  • Welcome back to the teardown series, where I take apart new and interesting pedals and show you what's going on inside.
This week we'll investigate the rare Earthquaker Zap Machine V2.
    Enjoy!

The Shin Ei FY2 Fuzz has a similar resistor divider filter at the output, it’s responsible for the mid scooped sound of the circuit (a common mod is to cut the cap to ground which restores the mids) the values are very different here obviously so I assume this part of the circuit in the Zap is for some minor tone shaping at the output stage

I would love to see your process of tracing circuits.

What an awesome thing to do, great work

That filter at the end is a mid range filter - it is similar to ones you see in the superfuzz, eqd terminal fuzz (fz2), Kay fuzz (bumble fuzz) etc The 470p at the end is probably just taking off some extra high end at the output

@@graybenchelec sorry me again! That 10n capacitor over the voltage divider to q3 acts to filter off high end. You can see it used in the Zvex woolly mammoth and anasounds feed me fuzz. Anasounds claim it gives a silicon fuzz face a more germanium sound by cutting some of the sizzle

@@davidsummers5310 yeah that one I have figured out since filming, I’ve actually used it in a tube amp across a plate resistor for the same reason, duh!

The 4u7 input cap should most probably be connected positive side to the Q base. Enjoying your output. Keep it up!

Agreed! But the schematic is correct to the pedal. I doubled check that one 👍

@@graybenchelec I've actually traced a Dream Catcher by EQD and it also featured one electro cap that was reversed similarly!

Hey man great channel and videos! i've seen that arrangment with resistors and cap in the Wampler Ecstasy overdrive , probably it uses a pot there with the cap connected to the wiper , so in this case could it be more or less the same result?
ps i would try to build this pedsl with some 2n2369

Cool video! I have been trying to understand what's going on inside mine for years! Most of the time I don't need both the red and green channel, and have hunted for something similar in a smaller enclosure to put on my small board. Can you highlight the difference between the red and green sides? I mostly use the red side, and it seems to me like it's got more "bite" to it than the green channel. The green channel sounds "softer" to me when set at similar gain.

So it is based around a Fuzz Face type circuit ! I bought the Zap Machine V2 years ago on Prymaxe and since then heard people saying it can cover some Big Muff territory, but I never really found that to be the case. It can go pretty heavy, but never as compressed as the Big Muff and it is way more touch sensitive as well ! Different beasts, to me at least !

According to the earthquaker dude it started as a zonk machine (aka TB MK I), hence the name. In circuit it's closer to a TB MKII though. Definitely vintage fuzz inspired either way you slice it. I don't hear that thick scooped fuzz I think of for the big muff.

Absolutely none. They are noisier. That's it.
But to gullible idiots they add "mojo" because they're old or something.

It’s a bummer how expensive these have gotten but thanks for biting the bullet and getting one to make this video. I feel like they’ll release a v3 in their legacy reissue series at some point but I’ll still probably want one of these older ones 🫣
