We quit because of the felling of being useless... Of being less talented, skilled, having no skate friends... Being afraid...
We come back because of being done with the life without the freedom of the ride.
We then quit because the freedom of the ride crushes by the wall of not having the freedom of movement we wish to have...
We come back again because nothing left but for doing this again.
Inbetween we achive moments of clearity in a timeless something no one can tell what it is... It's like with style - it is there, but noone can tell what it is, but it exists.

I know from experience it's hard, but if you can somehow do it, just skate. Or do any other sport you like. Sport is the best natural antidepressant. Sadly also one of the hardest to take once you hit rock bottom.

Lack of skill and improvement is on you bro bro an I’m not saying that to be a jerk but skateboarding is a self battle it’s you an the board you can’t let the board defeat you bro.. but I will tell you this as well I had a thyroid issue growing up made me fat as hell as a kid I loved skating so much that I had to try it.
I got laughed at all the time I just wanted to get a pro model an learn to cruise around effortlessly… I just kept at it an kept at it an now I’m one of the most graceful big men you ever seen on a skateboard (just pushing and riding wise I don’t try tricks cuz of my size it’s just not smart imo) you don’t have to be the best to skate or keep skating you don’t even need friends bro… when I moved to Oceanside when I was in my early 20s I would just cruise around at night, started skating this little hill by a chase bank I’d start there an skate all the way down to flat then track back up n do it again…that feeling of freedom is unmatched man an it’s always helped cure my depression.. a lot of people think you gotta be the best to do or love something man you don’t at all bro.. I’m 265 now I was almost 500lbs I will never stop skating bro until my body says I can’t and you should do the same bro… hope you don’t take that the wrong way I got nun but love for you G.. every skater iv met in cali that are actually GOOD to my face has told me “just be as good as YOU can be an that will satisfy us bro we’re just happy your trying”. It was fake skaters in Texas who could barley kick flip that would talk crap to me… lol so let that sink in man.. if you love it just do it for you!

    • @done.6191

Exactly. At a certain point, (depending on what kind of skating you enjoyed) you will no longer be able to do that kind of skating. And when that happens, we all make that decision...that a different kind can be fun, or that it's done and to know when to bow out.
I had the pleasure of skating frequently with people that one day became some of skating's legends, by being in the right places at the right times, and even for these pros, for many the decision eventually came to them as well. Like all of us old timers, we'll still get out the board and skate around, but TBH it often feels like the Rush song "Losing it."

    • @done.6191
      @done.6191 2 месяца назад +6

@toejamisgreat lol, so the only option in your mind is “ know magically when you will fall and go home first.” It’s ridiculous and not how skating works, even at the am and pro level. For the record I was a sponsored am for 4 years and skated daily for over 10, then another 10 off and on once I had a wife, kid, and responsibilities. EVERYONE falls, sometimes very badly, and not always by things you control like being over-amped or overtired . One wheelbite or tiny sharp pebble at the top of a takeoff can ruin your day. And when that happens at twenty, it is a LOT different than at 50, and there is no shame in acknowledging and accepting it. There are some genetic marvels that skirt this for a long time, and some lucky folks (I was lucky to only roll an ankle badly, and bruised my hip falling on vert in a bad way, but no breaks). But there comes a time when you grow to accept that skating is a young person’s game. And either you’ll still enjoy the less intense stuff as you age, or you won’t and will enjoy mostly watching, and that’s okay.

But I have so much full adult stuff to deal with like things around my home that need tending to, working on my car, taking care of my dogs, etc.

I am 62 and have skated off and on most of my life, and recently gotten back into it as well as started inline skating. As was mentioned by another viewer, as you get older, you have to adjust your expectations and skate within your acceptable level of pain and fear knowing that you aren't likely to escape the slam forever. I have a laundry list of injuries from various sports over the years and at my age, they ALL come back to haunt you. If you can't find an acceptable level of risk, skateboarding is probably not your sport, but sitting on the couch afraid of getting injured is not living, it's simply existing, and that's more scary to me than getting hurt.

