Yeah, worth mentioning everybody still believed in the twin theory after this “debunking”. Even back then this just seemed like a way for the creator to spread his weird time-travel theory.
It's easy to laugh at this with hindsight at our side, but until Ford came out of that portal, the GF team really was trying to keep the question as open as possible. That these kinds of theories could exist is a testament to the success they had in maintaining that sense of mystery, I think.
I literally think at the end of Dungeons, Dungeons, and more Dungeons, I think the hell creator (a.k.a Alex Hirsch) was refrencing to Lewtoons when they said "I guessed that a year ago!!!!" I meant Lewtoons
You're so right. This theory doesn't make sense at all. It barely has any proofs. And, really? Twins? It's such a cliche. Alex would never go for something like that.
2:00 "I just don't think that this fellow right here is the twin, in fact, im quite certain that the man seen in this image is none other than Stanford Pines" This just makes me laugh now
I remember watching a video where a lady who was a private investigator, and who had never watched or seen the show yet, was invited to view the first episode so she could analyze it. After viewing the first episode from start to finish, she made the conclusion that Stan, due to various conditions and circumstances concerning him and the mystery shack, likely once had a significant other, a partner or colleague (maybe even a sibling or twin, due to the theme of Mabel and Dipper also being twins). Whoever it was had a close relationship with Stan but left him and the shack for unknown reasons, likely supernatural in origin due to the nature of the show. That’s when I knew that Alex Hirsche was a genius. He knew what he was doing from the start, and he engrained that fact into the show from the very first episode. The fact that the investigator was able to pick up that Stan had a significant other, maybe even a sibling, from the first episode of the series showcases that not only Alex had intentionally coded that Stanley had an apparent missing person he was close to (Stanford) from the beginning, but it also showcases that by using proper investigative work, one could have deduced that fact without even seeing the rest of the show yet. This tells me that Gravity Falls was a true masterpiece and the perfect love letter to hidden mysteries and theory-crafting.
"I actually believe that this image shows non me other than STANFORD pines" HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHHAAHHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHHAHAHAHAAHHAAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA you had no idea how right you were
at 2:00 , All I can do is laugh when you say :' I believe this is NOT stan's twin brother. I believe this is Stanford pines himself ' This is both true and false at the same time xD
I know. Some fan theories are so out there. Do you believe the Steven Universe fandom thinks Garnet is a fusion? That's about as silly as two Stans existing if you ask me.
This video gave me the chills and I don't know why. And it's incredible that the fandom kinda unburied the truth BEFORE "Not what he seems" and "A tale of two Stans" were released. :0 I'm impressed!
Maybe Stan is getting his "twin" back by making the portal. Because you know the swing set in one of the episodes when Bill enters Stan's mind? Yeah theres 2 swings and one is broken.. the reason why that one is broken is because Stanley ( the twin) is Missing! and why is he missing? Bill took him because maybe Stanley had the first book and Bill took Stanley away so Stanley won't use the portal to go to Bill's world. So now Stan is using the portal to get his brother back from Bill by entering Bill's world. Its just a theory..
So you mean to say, Dipper found the journal who was written by Dipper, but then wouldn't that mean Dipper would have to write the journals so that the next Dipper could find the journal and write the journals again so that his past Dipper can find the journals and restart the cycle? Sounds wwwwwaaaayyyy too confusing
The cleft chin Stan is from Stan's memory where as the other Stan they met while time traveling. Maybe Stan just remembers himself buffer and generally cooler looking.
it's crazy how this fandom pays so much attention to detail that they figured it out. i'm looking back at a lot of the old theories and a lot of them are true. i'm impressed
I didn't believe this theory when I first came across that theory. We can be idiots together! I love your theory of the author being Dipper. Maybe I'll write an entire AU baised off of that!
Interesting watching his “future Dipper” theory knowing that the two sets of Pine twins are set up to be mirrors of each other, with Dipper matching w/ Stanford the author
Also, there's no way Dipper wrote the journals. If he did, the entry on Gnomes would have listed their weakness as "leaf blowers", or just, you know, "violence".
