The original was an A. Empire upgraded to an A+. Everything in the sequel took the worlds building ground work of New Hope and elevated every little minute detail and thing from moment to moment storytelling beats to deeper grounded characters who were now fleshed out and given depth becoming arch-types with substance and soul. This movie is straight up pimp juice yo.
Now, finish the trilogy. Do it. Or do not. There is no try.

The "I am your father" line has been ruined by being so ingrained into pop culture that everybody knows it today -- at the time, it was a MAJOR unexpected plot twist that shocked everyone. It also put a really interesting spin on the first movie, changing it from a simple story of good versus evil into something far more nuanced

  • @stonecoldku4161
    @stonecoldku4161 8 месяцев назад +6

The original twist that was in the script was that Obi-Wan killed Luke's father, but that was just to throw the actors off. I believe George Lucas and the film's director met with Mark Hamill in his trailer and told him they were changing the twist to Vader being Luke's father. But also threatened Mark with "We are the only three people who know, so if this leaks, we know it was you."
Then during the first premiere screening when the twist was revealed Harrison Ford turned to Mark and said, "Hey kid you never f**king told me that."

Yes, that was a vision Luke had in the cave.

Hey, let’s not be too judgemental of Lando. If the co leader of the space nazis that blew up a planet as a _demonstration_ comes making demands, are _you_ gonna tell him no?
The Vader twist was kept secret from pretty much everyone. The only ones who knew were George Lucas, James Earl Jones, and the director. They told Mark Hamill right before they filmmed the scene.
For everyone else, the line they thought it was gonna be was “Obi-Wan killed your father.”

Out of the Original Trilogy's "Special Editions," this one is the least controversial, as most of the changes were for continuity, such as changing Boba Fett's VA from Jason Wingreen to Temura Morrison (you'll see why in Episode II), and replacing that half-chimp, half-woman abomination in the 1980 cut with new footage of Sir Ian McDairmond as the Emperor. Other changes include an extended bit with the wampa and turning several walls in Cloud City into windows with some excellent CG renderings of the original matte paintings.

The introduction of Yoda is a love letter to old Samurai stories. The Stranger on the Road was a test of the student as he journeyed to begin training with the master. The master would use the fact the student didn't know his face, to test the student on the way, to see if he had the character necessary to be trusted with the power of the training they would some day have.

    There is no etiquette.
I've seen at least a hundred Star Wars lightsaber battles (11 movies, several TV shows, and nearly a billion animated episodes) and the only etiquette is to do whatever it takes to win.
Vader is testing Luke, like a 9th degree black belt might test a green-belt student.

There was a reason that Han Solo was frozen in Carbonite in this movie. A New Hope was a standalone matinee movie, called Star Wars. Its runaway success opened up the need to turn it into a trilogy. They were planning for TWO movies at once. They wanted all of the main breakout stars from A New Hope, locked in for both movies. Harrison Ford was the only one who wasn't locked in. So they wrote his character into potential alternate roles in Return Of The Jedi, depending on how much shooting time with Harrison they managed to get. He was exploding in fame, as both Han Solo, and Indiana Jones, in MAJOR Box Office franchises.

John Williams wrote so many themes for Star Wars - a lot like the Harry Potter movies he scored. I make mention because even Dak gets his own 'theme'. We hear it briefly when Luke is talking to him as they prepare for takeoff. It has a 'Rebellion' feel but there's something else going on we never hear again. Williams does the same thing when we first meet Professor McGonagall - there is a theme we never hear again as she waits at the top of the steps for the first-years.

Hey, Ylva! This is most people's favorite installment and widely considered to be the best Star Wars film. It certainly is mine. Young people who came of age with the Prequel trilogy often cite Episode III as their favorite. "Empire" has four strikingly distinct environments, an amazing opening battle, the Yoda reveal, the romantic sparring, a deeper explanation of the Force, Lando's treachery and redemption, the presence of fan favorite Boba Fett, the loss of Han, the Vader revelation and the cliffhanger ending. It is a wild escapist ride that packs an emotional wallop!
Mark Hamill had a terrible car accident prior to filming and underwent facial reconstructive surgery. Already a part of the screenplay, the WAMPA attack on Hoth became an in-story way to explain his new look and the make-up department enhanced his barely-visible scars.
Han eviscerating the TAUN TAUN is an authentic form of arctic and/or cold weather survival. He stuffed Luke's hypothermic body in the still-warm carcass of the animal wrapping him in its innards in order to keep him from freezing to death. People have done this to survive. I love it when people freak out watching that scene!
BACTA is the liquid in the healing cylinder. It is a bacterial compound with regenerative properties that is the standard medical treatment for all injuries in the Star Wars galaxy.
Yoda's odd little voice is provided by his puppeteer Frank Oz who voices many Jim Henson Muppets like Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and Animal as well as Sesame Street characters like Cookie Monster, Bert and Grover! Yoda pretended to be a grubby, eccentric hermit simply to get an honest reaction out of Luke that would reveal his character. It's a test like those of the gods in Greek mythology who appear as deformed peasants to see how the hero will behave toward the lowliest person.
The new player Vader was kneeling before is the Emperor! The same actor plays him in all his appearances across the saga.

