The curse of Jyothi Basu's rule for over 3 decades still hangs large in West Bengal. He was the mastermind for the downfall of WB. Till 1965, WB was a role model for economic growth, industrial might and success for the rest of India. Today, it contributes heavily in migrant labour list. That's his legacy.

Calcutta was not only the national capital, but it was said in British empire, a coveted posting on East of Suez Canal was Calcutta, when Hong Kong, Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Taipei, Singapore, Sydney, or Melbourne were mere villages. The last great visionary and builder of institutions of repute was Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. After his departure, the leadership in Bengal became pedestrian and the people got astray due to paucity of able leadership. It still remains so. The proliferation of intellectualism has vastly dwindled.

I didn't understand when he said Indira Gandhi as a capitalist representative. As far as I have heard that Jyoti Basu also came from a Zamindari family of East Bengal. To me Indira Gandhi was much more pro Moscow than them that helped India militarily and diplomatically a great deal in those days against hostile nations.

The curse of Jyothi Basu's rule for over 3 decades still hangs large in West Bengal. He was the mastermind for the downfall of WB. Till 1965, WB was a role model for economic growth, industrial might and success for the rest of India. Today, it contributes heavily in migrant labour list. That's his legacy.

Yes....that was an extended degeneration on all fronts. Only Bengal in India underwent a great period called Bengal Renaissance movement. It happened because of British rule and administration. The great learning and cultural institutions were built between 1850 and 1910 and education and culture flourished. Calcutta was not only the national capital, but it was said in British empire, a coveted posting on East of Suez Canal was Calcutta, when Hong Kong, Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Taipei, Singapore, Sydney, or Melbourne were mere villages. The last great visionary and builder of institutions of repute was Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. After his departure, the leadership in Bengal became pedestrian and the people got astray due to paucity of able leadership. It still remains so. The proliferation of intellectualism has vastly dwindled.

I didn't understand when he said Indira Gandhi as a capitalist representative. As far as I have heard that Jyoti Basu also came from a Zamindari family of East Bengal. To me Indira Gandhi was much more pro Moscow than them that helped India militarily and diplomatically a great deal in those days against hostile nations.
It's bigotry to think every zamindar would be a capitalist by believing in feudalism, labour exploitation, etc. Marx, Engels, Lenin, and even 6/10 members of the party core committee, was from a Zamindar family, whereas congress had 10/10 members from a Zamindar family. It is some of us zamindars who thought what our previous generation has been doing was wrong, and we brought land reforms to change it.
It's not Indira was pro Moscow, USSR looked after India, because Pakistan was with US, and China was still a boy flying and falling at many steps.
I have to agree Indira took few leftist step, and one of them was nationalisation of bank, which is still holding the economy or it would have collapsed in 2008. But Indira took those steps under our pressure. That was politics those days. While congress enjoyed being ministers we were busy getting policies like 300 days work( stopped at 100 days), female parliamentary reservation, right to information, essential food bill passed. That was politics those days.
Politics is a spectrum with Y and X axis, they being economical and social inclination towards left/right. So, to us, they are capitalist, but to BJP, they are left.
I'm glad someone acknowledged Soviet's role towards India.
