I am a boomer (okay, me!) who is completely mystified by what has happened to our generation. We were the hippies, the rebellious teens who protested the Vietnam War and pointed out the hypocrisy of our elders. Now it's hard to find someone who will admit to ever having held those views. I am proud of the fact that I have maintained my basic idealism over the years, and my healthy disdain for those who have succumbed to the greed and cynicism that seems so rampant these days. People in some quarters have completely lost any capacity to recognize irony when they rant about ideals they once held themselves.
Millennial here and an avid historian buff of American's cold war era. What you said here has always been my biggest disappointment in the boomers. I just wanted to say I'm very happy to see some of you are still around.
Another millenial who's also a history nerd- and I'm also aghast that the generation who had created the 60s counter-culture, supported the civil rights movement, and burned bras and draft cards has come to this. But glad that not all of you have lost your roots!
Gen Z kid here, and I'm sorry it came to that. However, you'll be happy to know that the new generations are keeping your generation's former visions alive.
@@wildcatste Most of the people you're talking about are already in their 70s or older. The younger cohort of boomers missed out on most of that idealistic era and came of age in the more cynical post-Watergate 1970s and "greed is good" early 80s. Edit: wrote this before the video covered some of the same points.
after spending years imbedding it in our heads to never fully trust anything or anyone that tries to contact you online, especially having been a kid in the 2000's when people still had those bulky head monitor computers until 2009.
The crazy part about this is that for many boomers, Facebook IS the internet. They literally do not consume any online content other that zuckerburg sludge
Do you think seeking a variety of sources helps any? RUclips's algorithm is problematic as well, everyone talks about how awful Reddit is, I'm actually grateful to be banned from Twitter.
@@dianamiller3307 I think Reddit is a bit better because it's made up of small communities. Makes it easier to moderate because you can shut down individual subreddits. But yeah, it's the sad truth of internet public squares, especially managed by corporations for profit.
@@arosenthal3318 nah I think my english is perfectly fine thanks. In context it makes sense unless someone is trying to be a pedantic jackass. I'm very familiar with scholarly sources. Note the adjective there
In my country it didn't become popular until 09-10, because we already had a popular social medium with similar functionality (and more customization, similar to myspace). Facebook only became popular when Boomers started catching on to that other social media platform.
@@la_sn3ak3r19 People are backwards these days dude. Saying things like "I want to redistribute wealth, land and power along race, class and gender lines" is somehow considered a sane and centrist view point while "I think people should keep more of their own money" is dismissed as, and I quote: "A thinly veiled argument for the total control of society by Facist, patriarchal, capitalists!" I am not lying. I have had WAY too many conversations with people who think like this.
@@themaverick6269 yeah, but that's not the type of rhetoric coming from Ben Shapiro or Tucker Carlson. Those positions are from the Left that have been normalized by the Democratic Party. Yet, Salari is saying Conservatives are "radicalising" people? Conservatives are the ones pushing back against the Left's legit racist and extremely radical ideas. Defunding/Abolishing police and open borders are some others. Mark Zuckerburg understands this which is why he is friends with Ben Shapiro and allows his content on his website to push back against the Left's ideas who, again, have been normalized and mainstreamed as "centrist" ideas when they are not.
If you think Democrats are communists and not corporatist centrists, you are so laughably incapable of properly assessing political positions that nobody should take you seriously about anything.
@@MilkmanOfTheApocalypse Accept no one said that. That, my friend, is a straw man and you wont catch me defending it. Sure, I think Democrats pander to Communists to get votes but they usually fall back to just more Big Government policies that strangle market competition and gibs. Note how they never actually apply the anti-trust laws we already have despite bitching and complaining about "Big Corporations oppressing the little guy." However, I would prefer the do nothing's of the Republican party over panderers. At least I know we can hold off on the erosion of Western Culture for a bit longer under them while we figure out how to combat this new breed of corporate race socialism.
I'm a boomer: I was radicalised in the 60s, and have stuck to my ideals ever since. I'm still a Labour Party activist. I marched for Nuclear Disarmament with my mum in '61, and have only stopped demonstrating for good causes since my health forbade it. On the other hand, who knows what I'd be if I'd ever used facebook?
I appreciate your story you have fought a good fight I wish people with your initiative and knowledge could educate us on how to change the world for the better
@@n.m6015 Thanks for your kind opinion. But as for a solution ... demonstration is useful to bring a topic to public attention. But the only real solution I can see is to get money out of politics FIRST, which is a faint and glimmering hope. Still, nil desperandum, and keep on fighting.
