  • Haus Rüschhaus
Haus Rüschhaus was built between 1745 and 1748 based on designs by Johann Conrad Schlaun. The complex is an elegant mixture of a rural moated farm and a rural noble residence in the Baroque style. Schlaun himself used the house as a summer residence. In 1825, Baron Clemens August II von Droste zu Hülshoff acquired it. He was the lord of Hülshoff Castle, five kilometers away, and the father of the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. The Baron died in 1826. In the same year, the poet moved into the Rüschhaus with her mother and sister Jenny. Until 1846, Droste lived in three small rooms on the mezzanine floor, which she shared with her former wet nurse Maria Katharina Plettendorf. She called her living room and study her "snail house".
The NRW Foundation has owned the Rüschhaus since 2014. It has given it to the Annette von Droste zu Hülshoff Foundation for use. This means that the cultural site can be preserved for the public in the long term.
