I've had a perdix AI for about 3 years or so now and could not be happier, just completed my sidemount and ANDP using this and the Teric as backup. While I like the vibration alerts I find that I am always looking at the computers at depth, so the 2 is more of a nice to have than an essential upgrade for me. Great to see Shearwater continuing with their carefully thought out products! As another commenter has said, would love to hear about when to choose a Petrel over a Perdix as a part of your Petrel 3 review
Since we usually do not have a lot of warm water diving in Germany, I can ensure you the vibration works great through 7mm Neoprene and also on top of a dry suit: All good!
I upgraded, sold my backup Perdix Ai and got the Perdix 2. My main Perdix Ai is now on my right arm as a backup and the new Perdix 2 is on my left arm as my main computer. Vibration alerts was my main reason for upgrading.
I can say that you can feel the vibration through a drysuit sleeve and thick undersuit. I used my Perdix and Teric at Silfra in Iceland earlier this year. Keep up the good work👌
I got the perdix two last year two days after my open water certification and couldn't be happier with it. I'd never need a second computer if I didn't want a redundant one as a divemaster
Great review James! I have also noticed the perdix 2 has a faster temperature sensor. I did a dive a few weeks ago where the surface temp was 85 and hit a crazy thermocline where the bottom temp was 64. I had a perdix 1 and a perdix 2, and the perdix 2 adjusted much faster.
I wonder if it's due to the titanium bezel and glass screen conducting heat away faster than the plastic components or a different sensor.. I'm guessing the former though.
Love my Peregrine! Don’t plan on becoming a Tech diver so no need for the Perdix…but a lovely piece of kit! wondering when they’ll upgrade the Peregrine…thanks James u r the best.
Peregrine actually supports entry level tech diving as well. I used mine to get to advanced nitrox accelerated deco diving course, which needs you to switch gases and dive up to 50m. Only if you went further than that into trimix for 60m or into CC would you need to upgrade. So -- it goes a long way.
My wife and I both have the Perdix AI and we love them. Both are about 5 years old. Would I like to upgrade to the Perdix 2? Yup! Will I shell out the money to do so? Nope. Even with selling the old computers, I just can't justify the investment for minimal gains--especially since the Perdix AI really does such an awesome job already.
two comments. 1- Love the Kittywake! 2- A well trained diver (tec) should not need alerts of any kind, as he/she is expected to be in control of all dive parameters at all time.
I bought a perdix ai about 3 weeks before the 2 came out. Little annoyed there was no announcement it was coming or else I would’ve waited. But I won’t be upgrading as the new features don’t mean enough to me for the price of a new one. All that said I’m very happy with my perdix ai.
Wish they would have added an OLED like the Teric. Just a little crisper and feels brighter (due to true blacks) making it seem easier to read. Though, nothing is wrong with the current LED.
as a uk diver who dives a 4mmHD Neo drysuit, can confirm the vib setting is strong with this one. scared me once with low GTR...at the beginning of a dive lol. but luckily we never trust just one source eh?
I've always enjoyed your reviews as we know for a fact you dive the kit before your reviews. And you don't just try it once, you really dive with it. I have the perdition ai and love it. I feel I'm good though without the upgrades. Thanks again James and love your videos!
For UK diving I use my Perdix AI as my primary with mt Petrel 2 as a backup. No reason to upgrade as I also have a Teric which vibrates and that is my primary holiday computer while my Perdix AI get mounted on my camera float so I can always see my depth/NDL/GTR etc. I have tried the Teric on my dry suit and you can feel the vibrations from that so I imagine the Perdix 2 will also be felt whilst wearing a dry suit.
If i hadnt already purchased amx technology aluminum bezels for both my perdix and perdix ai i would have definitely bought the new perdix. Also if i was still diving on a suunto computer i would have just bought the new version of the perdix. The haptic feedback function would be nice but with all the color combinations you can adjust to i have never had a problem seeing an alarm right away.
I’ve been eyeing the Perdix2, but just found a used Perdix AI for $800 Canadian. At over $400 less, I’m going with the AI, vibration would be nice, but I can live without it. Thanks for the awesome comparison and videos.
I believe that changes in the Petrel values more than in the Perdix. The AI in Petrel now can centralize every information of the dive in the same place, when I diving with my rebreather for example! So in my opinion, the changes in petrel was deeper than Perdix and I am looking to change my when it is possible.
Don't need audible or vibration alerts . Ck depth , pressure , and ndl as you should at regular intervals. Perdix upgrade to Perdix 2 not needed. Nice they are looking at what they have and trying to improve to make things better. I would consider as my 2nd dive comp.