My parents seem to use Facebook mostly to stalk their kids. I mean my mom tends to phone me "what is this that you just posted?!" instead of commenting.x) They were also radicals back in the 60's and I appreciate everyone who was.
As a Zoomer aka Gen Z, thank you for doing what you did!! People like you have helped pave the way for my generation to be as politically aware and as vocal as we are! 🖤
facebook is a hellhole these days. my dad posts "funny" jokes that are honestly pretty offensive, then gets really excited when it gets attention. it's strange to see older generations getting sucked into social media dopamine rush just as much as the rest of us. i deleted mine years ago and have no ragrets
@@sweetenlemons8659 so true! I'm never on social media anymore and my mom, now in her 60s, is the one always on her phone at family gatherings, obsessively taking photos to post on Facebook. Luckily she hasn't fallen down the crazy conspiracy rabbit holes some of these boomers have and she's still pretty progressive. But I honestly wouldn't be surprised to find out that she gets a large portion of her news from Facebook. Which is scary on it's own for sure.
Boomers, as a generation, have always used this tactic to suppress younger generations they spent the 90s calling Gen X slackers and pushing the '40 is the new 20' line as a way to refuse to treat Gen Xers as the adults they were.
We *are* a bunch of snowflakes though. We have to tiptoe around each other to not cause offense. "Dude, don't mention cereal, I grew up on the stuff and that's why I'm fat now. It's seriously triggering my eating disorders". It's very tiring to be around people like this, and that's why I don't have a lot of friends anymore. It's much more refreshing to be around my parents friends who just laugh and says "that's life".
I have a theory about why news articles are so obsessed with gen z vs millennials. I think they're trying to divide us and tell us that we are different than one another rather than acc let us work together because there should be more of both generations combined than boomers by now
Then maybe it would be a good idea to not other-ize boomers. I feel like I am in an anti-boomer propaganda echo chamber and this is my first salari video.
64 yr old boomer here. FB made me aware of how most of the people I associated with in real life really think. They have revealed just how stupid, gullible, and disgusting they really are. My social life has gone from a small circle of friends connected by the past, or by mutual interests, to like 3 people two of which live in another state. I can’t even talk to most people over 30 anymore.
I'm so sorry you've gone through this. But you deserve to be around good people who have good hearts, and it's probably better for your mental and physical health to associate with those 3 people than it is for you to try to maintain friendships with toxic people. I wish you nothing but the best in life.
Could you adopt me? I’m tired of my mom tagging me in videos like “you should convert to Christianity because…” and “covid is being spread through 5G!”
I tried, Salari... God, how I tried, but my mental health DEMANDED I stopped trying to make my parents aknowledge anything outside their bubble. And I won't put myself in that situation for my sake again.
Absolutely no one will blame you for leaving things be. The important thing is that you tried. Like I said, that little bit of opposition does stick with people, and can influence future decision making; it may never happen, we can't control how people think of course, but it's always better to try than to have done nothing at all. But if it is something that you feel is taking a toll on your mentally, it's fine to take a step back.
You know what's the scariest part about it is? The fact that you can see the slow downfall like a negative character arc, you were there from the start of the decline and there's nothing you can do about it. I had two former friends one fell into QAnon and another fell into the Hotep/black supremacy ideology, I remember them trying to convince me to watch a bunch of nonsense conspiracy theory videos. I tried to to tell them how sketchy and wrong these ideas are, but like every conspiracy theory once you refute a point they create 20 more questions to overwhelm. I cut my ties with them, when the QAnoner friend said the Christchurch shooting was a hoax and the Hotep friend started spouting some reverse-race realism nonsense.
Whatsapp groups are also hella problematic. At least in African / middle eastern countries. My dad fell victim to religious extremism, and I long gave up on reasoning with him. Mom believes anything she sees online, and we constantly have to remind her that what's on the internet isn't always true. Boomers are naive when it comes to the internet
It’s a problem everywhere whatsapp was used. The Brazilian far-right used hundreds of thousands of spam bots to flood people’s messages and it won them the election.
South East Asian, can confirm. Before 2010, my parents were moderately religious. But since WhatsApp got big around the 2010s so many posts shared around by relatives changed my parents to the religious tyrants they are.
“You’re too young to understand.” Then tell me, when does a person start to understand? How do you get that understanding? Is it actually understanding or just hardened ignorance?
Yeah the baby boomers, handed the best economy in the history of the United States, enjoyed the end of New Deal Era policies strong social safety net, affordable housing.... and then pulled the ladder up behind them so they can have it all to themselfs, and say we're are lazy, entitled and don't understand the world.