Not necessarily. The lack of a weakness could mean that the version of Dipper that wrote the journals never actually found the journals to begin with. He never would have become suspicious of Mabel's boyfriend, and she probably would have just not come home one night. Maybe that version of Dipper started writing them because he was looking for his sister who just mysteriously disappeared one day?
Stephen Kelly Well, yeah. Some of the stuff in Gravity Falls, if they hadn't been solved, would have been pretty horrifying. Like, the journal had nothing to do with Mabel being chosen by the gnomes, that would have happened whether Dipper found it or not.
***** But then that would cause a paradox. Much like that King's Book paradox story, he finds the book in his past, and when the book becomes ruined, he re-writes it and travels back in time, but drops it. The young king finds it, etc etc. (Actually I guess it's not like it, but anyways...) After Mabel disappears and Dipper writes the journal (traveling back in time to bury it) Young Dipper would find it, discover Mabel's boyfriend is a bunch of Gnomes, and then not have a reason to write them, so he wouldn't. Then he would have never found them, because they wouldn't exist. But then he never would have found Mabel's boyfriend is a bunch of Gnomes, then writes the books. Young Dipper would find it, discover Mabel's boyfriend is a bunch of Gnomes, and then not have a reason to write them, so he wouldn't. Then he would have never found them, because they wouldn't exist. But then he never would have found Mabel's boyfriend is a bunch of Gnomes, then writes the books. TNTlover9 That depends on the kind of time travel in effect, and the time travel they've shown so far seems like it could handle that kind of thing. Not to mention they've got this "Time Baby" thing that seems to make sure time travel isn't used to mess anything up.
But if the license plate is a possible continuity error, couldn't you argue the same for the glasses? Maybe like the four fingers/five fingers thing with some characters they realized the design of the glasses in the Cipher Wheel and in "Carpet Diem" didn't actually work when worn by the intended character (whether it's Stanley or Stanford) so they modified the design to be more esthetically appealing? I think it's unlikely that the license plate is a continuity error because with all the intentional hidden codes and messages in the background, I think if an animator mistakenly assumed Stan's name was Stanley, then it would be something that would've most likely been corrected early on by Alex. It seems like too big of a thing to be a continuity error. Props to you for attempting to play devil's advocate on a popular theory. Whether it's a twin or not (and that doesn't matter in the long really) Stanford HAS to have a brother, as you mentioned, so I think the boy in the flashbacks was his brother and Dipper and Mabel's grandfather. However, I like your Dipper time-travel theory. At one point I too toyed with the idea that the author is Dipper (who has four fingers when it's stated by the shape-shifter to indeed have six fingers), and as I type this I'm thinking, what if you were right? What if Dipper's real name IS Stanley and he DID travel back in time and was stuck there or whatever...would that mean Dipper could be his own Grandpa? Love the videos man, as always!
due to how animation works, something like five fingers happening on a MOVING character that is drawn many many times wouldn't happen. Someone would notice before the animating was done. The license plate however is a background piece, which is drawn once, and maybe seen by a few people. It's far more likely for background pieces that aren't animated to contain errors... compared to the animated ones. Things that are animated in tend to be far more likely to be an actual story element.
It's so odd watching theories after we know the answers to them. I am so taken back that the fans ACTUALLY got this! The only thing is that Stan is StanLEY, and the twin is StanFORD :)
I’m currently watching Season 1 for the first time, and for a moment I actually thought I was onto something with this idea, until I watched this video and you made me realise how stupid I am lol. Anyway I can’t wait to see what really happens in Season 2.
2:05 “In fact, I’m quite certain that the man seen in this image is none other than Stanford Pines” And you’d be correct!! The issue being that Grunkle Stan is not Stanford lol. I know it’s a really old video, but I still find this funny
1:59 Find it pretty interesting how he guessed both right and wrong at the same time. Love looking at pre-Ford theories and what people thought was going on in the show as I had the luxury of watching the show after it finished and not having to wait for new episodes. Ford's introduction answered a lot of questions/theories fans had.
