    Tales of Arise was a lot of fun to play for me because the maps are the perfect size and scope. It’s not an empty open world or narrow corridors.
    The story is a lot darker than I expected too.

      That’s something I quite like about JRPGs, they are not so much about being a huge Elder Scrolls like open-world, they are more narrative-focused and linear, often locking exploration of new areas behind story progression, but they still capture the sense of exploration and of being in a huge world, which makes them less daunting to play.

    Tales of Arise is my 3rd Tales of game and it sits easily as my favorite. The one-two punch of Arise and Scarlet Nexus was exemplary. Both games pros outweighed their cons by a huge margin. This game is stunning to look at and the combat is basically sex once you master it.
    In the absence of FF16 and until Granblue Relink drops, Arise is my favorite recent JRPG (and yes I played SMT V...k, cool, Imma let you finish, but its still Arise by large for me.)

    Considering all the hype around this game, I've seen a fair amount of videos on it by now but you boys still managed to have some fresh view points on it so I must applaud you for that. Also, great editing going on Evan! I see what you did there with that protagonist jumping in one bit of footage and the video cutting to him jumping in different footage. Seamless. 😎👌🏾

      Yeah this, plus they sometimes repeat themselves and some have basically no point (you don't learn anything new, there's no character development and it didn't make you smile or laugh). An editor should definitely have axed a few of them, that would have improved the pacing.

    Speaking about the campfires in RPGs, you could make a second video and include Arise and Xenoblade 3!
    I really liked Arise, and thought it was definitely one of the most fun of the series. In fact, while I’ve played every mothership title released in English to a point, this was only the second game I’ve beaten, with Xillia being the first (I’m working on changing that though)! While Law came the closest, none of the cast really annoyed me and I actually really loved almost everyone. Also, Hootle is the best mascot in the series, and as a bonus he doesn’t talk lol. I loved the battle system, with Rinwell being my favorite to play as, followed by Kisara. The skits are another great highlight, and I’m glad you mentioned them. I thought they looked really weird just seeing them on RUclips, but once I saw them in person while actually playing the game, they somehow looked MUCH better, and I really like the new style. One thing a lot of people have complained about is how enemies no longer drop gald, but I never really had an issue with that at all. I didn’t feel like I needed all that much money during the game, and when I did, I could just sell materials and fish and junk to get whatever I needed.
    (Minor Spoilers) While I liked the ending itself, my biggest complaint with the game are some of the story events leading up to it. I didn’t like the sudden shift to hard sci-fi, which felt really out of place compared to the rest of the story to that point. It was as if they were trying to copy some of the same feel as the Xenoblade games, but didn’t succeed near as well.
    Beyond that, I loved the game. Great review! Makes me wanna dive back in for another playthrough.

    I played about the first 10 hours of Arise and enjoyed my time with it, but temporarily dropped it to jump into some other titles at the time and I have yet to go back. Just finished Cold Steel II and I’m already 15 or so hours into Cold Steel III now. So it may be awhile, but eventually I’ll work my way back to Arise and commit to finishing it.
    I really really liked Alphen as the protagonist, the supporting cast, the world, graphics, music, and from what story I’d encountered up to that point was hooking me. My biggest hurdle is the combat being so combo focused with HP sponge enemies/bosses - I’ve never been good at combat systems that require some level of mastery over keeping and chaining combos, so it’s slower going for me in a game like Arise. And the shortage of currency and healing items was making it quite the challenge. But I know I can always lower the difficulty if need be as I mostly just play JRPG’s for the stories, characters, and worlds they provide - the combat is always just a side dish (sometimes a delicious one and, sometimes, just meh).

    One complaint I didn't hear that I had, is that the bosses will focus the player's character. It makes it hard to heal, use Rinwell/Dohalim's casting, or just play in general when they're focusing you instead of the characters with the skills that are supposed to make the enemies focus that character.