Skateboarding has changed a ton. Back in the early 90s when I skated we only had 1 board in the car. We had no skateparks. Being in Minneapolis we broke into malls and warehouses in the winter. If we wanted to film we had to haul a big VHS camera. We were always jealous of people from California with your nice 365 weather. If we couldn't get into somewhere warm we hit parking garages. If it was 1 degree outside the parking ramp was 9. We would only have extra king pins in winter weather cause they would snap a lot in the cold. If I grew up in Cali I don't think I would have ever quit. Now at 49 I live vicariously through all of you on RUclips. Have fun, stay safe and keep posting cool shit.

people also quit skating when they find better / more interesting / gainful things to do with their time - not just because they become injured. I never quit .. just scaled back and I"m still walking at 50 for that correct choice and when I get on a board I still get the same feelings of when I was young but I don't have to 'show off' to the degree I put myself into danger and I never do things to try to impress others - never have - so the mental game of self induced competition is not in everyone's game - the guys I knew who were like that .. are now basically crippled - the proverbial 'self game' of delusional competition that goes nowhere - and they have a type of delusion as they age , never progress but push themselves to things that only a young person should be doing if you want to think logically and health wise.. Cheers thanks for sharing your experience.

That type of slam is called the "long term spine crusher" no apparent damage immediately, but the discs in your back eventually slip and sciatica will set in over months. As you age into your 40's this slam you will feel it constantly and needs surgery.

I'm 54...Started skating vert padless in the 80's, knocked myself out trying 540's. Thought about it. Then when the tiny wheel era came...Hung it up. Then saw Ben Pappas win a contest in NYC in the late 90's , came back. Knocked myself out again trying 540's ...Hung it up. Then the re-issue era came. Been back ever since. Fully padded this time when skating vert. Havent knocked myself out since. Also landed my first 540 at age 46. Only took 25 years and 2 ko's. Worth it!

i turned 38 a few weeks ago. started this year in january again after 19 years. never should have stopped.
due to my proffesion (IT) i build up an Fear Disorder. i quit after 10 years because of it and trying to combat it with skating.
i progressed rather fast at the beginning but now i hit a wall with vert. never was a vert skater always Street/Flatground.
Kinda weird how afraid i am now that i am older and i hate it so much. even tho i am really good at body control.
used to do so many risky things when i was younger and never felt any fear while doing it but now i am afraid of a rock to faky.
took me 1 month to overcome my fear of dropping in.
still somewhat afraid of it but i can do it now everytime without completely shitting my pants.
Skating sure as hell shows you what your are made of!

Started at age 40. It’s been so much fun but I mostly cruise around, no tricks. Injury is the BEST teacher. I slammed into my parked truck going downhill and LEARNED downhill is no joke and controlling my speed will save me. I slammed and cracked 2-3 ribs when my wheels hit a small rock one evening. I LEARNED low light riding is not for me and if I see a few rocks on the path just get off instead of trying to pummel through so I don’t get launched off my board when it stops on a dime. Am 43 now and headed to SanDiego to skate the boardwalk!

I hella slammed the a few weeks ago too. I got the clip but I had to take 2 weeks off and then I had to have a tooth extraction. Getting back into the groove sucks but it's all a part of why I don't quit. Every time I slam I am forced to learn how to rest. Resting is a super valuable skill, especially when your icing the injury, because if you do it right, you find that when you come back to skating, you kind of suck for like 3 days but then you start making hella progress. Sorry you got hurt man, I know it sucks! Thanks for making these though because us 35 and older skaters really understand what your going through and vice versa. Cheers man!

I hadn't skated since highschool. I'm 38 now and at the end of last August I'd gotten a longboard. 3 weeks later BAM! Broke my shoulder. I was super depressed and skating was the one thing I had. It wasn't a couple weeks after breaking my shoulder I hopped back on the damn thing in my sling. Skated for a couple months in that thing. My balance after removing the sling and having an extra appendege to flap around was pretty incredible.

Most of the people I skated with growing up quit due to partying/ drug use more than skating and getting older with the risk of injuries. Also by our mid 20’s a lot of us were going in all different directions. Finding a new group to skate with or just stick it alone isn’t impossible, it just killed a lot of motivation for me.

I finally realized it was because I needed to skate. My whole life it was a part of my identity, kept me in shape, kept me in the sun and kept me challenged.

I still skate and go to work w/ 5 kids. I skate to unwind, relax, fitness purpose, have fun by myself or w/ my kids and feeling the freedom.
50-50s, 5o's Boardslides and etc are what I have left and I still find happiness when doing them.
I just skate regularly like 3x a week for muscle memory and to avoid injury.

