Harrison Hammett Music I don’t think it applies here since they really need clean instruments to operate and his good technique is not on the same level as physical sterilization, since Matt is only making sounds with his drums
He's only able to play this dense because of the context. Aggressive music like AAL is so cluttered and and busy (in a good way) that it calls for the drum parts to be like this. If he played in this style in any other musical genre it would probably be over the top.
+Jan Flöer is that even a comparison? They're in different genres and different leagues I think. Gray is clean, so is Greiner. Hell, so are a lot of other people. Let's just keep the prof drummers involved haha
+TheBlackjack182 hey man, don't overestimate yourself!!! look at how he's shaking his head, doesn't look that easy to me... some odd meters are counting there :D
Well I mean, in the drumming community he's fucking massive at the moment. I agree that he doesn't get 'enough', he deserves more... but it's not like he's totally unknown, I mean the Tooth and Claw vid has almost 600k views
He is really good but I wouldn't put him up there with Tomas Haake, Gene Hoglan, Marco Minnemann or Gavin Harrison. I'd say he's just on the level beneath them but that is only my opinion.
Each one of those dudes has 10 years minimum on him in age. Also fuck yeah I would, Are you hearing the displacement right now? Also you do know that AAL and Tesseract are both huge meshuggah fans, and alot of their material has subtle influences in it. Also matt is a jazz/ funk/ gospel drummer, primarily, so don't put odd time sigs beneath him lol.
do you play the drums? because of everyone i know who is at the level where they can cover progressive metal songs half decently, only the most conservative ones would put matt at the same level as the rest of them, but everyone else would classify him as slightly above, all things considered
The dry drums really accentuate the superhuman level of his timing and technique. Reverb and ringing can hide tiny imperfections in playing, but there aren't any here that I can detect. There are a lot of REALLY stupendously good drummers, but this is kind of on its own level. I don't think many drummers, even the truly really talented ones, ever aspire to quite this level of perfection. What a rush to know it CAN be done by a mere human, though.
@@derrickdavis5390 man that guy is on a whole nother level... seriously how can anybody play colors all the way through without stopping? Let alone doing that night after night with no notable signs of fatigue... that's the big thing here you have to think the stuff these guys play has to be easy enough for them to play over and over again
Gosh this I love this dudes style...so much has been done already, there's not many more ways to play the drums, but this guy has something unique going on here.
i love how prog metal has so much jazz and fusion influence. ive always been into jazz, funk, and latin and you hear so many of the rhythms in that music in prog . its awesome.
I remember hearing about this young, up-and-coming drummer back in the mid-90s. His parents managed a video rental store in a small rural town in Massachusetts. They saved every penny they had for his drum lessons. I look at him today, and it's amazing.
What I love about this is he could have totally used a different take where he didn’t rim out, but he is so skilled and so confident that he’d rather you see the mistakes he makes than see some fake perfection
All I can say is wow!! I don't know why I only found these videos today!! Flipping amazing, everything sounds so crisp, especially the cymbals. Have to love Matt, amazing drummer!
Matt plays drums like a painter paints. You can see (hear) the big picture, but upon closer inspection you notice tiny little details that you would never have thought blend into something bigger so well. This guy truly is amazing, and I've been playing drums at a relatively high level my entire life.
I will never understand why people downvote things like this. It's a great and very solid cover! Too much negativity in the world and especially online. Keep up the great work, Matt!
It's crazy how much better he's gotten in these short couple of years. Watching the playthroughs of the songs on the new album you can definitely see the improvement.(like he needs any though )
+Carl Coral So I was surfing the Facebooks recently, and I came across a post about Tommy Lee going upside down during a solo. And I commented saying he really wasn't THAT good. People were angry, and I'm like well he's no Garstka. I was called a dumbass and I didn't respond. This video rests my case
that was so good...really liked the changes at the end. i used to be able to play along to the music i like...not anymore...maybe again one day in the future... :)
came back to watch this again after matt released a new version 8 years later, and you can definitely see his progress, 8 years of polish and growth. But the fill in this one at 1:46, is the tastiest fill Ive ever heard in my life. I know it must be some sort of a flamadiddle or something, but it is just TOO funky. geez.
This has to be the most dampened drum mix I have ever heard - which speaks a lot about Matt’s playing. I wouldn’t dare playing this dry, nowhere to hide all the imperfections.
That snare is permanently haunted. Holy shit his ghost notes game is on point.
I was spooked a little
His whole damn kit is sp00ky my dude.
Perfect band to spend Halloween with :)
His drumming is so clean, doctors use it to sterilize wounds.
Harrison Hammett Music I don’t think it applies here since they really need clean instruments to operate and his good technique is not on the same level as physical sterilization, since Matt is only making sounds with his drums
Best comment to ever exist....!!!!!
Raph Courte dont have to take everything seriously man lmao
I laughed so hard
@@raphcourte420 not sure if retarded or sarcasm 🤔
He has mastered being busy without being too much.
It's because he plays shit that's based off of the phrasing of all the other instruments.
thats what drums are for lol.
Words to live by for every guy looking for someone

