  • Few JRPGs from back in the 90's seem to resonate with as many fans as The Legend of Dragoon does these days. Especially ones that aren't Final Fantasy. In this week's video we take a look back at this PlayStation classic and discuss what it is about this game that makes it so damn memorable. Just how well does it hold up all these years later? 21 years after its North American release to be exact. Find out in our retrospective over 'The Legend of Dragoon'

When I was younger my little brother would sit and watch me play Final Fantasy 7; we both knew that game inside and out from this stereotypical brotherly exchange of, "I play and you watch." He was never into actually playing JRPGs. Whenever our parent's got us Legend of Dragoon, due to my young mind's fascination of dragons, it was actually my little brother who first picked up and played it and boy did he LOVE it. To this day, over 20 years later, it's still the only JRPG title he's ever played and it resonates with him very much. Honestly, I'd bet dime to dollar, if they did an HD Remake of sorts, he'd sit down and play it through and through again. :)
It really was, and still is, an awesome game.

My favourite RPG for 20 years now. I get why some people don't like additions, but they really cemented a love in me for turn based combat with real time elements.
Alberts additions used to throw me off due to their speed, but nobodies were harder for me to grasp than Merus. The intervals between her hits vary so wildly I could hardly ever get the rhythm right.
I still youtube the games main theme "If you still believe" every now and then. This game will always have a special place in my heart.

I can see why it’s your favorite, there’s so much to love about it. I’m sure you also played it during a pretty memorable part of your life which makes it all the better. Oddly enough, Meru’s additions were pretty easy for me. It was mainly Albert’s and even some of Dart’s that would kick my ass lol. I always find it interesting how personal experiences vary so much with what characters and additions people tend to have the most trouble with.
Replaying it recently definitely helped me remember how amazing the OST is, I don’t think I gave it enough credit back in the day. There’s numerous tracks I can see myself coming back to play for background music when working and whatnot

I do agree. Turn based + real time elements = my sweet spot. A little stressful, but still relaxed enough to enjoy the decision making and the combat animations. Shadow Hearts series had it. Lost Odyssey, too. FF ATB games. What else do we have ?

Man the PS1 really was an achievement of peak rpgs where tech and modern innovations never restricted our sence of scope and scale like games today. When you played a game on the PS1 and experienced the story, it was within a large space, with large consequences and ramifications that circumvented the entire globe. Games now a days are like peacemeal in comparison to the epics you see on PS1. I much prefer games of these era's where they represented abstractions in world design and zones over seamless traversal. Abstractions really help to sell the illusion of size in a games world.

@@OrphanCrippler1 Lost Oddysey was paticular interesting because it was trying to break new grounds well still retaining that sort of conventional rpg format with over worlds and everything, trying to utlize advanced tech at the time, but alas to bad jrpgs went backwards after that. If you look at Lost oddysey though you can see how it was trying to innovate the genre and keep the scope and over worlds alive. in fact I would go as far as to say that game has the best graphical over world in the medium other then FF XV when it introduced the flying car.

Yeah its to bad games are trying to be more like film and movies now. But you know on the bright side of things, video games are very diverse and so there are distinct styles and approach to design that creators still adhere to. I mean hell just in the last several years we got alot of pixel reboot projects similar to the 16 bit era like Octapath traverler and alot of games seem to be following that design principle and we got games like Dragon Quest XI, so its not ALL BAD!! But i do fear for the future of gaming.

LOD is still to this day one of my favorite JRPG's. The world building of Endness is so rich and engaging. It's practically begging for a sequel or prequel because there's so much you could do to continue the story. More than any other IP I hope legend of Dragoon gets the much deserved sequel, prequel, remake whatever it so greatly deserves. Also the music is 10/10.

I picked this up randomly back in the 90s, I saw no promotions or advertisements. When I picked it up and could not put it down except for bathroom breaks and food. I played 30 hours nonstop until it was over. There wasn't many good voice acting games yet and found the voices unique and charming, though I did notice sometimes it was jarring bad. The game was filled with emotion and the music moved me. The world building was mysterious and exciting.
At the time there were few battle systems that were unique; Stat Ocean, Grandia, Legend of Legacy, and LoD stood out among them. I loves additions because I could see myself get better at them and it felt so rewarding.
At the time overworld maps were beginning to become stale, i was fantasizing about things that are similar to open world style and when I played LoD, I loved it's instancwd fields.
One of my favorite RPGs of all time.