Based on statisitcs, work productivity has gone up so even if we are lazy we are also better at our job than boomers ever were, yet we get less money for work that is statistically better. curious
@Mana Montana Dude, production has gone up since 50s. Also, people protested not just those wars but the draft as well. I don't understand your argument with the back breaking labor because trade and construction jobs still exist and are very prominent. But Air-conditioned office jobs were super prominent in the 60s because they've been a thing since the 40s. Fast food also saw a rise in the 60s so people were still making burgers back then. People were also paid more for their work than we are today. Go read a history book, then do some research on how wages have stagnated because they don't adjust for inflation or rate of production.

People's abstract thinking never developed enough to have the kind of empathy you described at the end. Often, with these people, if you ask them to imagine being in the same situation, they will simply come at you with the "I wouldn't be in that situation in the first place" argument.
Admittedly, I am guilty of making that argument during PSHE at school. Specifically when talking about peer pressure - mostly because I was so incredibly socially isolated as an autistic person, but that was largely because I didn't fall for peer pressure from other kids to do silly things and that ticked them off. So when asked, "What about if it was YOUR friends pressuring you?" it really do be like "What friends?" >:,D
I was born right between the boomer and x generations, but always identified with x, as my mother was very boomer. However my ex-wife was a few years older, and addicted to Facebook, which I despised. In 2016 she went full alt-right, to my horror. Before this, we could talk about anything. But suddenly she started rejecting anything I said as if it came from leftist brainwashing. She wouldn't argue or debate - she just ignored everything I said, or claimed I was being intolerant. At one point she even claimed I was "mansplaining" to her - but she knew I was a feminist, and she hated feminism. One time I even saw her send a Paul Joseph Watson video to her son - PJW blamed men's relationship problems on feminists. In the end that's why our marriage ended. I couldn't respect her racism, xenophobia, or conspiracy theories, and her refusal to engage with facts. I kept hoping she would soften up after awhile, but it hasn't happened yet, and now it's too late for us. It makes me sad. I really loved her.

@julius kazanecki Maybe, if you think real hard, you can figure out that if people can make more on unemployment than on minimum wage, maybe employers should increase wages. Those measures were put into place because we're in a global pandemic and people needed to be able to eat while unable to work because their work shut down. They're not permanent. Now many have actually gotten better jobs and simply don't want to go back to shit ones. I personally know like 10 people who got jobs at call centers rather than go back to their restaurant jobs, and people keep complaining that they won't come back to work shit service jobs for shit pay. The 'people are just mooching off unemployment' is a lie fostered by Fox. I am begging y'all to do twenty minutes of independent research. An angry dude yelling on youtube about immigrants isn't a source, incidentally. Also, Joe Biden isn't a socialist. I WISH he was. Gen X’er here. The second “forgotten generation.” We were raised by the Boomers, and lived first hand how psychotic they really are. Most of us have worked hard to rid ourselves of their toxicity. Our children are gen y and gen z. You guys, in my opinion, will be the ones that will be able to go even further, and stop the extended psychopathy.
As a gen Z, even I’m able to see the affect of the boomers [aka my grandparents] and god I feel bad for gen X’ers. Like the amount of patients are guys had to give up, its astonishing.
I feel as if technology has already made gen Z, my generation, fail. We have such programs ranging from TicTok and Instagram (killing attention spans, and collecting/distributing user data (should really read the TOS and PP (oh wait no one does))) to sites like Twitch and whatever the online system of schooling is (removes communication of people by creator not knowing the audience, or complete isolation from a part of the world.) I feel as if we've failed because we can't do anything without wanting a reward (lack of dopamine in Gen Z). If you were to take someone from Gen Z fishing, they'd quickly change their phone, instead of focusing on catching the fish. Even if they did catch a fish, they'd feel a slight sense of dopamine and want it more, faster. I'm probably completely wrong, but I feel as if these are issues that should be a concern.
@@chris.maharaj4054 you just pointed out how each generation has something to overcome. There will always be something. Way of life but you seem very aware and that is great. Everything is really a double edge sword.
@@chris.maharaj4054 it's not really a gen z issue, all humans hunt after those dopamine hits, it's just that gen z has better technology to utilize also, I'm gen z and enjoy fishing quite a bit
There's also a class-dynamic here, as Millenials and Zoomers see eye-to-eye on so many issues because of a shared class interest wherein both generations are overwhelmingly propertyless (both private and personal property) and perpetually just above the poverty line, while specifically white American and European Boomers are overwhelmingly propertied and quite wealthy. Thus Millenials and Zoomers have opposing interests with white Boomers, which is why those two generational groups are particularly poised for conflict.
And boomers also have this sort of arrogance over the newer generations, because they own all these things and they can't seem to understand why we aren't able to do the same, as if the economic situation is exactly the same as it was before. I'm not american but i work a pretty decent job that pays quite well and it's a stable one too, but there's no way in hell i would ever be able to pay for a "nice" house and a car while also building a family and having kids, at least not without miraculously working in the same place for a good 30 years in the future. This is actually one of the reasons why me and my parents don't see eye to eye in this aspect but i'd rather not fight with them over it so i just ignore the tension and enjoy the fact that i don't live in America where the parents kick their children out when they're 18.
I am so happy you are covering this. I had to leave Facebook because of the toxicity, because no matter how much I tried to provide people with the truth --people always found a way to distort it.
It really has become a horrible place to be in. Ppl went from sharing pictures of their pets and family to replicating fakenews ang arguing with their loved ones. Besides it isn't a place for dialogue and collective construction. There is only propaganda and advertisement.
I get what you mean, but I feel like you saying, you're providing people with "the truth" might be a factor why you havn't been successful. I think that's exactly what makes it so difficult to counter right wing arguments, they present a simple truth, when the topic is far more complex. The result is that you have to lay down a complex situation and debunk how they are wrong on many levels and spend the time to maybe research numbers and facts, just for your comment to be ignored, or if they feel caught making a wrong argument, delete their comment and yours with it. So since I don't have time for that, I will only reply "your opinion is clearly sexist" or something amongst those lines, without further explanation. I feel like on facebook the outcome of that is more impact and less work, since they have to figure out themselves why I would write something like that.
I have been struggling with this too. A few on my feed are full blown conspiracy theorists and a few more aren't too far from that. It gets exhausting just trying to pick my battles. One old family friend even unfriended me because of those disagreements (where I was always polite, provided sources, and didn't stoop to name calling or even subtle insults)