  • @user__214
    @user__214 Год назад

    I agree with a lot of this! I've had a lot of fun with Arise and will be finishing it probably during the holiday break. One point of praise that I would add is that the character designs and outfits are really good, and I say that as someone who usually doesn't care about that kind of thing!
    The only criticisms I would add/expand on are that a good number of side quests are uninteresting filler, and the endgame *seriously* kills its own momentum by delivering a bunch of new side quests right when it's ramping up to (what should be) the dramatic conclusion.
    So the game has some significant flaws, but I have had a lot of fun with it.
    Lastly, I really loved the beauty of Cyslodia at nighttime! I wish the game had kept the eternal night vibe there; it's just so lovely.

    It was my best rpg of the year, but when I reach the second part dear god it feel so rushed. The game dev didn't seem to know how to end the story. A lot of anticlimatic moment (the identity of the antagonist red girl, Planet Rena, quite boring final boss, etc). It's unfortunate, because the first part of the game was a near perfect for me.

    • @animesoul479
      @animesoul479 2 года назад +3

      That was how my playthrough went. I was invested enough during the first half of the story, but the second half is where it started to lose my interest. It always just felt like there could've been more put in to make it work. Certain aspects of the second half I liked but, as a whole, it all felt off.

    • @fattiger6957
      @fattiger6957 2 года назад +6

      Yeah, the story kinda went off the rails in the 2nd half. I think they were trying to do something like Xenoblade where the goals dramatically shift and you're introduced to bigger and badder threats. But it was a little sloppy. I think there were a few too many plot twists.

    • @ifrit1937
      @ifrit1937 2 года назад +1

      @@fattiger6957 Honestly most Tales games (14/15 out of the 17 main games) go with this sort of half game twist with the story (Berseria, Zestiria, and Phantasia being exceptions and more or less being straightforward with who its villains are from the start, though in Bersy and Phantasia's case they throw in some twists with their motives...in Zesty it's the opposite where the story is bad due to not really giving the main villains any motives/agency throughout the plot for 90% of the game which is why the story's bad from the 10th or so hour in onwards...first 10 hours of the game started strong though....also other issues fuck Zesty over as well of course like how BS RNG based the skill system is, the game's camera due to trying to do fights on the same world field maps instead of separate battle fields (some people complain saying they want fights done on the field but after this I would rather it just do separate battle screens since not only Zestiria but almost all action games out there that do on the map battles get fucked with the cameras due to this), 90% of the characters were bland (especially the villains who lacked motives completely), etc. Only good aspects of Zesitria were the side quest quality in regards to story world/character building (in fact i think the series peaked with the game's side quests so far), the game's music (in particular Go Shiina's tracks), and the addition of upgrading basic spells to intermediate into advanced by holding the arte/button and pressing another at the same time (in Zesty and Bersy all characters could do this, in Arise only Rinwell could...probably another negative imo for Arise as this on Dohalim and Shionne would've opened up a couple more shortcuts for other spells/artes)).
      But ya i went over it in my own long ass comment with 11 main points but imo Arise's story would've been better off going the more straightforward approach with it's villains for the second half more or less being a continuation of the first half but on Rena/Lenegis rather than what they chose to do in the end (i went more into detail in that comment on what went wrong or not but won't here mainly to avoid saying any actual spoilers...i put an outright: i have spoilers in my other comment so i more or less directly reference the issues and how they could've been resolved there).
      *some Spoilers for Vesperia 3rd act, Arise finale, and Symphonia Dawn of a New World below*
      With all that said the 2nd half wasn't done nearly as bad as people claim it was...while it's not the most satisfying reason(s) the game does outright give the motives and a logical step by step process on how events had occurred/why they occurred in Arise while in other games (Zestiria or Vesperia's 3rd half for example) they just more or less throw a nebulous motive/villain at you without any real background given to you (with Vesperia's being really BS imo as you don't really fight the main villain in that game and the final boss was first introduced as an npc...ya Zesty's main villain sucked, hell even Arise's, but they at least were introduced as part of the main story while Vesperia's was introduced in missable npc dialogue and was likely only the main villain because Namco couldn't figure out how to get a fight with the true main villain of the 3rd act to work). Vesperia's true main villain not really tying well into acts 1 and 2 were also my biggest issue with it though and while it has a lot of similarities to Arise's this isone thing Arise did better: actually tying the main final boss (first 2 fights at the end villian and not the very last fight...that fight i don't consider the final boss as you practically can't lose it like Symphonia Dawn of a New World's final fight) have agency in the first half of the game as well as the second half (even though it uses a proxy/Red women in the first half).
      Will also say if Arise paced the last half better and gave a bit more background to the games' first half villains in the second half while having the main boss do a bit more before the finale then even the story we got would've been fairly solid rather than shaky...basically expanding on Rena/Lenegis and adding a bit more fights/dungeons to both would've helped the game's story a lot more, though swapping the final boss in the way i mention in my own topic would've made it much stronger as said type of boss is easier to develop than what we got...even though i didn't really want to wait longer another year or so probably would've helped expand the game's story a bit more tbh and made it a bit stronger/less rushed at the end.

