Water resistance is really overrated with watches. If you are certified recreational diver, you can even wear a Casio F91W and go down up to 40 feet (12M) without any problems. If you want to go deeper, you need to get an open water certification of 59 feet (18M). So, if it's ISO rated like the Casio, you can go diving with it and most everyone doesn't need a 100M or even 50M water resistance. By the way, Omega Speedmaster is ISO 22810 rated for 50M and good for swimming but probably can go diving too. That said, I wouldn't go swimming with my Speedy Pro. I have a Casio Duro for that.
I have a few watches that don't really need to go swimming so I put them with my phone which doesn't need to go swimming either. It's really not that hard.

My hot take is the opposite of one of the MWC's. People care waaayyyy too much about water resistance. I think most people who care strongly have never been diving; 40m is the deepest rating hobbiest divers can be certified for, and it is flipping deep (you can't even see colors anymore at thay depth). Back in the day 30m might mean splashproof, but these days it means 30m, and that is more than enough even for the majority of actual divers.
I scuba dived for a while, nobody i knew took their luxury dive watches with them while diving. They rather use a dive computer, since cleaning your watch of salt everyday on holiday gets really old.
Totally agree. It is aspirational marketing. “Maybe I will ever be in a situation where I need it…” No, you won’t. You might take a shower with it or dive in a pool and that’s it. It’s the same as city people buying a 4WD for the opportunity to go off-road when all they ever do is driving their kids to school.
There is a big difference between static pressure and dynamic pressure. If you jump in a swimming pool, the instantaneous pressure on your watch case as you brake the water is going to be a lot more than 30m. *HARDLEX is awesome!* I am wearing an SKX013 for almost two decades now, which I banged onto almost everything, especially my faucet in the shower. There will not go a year without me at least banging my watch on a faucet or radiator. There are multiple scratches now. There is even a small chip out. This is one of the best takes tbh. Fully agree with the clasp issue especially. I in fact tend to prefer a stamped clasp, as I find they're often far more comfortable to be on the wrist all day than some of the other options out there. They don't diminish the look of the watch either, especially when that part of the watch only ever gets seen typically when putting it on and taking it off.

Don’t know if this is a hot take, but after I got into vintage watches, I kinda lost interest in modern watches. It takes a very nice modern watch to catch my attention. Currently I own a 1998 quartz Seamaster (36mm), an 80’s Seiko 5 and a 70’s Movado Kingmatic.
It’s funny to listen to people complaining about how their smartwatch only lasts a day between charges when after over 2 centuries of innovation mechanical watches go maybe 4 days(?) for a good one? I’d say 2 days on average. I’m not a smartwatch fan but was watching a vid the other day talking about the abysmal performance of the Apple watch’s battery. Even though it does so much more than a mechanical watch. They are literally magic if you go back only 30-40 years.

Wife has it right. If a Casio tells time just as well why did you spend all that money on a Rolex? Rolex is a status symbol. But I do think less of someone that wears their Submariner as a dress watch. A diver is not a dress watch even if you did pay $10,000 for it.
My hot take - all watches should be quartz. Far more accurate and reliable & better value than all that mechanical rubbish that needs to be serviced every few years. I mean, the purpose of a watch is to keep accurate time isn't it?
Outstanding video, Russel! I laughed out loud more than a couple times. I also agreed with just about everything you said. Oh & hot take: Casio should develop an in house automatic movement.

Totally agree. "Heritage" is a word that a lot of rich wussies you see on TV like to use. It's not a word for an ordinary, hard working manly man like myself. Doesn't mean anything to me, i'm all about practicality.
My "hot take" would be that I actually quite like the old style stamped metal clasps, rather than a lot of the modern ones. I find the stamped ones are far more comfortable to wear on the wrist personally, and I don't have any issues with the look either.
At the end of the day, who cares about small silly specs. All that matters is the owner thinks the watch looks great, wears great and suits their style / lifestyle. Everything else is almost insignificant :)
How is any mechanical watch a "Tool Watch"? A tool should do a job well, and the job here is time keeping. and when quartz is more accurate, shouldn't "Tool Watch" be reserved for accuracy?
No way I see a tool watch as a very robust water tight watch. Accuracy comes with any watch! The movement is antimagnetic, invalid shock absorbers, silicon hairsprings also a bonus! In the 40’s a mechanical watch was all you had out fighting in the beaches!!!! Can’t not call them tool watches now?!?!
