    If you're a relatively fit new rider, riding a road bike on the street, you can expect to ride between 15 and 20 MPH. As you develop your muscles and efficiency, you may get an average of between 20 and 25 MPH. If you're riding like a pro, you may be able to maintain an average of 30 MPH over several miles.
    E-bikes rule

      I maintain 25mph over 5 miles on an ordinary mountain bike.
      It's all relative. ;)

    rad bikes actually uses very high quality batteries in their bikes! I have a Rad City, and I'm loving it! they use Panasonic batteries, which are the same kind of batteries used in a Tesla (just on a smaller scale). The battery cells are identical.

    Wow, another great video. I must say the Rad ebike can really go. In my small town with lots of police - city, county, state and sheriffs, I decided I better get a stealth ebike. So I bought a Specialized Turbo Levo. It is solid black and looks like a regular bicycle and makes no noise at all. The other day, I came within 3 feet of 2 county police officers standing on the curb, before they knew I was there. I just pedaled slowly, going 5 mph, and they paid no attention to me. Just what I wanted. My city is only a few miles wide, so the Levo is fine for me and it's a great off-road bike too.

    I have an ebike and I work about seven minutes away by car OR bike lol. I can take all side streets for the most part so I get there in the same amount of time usually, but with less traffic. It's also fun to pull up to my job and ding my bell to let the ladies inside know I'm there but just putting my bike away. :) They are totally cool with me locking it up inside the garage where the shuttle vans are. So the Irvine PD wants to serve and protect you.
    In the near future electric bikes and cars will be the majority of what you see on the road. You can see the same parallels when horses were made obsolete over a century ago. People and animals getting all worked up.
    Until people get educated you can expect this for awhile.

    The problem is 20mph isnt fast enough to ride with road traffic but too fast for a sidewalk. They need to just lift the speed restrictions so u can do 25-30 and ride in the road. Here we dont even have bike lanes so we have no choice. Cops are just pissed bc they cant make money off u writing tickets. Its funny everybody griping get rid of fossil fuels then make so many retrictions on electric and solar noone can realistically use it. Smh. I commute electric too.

      Thanks for reaching out yes I'm doing well thank you. It's an incredible bike but it does behave more like a motorcycle than an e-bike.
      I have a video on torque sensing versus cadence sensing which can describe more of what I'm talking about.
      In fact in some areas they're banning throttle bikes all together. So depending on where you live I do make that a consideration.
      I think I ended up putting over 4,000 mi total.
      Then I gave it to a friend and he reconditioned it and I think it's still going.

  • @daMacroGuy

    Love the video and your insights. I'd like to see how you mounted your camera. I have a GeekPro that can fit onto any GoPro mount, but I just have mine on the handlebars. It does a good job, but I like that fork view you had going.I've been pedaling 8 miles to work for the past 2 years, and it's getting old. Like you, we're a one-car family but some days it's really hard to get psyched up to ride. I'm trying to keep my first ebike purchase around $2k and have put together a pretty short list of the usual commuter suspects, but I just recently started to consider a fat tire bike. How well does your RadRover climb hills? Living in Hawaii, the weather is usually pretty static with just the occasional quick passing rain shower. Can you still ride with your ebike if it rains or is this detrimental to the components? I also love the bike/pedestrian infrastructure you have there in Irvine. Despite our local leaders boasting about the need for energy saving alternatives to our terrible traffic congestion here in Honolulu (yeah, it's really bad), it's open season on bicyclists and pedestrians. Although a few new bike lanes have been added in town (City removed a few metered parking spaces, painted a stripe, and the Mayor held a press conference boasting about it), what lanes exist for people to bike from outside town INTO town are in extremely poor shape (pothole ridden, stripe missing, etc). If that wasn't bad enough, the head of the local Bicycle League doesn't want to share the bike lanes with ebikes. No wonder people continue to sit in traffic in their cars.