I just beat the game, and I won’t say anything regarding specifics just in case people are still playing it, but that sequel bait though? Had me hyped. Also whatever tales game they make next 2 things I want to see improved, that you could argue are the same, seamless combat in the overworld, and less loading screens and invisible walls in general, how cool would it be to enter a town without loading? Get to explore more of the world that you can only look at from a distance? And enter combat without being teleported. I think you would still have to have your party pop out when combat starts… cause I hate in ff7 remake when everyone is always following you since they can get in the way and I think arise does it better while still keeping the travel chatter.

    I'll also add in since i just got to that part of your video: the reason all mosnters in the game are called Zeugals is because zeugals are normal monsters/everyday animals that the Renans experimented on to turn into bio weapons and all non human enemies are zuegals and no non zuegal monster (guess the explanation they give for them not fighting non zeugal monsters is that Zuegal's took over the wild ecosystem and replaced most if not all of the normal monsters) so i guess there is a plot reason for this....it's almost like how all the monster and some humanoid enemies you fight in Berseria were called Daemons. Not really a big spoiler either since this is more or less told to the player in the game's opening cutscene to provide essential world lore to the game.

      I know Berseria has its fans but personally I was not one of them. One of the only Tales games I dropped about 10-20 hours in. The characters were more annoying to me (this is obviously subjective though) and presentation wise the game feels kinda budgety and cheap. Also wasn’t really crazy about the combat and sometimes the tone of the game just felt weird to me. Tales of Arise on the other hand actually feels like a true next gen game and was a great step in the right direction for the series IMO

    There are a few things about the game that annoy the hell out of me. The healing system being the main thing. Limited inventory on items. And since the boss fights can be pretty tough, I burned through a ton of items every fight. With that system, it pretty much makes it mandatory to fast travel out of dungeons halfway through to stock up again (and/or camp) which is something that I don't like to do.
    That being said, I really enjoyed the combat, characters and general story. Yeah the plot goes off the rails like many jrpgs. But even if you only vaguely understand what's going on, you still want to stick with the characters. It was nice to see Alphen and Shionne get closer as the game went along.
    Even if this year sucked in real life, I started it off playing Trails of Cold Steel IV and ended it with Tales of Arise. So as far as video games go, I'm pretty satisfied.