What a very zen comment haha
I take music theory, and music theory takes Matt Garstka
OK.
Ok.
Paul bonkosky 😂😂😂
100% agree
OK.
Strange how Luke Holland's cover has 900,000 views and the original played by Matt only has 130k :D
Maybe because people know that it can be played by his creator but they wonder if there another human that is able to do this
Content is a popularity contest
Luke's a tool
luke looks better
Dale Thomas yep that’s why him and Matt are good friends lol
His technique is so clean I could use it as a dinner plate...
Shows you what four to six hours of practice a day at Berklee will get you right? Matt is such a monster.
+Jan Flöer is that even a comparison? They're in different genres and different leagues I think. Gray is clean, so is Greiner. Hell, so are a lot of other people. Let's just keep the prof drummers involved haha
Prog*
Damn it, I had completely forgotten about that. LOL!
+Jan Flöer Haha I also wanted to comment on that, but you already did.
The part that I would be able to do goes from 1:50 to 1:57
+TheBlackjack182 HAH! well played, or, not played.
Kyle Schweighardt Definitely not played lol
+TheBlackjack182 I'm pretty sure that realistically you could find a lot more parts that you would be able to play, but that was still damn funny :D
ghoawaynetcabo I appreciate that :) but no, I'm really not able to learn that kind of rhythm
+TheBlackjack182 hey man, don't overestimate yourself!!! look at how he's shaking his head, doesn't look that easy to me... some odd meters are counting there :D
This guy doesn't get enough recognition. I guess that's what happens when you're in a band with Tosin Abasi
Well I mean, in the drumming community he's fucking massive at the moment. I agree that he doesn't get 'enough', he deserves more... but it's not like he's totally unknown, I mean the Tooth and Claw vid has almost 600k views

are you sure?
I mean he kinda went and graduated from berkely school of music :/ so...

Was just thinking you'd have to be a good drummer to even play that kit it's so dry
Blake Richardson comes to mind

He's almost as good as the guy from Animals!
leonne castellas Kinda overrated tbh, the guy from As Leaders is kinda better.
He is the guy from animals you fucking idiot
The only idiot here is you, for not catching the sarcasm 😂
Ryan Walker I was as well being sarcastic
jamie gonnga i caught it. you sir trolled them well.
I practice to the metronome. The metronome practices to Matt Garstka.
Gosh this I love this dudes style...so much has been done already, there's not many more ways to play the drums, but this guy has something unique going on here.
He's got groove, chops, touch, creativity, speed, and a gorgeous drum kit. What more can you ask for?
here i am reading the comments and jumping from each fantastic part hes playing in this song
With every fill he asks me, "Who's your daddy?" I relent every time.
You are. Matt. You're my daddy.
ewwww

HOW DOES HE GET HIS SNARE TO SOUND LIKE THAT?? It sounds like a supercar exhaust. The deep ghost notes and high accents is to die for

They saved every penny they had for his drum lessons. I look at him today, and it's amazing.
The fact that he misses a hit a 3:04 makes me feel so good, he is finally human... The work and dedication this guy has...
Vincent Desmarais I don't see him missing tho
Ammar Abdulla, he was going for the rack tom.
He didn't miss the hit, the hit missed him.
I think you analized this just so you could say something negative about him while making it sound like a compliment
You can hear him miss it
Been on loop for over an hour. Just can't get enough
4:01 THAT WAS NASTY.
That's called a mega para-para-paradiddle lol
@@ZShenlong1 haha
Just when you think Oh man he messed up... oh wait...