Now that you mention it., I don't like when brands "listen" to fans and create the "Homer watch", please, they are the specialist's, let them do there job. exam. One youtuber complains that the date wheel does not match the dial, then the next youtuber is complaining that because it matches it's not legible., let the watch brands do their job, and we will buy what we like., and don't get me started with the "I can't pull it off, it's to big" ...first you say they are tools, ¿then you say you need a smaller tool? ¡That's the size it was designed for it's purpouse! OMG son many hot takes not on watches, on RUclipsrs. Greetings from MX
A GADA watch cannot be a luxury watch. There are plenty of places I couldn’t go and things I couldn’t do with a luxury watch. Friends who think spending money on luxury is cringey, dodgy neighbourhoods, gardening …
a leather strap on a dive watch is like wearing flip flops with a suit, the therapeutic value of this video was immense ,I wonder what a hardlex replacement for a rolex explorer vs saphire would cost
Tom it’s not the point, the watch community know 100m is the minimum for a good everyday watch. Doesn’t matter the depth. However like I’ve said , imagine what the pressure is if I were to dive into a swimming pool? I would guess it’s more than 50 ATMOS
I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way about power reserve. I enjoy taking a watch out of my (well more than three watch) box and going through the process of winding and setting it. Thanks for another great video.
My hot take: quick release spring bars should be a given (or something like IWC EasX-change system); manufacturers using regular spring bars need to give their heads a shake 😁
Panerai has the best system of all. All you need is a toothpick, paper clip, safety pin, sharp pencil tip (or Panerai's overpriced plastic tool) and you can make a quick strap change. Once installed it is as strong as an FXD but can be used for leather, rubber or nato.
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 No not at all - just a lean guy who trains So expansion and contraction happens So bracelet size is usually off without some on the fly Also - best comment I’ve read in ages 🔥🤣
Why get a Garmin instead of an Apple Watch? Doesn’t the Apple Watch do everything the Garmin does, plus 100+ more things… 10 or so are really great and useful.
@@vipnetworker This particular Garmin is what I'd consider an ideal smartwatch for watch enthusiasts - it has a MIP display, 28 days of battery life (the solar version technically doesn't require charging, weather permitting), water resistance of 100M, shock resistant, button controlled rather than a touch screen which is perfect if you've got sweaty hands or you're swimming. It also looks like a watch! It's a bit pricier than the basic G-Shock smartwatch, although the solar version is cheaper than the Rangeman or similar.
There is always the problem of garmins that..they life span is around 4-6 years than that is it your are force to buy another new one due to its battery, they are sealed so user replacements are a no go unless you are an actual a pro electronist
My only hot take outside of the power reserve vs. higher beat: Don't talk shit about Casio. They're legit in the world of digital watches and I certainly think that everyone should own at least two Casio watches on their collection. So much for the snobbery.
I dropped my Seiko SNKL23 face down on an asphalt pavement and the crystal did not shatter, and has only a small scratch at 8 o'clock. So I'm happy with Hardlex.
I actually need to see the time in darkness most mornings to see how long til my alarm goes off. As I have a cheap large display digital watch with a good backlight by my bed I would agree the lume of any watch on my wrist doesn't matter. I still like a well lumed watch though :) None of my watches have ever been submerged in water so the resistance doesn't matter to me either.
Literally every hardlex Seiko I've ever bought has had the crystal scratched within the first 6 months. I honestly haven't noticed any difference in scratch resistance between hardlex and normal mineral crystal! It's just marketing!!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR It's an office job.. but I do live in a bit of an out of the way location where I drive a boat to and from the house everyday.. so that may have something to do with it! 😂
Love this video! Love MWC’s style. My Hot Takes: 1. Spring Drive is hugely under appreciated: It’s unique; it’s the best of mechanical and quartz; and the smooth sweep blitzes any high beat movement. 2. Seiko/Grand Seiko seem to have started the current craze for funky dial finishes. I wish other brands would show a bit more originality/leadership. 3. Why is no one making dials from that super black stuff that absorbs 99.9% of light? Would look amazing with highly reflective hands / batons, and it would make colours really pop.
Hot Take: Setting a date, especially a Day/Date is a waste of time. Wind the watch, set the time, ignore the date. Use your phone or your brain. How do you not know what day it is?
Entertaining vid Jody loves on the fly dive extensions. You forgot to mention milled clasps - everyone is obsessing over those, is only a 'thing' in the last few years and doesn't affect comfort. Btw I picked up that PRX digital, at A$215 it's a great piece being 35mm, sapphire, 100m WR & that bracelet. Many watches are still 50m but most won't wear dress watches swimming 😊.