    Major Spoiler warning for Arise, Vesperia, and maybe 1 or 2 other Tales games, Don't read/press read more if you haven't played at least Arise, Vesperia, Abyss, and Symphonia (some issues i more or less need to outright talk about about specific story points...especially last half story points):
    Finished the game back in October (started doing the post game stuff earlier today...decided to wait to see if any dlc like the SAO one came out that didn't have a BS price like it (i'll likely get SAO when it goes on sale since it's supposed to be a fun fight)) and will say i share some opinions:
    -1st AI like you said was bad. If they made it like past games where you could customize each characters AI and gave more offensive options and have allies keep a set position from enemies (mainly for Rinwell and Shionne and mage Dohalim) than it may have been a bit better.
    -2nd you didn't really go over but the side quests were mostly lackluster due to about 60 of the 70 quests in the game being fetch or hunt quests with only 10 or less being story focused on character building/world lore building...and 3 of those good ones are locked behind post game (the last 3 quests in the game). And even as far as the hunts go only the big superboss ones focused on the summon spirit based zuegals, the deer, and post game bosses were exceptional.
    -3rd as far as story goes first half was solid with only maybe Almedria and Rinwell's storyline being really cringey (mainly due to how Almedria's laugh remineded me too much of female Disney villains, especially the evil queen/princess kind of characters lol). Second half was also mostly good with the exception of the whole forgiveness storyline like you said (hell Kisara said it best with Migel's death imo: she/Dahnans shouldn't forgive the Renans but for the future they have to at least move on to a degree/tolerate them while figuring things out in order to co-exist...the whole use of the forgiveness aspect made it a bit too naive at the end i will agree with that). Will say that Alphen shouldn't have forgiven Vohlran at the end but they still should've had him somehow destroy the Renas Alma anyway for the more 'friendship saves the world' moment since i don't think their original plan with the Renas Alma would've ended in the uniting of the two worlds moment if I'm right. One other more major issue with the 2nd half's story would be that some important background info moments were locked behind optional dialogue/computer monitors...in particular some info about the Soveriegn system and Vohlran's background is locked behind the 4 other monitors that were optional to look at i the lab on Lenegis in the same room witht he giant monitor console...imo each of them should've been mandatory to view.
    -4th also related to the 2nd half of the game, the pacing was a bit iffy from Lenegis onwards...imo 2 to 3 more dungeons should've been put on Lenegis to break up the cutscenes (a lot of players complain about that...i don't mind long cutscenes personally but this is always the thing i see people bitching about on game boards/video comments section about the game).
    -5th Imo I probably would've found it more interesting if the actual Renan Soveriegn from the last Crown contest was the main villain over the Great Spirit (I don't consider Vohlran the final boss as it's practically impossible to lose to him once you get him to half health). Could've went with the plot line that the Renans in the past experimented/used the Great Spirit and cause the Hollowing on Rena themselves well before even Alphen's original time 300 years before the game's start and only the leader and members higher and the Red Women/Helganquill new about the truth and were using the crown context/Spirit Summoning ceremony to steal Dahna's energy to restore Rena (honestly this is what i expected once the Wedge fell onto Dahna). Could even still have this Renan leader, the Great Spirit, and even Vohlran's duel at the end of the game. Would've also expanded on Lenegis making at least 5 sectors related to each of the 5 lords with a mini dungeon in between each sector to spread out the cutscenes...as for Rena could still be a large final dungeon like it was (personally would've changed the layout a bit more though...would also probably add in 2 more post game dungeons on Rena as well that took place on the ruins you see in the middle of the Hallow Sea).