0:46 that cymbal is so Br00000tal
Punched in the soul at 3:27
yessss sahhhh!!
Yeah! Maybe you should do a tutorial on how he did that :)
hey man, love your tutorials.
good one.
Fujiwara Keisuke the ride to tom sweeps are (kr)lrlkk looped and the splash part is rkk looped with a splash every 4 notes
Holy mother of sound I love those toms especially the floor toms. And the bass drum. And the snare. Fuck I love everything.
What I love about this is he could have totally used a different take where he didn’t rim out, but he is so skilled and so confident that he’d rather you see the mistakes he makes than see some fake perfection
Every bass drum hit a punch in the face
binzianer sounds like the "hit" sound in CoD
Plays $9000 drumset - still wears torn at heels jeans.
Love it!
+Viktor Ozerov my thoughts exactly
+Viktor Ozerov Pays for his own jeans
+Viktor Ozerov Drummers will understand. Long jeans heels can be a pain in the butt depending on your bass drum technique.
+busTedOaS I mean if you play $9000 drumset you should have the money to cut your jeans to the propper length.
Just joking around, relax =)
+Viktor Ozerov he is endorsed.
This drummer is soooo good ! Technique, groove, creativity...
Unbelievable how anyone can be this good
2 minutes listening to Matt Garstka feels like 9 minutes of real time.
Matt told me Abe Cunningham (Deftones) was a huge influence in his playing. gotta fucking love that!
Hes a perfect fit for Animals as leaders. You can tell hes gelled with them even more since he first started
This is a good christmas present
I love how dry his kit sounds. Raspy but beefy.
dry all the way...no lube. but yes I'm digging this sound....insane playing!
How can you not love hs drumming? I'm mesmerized by it. And inspired to do a cover of it too. ^_^
Devikah pls do some. ive subscribed at your channel just recently. ill check it out for sure
good luck xD
So....did you ever give it a shot?
I love watching a drummer who really knows what kicks are for! These fills are nasty!
so much talent in only one person
can i just say this is the most bad ass groove of all time
All I can say is wow!! I don't know why I only found these videos today!! Flipping amazing, everything sounds so crisp, especially the cymbals. Have to love Matt, amazing drummer!
He is such a passionate drummer
Man this cat has grown on me like crazy. What a master.

He's so sophisticated ....Grooves are really awesome
dude i love the dryness and almost dead sound of the whole kit! cymbals included!! And of the beast that is matt garstka!
I will never understand why people downvote things like this. It's a great and very solid cover! Too much negativity in the world and especially online. Keep up the great work, Matt!
this man was born with a smile on his face and an awesome power a rythm !
The transition ride is just pure love
This is so enjoyable to watch/see. Thanks for giving us this view!
I feel like I'm living on the edge while watching this. MAN!
One of the best drummers going. Undeniably incrediblr
Drums are in perfect damping and tuning. It's awesome.
A true master at his craft. Beautiful
It's crazy how much better he's gotten in these short couple of years. Watching the playthroughs of the songs on the new album you can definitely see the improvement.(like he needs any though )
Cheers and much thanks for uploading great videos every time, meinl cymbals.
Years later, I keep coming back to Matty "ghost note" Garstka🤘🏻🤪
you are honestly one of the greatest drummers i have ever seen
Such a talented player. Absolutely loving these drums too, they sound amazing and dry!
seeing this guy playing is so enjoyable
i love of how this man can play 3 different rhythms at once and you can't tell which one he is playing to XD
The most real drum playthrough I’ve seen
That's my dad right there. My father everyone.
+MrCJduo False.
+rollinfever15 true
+MrCJduo Not according to wiki. He's going to adopt me someday, I can feel it.
+rollinfever15 but... He said I was his forever... When he was teaching me how to incorporate rudiments into my playing. ;(
+MrCJduo Just because he wanted you to call him "daddy" one late night on an AAL tour doesn't mean he's your biological dad now.
4:09 WHAT.
Absolutely amazing it sickens me

Exactly my reaction.
Dude that offbeat fill catches me offguard every time
I normally hate really dry sounding kits, but this is fantastically dry and articulate
00:00 rare never seen before footage of Matt playing in 4/4
He loves music so much, and he understands it so well.
those ghost notes fill in the gaps during the low points of the song. so smooth
It's so pleasant to see Matt playing drums, and I'm guitarist, not drummer... It's like a perfect 10 gymnastic exercise
This reminds of when I wake up in the middle of night to drink water
I'm really glad they have started using live drums on their albums. It sounds so much better as a whole.
Dude, you are an absolute pleasure to watch and listen to. Just pure talent and entertainment across the board. Keep it up man!
If Matt keeps practicing, he may go far.
Precision, power, and passion!
He is so good at drumming.... but his drum face is a new level.... i love it
why does his drumming make me giddy? I feel high after listening to this.
I hope that this video doesn't get reported for top quality porn.
his precision kills me!
btw...i guess that is the perfect bass drum sound? really diggin it.
some people make it seem effortless, Matt Garstka makes it look involuntary
Easily one of my favorite drummer atm.
What did i just witness. This is amazing.
that was so good...really liked the changes at the end. i used to be able to play along to the music i like...not anymore...maybe again one day in the future... :)
That freakin part from 3:56 till 4:14 is so good and clean. Nice impro.
bassdrum surely packs a punch and the cymbals sound amazing. Snare and toms, no way!
let's hear another year next!!
drum mis so dry love it! how can people dislike this video?!
The opening groove is so sick!
So good. Amazingly technical, but still has fantastic feel.
I can't even program drums this cleanly. Good lord.

incredible to witness!