Both my parents are so brainwashed by it they fear the fact that I'm trans. It's just a struggle communicating with them. My elder brother also follows the facebook mindset sadly.
Sorry to hear that. Also, stay true to yourself but don't antagonize your parents or brother if you're not yet financially independent yet. Good luck and lots of strength.
My best friend, also trans, took his life in 2016. I began my transition 10 years ago and I've been hospitalized 3 times, twice by police force, for suicidal thinking. I used to have a very naive and patriotic view of this country. Ten years later and I literally could torture these transphobic motherfuckers without feeling a damn thing. They took my best friend from me. I'm never going to forget that, and I'm never going to forgive them for their willful ignorance in the face of such obvious suffering.

This past week our family has been dealing with her and the four scams she’s being taken advantage of, so to see that we aren’t alone helps. Thank you.
Thank you for watching! There definitely needs to be more efforts in educating older generations with the internet. Even classes which help them recognise scams and clickbait would make a lot of headway in helping them identify other dubious parts of the internet. A lot of elderly people are very insecure about taking the most basic of computer/internet course though, so it's unfortunately a hard sell.
My parents are boomers, and they roll their eyes and laugh at me for buying food from the local farmer's market instead of the cheaper things from Costco. And they wonder why I don't trust or respect them.
@@RhianKristen I think that someone laughing at your values and not even attempting to have a discussion on the subject is more than enough to lose respect for them. 38:55 "You're too young to understand" reminds me of a work story-- I'm cashiering and an old white guy comes up right after I rang up a few men who happened to be Mexican. They said goodbye to me, in accented English, and old white guy cynically grumbles "I wonder if any of those guys speak English", immediate red flags, I say "they do, they just were." and he says "yeah but even if they do they don't wanna be speaking English," and i said "uhhhhhhhh" and he said "you're too young to understand what's going on right now" and with that i was like "oooooooooookay you run along now" cause if I had to hear this guy rant about some mythic Mexican invasion he heard about on Facebook I was gonna get myself in trouble.
Really nice video. I was living with my uncle for the past 2 years (I was 18 when I moved in with him and 20 when I moved out) who is a boomer that frequently uses Facebook and he had some insane takes, that were often racist, terrible, and flat out lies. And he would often try to persuade me of his beliefs, I always remained quiet since I knew if I spoke up against him, I would be homeless. We had a bad fight eventually, and I moved states, fortunately I had a place to go. Im 21 now and and still shocked by some of the things he believes. And I know he got a lot of his ideals from Facebook and the way he was raised of course, so this video definitely points out a really big real problem.
I know the feeling, and I'm aware that it wasn't solely facebook to do it (as the church is almost as useful an idiot in my parents case given their propensity to dogwhistle the same bigoted opinions) but I can hardly stand to be around my parents now. If my mom is left to her own devices and scrolls fb on her phone I've heard the most asinine takes but the one to make me cringe hardest has to have been "don't complain about children in the cages at the border if you're not going to complain about children in the dumpster at planned parenthood" ...the brainwashing juice no longer stops for them, they're exposed to it basically every waking hour. I didn't even have to raise issue with them to get kicked out because the church's views were that culty to the point of "if you live under our roof you go to our church" shit.
I'm not American, so I can't relate to the specific cases. However, this does apply to my dad, in a way. I see him scrolling through facebook a lot and he usually tells me political jokes or comments that are very much anti-something all the time. It's such a shame too because he's most of the time in a very negative mood, and I don't think all those political stuff on how we're going worse is going to help him at all
Radicalization through Facebook goes beyond the US. With its increasing global userbase, it's spreading misinformation and not-so-great ideas worldwide.
Same with my dad. My mum's pretty sensible but dad's all about being pro right wing (Indian) . When questioned, he simply points me to the "facts" and totally believes that if it's on internet, must be true.
@@jeseenthaannejoji9582 That's true, though what I mean with my dad is most centered on the politics of my country. With what he knows about the US he hates Trump, for example, so he's not that much influenced by that part, I think. He will, however, be exposed to a lot of negative content, not only about politics but also gender expression. I fear that not only facebook's posts make him be in a constant negative space but also close him more on some of his most conservative views.