Well there are ways to change the timeline in gravity falls without causing a paradox (the time wish). I don't buy the theory, but there are clearly ways in this universe around paradoxes.
TNTlover9 That's not the point. The point of the theory is that Dipper is the author. You're the one bringing up paradoxes so I'm explaining how there would easily be a workaround for paradoxes. Again, I don't believe the theory, but he doesn't have to bring up the time wish in order for the theory to work.
I love this analyst. It really shows just how much you really enjoyed the series and I honestly think you did a good job. Obviously things ended up differently but this is really cool. I actually like what you were guessing here.
bro what if Alex talked with this guy and convinced him to make a "Stan doesn't have a twin" video to further lead away the fans from guessing the plot twist?😮😮
Ok I love the theory of Dipper interfering in the story with the time traveling, but it doesn't add up that Dipper would be the writer of the books because the writer has six fingers. And also the time 1982 is extremely important and that would mean that a Dipper from the future would've traveled back to that time and it just doesn't make sense.
Gary Berhiet In season 2 episode 2, "Into the Bunker," the shapeshifter said, when questioned about the author, "That six fingered nerd hasn't been himself for 30 years."
man i love having found this after so many years and then seeing the upload date. even in retrospect, lots of the points were atrocious but that just makes it more nostalgic to watch and i love this so much
1:50 Everyone commenting “yeah that dude IS Stanford hehe” is exactly why I would’ve been with you on this at the time. I wasn’t against the notion that Stan had a twin, I was upset that so many people had already accepted it as canon and made oodles of fan content of a reality that didn’t even end up being true. So yeah, I was a bit smug when it was revealed that 1. Stan’s TWIN was named Stanford and all the old content revolving around the twin theory being fact was now extremely confusing and 2. They never worked as “OG mystery twins” in Gravity Falls, in fact didn’t see each other for a decade after high school. I made me feel like, “Ha! That’s what you get for jumping the gun without knowing all the facts!” Because in a way, they WERE wrong. The man looking out at the snow WASN’T “Stanley”
Anyone else think that the disappearance of Sooses father and the glasses might be related? If you look back on the calender in the one room, the date of soos's birthday is HIGHLIGHTED. Maybe soos's dad stayed the night on the couch there every now and then? Maybe the reason the show hasn't revealed soos's dad is because HE IS THE AUTHOR. If stan was close to soos's dad, it would make sense that he would make phony post cards to cover in his absence since stan works as a scam artist. OR soos's father swapped bodys with the real stan and he hired soos to stay close with him. Why else would Stan say that he couldnt fire him if he wanted to? Im not saying theyre not twins, they still can be, im just saying that soos's father, the calender, the couch used for sleeping, and soos's mom implying that they dont get along can all be related!
The date circled on the calendar is July 4, 1982, Soos's birthday is July 13, either 1989 or 1990 I think Stan says he couldn't fire him if he wanted to is because Soos is kinda like family, and who else would work at the Shack with that much dedication on a terrible salary?
It totally makes sense! I thought about that too but not so deeply as you. Must be a connection between the cases, in Stan's interview( you can find the interview on RUclips) He said that Soos is sucks in his work , but he does not want to fire him "because it would break his heart." There may be another reason why he does not have fired him. Maybe he feels bad because he did something to his father. We also know that Mac Gucket wanted to erase his memory becouss he did something terrible. Perhaps the terrible thing he did he kill or do something bad to the father of a Soos and leave a small child without parents.
happychaosofthenorth Im not talking about the circled date, im talking about the red square that just so happens to be 9 days after july fourth. which would be soos's birthday. another unfortunate thing is that the show is questionably vague about the year setting of the show. theres no cannon statement from the makers saying what year it is, so most people assume its 2012 because thats when the show was aired. Common sense right? but what about the haunted convenient store? the news papers there are labeled 1995! Theres no way that the convenient store was left in tact for 17 years. So what Im saying is that the show can very possibly be set in 2000-2000's which would mean the wiki birth dates are invalid and that soos is actually born a whole lot earlier.
