Good worker that Kerrie, can we have a bit more of her on the videos , so quiet, does she enjoy the job , did kerrie learn all about bees from you , may be a sit down interview , that would be interesting .
Great video Ian.....only those lucky enough to be raised in the country can appreciate the rolling thunder of springtime....great team work....complete harmony....
You have a generous and gracious sense of humor...cheers to you, good sir. Deepest thanks for the long, gratifying scene of cleaning the top bars with thunder/lightning in the background. That is something we only get to hear once every ten years or so, here in Central Cali. It makes me miss those northern spring storms...but still don't miss the 6 months of winter! Had to shake out my first colony today. Don't know if I will ever be able to get used to that... Thank you for your instruction. It gave me the confidence to make the decision and move forward. 🙏😶
Great video Ian. We have, here in Ireland, the Gorse. Ideal pollen supplier. Followed by daphodils and later hazel, poplar, birch, and other flowers and trees. Every color of pollen from white to bright orange. At this very moment I expect a call for putting my hives in Oilseedrape fields. So I think we are a bit farther in the season as you are now. Good luck. Keep on doing the right thing
Always so good to see that new pollen coming in after winter :) or anytime of the year, Nucs are looking really good and considering the amount of bad weather you have had. Great to see you so happy the frustration of weather looked to be really getting you down.
Ian, how many gallons of syrup do you give them in a spring? In Seattle, Washington we never have pollen issues, it's available even before the bees comes out. Filberts (February), then alders/dandilions (March), maples, fruit trees, etc (April), but my girls take all the UltraBee I feed them, never from feeders, in a patty. But nectar flow only starts in April from Big Leaf Maples. I am a month ahead of your, and I think I am 2-2.5 gallons in each colony. Also, is extra head space inentional to collect burr comb, or unintentional consequence of need to feed patty?
It's also fun to watch them come in. Like dive bombers dropping into sight, slow down and in the box they go. Funny when they land on their back, reminds me of a turtle on it's back.
Hi just tip tray when smoking the bees work up wind ,tray a hook on the smoker , hooking on the side of hive keeping the bees down , less time handling smoker ! May I say ,great to watching you in your lovely country, Chris from ENGLAND ps this year I hope to restart my own beekeeping, rather many years --------- !
Hi Ian, we have had pollen coming in for a week or so now. I live in NB. You are still adding patties, if the bees dont use them do you save them or discard. I did not know the bees are getting nectar from the trees. Thanks for letting us know that. I see bees coming in and marching straight in without pollen. So they are getting nectar with that pollen. Here in New Brunswick we say " Paul - in " but we understand " pole - in ".
Just no deep sighs of relief from all that nice weather Ian, let the trees bloom first next time lol. I marked first pollen in Ontario on April First, last year was the 13th so it was a bit early, but we had bad weather so even though it was early they didn't get out for it much.
This may have already been asked, but I see u only use 1 Apivar strip per hive. Recommendation on package is 1 per 5 frames. Does 1 per 10 work OK for u?
I prefer the pronunciation p-oh-llen, over the pronunciation p-ah-llen. Not sure which is correct. Perhaps both. Your pronunciation just sounds right. I love the way Canadians speak English, and I love all of our northern neighbors, Eh?
For how long do you keep the strips in? The producer advises 42 days and then another 2 weeks wait before adding honey supers. Do you follow their recomendations? Great looking nucs!
Such a politically correct answer! Oh, Canada! I guess I will have to wait for the next episodes for the answer. Once again, great looking hives! And good job with showing us, mere beekeepers, how it's done properly!
Were you going to sell some nucs to raise some bee money after the farm cut your budget or do you usually sell nucs annually as another income stream? I've not heard you mention selling bees before.
I love seeing your enthusiasm for your bees. Also your casual relaxed attitude when working your yards. ( Maybe it's a Canadian thing) And it's funny how the economy of movement is different is between a backyard enthusiast and a commercial beekeeper. I'm always trying to be careful not to squash bees when replacing lids/boxes etc, but I can guess the reason why. Well done mate. ( From Australia)
Jim from NSW Australia. Been tuning in for a while Ian. Myself & camera-lady Jess are working on some vids with an Aussie flavor. Getting closer to running them out on RUclips.. probably one every 3 weeks. Be sure to have a look. Shall give you the 'heads-up'. cheers Mate

Excelente tu sistema de trabajo; como así también el equipo de tareas. Desde Argentina. Felicitaciones y saludos!!
Who is the new guy with smile on his face? Hey, I changed to saying pullen, you can’t change back to pollen now😁

I always thought it was amazing that the bees leave the easy to get pollen and syrup you have out and they go off to get the natural stuff
I guess to them its like eating burnt toast until you can go get a fresh loaf of bread,, awesome how they know which pollens are better
Hamish Pulley yeah exactly.great comment.

There are virtually no bees here, as 100's of bees fly right in front of him. Haha
Working bees with the sound of thunder. Love it!
In Scandinavia the white pollen is blueberry but it looks a little early for you. Great channel! Very inspiring.
The food you give them...is it just for them to survive. Or will that also be used for making honey. Thanks for all the info..
Do you ever harvest the propolis separate to the wax scrapings? It's a growing market. (scrapings off the sides of the nuc box and lid)
John Rogers yes

Ian - what, if anything, will you do with the propolis you scrape into the plastic tubs?

First! 6 framers JAMMING! I've seen bees bringing in dull white ,waxy pollen from Chicory before
What are you scraping off the box covers as you place the mite strips and packets in the hives?

What is the name of what they use to separate the supers full of honey and after they change it, they place it in ariva with that kind of separator
Bees were pretty calm with ol'thor knocking so close.

I’ve never really gotten the importance of inner covers but: Why do the nucs not have covers when the ten frame boxes do?

Hey Ian was wondering why u don't put bubble wrap or foamy on your nucs?
Mark Epping
I plan on it, I have not had a chance to modify the tops
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Why are you scraping into the tub ?
If someone wanted to buy one of your nucs how would one do so?
so its ok to just use 1 strip in a single deep ? they always say use 2 per deep
one strip per 5 frames of bees, the second strip goes in after the nuc is transfered into a 10 frame single