@@komal146 oh my God, fellow Indian here too. I hate this fake binary created in India between right and left when most of the people just want the best for India deep down in their hearts regardless of political beliefs/affiliations. But we often get caught up in clashes and name calling that we forget the core issues. Like the farmers protest came about because farmers are the group of people in our country who have been exploited since forever. These farm bills worked towards privatization and lack of legal rights for farmers to seek; this was the last straw. But still remember how we acted as a country, from calling it an 'international conspiracy to negatively portray India' to the apathy of the middle class. We can do better but for that we have to focus on our similarities, not differences. Also, another thing I'd like to add is the people of India really like to pretend like all the religions practiced by Indians are just so opposed in ideals. But if we observe, most of them fundamentally break down into similar societal structures (for eg concerning women rights or the lack thereof, just because the law says we're equal doesn't not mean the history of sexist oppression vanishes into thin air) , I'd argue that be it Christianity, Sikhism, Hinduism, Islam any of they are not pro-autonomy of women or anti-hierarchy. Like all religions boil down to the same things yet we fight like maniacs over it. I'm sorry I'm not insulting people for being religious, I respect it. But fighting over religion negates the whole thing.
I would definitely want a video about female Fox news presenters and how their aesthetic is almost weaponised I would say to spread their misinformation.
@@sad-qy7jz From seeing Fox News, they have a set look that the female anchors must follow, most of them being white, long blonde haired, blue eyed, attractive in a Stepford Wife kind of way. It is widely known that Roger Ailes wouldn't allow the female hosts to wear trousers. There is a narrow aesthetic palette, a uniformity to their styling, clothing which embraces the most conservative notion of femininity and firmly rejects any idea of modernity, let alone feminism. Fox News has a very old viewer demographic and I think the way they dress the female anchors is a way to pander the viewers' conservative views on women and reinforce those right wing values that on the whole makes lives of all women much harder and more unequal.
@@seamstressdragon8707 yes this!! I’ve spent more time than I care to admit being fascinated by the particular look these female Fox News anchors all have in common. Hope this helps someone!
I have to thank you for this one. My mom whom is not quite boomer age but not too far either has been leaning way more right wing since she became more active on Facebook. The biggest issue is that Boomers look at whats on the Internet like a newspaper or book but the Internet has much less restrictions than those mediums when talking about honesty
This entire video can be distilled to the simple fact that boomers speak in dog whistles because they'd get in trouble for saying what they _really_ feel in a public forum.
I'm a 39 years old millennial and I can't talk with my father openly without him to tell me the problem is I'm too young and when I get older I'll get it (?) so I don't talk with my father anymore beyond what's necessary. They spend more time in their media and among boomer friends who only talk about this so I have no chance with them When I see these videos I worry because you are in US and I'm in Argentina and the parties may be different and the TV channels that spread misinformation are other ones, the pattern repeats. The financial and political status of both our countries is different, but still my parents can't understand why my brother and I can't buy our own houses yet and why we don't "work harder" for "a real job". The word "communists" is always there when anyone mentions any basic human right and is not like our History is similar either. Of course, my parents don't know they are copy/pasting American boomers discourse, they don't even speak English but this makes it evident none of this is casual but someone weaponizing our parent's rage on their benefit...
The comment about uncle Gary buying a house by working part time at a Dairy Queen make me laugh because my father is a quintessential boomer and tells me these kinds of stories all the time. He was able to go to college in the 60s and pay for his own apartment by working part time. Part time jobs also paid people health care benefits...which not to mention the health insurance industry in America at that time wasn't the steaming pile of corporate greed it is today so you could actually afford it. My father had his job his entire adult life and retired while I'm working full time as a temp without health benefits and can't even imagine being able to retire.
My mother cannot understand why our current generation and the younger one to come can't and will rarely ever be able to afford buying a "nice" house/car while also building a family and staying debt free, because if she could back then why can't i and the rest of my generation now? There's a huge generational gap and unfortunately she never tried to understand the differences between their situation back then and ours now, actually it's a little depressing to see how many older people in so many countries all have been able to build a stable life while the newer generations are constantly getting the short end of the stick and it's hard to see any hope even if you think about the future in 20 or 30 years.
I love how they view their ability to live life in this way as a form of moral superiority rather than simply a product of the environment/circumstances they were living in at the time. They just refuse to see their circumstances as an advantage rather than something they earned. Gotta love the Just World fallacy.
No wonder boomers are so entitled, they practically grew up in an economic utopia. Did they really make enough money to pay for an apartment, along with healthcare benefits, just for working part time?