You do you my good fella. Listen you know I’m not a fan of the cow milking PRX machine. No matter what you paid for it , it’s a way of selling more of a hugely milked range and it’s unlikable! I could’ve said a lot my friend but 10 minutes is enough . I don’t think people would bother watching longer!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR haha yes I tend to agree that the PRX has turned a good brand into a one trick pony. It does make you wonder why the quartz one isn't cheaper though. Doubt I'll keep it forever but was interesting enough to check it out for that price. Keep up the good work!

Hardlex is marketing jargon mumbo jumbo. My seikos with hardlex scratch easier than citizens with their hardened mineral. Maybe citizen was able to put a little more money into making the best mineral composite rather than making a silly name ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Haha Yes!!! He used my hot take comment!! And yes, Seiko can get f'ed with that Hardlex B.S. I got two scratches in my presage cocktail time "Hardlex" crystal after wearing it maybe a dozen times... In the immortal words of Jerry from JerryRigEverything, "Glass is glass and glass scratches". Sorry all you Hardlex apologists, but you're wrong. Still love Seiko designs though...
Everything… except micro adjust. Very useful in Dubai, Singapore and the rest of SEA. I even loosen a rubber strap in those areas in the afternoon. Edit: watching that watch poser Barker drop his Exp II - awesome. There is Karma.
50 meters is still like 164 feet. Let me know how often you actually need to be deeper than 164 feet in water. If you aren't diving, the answer is probably never. Hardlex is fine but my Seiko 5 Sports GMT has poicked up two scratches in the crystal. Oh well. My hot takes - everyone glamorizes g shocks too much. They're good watches, sure, but the glazing for them is wild. I also hate all of the "_____ monster" descriptors. Tool watch is also a stupid phrase. I'm going to reiterate my statement on water resistance. Hardly any of you are diving below 50 meters. You watch will be fine in the shower or the pool. I don't shower with mine because I don't want the strap to be soggy on my wrist. IF you actually dive deeper than 50 meters than just get a dive watch that's ISO certified for deeper than you dive and stop complaining that a chronograph or a field watch has 50 meters. Lastly, 90% of watch yotubers have the wrist size of a child. Still nothing but love, MWC.
1. Unless you dive, lume doesn’t really matter. 2. Like you say Power reserve is overrated 3. Hot take - quartz watches are still cool. 4. Hot take - all watches tell the time 🤯. Pick the one(s) you like. 5. And my final hottest take, women can wear big watches, fact!
This was such a spot on (well, except the little bit of shade at my Speedy Moonwatch, but, you are forgiven) and I agree with just about every one of your hot takes! You are entertaining, insightful, and the sarcasm is spot on! Oh - I don't care about lume either.....ok...I said it!
Your wife, spot on as always! I do think that the watch collecting journey is a beautiful one, but even after reaching Rolex, AP, Patek...you end up in the "been there done that" mentality that ultimately makes you appreciate a Seiko again 😂
My Duro has been my daily for 3 yrs, I work around steel shelves and monos... so I bang it often, and have never had a scratch on the mineral glass. There is a dent on the aluminum bezel, just to give you some perspective. Yes I also believe that 100m should be the minimum(preferably with a screw down crown), especially when the price goes up. And YES I understand that they probably don't neet it, but it gives me piece of mind... And hell if Casio can do it on a Duro, I DON'T see why other brands can't do it on much more expensive watches.
RE power reserve I don't trust automatic as I only wear a watch for 5-10 hours each day, not 24/7. So, I wind my watch each morning to maintain power; helps with accuracy as well.
1) Love Hardlex! 2) Modern lume is USELESS, because it is no longer radio-active, so it does not glow for 16.8 years, until the paint is burnt out, and then the bleedin watch is still radio-active! Modern lume is gone in a few minutes! It makes MUCH more sense to have non-lume solid black hands on a white face, because that is so much easier to see and read in dim conditions!

Hot take - automatic watches have been obsolete for around 50 years ;)
Absolutely! So is the steam engine! Cool to see though ay?!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR very true(I do like a good train), but no one’s calling a steam train luxury though 😉
@@kevinscott4938have you bought a ticket on a steam train lately? Those retired train boys need paying!!!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR only every Christmas time when I take my nephew on a Christmas “trip” to the North Pole. The steam train ride is more for me to be fair. 😉
Wife has it right. If a Casio tells time just as well why did you spend all that money on a Rolex? Rolex is a status symbol. But I do think less of someone that wears their Submariner as a dress watch. A diver is not a dress watch even if you did pay $10,000 for it.