Personally I rely on my Perdix AI heavily as a Tec Diver... but as a Tec Diver I also dive with 2 computers. My Perdix is the backup to my Teric and as my backup there are other pieces of my kit I would rather drop a few hundred on than simply updating the Perdix to get the vibration alerts.
i had thought initially of getting the perdix ai. i did not due to the price and the fact that i dont really dive that much. i have an expensive hobby that is difficult to find other people to dive with me. i am seriously thinking of getting the perdix 2. looks like a great tool
As always, a great review and I especially love all the underwater in-use footage as that gives a great perspective of what it’s really like to dive? Have you had any chance to evaluate Bluetooth speed? The Perdix AI can take almost 20 minutes to download a simple firmware update, something that most other devices do in seconds. Maybe it’s just that being a watertight device, it won’t let Bluetooth through the casing at very high speeds? But, is the P2 faster?
Piezoelectric...? Interesting, I've learned something new today during my coffee.. This weekend I did some pool time to get acquainted with my new computer and I found out that my contact lens prescription needs a little more attention. I don't know how you could add that kind of information to your extensive list of videos/information. I've been learning so much from your channel and relearning (I'm 57 now). You are fun and easy to understand, even with the accent, but your voice is very clear, compared to many other RUclips videos. Also, I've heard you say "us here at Divers Ready" who IS the us??
As an AOW, I really love the vibration alert. I first thought that it was a nice backup feature, because I prided myself on regularly checking my Peregrine underwater. But a few times, I got a bit distracted and got buzzed on my wrist when it was time for a safety stop, ascension, etc. I’m still not sure if I’d ever justify the 100% price increase for air integration. Plus, I like the totally sealed and environmentally friendly (no batteries to throw away) concept with wireless charger. But, hey, like Shearwater’s site says, if you’re a “demanding diver “ (with no other hobbies and $$$$), go for it.
In some of the videos for the Perdix 2 it seems that the screen is divided into sections instead of lines…? I currently own a Perdix, love it, would never change… but after looking at some of the videos where it’s divided into sections, it seems a little easier to look at. Is it divided into sections? Do you still have the option for lines? Middle line middle variable? Thanks for the videos.
James, what are your thoughts for advanced Recreational divers (non-tec focused) now that the Peregrine TX is out? Lil brother to the greatest dive computer made? Who should choose Perdix 2 vs Peregrine TX?
Great content again. Will I upgrade my two Perdix? For me the answer is no. I'm really happy with my Perdix computers, there are no scratches on the housing, I never had issues with the buttons and I've allways been able to read the display. And for me, the vibration feature is great but no killer feature. But if I would need to get another dive computer, the Perdix 2 would be my choice - but sorry, I only have two arms 🙂
The best way that I should take to return to the diving site where the dive began. How do I determine the direction of return? Please reply and thank you
Having a Perdix AI I have to say that there seems to be no reason to upgrade my Perdix. The vibration mode is not worth on several hundreds for me and test is just cosmetics.
I've been diving the Peregrine since literally the day they came out. I LOVE the vibration notifications. But I've always wanted a Perdix AI and pulled the trigger on an original AI last week. My LDS put them on at an incredible savings and I do mean incredible. So....will I miss the vibration alerts??....probably. But with the two whole dives I have on the Perdix 1 I'm totally digging the compass and AI. This week my wife and I are leaving for the Caribbean to live for at least the next few years so I'll have a lot of time to consider the big question. Thanks again James for a great review video.
Another great video. Perdix 2 vs Teric? What's your opinion? I already have an everyday Garmin smart watch. I wear reading glasses and have to turn the brightness up on all my electronics.
Perdix AI gen 1 user here. Not upgrading. Vibration alarm is nice but not a must (Perdix gen 1 only has visual alarms emphasizing the point that you certainly shouldn't need to be reminded to look at your DC!), everything else is worthless to me. I would have liked a bigger screen though. The mini combo infos are useful but are getting difficult to read with my ageing eyes. Also as someone else mentioned, I would have appreciated the same OLED screen they use on the TERIC (I have that too), that would have been one heck of an improvement. Maybe it would rather make sense to upgrade to a Petrel 3...
I have been diving a Perdtix AI for about 3 months now along with my hose mounted Wisdom 3 to decide which one I like better. I don't dive trimix so that is a feature I don't use. I like the sherwood because it is not a wrist mount and I can use the compass without a screen change and I can see the whole compass. I know, I am old school. I like the brightness of the Pertix and ease of reading in low light. So in the end I am still torn and continue to dive with both but I think the Pertix is winning out. Now the Ratio has become available in the US market and looking hard at it as it has the one thing that Perdix is sadly missing, a back button. As a UK diver having access to the Ration back in the day. Have you ever used one or have any thoughts about them.