I'm always amazed when someone calls Biden "far left", he is the most centrist president ever, he stated that Communism has failed every time it was tried and Socialism is a poor replacement. Not saying he's wrong here, but he is definitely not Left.
I try to curate my mom's newsfeed for her. It's our fault why she got addicted to it in the first place. Her friend's posts are cringey, but what's important is she doesn't feel too alone "with us" anymore. Everyone needs friends outside of family, you can't take that away from anyone. But if you're afraid they'd be easily influenced by bad actors, be the "adult" and help them out before it gets worse.
Zoe Bee's video How to Actually Change People's Minds Conspiracy Theories a Deep Dive is a really great resource on learning ways to effectively communicate with people who have fallen into conspiracy theories and the like. So, if anyone is thinking about actually talking to their relatives I highly recommend it.
so when you say "conspiracy theory". do you mean all conspiracy theories or only the ones that you don't like and enforce the once you believe in? seems to me that term "conspiracy theory" is mostly in the modern era used as a means as pronouncing certain thoughts as blasphemy to ones one ideological orthodoxy rather than any attempt at actually searching for something that has some level of truth to it.
@@mayainverse9429 I'm going to double down the OP's reccomendation. She does acknowledge the broader scope of the words conspiracy theory in the video, and it also touches upon things like not immediately going to an angry place when engaging with other people on the internet.
@@mayainverse9429 Again with the "well you just don't like hearing these ideas" crap. "Ideas" are tolerable until they become intolerant of others' existences (y'know, racism, eugenics, anti-lgbt, etc.) and due to the Tolerance Paradox, we're obliged to to either shut down or argue against intolerant ideas. Many conspiracies have already jumped past being "skeptical" to being bigoted. It also seems way more beneficial to have an educated population mostly based in reality and truth.
Your section about how disadvantaged we are to live happy, successful lives compared to our parents' generation makes me so sad. I really wanted to have kids, but even at $75,000 a year, I don't think I can afford it and it feels kinda fucked up to be bringing kids into a world that is probably going to be ravaged by climate change. My boomer parents can be as incredulous as they want at this, but their generation built this world for mine and that's why they may not get grandkids 🤷
An individual boomer's beliefs aren't the cancer - they're just the metastases. The source of those beliefs is the cancerous growth. Fighting the metastases is always a losing battle if the m main growth isn't cut out.
Isn't it the case that there are always going to be horrible people who think and say horrible things though? The problem is that they now have an incredibly easy way to get their ideas out and spread them to a group of people who have no reason to doubt them since they're being shared by their friends and family. We can't "cut out the cancer" of bad ideas from the internet, but maybe we can make it harder for them to spread.
As someone who sometimes buys, repairs and sells stuff on eBay, the Marketplace is one thing I miss since I quit Facebook at the beginning of the year. Unfortunately, there are no half-measures, if you are on Facebook at all then your privacy is at severe risk. I was thinking recently about if there is a way around this, so I could still use Facebook Marketplace reasonably anonymously without having to use anything else on there. I think if you purchased a pre-loaded mobile SIM with cash and put it into a de-Googled mobile phone (you'd need to install a custom OS such as Lineage OS on it), you could then use that phone number with a dummy email address and a pseudonym to register on Facebook. You would need to make sure that you don't friend anyone on Facebook with that account (much of your privacy is leaked because the algorithms work out your identity by who you associate with) and just use it for the Marketplace only. You should also do that only on a desktop or laptop PC and have a specific browser that you only use for Facebook. You definitely should not use the mobile app on your phone. I think if you did the above, you should be reasonably anonymous - although you may struggle selling items on Facebook Marketplace because people will be suspicious of someone selling from an account with no friends on it. With that said, you get the best selling prices on eBay anyway. Just a few thoughts, I may try it myself. (I do already have a "burner" phone that I have used for other accounts already.)
I wish i had been 20 in the 70s. Im 20 now living in new zealand and if i wanted to buy a family home i would have to put down at least a 60,000 dollar deposit. Its just not feasible now for young people
For a house that would fit my family and me (which needs to be not small and one storey, given that I’m a wheelchair user) where I live in Australia, the deposit is about $100k. Not that I could get a loan even with a 20% deposit- banks don’t lend to people on pensions. And the government decided that pensioners aren’t allowed to save money anyway. I’m good at budgeting and saving, even on my meagre income. I’d be willing to spend the next 20 years saving for a deposit. But if I save more than two months worth of my pension income, my pension is cut off entirely. And given how long it takes to get it back (a lot longer than two months), I’d be homeless, rather than on my way to saving for my own home. It’s mad. I’ll be renting for the rest of my life, and that means living in housing that isn’t perfectly accessible for my disabilities.

