I watch your videos over and over!
That's great Karen, I have a ton of free drawing videos on this channel, plus a full online course which is half the price of the one you were looking at :-)
I believe learning art fundamentals for me is key to improving my abstract (acrylic pouring paintings) -- drawing, perspective, design, color theory -- skills. Just because it may look pleasing to my eyes, doesn't mean the poured piece follows artistic reasoning as you are showing in this video. Thank you for the instruction!
Thank you. I have watched several of your videos and they are so helpful. I really like how you give an example of what not to do and then what to do; it makes a lot more sense and easier to remember. BTW I did a sketch of my favourite mug tonight which has some cartoon cats on it and some fish skeletons. I was disappointed with it when I finished but I have now looked at it several times and it is better than I thought it was. I can see things that are not right and which could be improved. I think it will be worthwhile redoing it again in the future to see how much better I can draw it.
I’ve been drawing for about two years and have, and continue, to make most of these mistakes. But #1 was the very best tip! Recently, I was thinking about how to draw buildings or an urban scene and thought, why don’t I place little marks to guide where I’ll put the building. It just made sense to me to do so, but I’d never seen anyone teach that. However, it never occurred to me to use them for something a lot less linear. Thanks for all these tips and I know I’ll be revisiting this video.
Oh my gosh! You are AMAZING!! I learned so much from all these tricks and can see an immediate improvement in my drawing already. Thank you SO much for sharing your gift of drawing with us newbies!!
Michele has to be one of the funniest of the RUclips artists. “That tree looks like it’s from a horror movie. OK, I’m going to stop drawing a tree now“. In another video, can’t remember which one, she said that playing Céline Dion music loudly should be outlawed. 😆 Also, she’s quite intelligent/knowledgeable outside of art. Considering drawing a flat fish as an example of a rule breaker was pretty cool.
Wow! I have just started drawing and painting at 60 years old and I've learnt more from this video than from hours and hours of others I've watched (even some Skillshare ones!). I have to giggle because I've made so many of these mistakes and I feel so much more confident to try different things now and understand why something looks "off" and how to correct it. The lessons on perspective and the angle I'm looking at my subject from are particularly helpful. Very happy new subscriber!
The technique tips are so simple to understand and I find your method of explaining very calm and clear. That's always an indecation that you have a deep knowledge of your subject. Thank you.
Loved this! You have such a great way of explaining things. The difference is in the details. I know my sketching is going to improve greatly as a result of applying these new techniques and retraining the brain to draw only what it really sees.
Some of these I've intuitively found as I've made (bad) sketches, like making motifs shrink with distance, but others I completely missed (like the flat vase bottom). You've made a few basic rules concrete. And I followed your face-drawing tutorial to make my first portrait: my Dad for his father's day card. It actually looks like him! Thank you! I'm going to try your tip for flower facing next.
This was great! I draw a barn that i went to as a kid and always draw the roof. It never occurred to me not to. Also very refreshing to hear that everyone makes mistakes. I had thought that i ‘had to’ get it right/accurate right away. Just recognizing recently that that i have put a lot of pressure on myself. I have had so many misconceptions about drawing. As a kid/12 years old (mid 1970’s)someone who taught art at a private school that i didn’t attend saw me drawing and commented this kid can’t draw, how can she paint’. I had been painting in oil for about a year at that time. I stopped painting right away and have struggled with drawing and painting. My inner voice repeatedly said you can’t draw. I allowed that negative thought to define me. It is time to change that. I can draw and i will draw.
Thank you for the face lines. For years I used straight lines when drawing faces and just could not make it work. Now I know why. I just thought I was not able to draw faces. And would give up. So thank you for showing me there IS a better way. And I had been guilty of number 10? Struggled with centering my subject. However I have learned to use guidelines. Even though I'm not a beginner, I do like a refresher course now and again. I have learning disabilities and your tutorials have helped me improve my technique/style. 😊
I too have run out of paper - when drawing an image - I now make a light pencil grid of the photo and paper - say 6 or 8 sections and use that as a guide, drawing in the relevant sections into the grid -
In the hundreds of watercolor videos I've watched, I've never heard anyone talk about how to get your water to lie flat instead of running uphill. I couldn't figure it out by myself since I've never taken any classes, (and don't have any natural talent) but at least you touched on it in this video. I would like a more in depth explanation since I'm a little slow. lol I'm 69 and have been fiddling with watercolor off and on for many years, but I'm still not good. Your videos have really helped me a lot of times with questions I had.
Thanks Ruby! Basically if anything looks like it's tipping up towards you make it less deep, ie flatten the shape so it's wider than tall. Have a look at my other drawing videos, I think I did a landscape one that features it.
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Hi Michelle, I did see another one of your drawing videos where you explained it more in depth and it helped a lot! I really enjoy your videos, but I have to pace myself...if I watch one where you're talking about watercolor pencils, I have to get mine out. Then before I've done anything with them I see another one of your videos on watercolor....out come the paints. lol I can never decide what to do because I want to do it all! I have a terminal illness, so I need to hurry. lol
Your attitude to improving the standard of beginner art is highly commendable. No one has a defined list of do's and don''t put your pencil in that. So tutorials from a person kind enough to share their years of making every single mistake that has been made by all the greatest artists in history is fantastic. So many of the comments confirm that they have also made these mistakes, even though your videos don't stop people making these mistakes, they know why it happened wich is priceless info Keep pointing out every ones mistakes because the only true way to get better at anything is to make mistakes. But now they can understand why it happened and know its not due to a lack of talent.