I quit skateboarding because of the pain meds I was taking from broken bones. It eventually became more important than skating. Now that I’m 36, I already have arthritis in my ankles which has gotten so bad that I’ve had to stop working in construction. I still have a lot of love for skating and appreciate the time I had doing it. I do wish that I spent more time stretching and eating right. I also wish I had focused more on technical stuff instead of big gaps.

Dang! Glad you’re getting better Zack. You are right about getting hurt more often when progressing, and I think it is because when you are progressing you are feeling good, so you keep trying to ride that wave, meaning you continue to try harder tricks therefore you are more likely to fall and get hurt, as compared to skaters that stick to doing the tricks they already know and are used to. Mind you those skaters that stay in their comfort zone can still fall and get hurt, as we all have off days, but it is more likely to happen on the former scenario.

I quit skating because I was fractally stupid - by being stupid enough to not wear wrist protection skating ramps, by taking drugs so I wouldn't realize my wrist was in fact broken and didn't bother with ER and stuff either.
Took plenty of metal to fix a few years later and I had been lucky because the first hospital wanted to jump remove a number of my hand bones and stiffen the rest with a metal spider..
However, I couldn't help myself to at least pick up cruisers again after getting sober 7 years ago which proved little satisfying so I'd get into surfskating - and from there I tried skating miniramps again after a hiatus of ten years in may and found a surprising amount of tricks still dialed in even though I rode an unsuited surfskate.
I got a popsicle setup the next day - and a set of knee and wrist guards as well as a helmet whom to wear I'm old enough now age 37 I suppose.. 😅

I skated alot when i was 10 to 17, and at 17 i dislocated my shoulder in a highschool football game, resulting in a torn labrum. I never went to the dr, and over the next 2 years i would have chronic shoulder dislocations, from skating to putting on a shirt, to even sleeping it would dislocate. (excruciating pain every time) eventually i decided to get the surgery, and it was successful but i lost 20% of full range of motion in my left shoulder, but gained increased stability. Now in my 30's, i got a long board last year and really just enjoy cruising around on that. So basically, a non skate related injury, carried over into skating, and ultimately just ended up giving my board to a kid at the skate park and then moved on with life.

I used to tell myself that I don’t want to skate anymore because I didnt have all my friends to skate with anymore but honestly the times I did go skate it just felt boring. That and the fact that I can’t get hurt in my line of work or I can’t work and also took up golf before I moved and it’s a lot more enjoyable and easy on the body. I guess in my experience it just got boring after doing it non stop for 15 years.

    I tore my patellar tendon.
While 4 years later i have full function, i can run, squat, ect. I can feel it that my knee cannot take hard impact like it used to. Its just a feeling in my knee that i know it cant, even though ive had years of building the muscle back it doesnt matter, something is just different.
And skating is my #1 passion above literally everything else in life, hobby wise.

Skateboarding was like my entire identity in my teens and 20s. In my 30s now, haven't skated in months. Only seriously ever skate like 2-4 times a year. But I don't consider myself to have "quit" skateboarding. It just naturally becomes less doable though. I work full-time, with commute, which means skateboarding in the week is not possible unless I want to spend 1 of my 2 hours at the end of the day doing it outside in the dark. The weekend? Well have all the other stuff life requires to do then.. Seeing friends, family, paying bills, cleaning, getting my car inspected, getting a haircut, going to the drycleaner, getting groceries etc etc etc. On the few weekends a year I decide "I am going to skateboard today," it's not like it used to be... The progression is over. It's just a few of the flatground tricks that I've been comfortable with because I've done them 1,000s of times, riding around, doing easy stalls and 50-50s on the transition. There's stuff like "I'm sure I _could_ ollie that 6 set, and I would probably land it," but is it worth it? No. Not going to be progressing on it like I would have when I was 20 anyway, the most I will do is an ollie, falling hurts 10x more where I used to be able to try a fliptrick 40 times again and again falling every single time until I got it. Even _landing_ successfully to flat does not feel good.
I still have a board in the trunk of my car, still wear skate shoes as my casual shoes outside of work, still can bust some tricks out, and still consider myself a "skateboarder." I haven't "quit," but I've just accepted it is going to be a rare activity in my life as an adult and there is no way around that.