    -6th combat was great, 2nd favorite in the series now after Xillia 2/Hearts R (which i'm just lumping together as outside of each game's specific gimmicks they use the same free chain arte advancement combat system (can use any arte after another regardless of if it's base, intermediate, or advanced unlike past games where you had to go base to int to adv and they both use action points (or something more or less the same as action points) for the normal attack and arte resource on top of TP for artes). will say the only thing i'd change is allowing all characters to both guard and dodge and not just one or the other.
    -7th Music was great, imo one of Sakuraba's better osts...especially if you listen to the track on Youtbe without the battle chatter/sound effects getting in the way
    -8th the characters were all good imo...all could've used just a bit more characterization of course with more humorous skits and the villains could've used maybe another scene or two or more quests on Lenegis and their realms to give more background about them but each were given more than enough for their role imo...granted some people don't like them cause they felt more like some saturday morning kids villain but at the same time the plot of the game and their role didn't really require more than that for Balseph, Ganabelt, and Almedria and Vohlran was given plenty of backstory imo...as for Kelzalik he was a minor protagonist even for the Menancia arc of the story and Dohalim was the main boss of that part of the story imo not the lizard and he was given plenty of characterization due to being a party member. If anything I'd say focusing more on the party's hobbies in skits would've been nice rather than having a few skits more than necessary that focused on either the main story or the state of Dahana/Rena's relationship (slaves and slavers) for about a quarter of the skits.
    -9th wish there was some more in game costumes for everyone else besides Alphen and Shionne...i think the other 4 should've also had at least 1 story change costume like the two of them did...unfortunately after Vesperia added dlc costumes in game costumes have become rarer in Tales (granted this game has the most in a long time, granted only Shionne and Alphen's are unique looking).
    -10th Arise is actually the first time that the main character in a Tales game, Alphen, is both my favorite character to play as in the game and favorite personality/background story wise...usually i prefer characters besides the MC in Tales games.
    -11th lack of puzzles was kinda disappointing (granted some people will consider it a plus lol) but as far as dungeon/field design this is the best the series has been ever since they added in a fully controllable camera. Hope they layouts become more interesting in the future with some puzzles and some towns actually allow you to go into at least 6 or so buildings like older games (though this shift to not allowing you to enter all/most buildings seems to be something a lot of companies have started doing unfortunately). And also tied to this point: the visuals/graphics/art style in this game are, imo, the best in the series at this moment.
    But ya my only real personal complaints that i felt were a big issue were covered in points 1 and 2 while any other complaints were more minor in comparison imo and getting it resolved, especially in the ways i mentioned, only would've made a great game even better.
    Personally i give Arise a 9/10 and ever since i beat it in October it's been in contention with Symphonia as my favorite Tales game and by extension favorite game of all time as Symphonia holds that title as well (Symphonia has best story in the series imo with the combat being good on it's release but is has aged quite a bit, Arise is the 4th or 5th best story in the series imo (Symphonia is 1st followed by Berseria for 2nd, and Abyss 3rd...Xillia is either tied with arise for 4th or 5th...still not sure where i put the two yet) but it has the 2nd best combat in the series as i already mentioned...even if Arise doesn't take either title it's very very close to Symphonia). Also...i think it should be clear but how i rate the game is about 65% focused on how much i like the game and than the other 35% on objective aspects of the game...Arise more or less gets 63%/points from how much i like it and as for objective issues it only loses about 8 or so due to the AI and small bits of story beats it did poorly on as well as the mostly bland side quests (granted...the post game side quests I started are really good so i may have added another point or two in for them)...would still put it at about 88 pints or rounded up to a 9/10 game imo. If the next game can do what Arise did right and fix what Arise did wrong...it'd easily be the best Tales game imo if i like the story and characters.