    • @smidgelife
      @smidgelife  7 лет назад +1

      For the side-car view I use a handlebar mount and just put it on the fork. I use my wired mic and cover it with a cloth to avoid wind noise. However, now I find it much easier with the 360 cam.
      The RadRover has no issues climbing most hills. It's only really steep hills off-road where you may experience some challenges. However, overall...the Rad does an amazing job. And as to local governments, I could not agree more. May cities have traffic and their lack of knowledge and understanding of the eBike is really tragic.
      I think as they start to understand the benefits of eBike commuting, they should start to allow for more people to use them.
      Thanks for the kind words!
      Cheers, Kobe.

    I'd love to be able to do this, but I don't have a good bike route between my house and my work like you do, and our weather here isn't as consistent as yours. I bet you can commute on this, what, 80% of the time living there? I wouldn't get nearly the same amount of days available.
    I'm still thinking about getting an ebike to get back into riding and consistent exercise. I'd want to do mainly pedal assist... but I figure if I'm going to do X amount of work exercising on a bike anyway, why would I want to go 12 mph when the same amount of work can get me to 20+?
    Thank you for the demo videos, they give a good impression of how your bike works for you and I much appreciate it! I'm actually seriously considering getting your model bike when finances allow next year. :oD

    if your light is broken u may want t check this out. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IX4YKC8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
    i just got it and it's absolutely great, super bright, multiple settings high med low and ultra low, as well as a strobe.
    only 2 issues but not deal breakers especially for price. the light comes with an optional button that you can connect to the light so that you don't have to hit the on and off button on the light itself. example i have mine where the original rad rover light sits but the button is on the handles. however this button connects with a sort of audio jack, but it seems to not work if it slips even slightly. alttile tape could fix this and it may just be an issue with me.
    the second problem is the plastic on the charger brick is very cheap. first day i pulled it off the wall and the plastic holding it together broke. charger still works though, just be sure to grab the brick at the base when pulling out of the wall. otherwise the light it'self is excellent. bight enough so that you probobly won't be using the highest settings becase you'll blind people. (but it's there if u want)

    Question about rules that caught the attention of the traffic police?
    You look like you are in S. California.
    California rules as I understand them for Electric Bicycles:
    "Mopeds and high-speed electric bikes are not like regular bikes. Gas-powered bicycles and type 3 electric bicycles (with top assisted speeds of 28 mph) may not be used on trails or bike paths or lanes unless allowed by local authorities. They may be used in bike lanes or separated bikeways adjacent to the roadway. CVC 21207.5 They require helmets and may not be operated by people under age 16.
    Low-speed electric bicycles are almost like regular bikes. Type 1 and 2 electric bicycles (with top assisted speeds of 20 mph) are allowed wherever regular bikes are allowed unless a sign specifically prohibits electric bicycles."
    So why does pedaling or not matter... isn''t the issue per the law the max speed (on electric)? Why would pedaling prevent police attention vs your total speed?
    Thanks for the video!

    • @smidgelife
      @smidgelife  6 лет назад

      +Ryan Tracy I was pulled over by the police and he said I needed to pedal without electric power if I ride on the trail. The sign says no electric bikes or motorized vehicles.

    This looks like an amazing place to have a RadRover. With the beaches so close, and other recreational opportunities, it's to bad the cop's, with their directed rules, put restrictions on eBikes which meet Federal regulations. 25 mph is nothing for anyone in shape to travel at with just an old 10 speed.

    How often do you have to charge? Most e-bike batteries I've seen recently, lithium-ion say life expectancy is 500 to 1,000 charge cycles. I just built a converted e-bike and use it for commuting some days, road bike other days, and charge it 3 to 4 times a week. That should potentially work out to 2 to 4 years life if I treat it right. I try to charge to 80% usually, 100% once a month for cell balancing, using a Luna Cycle Smart Charger, which gives a choice of charge current from 1 to 5 amps, and charging to 80, 90 or 100%.

    • @smidgelife
      @smidgelife  4 года назад

      That is a common misconception on electric bikes. If you have a torque sensing bike like juiced bikes, you actually get a lot of exercise. You just have the added benefit of going further and faster.
      The key is a torque sensing ebike.