Started skating around 8 and kept skating until 13. I quit bc I had no one to skate with, my parents wouldn’t let me go street skating outside of my neighborhood which had nothing but flat roads and curbs. It took me around a year to learn how to Ollie and honestly never got better than that. I hit a fs180, or more like a 120, and a half cab, both only one time. I was bored of the only skate park I was allowed to go to, the other one was in the hood and my parents were scared to let me go. With no friends, no progress, no good spots, all my motivation slowly drained. I didn’t skate for like a year now so when I tried to skate again I had a hard time balancing and couldn’t even do an Ollie while moving. I have a huge amount of respect for people with talent but it felt impossible to me and like I simple wouldn’t ever be able to go any further with it

I’m currently going through that “going through the motions” part of skating. I’m not dealing with any injuries, but there’s just other things going on in my life. So finding the time to skate has become difficult. Also a few years ago I switched to a night shift job, so even when I find time to skate I’m usually alone. So what I’m realizing in my 40’s is a mixture of my schedule not lining up with the other local skaters. And it so hard to self motivate when skating alone, that you wind up just doing the same few tricks at the same spots. And never really pushing yourself to learn anything cause, what’s the point you’re alone! And I find myself just thinking “why am i even still doing this?!” That add on top of that I’m in my 40’s so when I do slam, it fucks my everyday life up even longer now. I’ve been struggling really bad the last few weeks, even considering quitting all together. I’ve never even given that a serious thought in over 25 years! Like I’ve made it out every year, but this year has felt way different. I know I’ll actually not quite, but it’s getting harder for me to justify it …..

I somehow didnt injure myself seriously (i sprained my ankle once) but i know a lot of people who werent so lucky. The sad truth of skateboarding is one bad fall can literally ruin your life, especially how skaters basically refuse to wear helmets (when every other extreme sport does) i just dont see it as a worth while thing for me to do anymore. Do I miss it? Yeah. Do I want to fall on my side hard because I rode into a pebble again? No.

I stopped skating after 10 years because of a serious knee injury. Couldn't skate to the level I was accustomed. Plus when you get to a certain level and you're chasing the high you get from landing difficult and dangerous tricks, you tend to get injured more frequently. That turns into can't get no satisfaction.

I stopped for 15yrs because my job as a brickie was to hard on my body and I couldn't afford time off work, i just turned 40 and left bricklaying so I picked a board up again and my first day back I tried a simple nose revert but apparently these days they like to polish the concrete and it was slippery so I bailed and hit the coping with my wrist and at first felt fine but I have been out for days now, managed to go back 4 days later and stayed away from the hp but it made me realize it's going to take ages to get it back. My biggest regret in life was stopping skating because no matter how much money I earn I feel depressed as hell without it

I learned to skate for a little more than two months. I only did manuals and practiced Ollies. No bad falls, just average falls you'd expect. I was wearing full protective gear, knee, elbow and wrist pads, helmet. I literally needed surgery on my right wrist because I ended up incrementally tearing my TFCC. Same on the left, but didn't require surgery. Missed months of office work because my wrist hurt a lot when I had to type 9 to 5. Sucks. I love skating, gives me thrilled I didn't know existed. But it's just not worth this kind of injuries that will literally never heal again.

For me, Old Bones therapy compression wrist wrap helped with injury, and I actually love wearing it even when I’m 100% because it prevents injury and boosts my confidence during falls. ❤

I started skating again after 30 years at 47 years old and I'm still at it after a broken humerus, multiple bruised ribs and a year and 2 months later. The only way I stop again, and I hope it's many years down the road, would be paralysis or death. I'm a better, healthier, more positive human being when I'm on my big ol' 9.3 Eric Dressen Rose Crew one! Keep shreddin' out there!

One thing my mentor said i was good at is that I have passion for learning new things. I recently started skateboarding, I'm super slow and in public I get judged a lot for being a beginner and it feels like crap to feel like a failure sometimes I want to quit but there's one problem. I just can't quit forever, I love the feeling of the board under my feet its both anxious and calming, I love the feeling of getting it right even for a sec. And this is the first I've done any form of exercise and liking it. I don't believe in quitting cause its a permanent word, I just skate for myself in private at the moment.

its extremely hard, it physically exhausts you, for 99.99% of people its a cost, and above all theres the risk of injury. if you work a job where you need to be able bodied or you're being relied on for your kids or whatever risking your capacity to do that to have fun is just selfish.

for kids / teens tho its the best thing ever, skating literally stopped me from killing myself when I was 15 because I found peace in it. And even still I'll go skate if I feel like it, it just has a tinge of melancholy once you're past the point of it being a potential dream fulfiller

Pain. That's the reason any skater stops pushing their skating. Doesn't mean they actually quit skating altogether, they just stop trying to learn new tricks or even maintain those tricks they know. Me, for instance, I skate for transport and carve a lot. I haven't really even tried to olley in years and years.