This video is so helpful in pointing out not only the mistakes, but how to avoid making them. I make numerous mistakes when drawing, sometimes without even knowing that they are mistakes. Your video is just perfect for pointing me in the right direction. Thank you Michele x

Thank you again for a great video!
I showed a watercolour painting of an owl on FaceBook a while back, asking why it looked wrong, and Michelle pointed out that it wasn't the painting, but the drawing...is this tutorial for me Michelle?! 😂
Now don't be complaining because you got your very own video :-) :-)
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber lol.. Shucks!!! ❤️ ❤️
I am very new to watercolor and artistic endeavors in general....a true newbie. I find your style of teaching extremely good to follow and I am able to repeat the steps you lay out. And I watch your videos over and over!
Thank you so much!
I remember my old art teacher used to say "draw what you SEE, not what you know..."
Good advice!
I couldn't afford the local drawing course for £350, and was sad. The next day, I have found this video, so thank you xxx
That's great Karen, I have a ton of free drawing videos on this channel, plus a full online course which is half the price of the one you were looking at :-)
In some cases, this is why someone invented abstract, nothing matters then! haha
Great tips, I'm on my beginners art journey and to have explanations I can understand is gold. Thank you Michele
😂
Thank you for actually explaining perspective in a way that I can understand better.
Great practical advice--worth watching more than once--engaging and easy to understand--thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Well done, learning to critique your own work is one of the best ways to learn!
Glad you found it useful Jane :-)
These were super helpful. You caught me while drawing and I litarally made the one with the flat bottom of objects on a flat surface.
Glad it helped!
Very helpful. Have been particularly guilty of no. 1. Thank-you very much.
You're very welcome!
Oh my gosh! You are AMAZING!! I learned so much from all these tricks and can see an immediate improvement in my drawing already. Thank you SO much for sharing your gift of drawing with us newbies!!
You are so welcome!
I have committed all the mistakes when attempting to draw anything. Thanks so much for explaining so brilliantly
Guilty of many of these mistakes!! Thanks for opening my eyes!!!
Any time!
Your teaching are extremely helpful and useful .
Glad you think so, thank you!
Thanks so much for subscribing Wendy!
The technique tips are so simple to understand and I find your method of explaining very calm and clear. That's always an indecation that you have a deep knowledge of your subject. Thank you.
Thank you 😊
Loved this! You have such a great way of explaining things. The difference is in the details. I know my sketching is going to improve greatly as a result of applying these new techniques and retraining the brain to draw only what it really sees.
Awesome! Thank you!
Duuuude.. genius, woman! 🧐 I love-love. Cheers from Sacramento 🥂 to art!!
Thank you I learnt so much. Especially the top of the chimney etc.
You are very welcome
Thank for helping to be able to draw better... :) I am using your teachings to help me plot out my paintings... :)
Wonderful, glad you like the tips!
Good luck Lisa!
Thanks!!
Yes iv definitely done most of these mistakes.
Great video, thank you Michele! Very instructional, I learned a lot.
Glad it was helpful!
Guilty!!! Terrific tips and observations. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Have watched several of your drawing videos, such a range of knowledge.Thank you for passing it on! So many helpful tips!
You are so welcome!
That's great, thanks for watching Eva!
Very good information and presented in a way that people will remember, thanks.
My pleasure!
I too have run out of paper - when drawing an image - I now make a light pencil grid of the photo and paper - say 6 or 8 sections and use that as a guide, drawing in the relevant sections into the grid -
Absolutely brilliant. Many thanks. Also thanks for the closed captions. Really helpful for us hard of hearing folk.
Excellent knowledge and ability makes good sense all examples are relevant thanks again.
Glad you think so!
I have a terminal illness, so I need to hurry. lol
@@rubyfisch5077 bless you, I hope you stay healthy for as long as possible and get to make lots of art 🙏❤️
Thank you so much! You have greatly improve my skills with one short video.
Thank you for your examples. I learned a lot.
Glad to hear that!
Love these videos. I have watched many you tube drawing videos. Yours are my favorite
Wow, thank you!
Like your new setup! Hope you’re finally enjoying some lovely spring weather! Excellent tips as always!
Yes! Thank you!
You have so many great suggestions and I enjoyed your viedos so much
Glad you like them!
I like how you explain everything thank you very much.
Glad it was helpful!
It's so good to review these techniques. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
I have made pretty much all of those mistakes. I'll be practising my drawings using your methods.
This by far the best video I have ever watched about drawing! Thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful!
Your attitude to improving the standard of beginner art is highly commendable. No one has a defined list of do's and don''t put your pencil in that. So tutorials from a person kind enough to share their years of making every single mistake that has been made by all the greatest artists in history is fantastic. So many of the comments confirm that they have also made these mistakes, even though your videos don't stop people making these mistakes, they know why it happened wich is priceless info
Keep pointing out every ones mistakes because the only true way to get better at anything is to make mistakes.
You are very welcome!
