My dad was in a motorcycle accident when I was 3 turning 4. He was in a coma, had a trach and suffered a TBI. I don't remember anyone explaining anything to me other than he got "hurt". When he finally came out of the coma and had a wheelchair and talked funny because of the TBI and trach-i was TERRIFIED! Honestly I was never able to rebond with him because I was so scared and didn't know what happened.
Kiddos definitely might be scared that their parents are hurt because they rely on their parents for survival. On a subconscious level they know that Mummy/Daddy are hurt, they, as a vulnerable child animal, are screwed.

I was scared of the magic chef logo on my mom’s stove. I thought it was a wasp.