I was gonna say, as someone who honestly can't remember how many times I've fractured wrists, and fallen on my ass - yeah, ouch. I feel your pain.
    I'm 58.

I will never stop skating. I started surfing at age 26, started surfing at 27 so I could do something when the waves are flat. I am 45 and it seems like skating gets better every year. Of course, I just roll around bowls, but I’m skating. I can’t imagine slamming, I skate way inside my limits. High five to all skaters out there, no matter your age. This sport is so awesome and so consequential at the same time.

I agree..I quit skateboarding because I need my wrists and arms to put food on the table for my family…after a couple of broken arms ,ankles and my wrists x4..I had to give it up..my passion led me to disaster…I luv to skate..I still roll around the bowls like an old guy .. and watch all the kids rip..I come from the culture of skateboarding.. and I always will ..

When I was 13 I was at the skatepark, I had already been there for 4 hours, the sun was setting, I was tired, but I was determined
I had my front foot on the nose by accident and took my back foot off to push and fell, I fell sideways and I couldn’t walk for the rest of the night but the next day I went back and skated again

Skate boarding is a lifestyle and a skill to achieve. I'm 48 and grew up in the 80s / 90s and owned a sweet deep pink Powel Perelta board. It was a gift from my uncle or I would have chosen a different color lol! But it was still sick and different. Why have kids or teenagers stopped skating? Computers handheld devices and it's made them lazy. We didn't have that in the 80s we played outside from morning till night.

I restarted in my early 30's before the whole old man skateboarding phenom really exploded and before I even saw and met others my age and older. Through the years the main issue I noted IS old guys still approaching it as if they were 20+ years younger. Especially as I see in the FB groups, rushing back into it without preparing the body, IE: Physical training, having pizza and beer to recover, thus ignoring nutrition, not knowing a damn thing about electrolytes, ya need to relearn to fall if you've been away for years, and pad up! Its not about fashion! and and and, the list goes on. I Quit because I had to take care of family first but preparing for the day I can skate again. Then I can compare my 50yo progress to my 30yo progress.

I miss Skating the most. Just riding around and doing small Olly’s makes me the happiest man alive. I stopped because I had to pretty much do two jobs. 1 part time job and internship and 1 day of school. Just 6 days of straight grinding. That together with the bad weather during the fall/winter here in the Netherlands. I miss it alot.

I skated for over 10 years - broke a lot of bones, had a lot of pain, destroyed my back, lost my teeth - but I always had fun. Unfortunately, at some point you grow up, have to work, take care of your family and your household - finding time to meet up with friends on your own becomes increasingly difficult.
Would I like to continue skating? Yes, definitely. Can I afford it (time, injuries etc.)? No. Even in Europe, if I'm injured too often I'll lose my job sooner or later.

Used to skate a lot with my brothers in our late teens and early twenties we wasn't anything great but just loved to skate around. As we got older the falls and injury started to take a tolls on us and causing us to miss work and basically we skated less and less until the point we didn't skate anymore and just sold most of our gear.

Skateboarding for me, since the late 70's has meant cruising, kick turns and carving and very little more. Always loved reading about bowl riding, freestyle and serious downhill and such but never managed to pull off anything beyond a 360 or two. Friend built a serious quarter pipe with a run in, but I was always shy of reaching the coping and eventually broke a finger. Couldn't ollie to save my life, but still get excited when I see some freshly paved hill and turns. People need to get over the modern street-chic fashion and start wearing some serious pads again.

I'm 40 years old. Skated almost everyday from 15 until 18. Since them i skate occasionally. Sometimes i became away from skate for a year, and there was some years that i skated 1 day a week or 1 day a month. Broke my right wrist at 21, became away from skateboard for 3, maybe 5 years. Came back because i love skateboard, it is a lifestyle and a artform. I'm changing my skate style to a bowl style, and more focused on carving and less and less risky tricks. Skateboard scene needs more people talking about the importance of using Protection Equipment.

I've been skating for 20 plus years and I always take a good month or two off from skating and just visualize the tricks I want to learn and when I get back on the board after a break I skate way better and takes less time to learn new tricks, skating is more mental than physical for me

It's hard to quit something you love and there's not a day that goes by I don't think about skating but at 50 + I'm just too old now I don't have the capabilities of somebody like Tony Alva at his age