Gravity Falls is not just a series, it's a legend, it makes people more united than ever, an end is just the beginning for a bigger thing, Gravity Falls will never get old, LONG LIVE GRAVITY FALLS!

The glasses could be a continuity error as well, you are correct! It's all speculation :)
LewToons Thanks for the reply! Speculation is half the fun and part of the reason why this show is so awesome because there is so much room for it!
LewToons Glasses are a SPEC-ulation. eh :) sorry . i'll disappear now
Raskyl Flarestrike LOL I SEE what you did there!
due to how animation works, something like five fingers happening on a MOVING character that is drawn many many times wouldn't happen. Someone would notice before the animating was done. The license plate however is a background piece, which is drawn once, and maybe seen by a few people. It's far more likely for background pieces that aren't animated to contain errors... compared to the animated ones. Things that are animated in tend to be far more likely to be an actual story element.
watching old theories years after the show ended is so fun. we were so close yet so far
It's so odd watching theories after we know the answers to them. I am so taken back that the fans ACTUALLY got this! The only thing is that Stan is StanLEY, and the twin is StanFORD :)
man he has a secret twin!? what a rip off!
eh I predicted it about a year ago.
STAN DOES HAVE A TWIN! LOOK AT THE NEWEST EPISODE OF GRAVITY FALLS!
I JUST SAW IT TOO :O ;O
YEP!
AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!-read that in dippers voice
redhed645 xD
Mind.
Mad respect for keeping this one up to this day.
That last theory would be a great twist XDD
I’m currently watching Season 1 for the first time, and for a moment I actually thought I was onto something with this idea, until I watched this video and you made me realise how stupid I am lol. Anyway I can’t wait to see what really happens in Season 2.
I love how every time Lewtoons chalks something up to a continuity error it is proved wrong
Gravity Falls is an amazing show :)
This is comedy gold, and also made me realize how well they foreshadowed ford.
2:05
“In fact, I’m quite certain that the man seen in this image is none other than Stanford Pines”
And you’d be correct!! The issue being that Grunkle Stan is not Stanford lol. I know it’s a really old video, but I still find this funny
Who is in 2024🎉
Me
Also me
1:59 Find it pretty interesting how he guessed both right and wrong at the same time. Love looking at pre-Ford theories and what people thought was going on in the show as I had the luxury of watching the show after it finished and not having to wait for new episodes. Ford's introduction answered a lot of questions/theories fans had.
Honestly, the "Dipper being the author" theory sounded less like Gravity Falls and more like some sort of Back to the Future mumbo jumbo
Wow. They got this SO close.
Your "Dipper is the author" theory causes a paradox.
Well there are ways to change the timeline in gravity falls without causing a paradox (the time wish). I don't buy the theory, but there are clearly ways in this universe around paradoxes.
But he said nothing about a Time Wish in his theory.
TNTlover9
That's not the point. The point of the theory is that Dipper is the author. You're the one bringing up paradoxes so I'm explaining how there would easily be a workaround for paradoxes.
Again, I don't believe the theory, but he doesn't have to bring up the time wish in order for the theory to work.
There's no reason why the books couldn't have been caused by a time travel paradox.
Because you know, paradoxes in fiction make all the sense in the world. Seriously, don't overthink the nature of paradoxes in fiction.
I love this analyst. It really shows just how much you really enjoyed the series and I honestly think you did a good job. Obviously things ended up differently but this is really cool. I actually like what you were guessing here.
OH BOY, This did not age well
bro what if Alex talked with this guy and convinced him to make a "Stan doesn't have a twin" video to further lead away the fans from guessing the plot twist?😮😮
this is a really good theory but it's so funny to look at this after the series is over
chat i lowkey think he doesnt have a brother
the truth hit him like a old car
Ok I love the theory of Dipper interfering in the story with the time traveling, but it doesn't add up that Dipper would be the writer of the books because the writer has six fingers. And also the time 1982 is extremely important and that would mean that a Dipper from the future would've traveled back to that time and it just doesn't make sense.
The show doesnt really state the author has six fingers it could just be a symbol or somthin.