Always waiting for the "Click the Like Button" segment😂 and yes i click it every time😂
My hot take - all watches should be quartz.
My little but growing Casio collection gets more great comments than people I know who have dropped thousands on some ego brand watch, the Casios are much more fun, love the vid again mate, very entertaining as always, don't agree with everything but that's what makes it enjoyable, best to the wife

Nearly at 200k Russ! You’re fast becoming a superstar on here, Mr Baldasarré better watch his back 🎉
I hate negative displays they look great in photos etc but once you see them in the flesh they’re useless. I brought a Casio calculator watch a few months ago with a negative display and sent it back as soon as I opened the box you just could read the display at all .
Totally agree with the exception of the mips G-Shock 👍🏻
@@robinboyes3600 that’s the reason I brought the GBD 200 instead 👌🏻
They’re fine to read when outside I find. Get out more in it.
@@KeepingWatchUK I sent it back and got the MIP display GBD 200 instead .
I’ve scratched Hardlex on my SRP453. After 120+ dives, I finally noticed a few slight scratches. Not bad for all the abuse it’s taken.
Most aren't doing 1 dive let alone 120 so that's a good showing
You forgot the phrase heritage... doesn't always mean a good watch .
Totally agree. "Heritage" is a word that a lot of rich wussies you see on TV like to use. It's not a word for an ordinary, hard working manly man like myself. Doesn't mean anything to me, i'm all about practicality.
Hot Take : Buy what you like 😊
That’s like warm that one, in fact that ones come outta the fridge!!!!
My "hot take" would be that I actually quite like the old style stamped metal clasps, rather than a lot of the modern ones. I find the stamped ones are far more comfortable to wear on the wrist personally, and I don't have any issues with the look either.
Totally agree re adjustable clasps, I have 3 and have never had to use them. Great to hear someone challenge the norm.
You're right about the Hamilton pitiful wr. My Khaki sent this message from inside its bag of rice.
At the end of the day, who cares about small silly specs. All that matters is the owner thinks the watch looks great, wears great and suits their style / lifestyle. Everything else is almost insignificant :)
👍“i don’t care what you think” … but then why are we all here??😅
How is any mechanical watch a "Tool Watch"? A tool should do a job well, and the job here is time keeping. and when quartz is more accurate, shouldn't "Tool Watch" be reserved for accuracy?
No way I see a tool watch as a very robust water tight watch. Accuracy comes with any watch! The movement is antimagnetic, invalid shock absorbers, silicon hairsprings also a bonus! In the 40’s a mechanical watch was all you had out fighting in the beaches!!!! Can’t not call them tool watches now?!?!
5:20 Breitling that was inspired by Baume & Mercier !
😂
The second the artist does what fans tell them to, the artist loses their originality !
A GADA watch cannot be a luxury watch. There are plenty of places I couldn’t go and things I couldn’t do with a luxury watch. Friends who think spending money on luxury is cringey, dodgy neighbourhoods, gardening …
Great point David!
OMG...you were on fire with this one buddy! Keep up the great work.
a leather strap on a dive watch is like wearing flip flops with a suit, the therapeutic value of this video was immense ,I wonder what a hardlex replacement for a rolex explorer vs saphire would cost
The people choosing power reserve over sweep are just plain wrong!
People who don't have to make a choice own Panerai. 8 Days @28,800
Doesn’t your Willard have Sapphire glass…. Other than that (and the RUclips wr paranoia) bang on for the rest…
Yes .
Russ hear what your saying about the Speedmaster but what percentage of the global population are ever going down further than 50m?
Tom it’s not the point, the watch community know 100m is the minimum for a good everyday watch. Doesn’t matter the depth. However like I’ve said , imagine what the pressure is if I were to dive into a swimming pool? I would guess it’s more than 50 ATMOS
I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way about power reserve. I enjoy taking a watch out of my (well more than three watch) box and going through the process of winding and setting it.
Thanks for another great video.
I feel this way, too. I certainly don’t mind winding & setting a stopped watch, but my favorite two watches almost never stop!
Lucky YOU! I've scratched EVERY Hardlex crystal I've ever owned. Still not giving up my SKX171. Ever.