I just ordered a new perdix 2 black one. But I don’t know why black one is $50 more than grey one. All my diver buddies have perdix. I think It’s best dive computer for fun and technical diving.
I'm 16 dives in, I dont have a dive computer. I love the large screen which is the main attraction as my eyesight is pretty crap. Is there anything else I should consider with same sort of screen but perhaps a bit cheaper?
Thanks for the review. I also have the vibration alerts on my Peregrine and can feel them well when diving dry suits with thicker undersuits. For the review of the Pertrel 3: Can you please elaborate, when and why one would buy the Petrel over the Perdix (apart from CCR divers)? Thanks!
How can i find out if its a Perdix, a Perdix AI or the Perdix 2 TI? (before i get it in my hands, for example Ebay .) is there a spec. ID written in the system settings or something?
I'm a happy owner of a gen 1 Perdix AI that is just over 4 years old. I just recently had the general maintenance completed by Dive-Tronix. As part of that $125 maintenance, I received an entirely new case, screen, and bezel. Only the electronics remain from my original computer. Will I upgrade to a Perdix 2? No plans to. The titanium bezel, buttons, and increased sharpness of the screen are nice but not essential to me. As for the vibration alarms, yawn. I don't need them. I'd honestly turn them off regardless. So for me, no plans to upgrade. When the next truly new dive computer comes out from Shearwater that actually replaces/extends the Perdix 2 AI franchise, at that point I will probably upgrade.
Doing most of my dive is.... South Florida, the extra vibration is not enough for me to consider the Upgrade. As lifelong Martial Artist, I have bad the sensitivity in my skin literally beaten out of me decades ago. :) I work with a lot of Veterans and was asked the Ratio ix3m2 tech+, so one is coming my way soon. Does have an HONEST comparison of the ix3m2 and the Perdix?
I have a Perdix AI and love it. Been my only computer for 2 years now. I’m looking to buy a backup computer and thinking of going perdix 2. Curious your thoughts on that, James.
I was just wondering what your opinion of the Suunto Evo Core is compared to the Perdix 2? I have been comparing, but I am having a hard time choosing between them. Thanks.. Anyones opinion please that has actually tried BOTH. (not just marketing opinions please)
Some other guy just does un boxings 🤔 Was it just the lighting or is the P2 more glare free than the Perdix? I'm on the fence while I wait and see what the Apeks DSX is like
I'm struggling to decide between the Perdix 2 and Teric computers. I guess my main issue is size for the Perdix, the Teric is way more chill size-wise, but the Teric battery life seems like a bit of a deal breaker for me, everything else about it seems perfect. What to do?
I have a teric and a peridx. Personally I prefer the Teric but they are both great computers. The two biggest differences are the screen and the buttons. Obviously the Teric screen is smaller, but the brightness of it more than makes up for it. I find that I can read the teric much easier than the perdix (note. I have a perdix 1 not the new 2). As reference I am a 50 y/o who uses glasses sometimes. The other big difference is buttons. While the two buttons of the perdix are easy to use I find the 4 button layout of the teric slighly easier to use, even UW with wet or dry gloves on. There is one other minor difference in SURF GF vs SURF99 calculations but that does not matter to 99.99999% of folks.
I’ve bought the Perdix 2 with the swift transmitter and I’m very happy that I bought it. The perdix 2 dive computer is very beautiful and easy to navigate and to input a dive plan whether for recreational or technical diving. I especially like how Shearwater made reading the graph for m value and tissue compartment easier with using a green yellow and red bar graph with 16 black lines representing fast and slow tissues instead of the classic graph. I almost got a Mares Genius dive computer for tech diving as I’m a fan of Mares but I’m glad my tech diving friends convince me arduously to get a Perdix.
Great video and shots. What about Bluetooth transmission speed? I have the impression that the Peregrine transmits faster than the Perdix AI. Also, my Perdix AI has no audible alarms.
I’ve recently started watching your channel as I get more into scuba and I love your style of videos. Of all the sources of knowledge I find I trust you the most with a lot of this stuff. That being said, I have a question pertaining to getting a perdix or not. I am getting my advanced open water and nitrox certs next week and just picked up a peregrine. But now I’m having second thoughts about it and think that buying a perdix is the better choice (solely because of the air integration. I think it’s an important safety feature, but feel free to comment on this opinion as well). For context, i live in Colorado, so I will be renting all gear except for goggles, snorkel, fins, and computer for the foreseeable future. As far as I can tell, most shops are happy to put your transmitter on their rental regs. (Can you verify that?) If air integration is as important as I think it is, perhaps worth going with something like the aqualung i550c and also buying my own regulator. This package will total about $1500, the same as the perdix. Too many options and I’m overwhelmed lol Please let me know if you have any specific advice. Peregrine is still returnable, and if I go on my next diving trip and realize what I wanted all along was AI I think I’ll be sad to waste that $500. But $1500 is a lot for just the computer. Thank!