Gary Berhiet In season 2 episode 2, "Into the Bunker," the shapeshifter said, when questioned about the author, "That six fingered nerd hasn't been himself for 30 years."
Tigana what if its not 6 fingers on one hand but 6 in all and he made only one hand to save space
TheHaloreacherz2779 The newest episode confirmed tht Stan DOES hav a twin AND his twin IS the author.
i cried when i saw mabel cry... it broke my widdle ol heart
Naw, I think Soos' father is the author of the journals
That would explain why he disappeared.
My hesitation to that is that It's being VERY heavily hinted at. I think Hirsch is looking for a long term twist. But who can say for sure :)
LewToons Chad wheres that part 2 to that anime list
TheDannyd100 working very hard on it - hope to release this weekend or early next week!
awesome!
Well lewtoons?
I’m waiting.
And have been waiting for the last 6 years.
Gio D I'm watching this AFTER the show ended! LOL😂
Notice how this came out on the the day of Stanford's reveal
It didnt...
+Brayden Tell Oh my bad, read Jan as Jul
No that's march this was made in January
I'm just laughing at this video now that Stanley has been confirmed to have a twin
I can just imagine this guy watching the episode as Stanford coming out of of the portal and him just yelling fuck
This aged like milk
It aged like fine wine
4:18 Oh, they believed Stan's name was Stanly alright...
Just, they weren't wrong.
man i love having found this after so many years and then seeing the upload date. even in retrospect, lots of the points were atrocious but that just makes it more nostalgic to watch and i love this so much
1:50 Everyone commenting “yeah that dude IS Stanford hehe” is exactly why I would’ve been with you on this at the time.
And, look. It turns out that Stanley was the author.
Actually, I think Stanford is the author, and that Mabel and Dipper have been living with Stanley all summer. That's why the car says, "STNLYMBL"
Raven889 I guess you didn't finish the new episode?
Well, we're not sure if his name is Stanley. It could be since Alex made the theory come true.
BruisingSolid89 hes giving a new theory my friend
Its probably the carpet in stanleys/stanford room that swapped their minds
Raven889 naaa remember when they enter stans mind
The date circled on the calendar is July 4, 1982, Soos's birthday is July 13, either 1989 or 1990
I think Stan says he couldn't fire him if he wanted to is because Soos is kinda like family, and who else would work at the Shack with that much dedication on a terrible salary?
It totally makes sense! I thought about that too but not so deeply as you. Must be a connection between the cases, in Stan's interview( you can find the interview on RUclips) He said that Soos is sucks in his work , but he does not want to fire him "because it would break his heart." There may be another reason why he does not have fired him. Maybe he feels bad because he did something to his father. We also know that Mac Gucket wanted to erase his memory becouss he did something terrible. Perhaps the terrible thing he did he kill or do something bad to the father of a Soos and leave a small child without parents.
Maybe sooses dad is stans brother
"The handyman knows more than you think"
happychaosofthenorth Im not talking about the circled date, im talking about the red square that just so happens to be 9 days after july fourth. which would be soos's birthday. another unfortunate thing is that the show is questionably vague about the year setting of the show. theres no cannon statement from the makers saying what year it is, so most people assume its 2012 because thats when the show was aired.
Then 2 years later, there was the Season 2 episode Stan is Not What He seems.... even though his brother's name isn't confirmed.
Is "confirmed" alex said that the STNLYMBL plate was a clue
Gravity Falls is not just a series, it's a legend, it makes people more united than ever, an end is just the beginning for a bigger thing, Gravity Falls will never get old, LONG LIVE GRAVITY FALLS!
boy, did this age.
RUclips just recommended this to me and I have no words lol
"As of right now we're waiting for the second half of season two" I can't
it might be crazy what im about to say
thank you youtube for reccomending this to me now of all times
Not What He Seems: 'imma end this man's whole career'
3:16 love how in the journal it says that Stanford keeps sparse since they break all the time lol.
2:00 that awkward moment when you were binge watching season 1 wondering who the author was and he was right there in front of your face
To think they were so close. God, Gravity Falls insanity is a real thing, but sometimes it leads to finding the truth.
This aged well!