Loved them
Although - on the fly is a must for me
Wrist changes size to much
Do you have allergies or something? Who balloons up so much their watch doesn't fit?!
@@TheJackPhillips no - my wrist changes about 7mm from coldest to hottest
So on the fly is super handy
@BenMwatches are you SpongeBob SquarePants?!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
No not at all - just a lean guy who trains
So expansion and contraction happens
So bracelet size is usually off without some on the fly
Also - best comment I’ve read in ages 🔥🤣
The Garmin Instinct 2 is a better attempt at bridging the smart/digi watch gap than anything Casio has done.
Cost wise, Garmin is Rolex while Casio stays, well, Casio ...
Why were you looking off camera nervously while talking about low power reserve😮😂😊
Hahahahahahaha
Pretty much agree with almost everything! Good video
My only hot take outside of the power reserve vs. higher beat: Don't talk shit about Casio. They're legit in the world of digital watches and I certainly think that everyone should own at least two Casio watches on their collection. So much for the snobbery.
Agreed. My collection is full of Casio's, Rolex, Omega, Grand Seiko, Hanhart, Cartier ❤❤
I dropped my Seiko SNKL23 face down on an asphalt pavement and the crystal did not shatter, and has only a small scratch at 8 o'clock. So I'm happy with Hardlex.
My hot take : I dont care about symetry (think about the Milenium Falcon)
That is a great one!!!!!
I don't care about symmetry, I dress to the left.
Or the Ploprof
I loved the old asymm Christopher Ward dials entirely due to the fact that it drove so many people nuts.
Agree with the wife casio is best 😂
Hot take… love a manual wind!
My hot takes are water resistance doesn't matter, just take it off, and lume doesn't matter, how many times you need to see the time in total darkness
I actually need to see the time in darkness most mornings to see how long til my alarm goes off. As I have a cheap large display digital watch with a good backlight by my bed I would agree the lume of any watch on my wrist doesn't matter. I still like a well lumed watch though :)
None of my watches have ever been submerged in water so the resistance doesn't matter to me either.
Totally agree with 99% of what you sat but i own 2 PRX Digitals (:
Literally every hardlex Seiko I've ever bought has had the crystal scratched within the first 6 months. I honestly haven't noticed any difference in scratch resistance between hardlex and normal mineral crystal! It's just marketing!!
Peter what do you do for a job and is your middle name clumsywumsey???
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR It's an office job.. but I do live in a bit of an out of the way location where I drive a boat to and from the house everyday.. so that may have something to do with it! 😂
Brilliant! You are still wrong about WR though 😂
Of course!!!!;)
Omega 50Meter water resistance is totally different :)) !
My brain can't handle conflicting information
@@bmjames What is conflicting?
How about 99% of RUclips watch reviewers say that they have a 7.5 inch wrist. I call bullshit. 😏
I don’t!!!!!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR Present company excluded.😉👍🏼
I love seiko, but I have scratched the hardlex on at least half of them
But not shattered any of them. That's his point
Hot Take: Only buy Quartz, and you'll be happy!
A watch should not look like kids toy
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR ps. I returned a PRX quartz a year or two ago, same size wrist as you and the 40mm wears too big, not a fan either in general ;).
Entertaing as usual 👏

coming from experience I'd take a soiko with hardlex over a chinesium with sapphire
Flippin love a Soiko my friend!!!!!;)
Omega speedmaster.... 50 mtrs is 50 mtrs and it won't leak !! Anyway why would you go swimming wearing a chronograph in the first place ???
My Breitling dive watch has a leather strap. ABOMINATION!!
Everything… except micro adjust. Very useful in Dubai, Singapore and the rest of SEA. I even loosen a rubber strap in those areas in the afternoon.
Edit: watching that watch poser Barker drop his Exp II - awesome. There is Karma.
Doesn't the PRX digital look very much like that really expensive Casio you bought recently?
Hot Take: I’m 99% certain that 99% of Dive Watches owners have never been diving and never will.
Including the ones who think they NEED all the specs.
2. Like you say Power reserve is overrated
3. Hot take - quartz watches are still cool.
4. Hot take - all watches tell the time 🤯. Pick the one(s) you like.
5. And my final hottest take, women can wear big watches, fact!
Loved this. I use the micro adjust maybe twice per day...yes any sports, professional or field watch should be 100m.
sorry to say but this video is a mess. I have no idea what topics you are talking about I just hear screaming
You’re a mess
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR yeah?? well … my dad is stronger than your dad!