    I just finished playing this game. I hate the endless talking over each other during the battles and the fact they repeat themselves over and over. The voice acting is poor, with some scenes showing characters mouths moving but nothing is said. The game should be fully voiced, the music is boring, not one track stayed with me. The graphics are PS4 quality not PS5. The skits drive me up the wall, I rarely skip anything in a game but I dislike the skits and the characters so much that I started skipping them all after just a few hours of play. The DLC crap pissed me off and what I hate most of all is that the game does not show your appearance change when you equip new armour unless you have the costume and not all armour has a costume for it. This is very lazy and finding owls to try and get a few crappy costume colors is not enough. They cut corners and it spoilt the game. I finished it because I paid for it but to be honest this game is mediocre at best and certainly not the RPG game of the year that the game awards crowned it. Thanks for your review and great video.

    I loved Tales of Arise as I was playing it, but it's the kind of game that faded from my mind once I finished it. 3-4 months later, and I can barely tell you the names of any of the villains or locations. I also feel like it fell apart in the second part of the game. It seemed as though they didn't quite know what to do with the plot, so they artificially lengthened it by splitting up your party over and over, or trapped you in an area where you couldn't fight or explore, or sent you off on fetch quests just for the sake of adding another 10+ hours onto the total playtime of the game.
    That said, I will agree that I did enjoy it more than Zestiria and Berseria, and I'm interested to see how this game influences future entries in the series.

    I’m conflicted on this game cuz it nails certain things for me but not others. Like it’s technically the most polished plot/narrative the series has put out in a while but I feel like it comes at the expense of character and charm for me. I just cant vibe with this cast as much as previous entries. They’re great, and the skits are less intrusive than Berserias skits, but they also have less “hang out-itude.” Everything exists for the plot and exposition it seems like. My favorite skits are the ones where characters just talk about their favorite food and stuff, and I just felt like those moments got drowned out by all the Renan Dahnan talk. I’m also really missing the world maps too. I’m not a fan of picking locations from a fast travel menu instead of a world map. It feels like to make up for the lack of world map they have to over exposit information about the world and that could be where the problem comes from for me. I guess its like, with as many entries as there are, the plots can only take you so far and the entry starts live or die on character and charm alone, and this one just didn’t hit it for me.

    Arise is a mixed bag for me. I enjoyed the combat, the visuals were amazing, the dungeons are _finally_ more than just long identical hallways, and the party members were all well-written and had good chemistry with each other. Sadly the story is arguably the worst in the series, not at all helped by the forgettable NPCs and outright terrible villains. It also had some of the worst pacing in RPG I've ever played, basically saving 90% of the lore and revelations for the last 10% of the game, making the final part a giant exposition dump.

    In my honest opinion, I never truly got intrigued by the combat system of this game. Don’t get me wrong, it was absolutely fantastic. This is solid combat at its finest. My issue with it is that the game just didn’t feel like a Tales game.
    I liked how the franchise would often try to innovate and do something different with its combat that made it stand out from other action JRPGs. Like how many early games felt like a fighting game with the button inputs and directional movement of your analog stick.
    It felt focused and unique. I also loved the many innovations that would be seen later down the line. Like how in Berseria you could create your own combo chains and make some really awesome custom move sets.
    Arise’s combat is good, it’s a system often used by many great action RPGs. I like the unique skills and mechanics of each character. But for a Tales game, it felt like they were just adopting what everyone else was doing. A standard light and heavy attack gameplay with skills tied to buttons and such.
    And as another personal note I’m not a fan of the way the game looks. To me the focus on realistic graphics never really mattered much to me. Like it looks nice, but it just doesn’t work. I like more stylized graphics because the creative freedom and how it can really make a game feel distinctive. Plus I always thought anime characters in realistic environments just looked so jarring to me.
    Regardless, the game isn’t horrible, it’s a good game nonetheless, one I do need to finish. As an action JRPG, it’s great. As a TALES game? I feel like it’s diverged far from the path that its predecessors followed. It just doesn’t FEEL like a Tales game if that makes any sense.

    I personally found Arise lackluster compared to Symphonia, Vesperia and Berseria. I think it's beating Legendia and DotNW. The graphics, skits and voice acting were good. But the combat felt too easy and it looked like just a bunch of flashing lights and explosions. I enjoyed the characters, though I think Rinwell wasn't done justice, but I didn't love them all like I did with Symphonia and Berseria. I didn't love any of them... I just liked them. And the story was quite weak compared to what I've been spoiled on. I didn't get absorbed into the world to where I forgot it was already midnight or pause the game to ponder what could happen next or philosophical implications. It was good, but it felt half-assed compared to what I've seen Tales do previously.