I love The Legend of Dragoon to no end but certainly have a lot of issues with it nonetheless. Most of the voice acting range from decent to god-awful (the best being to my surprise, actor *Tony Todd* best known for playing the villain "Candyman" and being in the "Final Destination" movies), the English translation from the original Japanese is mediocre to utter shit, quite a few spelling errors and odd wording throughout the game, and a LOT of plot holes, inconsistencies, and other story points that is either not elaborated upon or brought up if you really think about it. If Sony ever does something again with the game to say, hop on the Final Fantasy VII Remake bandwagon, I hope it's a Remake and/or a Prequel set before & during the Dragon Campaign. The Legend of Dragoon is truly ripe with potential to be explored more. Over 11,000 years worth throughout the world of Endiness and perhaps beyond if done well. I love all the characters but like you say, better writing and more in-depth exploration would be fantastic.
Zieg, Rose, Shirley, Damia, and the other former Dragoons are there to work with and be great for fans to learn more about them. Hell, who's to say there were not Dragoons before some of them that may have perished during the Dragon Campaign? Sure, we saw how Rose got her Dragoon Spirit by her and Zieg slaying the original Dark Dragon, but what about the latter's case? Maybe Zieg Feld hand a mentor, close friend, or even sibling that originally had the Spirit of the Red-Eyed Dragon and Zieg inherited it from him/her? Kanzas only joined the Dragoons so he'd have an excuse to kill, so maybe he murdered the original wielder of the Violet Dragon and took it for himself? Like, the Violet Dragon Spirit preferring the ruthlessness or something of the sort in others (which would explain why it also attached to Emperor Doel)? Lastly, the Dragoon Spirits of the Blue Sea, Violet, Golden, and Jade Dragons remain unaccounted for those 11,000 years after the Dragon Campaign ended and it's never explain how they got to their current locations/wielders during the main story.
The closest we get is that it's implied Kongol's older brother *Indora* may have wielded the Golden Dragoon Spirit. As on the Moon That Never Sets/body of the God of Destruction (a place that blends, warps, and mimics memories, reality, time, and other crazy things) Indora will give it to Kongol if the player didn't buy it from the merchant in Lohan. For what purpose did Indora have it? Did the Golden Dragon recognize and activate for him? What even happened to Kongol's brother during his childhood? How did it get from Kadessa (where the final battle of the Dragon Campaign took place and where its original wielder *Belzac* died) end up in the Home of the Gigantos, then later to Lohan in that merchant's hands? In the latter's case, the only thing that makes sense is that the thieves that Doel was chasing out of the Gigantos' lands stole it (presumably they were also killing the giants and after Indora died to them or via some other means) and sold it off to the highest bidder in any town they could.
Like you say, this game is utterly beautiful to look at and very atmospheric, full of life and personality. And good lord, I love the games awesome music. But I think what I like most with the game's overarching story is the build-up and payoff with the game's lore. They elaborate so much on the whole myth about the Moon Child, the Moon That Never Sets, the Black Monster (though as a little kid, I didn't realize how painfully obvious it was implied to be...), so on but at the end of *Disc 3* however, the plot twist hits you like a ton of damn bricks when the truth is finally revealed and everything you thought you knew is flipped right on it's head; surprising both the characters AND the player. 🥰🥰

    @456704 2 года назад +2

Okay so I have some points:
    1. More an opinion: the length of the battles is why the music and the addition's are so memorable. Almost 20 years after playing and beating the game, I remember all the character names, almost all the skills, and music.
    2. Point of info: Dragoon form can be shortened if you dont' wanna see the animation, you review makes it sound like the transformation is mandatory
    3. Point of info: There's an item you can get so that you don't have to input the squares for the additions, so I think that should solve the issue for people who have difficulty with input sequences

The additions system is super good, it's more like a rhythm game, you only need to remember the beat, just like fighting games (especially older Tekken and the infamous 10-hit combo). Once you do so, you can even do it by not even looking at the screen past the first hit. I remember my main party's addition rhythm like 15+ years after I last played, which is saying something.

Thank you for this video. The biggest reason why it's my favorite game of all time is probably due to it being my first JRPG game but looking back to it recently, it's really the lore that keeps haunting me about it. The lore is just so epic especially with how they pace it out in the game where u start in this civil war region and spans to be a story that started 11 thousand years ago or some shit. What I would do to have it be revived and explored more. It sorta combines western rpg aesthetics wtih jrpgs

After the first time you watch the transformation, it just flashes you with a light and you're a dragoon. The only time you would watch a transformation after that is when you do a special, which is changing all three of your dragoons at once.