What did you end up doing? I've used the i550c since my dive shop was kind enough to lend it to me for a trip to Hawaii but being a picky jerk I ended up going with the Perdix AI before the Perdix 2 came out and definitely don't regret spending the extra money. Both are great computers but I like the Shearwater just a bit better. Buying your own reg and computer seems like a good investment and they are easy to fit in a carry on for travel and you know your dive shop serviced them vs some of the places you never know how the regs are maintained if at all!
@@mhilyard1 I kept the peregrine. And tbh I mostly dive on vacation as a spur of the moment thing instead of going on a dive trip. I’m currently in Chile on a cross country road trip (top to bottom, highly recommend) and while I didn’t plan on diving, it looks like I will be going in the next few days. So I brought none of my gear. This is common, so I’m very happy I didn’t spend much on my gear, because my own gear rarely gets used.
I would like to see the "flooding" of the second hand market. At least here in Germany there is not one used Perdix on the market, not on ebay, not on lokal seller groups. So either the divers around here clearly think the upgraded version is not worth it, or they are just happy with what they have. I'm in the market for one righ5 now and I would take a used one for a reasonable price. I won't pay 700 for it, as then I also would consider the 400 not that much more for a new state of the art piece.
Out of curiosity who did you dive with when you were in Cayman? If you are ever down here and fancy some tech/rebreather action get in touch with us at Indepth watersports
just bought my Perdix 2Ti per all the reviews and raves and had to go back to shop after first dive. Didn't have much time with it out the box to go thru all settings but on first dive before even starting buttons were not responding to touch. Couldn't even use it because it kept powering off and buttons not responding well at all. Very disappointed and buddy diving with equally not impressed. From videos it doesn't seem like you have to push that hard on these but with mine I'm pushing pretty hard. At one point i was seeing factory above information in the bottom row like a factory default? then it would just power off. When was in store pushing both buttons it was talking multiple times to turn on. then would push left button and "turn off" would come up and it would just turn off, no right button push. Or if you tapped the same left button it would turn off instead of going to next option. Store clerk seems to think it is firmware. I am going to try to update this but its was disappointing to have that many issues out the box no matter what firmware version? What's your take?
I’ve got the Perdix AI and lent it to my dad when his computer and reefs where left at home ( happy to be surface cover every now and again ) He liked it so much he bought a one literally 3 days before the Perdix 2 came out! Personally I’ll only upgrade if / when I move onto tech diving, and even then I’ll use the Perdix 1 as a backup. Great video as always James
I have dove in a Waterproof W4 5mm wetsuit and I can feel the vibration of the perdix 2 when it warns me about things like going past my NDL or ascending too fast. The vibration is pretty strong to me.
I have the Perdix AI and I don’t think I’ll upgrade. The vibration feature concerns me greatly: like you, I hate audible alarms and turn mine off. I *assume* the vibration on the Perdix 2 is created by a haptic device. That means there is a motion device in the computer that is routinely entering the marine environment: this IMO is a failure point in a product that was nearly bulletproof to begin with. I can’t find info on how the vibration is created, so if I’m wrong about the source of vibration, my concern is unfounded.
@@funcionando I understand that: it's something moving. Even if it is not in contact with the water, it's something to go wrong. I agree with James: they have a great product that didn't need much improvement. Vibration functionality and titanium covered buttons isn't enough to make me upgrade. But to each to their own! :)
yes its a moving part.... so yes it could break at some point.... the worst case scenario is..... it wouldnt work. But If you dont care about vibration..... I agree its not worth to uograde.

Have you ever used one or have any thoughts about them.
best review I've found
I just ordered a new perdix 2 black one.
Thanks!
Yes, the Peregrine's vibrating alerts are great. Their presence in the new Perdix is essential for me.
How can i find out if its a Perdix, a Perdix AI or the Perdix 2 TI? (before i get it in my hands, for example Ebay .) is there a spec. ID written in the system settings or something?
Just bought last week to replace my old Suunto
Love the reviews. I own two Perdix computers and the updates do not leave me to wanting the Perdix 2
I have a Perdix AI and love it. Been my only computer for 2 years now. I’m looking to buy a backup computer and thinking of going perdix 2. Curious your thoughts on that, James.