Even as a millennial doing relatively well in the current economy, I have a sister who isn’t nearly as lucky. I think one thing that those who criticize millennials may not realize is how demoralizing repeated setbacks are.

Its ironic that boomers themselves where the ones that warned/hated social media.. now my parents are more addicted than me.

Snowflakes, snowflakes everywhere....
they’re the ones always calling teenagers millennials even though millennials are like forty now, and some of them may as well be boomers themselves
do they?
Boomers, as a generation, have always used this tactic to suppress younger generations they spent the 90s calling Gen X slackers and pushing the '40 is the new 20' line as a way to refuse to treat Gen Xers as the adults they were.
We *are* a bunch of snowflakes though.
We have to tiptoe around each other to not cause offense.

It's very tiring to be around people like this, and that's why I don't have a lot of friends anymore. It's much more refreshing to be around my parents friends who just laugh and says "that's life".
I have a theory about why news articles are so obsessed with gen z vs millennials. I think they're trying to divide us and tell us that we are different than one another rather than acc let us work together because there should be more of both generations combined than boomers by now
That could be it!

It really sucks that you had to go through that, but hey, better 3 good friends over 10 bad ones..
I'm sorry, that sucks. I hope you make some new (and sincere) friends!
@@Salari thank you :)
Saaaaame. It's no use. I'm glad we tried at least.
the tactic to dealing with these types of people is to just make shit up, it's unlikely they would even look into it.
Guess who owns WhatsApp?👀
It’s a problem everywhere whatsapp was used. The Brazilian far-right used hundreds of thousands of spam bots to flood people’s messages and it won them the election.
This is also a problem in Latinoamérica. Misinformation is spread in photos, spam messages, and statuses
my cousin is legit becoming a nazi from whatsapp and the like and I'm really scared for her
South East Asian, can confirm. Before 2010, my parents were moderately religious. But since WhatsApp got big around the 2010s so many posts shared around by relatives changed my parents to the religious tyrants they are.
“You’re too young to understand.”
Then tell me, when does a person start to understand? How do you get that understanding? Is it actually understanding or just hardened ignorance?
Yeah the baby boomers, handed the best economy in the history of the United States, enjoyed the end of New Deal Era policies strong social safety net, affordable housing.... and then pulled the ladder up behind them so they can have it all to themselfs, and say we're are lazy, entitled and don't understand the world.