That's mainly what I was complaining about so I should have clarified that more. Transformations aren't that bad since they only need to be triggered sporadically but once you're in dragoon form and if you're using magic every turn, all those long animations really start adding up. Thanks! Yeah I feel you there, the dragoon magic and transformations hyped me up as a kid too but it just starts dragging as an adult after you've already seen them. I would have the same gripe about the summons from the playstation FF games, they all need a skip option lol

I played this one when I was a kid but didn't get to finish it around 2012. Combat, music, and the pre-rendered backgrounds make this game memorable for me. Story.. not so much. I think I had problems with the game feeling like it crammed so much story and lore (including each individual party member's iirc) starting mid/end of disc 3.
As for problematic additions, I always had problems with Dart's Moon Strike and Rose's Demon Dance (I don't know why you get counters on those 2 quick strikes.. like cmon man). Everything else I was pretty okay with.

I have the same exact relation with the game as you :(. I even had a friend tell me, that game is so amazing, i even cried at the end, wich made me wanna finish it so much more.. Here we are 20 ish years later... I gave it another go a couple months ago and didnt get too far until I switched to my 20th playthrough of Suikoden 1 and now that I'm finished, Street Fighter 2010 :/. Thats on android, bedroom game is Suikoden 5, wich is my second playthrough. First time I played was ironically around 2010 and rushed it since I borrowed from a friend and my daughter was a toddler so couldn't rly enjoy a console game ( loved ds back then 😅 ). I'm clearly gonna enjoy this time around.

Nah, no way IX is better than LoD. You might like some of the mechanics and quality of life stuff. But people who play LoD and beat it. That becomes a part of their soul. There’s a reason why it lingers with so many people despite lacking future support. FFIX never had the same impact. Is LoD better than the best ff? Probably not. But it’s better than most of them, and the impact it creates on people and leaves I think is more profound. I rather one great cultural marquee game then a technically brilliant but generally forgettable one

  • @AnimeSquirrel

My team is usually Dart ofc and Rose and either Meru or Albert. I had the hardest time master Albert's additions. I eventually 99/80'ed every addition with Rose having someone of my favorites. Merus additions are alot of fun but can be tricky. Kangol feels almost like an afterthought but the bow users feel almost entirely forgotten about.
The music is top shelf for sure.
Also, f@ck the Divine Dragon fight.

i replayed this in 2021... the story did not hold up. its way worse than i remembered. the amount of times all the characters gathered in a small room, acted like things were hopeless taking turns ONE AFTER ANOTHER saying negative things only to in seconds QUEUE THE UPBEAT MUSIC start for some reason getting a burst of positivity- taking turns saying positive things one after another is astounding. who wrote this dialog. i believe there was even a part that ended with *we will do what we can do* which is the laziest writing i have ever seen. leveling additions can get boring and tedious, fights feel like a chore and largely unsatisfying, transformations got a bit useless and the characters were so so uninteresting. at the end of the game i felt like i still didnt know anything about the characters i beat the game with at all. compared to another game i played again legend of legaia, which held up extremely well, i feel like this one was better off NOT replaying so it would have remained a pleasant memory.

Honestly my favorite JRPG of all time, yes it has flaws but all games in the 90s-early 2000s did. I think a remake is justified. It just needs some quality of life improvements and this game would be a masterpiece even by todays standard.

You talked about the cadence of the button presses tot he additions. Actually, each addition has its own rhythm to it. Yes, they all differ. But each one is like a dance that you can preform, with each encounter.
I really enjoyed it. The tougher ones forced me, even as a teen, to practice them and make them a part of my arsenal. Though I did beat the game, I wished I could have gotten all of the Dragons. I did get each Dragoon, but not the final dragons for each character.
Maybe some day, I can revisit it. But great breakdown on this game. Thank you.

Also for the dragoon transformation you can set it to short morph in the menu they just light up with their respective color and it take 5 seconds

You earned a subscriber. Probably an unpopular opinion, addition is the reason why I mostly use Shana/Miranda. She doesn't have an addition but she is too OP. Just use magic items with her and the battle is over quickly. Plus, you get to manage your inventory in that way. Plus, her White Silver Dragon is incredibly strong. Like broken strong.

    • @GamingBroductions
      @GamingBroductions  3 года назад +2

Thanks for subscribing first of all! Your opinion may be unpopular but gameplay wise it is the most efficient. Until I started watching speedruns of this game where everyone just spams Shana/Miranda magic, I didn't realize how OP she could be. Funnily enough, her lack of additions is what always made me never wanna use her as a kid and on this most recent playthrough, but if I were to play through the game again, that same thing would probably be the reason why I would use her lol.