The MYNOCKS are bat-sized creatures that feed off electrical energy and are starship pests. Sometimes they live symbiotically in the gullets of space leviathans like the EXOGORTH that swallowed the 'Falcon'!
I find it amusing how social norms have changed. I've watched a number of millennials view Star Wars for the first time now on RUclips and quite a few young women are APPALLED by Han Solo's behavior! When these movies came out, Harrison Ford became an instant mega-star and sex symbol because of his devil-may-care swagger and brash forwardness. He subscribed to the "treat a Queen like a whore and a whore like a Queen" school of seduction and WOMEN LOVED HIM FOR IT!!! You can tell he's a softie underneath which is what makes him endearing but it seems young women today find him INSUFFERABLE!!! All boys thought he was the coolest guy ever. It's funny how times change. I'm relieved his charms weren't lost on you! Lol.
Leia was a feminist icon back in the day! An independent woman of means comfortable wielding power, unafraid to get her hands dirty and dedicated to a serious cause! A whole generation of young boys and girls grew up with her as a role model.
Talented screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan was responsible for all the fun romantic banter in this film. As Leia is Alderaanian royalty and Han Solo is a Corellian street kid, it's basically a CLASS ISSUE preventing her from accepting her feelings for Solo. The constant arguing is their foreplay as he wears her down with his roguish charm. Lol.
Harrison Ford's famous "I know." reply to Leia's declaration of love was ad-libbed by Ford who wasn't feeling the more generic "I love you, too." line from the script. Director Irvin Kershner and George Lucas kept it in the movie. It's perfect for the character. I've seen some young female reactors take DEEP OFFENSE! Keep in mind that Solo has been upfront with Leia about his feelings for her for THREE YEARS at this point! She's the one who has been coy with him despite her obvious attraction. Her admission is what HE'S been patiently waiting for and he matter-of-factly tells her he's fully aware of how she feels. It's the answer SHE DESERVES! Lol.
The movies were remastered in the late '90s to promote the upcoming Prequel trilogy with some CGI overlays of the original practical effects but this installment has the fewest egregious changes and looks much like it did in 1980. The Wampa feeding, some aerial shots of Cloud City, a clearer view of the Emperor and some windows cut into corridors Leia, Lando and Chewie are running through at the end which look out onto the Bespin cityscape are the only updates I can think of.
People were SO INVESTED in this franchise back in 1980 that scrutiny during production was INTENSE!! They had the actor in the Vader suit, David Prowse, speak different lines to Luke to conceal the reveal even though Hamill was told what to react to. Dummy scripts were used on set to throw off snoops and spies. James Earl Jones was told the truth just prior to recording the scene. When Jones uttered those immortal words on screen, "No, I am your father.", audiences collectively GASPED, SCREAMED, CRIED, FAINTED and SHOUTED their dismay! It remains one of cinema's MOST ICONIC MOMENTS.

    1. Han to Chewy, "Laugh it ups fuzzball"🤣
    2. The scene in the cave is Luke seeing into his future if he were to turn to the dark side.
    3. Do them in the original release. They were put that way for a reason. Jumping ahead ruins it for you and us.
    4. IRL Ford and Fisher were having an affair. She was only 19 and he was much older and married. She put it in her biography before she died. She got an ok from him to put it in there.
    5. Hans', "I know" was ad lib and required a new script to be written in the next movie.
    6. You will learn more about the emperor and Darth Vader in episodes I, II and III.
    7. The next one wraps everything up and IMVHO is the best of the original VI Lucas

These reactors are certainly consistent and basic with the Lando hate. 🙄. The man is running a city whose economy is manufacturing import and export with thousands of inhabitants. Vader and the Empire show up and these reactors are mad that he didn't fight them with his dozen or so security guards. 🙄🙄. I mean, geezzuss...
The most under appreciated character in all of Star Wars is Lando.

I've always been a fan of the guy in the trenches near the beginning. A decent distance away they see a speeder topple and destroy an At-AT, so he yells at everyone to C'mon - let's go . . . . Where? Out of the safety of the trenches? To do what? Sorry - it always makes me smile.

Even if five days in advance - Happy Birthday … also a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
That was a great reaction! Thank you! … anyway, do not let us wait so long for the next one - “Return Of The Jedi” (that will certainly boost up the subscriptions … here you have mine) where you’ll have my most favorite line of all the movies I ever watched in my entire life … I’ll reveal it after you react to that one too. You’ve just taken your first step into a larger world - WELCOME! You decided to react to a great saga, so great that it earned itself its own worldwide celebration day, which is May 4th, that is May the fourth - like in “may the Force (be with you)”.
“I want to see his face …” - you will … in the next one. … oh … and something else: the line from the original, normal and happy timeline, is “LUKE, I am your father” … maybe you’re already familiar with the Mandela effect …
Looking forward to your next reaction.
    Salutations from Romania …

Lando had to take Vader's deal. He's the leader of Bespin, and responsible for the lives of all of its men women, and children - many or all of whom would be killed by the empire if he refused to let them take one guy and his friends.

I was 13 Years old in 1977 when I saw Star Wars in the Movie Theatre and I was 16 Years old in 1980 when I saw The Empire Strikes Back in the Movie Theatre. Everyone in the Movie Theatre was shocked and gasped when Darth Vader told Luke who he was.
The Scene where Princess Leia told Han that she Loved Him and then Han saying I know was an adlib by Harrison Ford. in filming they had did many takes with Harrison Ford saying he loved her back but it wasn't working. One take Harrison Ford goes I know. He explains to George Lucas that I know would be something Han would say. George Lucas agreed.

Read "Heir to the Empire" trilogy by Timothy Zahn, or better yet, listen to them on audible. A continuation after Return of the Jedi. Same characters, some new ones. I wish Disney would have gone this route instead of what they did in the sequels. I listen to them at least twice a year.