Great video!!! Question, Lots of scratches on 2. More than on the perdix 1. Does the 1 have a stronger screen or a screen protector?
I was just wondering what your opinion of the Suunto Evo Core is compared to the Perdix 2? I have been comparing, but I am having a hard time choosing between them. Thanks.. Anyones opinion please that has actually tried BOTH. (not just marketing opinions please)
Wait, so Perdix 1 has no vibration feature??
Correct.
Great review would really like to see you compare against a Ratio iX3m 2 or 3 .. I have not seen much on them and trying to choose between the two.
I recently purchased and used my Perdix 2 on two dives. Anyone know why my SAC rate says “NA”?
I want to see you on dive talk!
I’m disappointed they didn’t improve the screen. Was hoping for a screen like the Teric. I will keep my original.
Would you recommend a AOW diver with Descent 2 jump over to Perdix 2, assuming no Tech dives?
Looking for a video of the perdix 2 vs the Teric
Some other guy just does un boxings 🤔
Was it just the lighting or is the P2 more glare free than the Perdix?
I'm on the fence while I wait and see what the Apeks DSX is like
not enough for me to upgrade but love the review.
ScubaPro/Uwatec Galileo models: thoughts?
Can you compare the Perdix 2 and the Teric please?
Great video and shots.
What about Bluetooth transmission speed? I have the impression that the Peregrine transmits faster than the Perdix AI.
Also, my Perdix AI has no audible alarms.
The Peregrine doesn't do AI, so the task of the BT is much less ....
hi, so the Perdix AI does NOT have an underwater vibration?
(Can you verify that?)
If air integration is as important as I think it is, perhaps worth going with something like the aqualung i550c and also buying my own regulator. This package will total about $1500, the same as the perdix. Too many options and I’m overwhelmed lol
Please let me know if you have any specific advice.
More so for me, I’d want to upgrade my petrel 2 to a petrel 3 for ai on my ccr, but seeing as it’s my controller, not as easy :(
I would like to see the "flooding" of the second hand market.
Nat and Steve are good friends of mine! But alas, on this trip we were guests of someone else and staying up the 'wrong end' of the island!
Is the battery normal aaa? How many hours the battery works?
AA
it looks really good, but it's crazy expensive!
i have a perdix AI and no way I am upgrading to perdix ii only for vibration (i also have a petrel3 as my primary for the JJ)
I can't feel my teric at all with a 7MM or a dry suit. I assume it would be the same with this.
Yes
What does the TI means?
Titanium
Why did your Perdix come without a battery…?
just bought my Perdix 2Ti per all the reviews and raves and had to go back to shop after first dive. What's your take?
perdix 2 vs. MK2I?
So... a couple upgrades for 200$ ?
I’ve got the Perdix AI and lent it to my dad when his computer and reefs where left at home ( happy to be surface cover every now and again )
He liked it so much he bought a one literally 3 days before the Perdix 2 came out!
Personally I’ll only upgrade if / when I move onto tech diving, and even then I’ll use the Perdix 1 as a backup.
Great video as always James
Anyone dive this computer in a 7 mil wet suit? I'm wondering how well the vibration works in a thicker wet suit.
I have dove in a Waterproof W4 5mm wetsuit and I can feel the vibration of the perdix 2 when it warns me about things like going past my NDL or ascending too fast. The vibration is pretty strong to me.
Planing on selling my ScubaPro G2 and getting a Perdix 2. Anybody want to buy a ScubaPro G2?
I have the Perdix AI and I don’t think I’ll upgrade. The vibration feature concerns me greatly: like you, I hate audible alarms and turn mine off. I *assume* the vibration on the Perdix 2 is created by a haptic device. That means there is a motion device in the computer that is routinely entering the marine environment: this IMO is a failure point in a product that was nearly bulletproof to begin with. I can’t find info on how the vibration is created, so if I’m wrong about the source of vibration, my concern is unfounded.
its made by a motor connected to a scendrical weight. So no contact at all with water. Its the same as in mobile phones .
@@funcionando true facts! if the feature 'breaks' you still have a damn good computer.
👍
I would suggest to shorten the intro music
rather "greatest dive computer ever made if it wasn't for the user-replaceable battery". great video though!
Perdix 2?! I’ve had my Perdix for about 18 months and see no good reason to upgrade.
kittiwake?
not enough to upgrade in my opinion
I just can't see the "worth it" in AI and Vibration alerts. I've got an SPG and a pair of eyes.
But to each his own. Tons of people swear by AI.
