13:27 on the Backyard Games Wiki, it points out that Marky's crush on BJ actually impacts their stats. When they're on the same team, Marky gets souped-up, probably to impress her, but BJ's stats massively tank because she's not having any of it. 😂 I'd say those insane stats on Marky are a plus, but (I haven't finished watching your season yet) BJ might be your biggest griefer on the batting line-up. EDIT: I see you noticed BJ's deficit at 16:33
Coach Styles taking the reigns of a new after a teacher's strike returns to the field to lead a backyard baseball team to a playoff series. The Texas Rangers provided license to a local school at a charitable rate to use their logo and jersey scheme as Coach Styles began his new season. *Game 1, Away, Monsters* A tough road ahead was laid out for the Rangers as they played their first game away. Vicki got some offense rolling by hitting a fluke heater up in between Ernie Steel pitching and the catcher; managing to secure an infield double on an error by the Monsters's first baseman. Stephanie Morgan came up next, managing to get in a base hit but Vicki couldn't secure third base and was thrown out on a close tag out. On a double play the Rangers were sent out scoreless to bring up the Monsters's hitting squad for the bottom of the 1st Inning. Strangely the Monster's opened with a bunt which resulted in a one-pitch, one out right away. Amir then struck out three clean fastballs Sarah Maxwell. The follow up though Amir Khan let up a hit on an insane bunt that seemed to defy physics and danced about the field, which resulted in an RBI. Amir Khan managed to secure the last out to make sure no further runs scored. Ernie Steele flexed some fielding skill, pulling a Bartolo Colon bounce off his glove and catch in mid-air to force Pablo Sanchez out. Ernie Steele appeared to let up the pressure, but ultimately on a Randy Johnson swing, got a second out for the top of the 2nd inning. Good fielding centered around Ernie Steele nabbed a third out against Luna forcing more defense form the Rangers. At the bottom of the 3rd inning, Sarah Maxwell managed, by rule, to score a solo home run, extending the lead out to 2 runs; putting the Rangers father on the backfoot. Vicki on the top of the 4th would get a base hit on a short bunt. Further fielding though resulted in no offense being generated from the Rangers. Amir Kahn continued his solid pitching through the bottom of the 4th, doing his part to hold off the Monsters at two runs. When it came time for his at bat, Amir Kahn tried to spark the rally, line-driving a hit between first and second base to the Steele Shed at the back of the field, helping Maria Luna steal 3rd during the top of the 5th inning. Two outs following his at bat though shut down the momentum, sending them to a do or die situations at the bottom of the 5th. Coach Styles pulled Ricky Johnson to pitch as relief, wanting to see if his mean left hook would protect the small deficit and allow the Rangers an opportunity next inning to level the playing field. He managed one strike out, and with the awkward angles batters had to take to swing, Ricky closed the inning letting up no hits in the 5th. By this point Ernie Steel's arm appeared cooked, having thrown for 61 pitches but only 2 strike outs; he couldn't keep his pitches over the plate for the early part of the inning against Vicki Kawaguchi. Steele continued to field well, picking up a solid grounder and throwing Vicki out at first base. On Steele's 70th pitch,he'd be subbed out for Courtney Valentino. The Monsters planned to have her relieve Steele and that their lead would be enough to earn a win given they had held off any Ranger offense despite the lack of strikeouts. Stephanie Morgan managed to get a single, narrowly avoiding the tag at first base. Ivan Rodriguez following up did earn his own base hit, but his weak in-field grounder meant Stephanie couldn't beat the tag at second. Pablo "The Secret Weapon" Sanchez came up huge when the Rangers needed it most, and on a meaty slowball over the plate, he dinged a two run homer, tying the game at the top of the 6th. Ricky Johnson at base yielded a solid base hit, trying to keep the momentum going, but aggressive field running resulted in an out; Ricky having misjudged the fielding at second, when the second baseman fell over, but still had the ball and was in contact with the plate. Pablo Sanchez after his home run came in to relieve Ricky Johnson at pitching. Wanting a quick win,the coach of the Monsters said on any potential error, attempt to steal to set up better scoring opportunities. This new aggressive outlook resulted in an early out, Sarah Maxwell tagged out when she mistook Billy Jean Blackwell's stepping off first base as an error and a chance to steal. Pablo, thanks to his and Billy Jean's fielding would hold off the Monsters, sending the game into extra innings Amir Kahn came for the show again, showing off his dual threat skills, hitting a solid line drive that just barely couldn't clear the Steele Shed, but also was too high for center field to jump up to catch. Bouncing off the shield and in a panic throw, center field tossed it to the second base and almost sent the throw to the stands. Amir sprinted and managed to narrowly beat the tag at second base. Marky DuBois came up big with a line drive to right field, where the Monsters had placed Ernie Steele; not expecting any line drives to him. His cooked arm let the Monsters down, as he could barely summon the strength to throw it to first base, resulting in Amir and Marky running the bases for two scores; putting the Rangers up 4-2. Vicki Kawaguchi would try to continue the tidal wave of offense the Rangers had put up. Vicki moved on to steal 2nd base, and the Monsters would soon replace Courtney with Murray Goldman, hoping to stem the tide. At the bottom of the 7th, Coach Styles kept Pablo in, having faith he could hold off the Monsters and walk away with a win then and there. Pablo struck out the first batter, and Marky DuBois recovered from an error and made a clutch throw to secure a second out at 1st. Next in the line up was the cooked arm of Ernie Steel who popped up an infield fly fielded by Marky DuBois to secure the 1st win of the season in a big comeback; the rangers survived adversity to win 4-2 against the Monsters. *Post-Game* Amir Kahn looks to have serious promise pitching and hitting, showing he has versatility and despite letting up two runs did not get shook and helped his team out with good hitting. Marky DuBois, Pablo Sanchez, and Billy Jean Blackwood are shaping up to be good in fielders and may have great games going forward.
The Monsters are replacing the Oakland A's, the Wombats are Arizona, and the Hornets are Chicago White Sox. 2001 also included stat buffs and debuffs for players based on various criteria. The Webber sisters both get buffs if they're on the same team for example. Marky Dubois gets buffs if he's on the same team as Billie Jean Blackwood (likely cause he has a crush on her,) but Billie Jean's stats tank for the same reason (she hates Marky cause he's a hillbilly.) If I remember right Angela Delvecchio gets buffs if she's on the same team as her brother Tony, but Tony gets buffs if Angela is on the opposing team.
I'm so glad this was explained since I've played this when I was a kid and yet only now do I know the meaning behind a player seemingly getting a buff or debuff.....never understood that
Ah yes, the early 2000s Rangers. Home to of Ivan Rodriguez, Arod and Mark Teixeira. Great to see that the random generator chose my favorite team. Good luck this season!
Backyard Baseball has by far the most replayability points of all the Backyard Sports games. I'm in my 30s, and I'd *love* to play this game.

Playing Amir without pairing him with Achmed is just plain silly. It's like playing Sidney without Ashley.
