    How neat that one of my favorite youtubers got into mechanical keyboards around the same time as me. Btw, an affordable and excellent one to start with is the Royal Kludge RK84. I started with a GK61 and it was so loud and pingy regardless of the switch you choose, not to mention your switch selection is limited to Gateron opticals. The RK84 is 3 and 5 pin, bluetooth, and has far better acoustics.

    I love mechanical keyboards and Im waiting for my m65c to come in but I just got the Logitech max mini and the function keys are so helpful. The backlight, volume, play pause, and flow software is so good. The fact that it has a visual overlay for both pc and Mac is great for me. And since I use both pc and Mac for work it just works out.
    Tell us more about the software and hardware mod you did. I’m curious to how it works and do you feel the software is better in your old logi board?

    • @MatthewEncina
      @MatthewEncina  2 года назад

      Well most of the boards I own can use VIA for very simple remapping. The other board needed a custom controller to be reprogrammed, but unfortunately didn’t use VIA and needs to be hardware reset for reprogramming. A lot more work for something so simple. But it’s because it’s a much older keyboard.

    Hey Matt, great perspective you are bringing to this hobby. Glad you are here! I've been following you since Build the Brand days.
    From your perspective, how much has buying into the entry level keyboard helped you?
    When I first started 2 years ago, I felt like I've wasted so much time and resources tuning the Keychron K2 when I could've save up a little bit more and get a more enjoyable mid range keyboard. Albeit, entry level has evolved so much.

    • @MatthewEncina
      @MatthewEncina  2 года назад

      I think it's worth starting entry-level and learning how to tune and mod it. That way you can explore feel, sound, switches, etc. Once you have a clue of what you enjoy, then I would invest in a better board vs buying another entry-level board. But that's just me. There are plenty of people who truly enjoy the entry-level market because of the practical price, and they love modding.

      @@MatthewEncina That's great to hear. It was definitely funny seeing how easy it was for you be sucked into the hobby. Same thing for Mr. Ben Burns.
      When I started, there weren't as many option for entry, easy to mod boards. Mostly were prebuilt and you have to desolder to mod it. Time spent modding versus result was not quite as rewarding of a tradeoff.

    The Zenith is such a wonderful board. Pwner's design is spot on-I love the special "Cherry lip" in the front, a lovely throwback to keyboards of yore. I actually own several because I'm just that into the layout. If you get some aftermarket plates, you can customize it even further! I have an FR4 plate in one of mine, and the difference from the brass plate is just *chef's kiss*. Same for the Mode65, an FR4 plate along with the plate foam in that thing is really, really nice. (Also, I hope you preordered the Sonnet!)

    • @MatthewEncina
      @MatthewEncina  2 года назад +1

      Thanks Cameron! I really LOVE the "Cherry lip" as well. I did purchase a FR4 half-plate for the Zenith from Hype Keyboards. Excited to try it. Curious, did you try to add any foam or dampeners to yours?

    • @hartmarque
      @hartmarque 2 года назад +1

      @@MatthewEncina Nice, that's where I got mine! But nope, no go on the foam or dampeners. This actually came up in the Ion Discord channel the other day, funnily enough. It's got a pretty low clearance (under 3mm), so foam wouldn't work very well (would probably make it sound kinda dead since it'd be *so* squeezed in). I wish it worked, though, I really love the effect it has on the Mode keyboards.

      @@hartmarque Same. I love the sound on the Eighty! Sinc eit has low clearance you might be able to fit in some Custom PE foam from www.greendoorgeeks.com/. (If you like the osund of PE foam)

    You should also also looking at keyboards with less focus on aesthetics and more focus on usability, it's a whole different side of the custom keyboard space more focused on improving the functionality and usability of the keyboard and not so caught up on aesthetics and sound. The standard keyboard layout was created no the IBM days 40 years or more ago and that layout already brought things from the typewriter days. It's almost like the keyboard is stuck int time. I use a 30 key and a 47 key ortholinear keyboards with heavily customized keymaps to better suit my native language (Portuguese) and my workflow as a UI/UX designer, while having as little hand movement as possible as to not aggravate all the injuries I collect while cycling.
    Making the keys come to you instead of reaching for them and using all the powerful qmk features to make a fully functional keyboard with as little keys as possible.