Based on statisitcs, work productivity has gone up so even if we are lazy we are also better at our job than boomers ever were, yet we get less money for work that is statistically better. curious
@Mana Montana
Dude, production has gone up since 50s.

@Weston Meyer and I judge smartness based on how quickly people can pick up on new information. you aren't smart if you read one book 300 times and can recite it word for word, you're dedicated. you're smart if you can understand new concepts. kids are inexperienced and unwise but usually very smart

People's abstract thinking never developed enough to have the kind of empathy you described at the end.
Often, with these people, if you ask them to imagine being in the same situation, they will simply come at you with the "I wouldn't be in that situation in the first place" argument.
Similarly, "I'd know how to avoid it" or "Well, I wouldn't be as dumb as xyz!"

Not only did we live through it, we tried to call them out on their bullshit and were all dismissed as nothing but "cynical slackers"
As a gen Z, even I’m able to see the affect of the boomers [aka my grandparents] and god I feel bad for gen X’ers. Like the amount of patients are guys had to give up, its astonishing.
I feel as if technology has already made gen Z, my generation, fail. I feel as if we've failed because we can't do anything without wanting a reward (lack of dopamine in Gen Z).

That cheesy Ed Sheeran joke came out of nowhere but very welcome - You've earned my engagement, sir
I will now share this on facebook so that all my boomer family can see it.
Thank you for this upload I have not finished the video yet but just know it came at a perfect time. My grandma who helped raise me has slowly over the years strayed further and further from reality.
I mean.... that isn't really a reason not to trust or respect them. I'm sure you have other reasons, but this wasn't a great example of "boomer".
@@RhianKristen I think that someone laughing at your values and not even attempting to have a discussion on the subject is more than enough to lose respect for them. They clearly don't respect me or my values. There's a lot of other reasons too, this is just the most recent one. While I absolutely do not believe that every single person from that generation has this kind of 'cheapest product at all costs' mindset, it's still worrying that there's so many of them who do.

Those are the same Americans who won't learn a foreign language and get upset when visiting a foreign country and the people there can't speak English
@@komal146 Oh gosh, sorry to hear that. That's a dangerous mindset to have, considering anyone can post anything on the internet.
This is definitely my dad. He’s pro-life yet had a fit when I tried to give a homeless man a granola bar 😐 No wonder he’s always on Facebook...

I would definitely want a video about female Fox news presenters and how their aesthetic is almost weaponised I would say to spread their misinformation.
Why women in particular? I’m not saying there couldn’t be something behind it in unfamiliar with, but I don’t understand

I have to thank you for this one. My mom whom is not quite boomer age but not too far either has been leaning way more right wing since she became more active on Facebook. I didn't really realize how bad it had gotten till this pandemic honestly but it's been alarming to say the least. She was always more centered but not so much anymore.
I've been doing my best to try and balance her perspective but it's really not easy. I really appreciate that you've given me the ability to understand why this change in her has occurred and hopefully I'll be more equipped and effective at not letting her get too radicalized. Here's hoping 🤞🏻
You’re situation sounds almost exactly like mine. Mom was centered, then after the pandemic it all went totally out of control.

I'm a 39 years old millennial and I can't talk with my father openly without him to tell me the problem is I'm too young and when I get older I'll get it (?) so I don't talk with my father anymore beyond what's necessary. They spend more time in their media and among boomer friends who only talk about this so I have no chance with them
When I see these videos I worry because you are in US and I'm in Argentina and the parties may be different and the TV channels that spread misinformation are other ones, the pattern repeats. The financial and political status of both our countries is different, but still my parents can't understand why my brother and I can't buy our own houses yet and why we don't "work harder" for "a real job". The word "communists" is always there when anyone mentions any basic human right and is not like our History is similar either.

5:41 normally I hate corporate online engagement, but "sorry you feel this way, Brenda" is objectively hilarious

They do have Facebook marketplace which is their equivalent of eBay
I was just thinking about this, plus you can also buy things from Instagram
omg my stepdad will literally scroll for hours on Marketplace, but complain if I’m simply texting on my phone for 15 minutes.
That’s how I found my first car lol

I don't typically comment...but this video is incredibly well done. Thank you!
It's sadly not just Facebook it's almost all social media and it's sad to be honest
My friends 10+ years ago: Why won't you get on Facebook?

So yeah great video! I'm not smarter than anyone I just had a feeling everyone sharing every aspect of their lives and thoughts on a site with iffy privacy thats gotta make money somehow was a bad idea. Twitter is the same but the character limit and quick dunkability it allows for can be a deterrent to leave thoughts in the drafts.
