    Your video and instructions were very clear and easy to follow. I scaled a bed for my 2 new toy poodle pups today. Your hints were great and I serged the final seam as you suggested. Needless to say, they're chewing it already so I expect I'll be making another one when they're full grown. (They're loving playing in it too) Next one I'll make a liner insert with the stuffing and a zipper on the cushion for easy removal. Thank you.

    Hi there, thank you for this tutorial. I’m just checking - for the rectangular pattern piece that forms the sides of the dog bed that is cut on the fold, won’t the pattern need to be : length = 1/2 circumference + 1 inch? Since it’s cut on the fold, otherwise it would end up being 2x circumference length + 1 inch? I’ve watched this section and when planning my pattern I got a bit confused here 🙈 thanks

    • @s79design
      @s79design  4 месяца назад +1

      Hello and thanks for your message! It’s been a while since I made the video and I can’t remember what I said without watching it through again, but to clarify yes you are right the total length should be of the rectangle (no folds) Should be the circumference +1” so if you are doing half the pattern ( to make life easier) then yes it should be 1/2 circumference + 1” with the front edge (on mine I think it’s the edge I lowered) being cut on the fold so that your joining seam is at the back. I hope this makes sense to you, please let me know if not! I’m always happy to help ☺️

      Hi and thanks for the comment ☺️ glad you enjoyed the tutorial.. with regards to using fabric scraps for stuffing, if they are light weight and small, you could try mixing them with some filler, but they won’t be as bouncy as the fibre filling, or you could use them to stuff something more solid where you need a dense form, like a foot stool.. or a door stop.. humm thinking this may be my next tutorial 🤔

      Hi and thanks for the comment, a standard domestic sewing machine should be fine to sew fleece, and I have successfully sewn fleece on my domestic machine many times. Obviously not knowing your machine, I would recommend ordering a sample to test first, this will help ensure the settings are right (the correct needle, stitch length and tension) and that your machine can sew the fabric.

    Great video!! super helpful and in-depth tutorial, do you have any tips on adding a zip or buttons so there is an opening at the bottom of the wall part (the stuffed part along the edge) I plan on adding an inner "pillow" to each square so I can fill it the pillow, sew it completely then place it inside the main fabric, so it can be removed and I can just wash the cover (as I plan on using wool fibre and this washes at a different temp)

    Ugh I love this pattern but I still don’t fully understand the stitching. Did you use normal stitch on the whole thing? I only know the basics of sewing unfortunately. But I want to try this pattern badly. I have a very basic sewing machine. Do I need to use a normal needing with a normal foot? And regular stitching?

      Straight stich on the whole bed? (Not normal sorry)

    • @s79design
      @s79design  2 месяца назад

      Morning! And thanks for the comment, yes it’s just normal straight stitch, sorry if I didn’t make that clear, for most lined projects you only need straight stitch and if you want to stop fraying, you can zig-zag stitch over the edges, but it’s not necessary in a project like this as it’s all lined and raw (fraying) seam edges are all on the inside hidden by the lining. You should be fine with a basic machine, just make sure if you’re sewing thick fabric that you up the needle size, a thin one may break when sewing bulky fabric… but do a little test sew on your fabric first and then your good to go 😊 let me know if you need any more help, and happy sewing!! @@s79designoh my gosh that was so helpful. Thank you! One more question and I’ll leave you alone….
      Do I start with a square peice before I cut the oval and how do I add 5cm to the square peice before cutting into an oval? This might be confusing, sorry!

    • @s79design
      @s79design  Месяц назад +1

      @ hey no problem I’m happy to help! Ok so if you don’t have an old bed you can measure, I would wait for your dog to be lay down comfortably and with a fabric tape measure, measure the length and width of the surface area they are sleeping, allowing a bit extra (i allowed 5cm) room for wriggling around and sprawling out!. With this measurement, take a large sheet of paper and using the measurements you have taken draw an oval shape (measuring the same) on the paper ( to make it nice and even you can fold in to quarters before cutting and even out) you then need to add 0.5” (1.5cm) to the edge of this rectangle for seam allowance. You can double check you are happy with the base of this by cutting out and checking your dog will fit more than comfortable in the space, if in doubt go bigger!

    • @samanthamcconnell70
      @samanthamcconnell70 Месяц назад

      @@s79designthank you. when I have the measurements, and cut into an oval, will the measurements still be accurate? I hope this makes sense. • @s79design
      @s79design  Год назад +2

      Thanks Kyle, I’m so pleased you like it, you certainly can make the pattern in any size. I’m going to put some detailed instructions on my website but for now…I found it easiest to measure the dog when lay down, then draw an oval big enough for your dog to fit on, then draw a bother oval which is about 2” or 5cm bigger all the way around. Using a tape measure, measure the outer oval circumference this will give you the length you need to make the side pieces. Decide how tall you want the sides (allow an extra 1” (2.5cms) for joining then follow as per the video. Hope this helps, please let me know if you need any extra help 😁

    Where do you get the templet

    • @s79design
      @s79design  10 месяцев назад

      Hello, there isn’t a template because all dogs need different size beds, making the pattern is relatively simple, to get the base size I suggest measuring around your dog when they are laid out comfortably, or you could measure an existing bed. Then to calculate the height of the sides, just measure up from the floor and decide how high you would like them, bearing in mind that there will be a padded cushion in the bed. Hopefully the video will guide you through the rest, but If you need any help, please feel free to get in touch ☺️

    Well, that is an easy way to make a dog bed!!! So many thanks!! Now, the drama is when you try to wash any bed dog... I made some square ones for my dogs, very simple ones but is still a drama to wash them. Any wise advice regarding this topic?😂😂😂😂😂

    • @s79design
      @s79design  Год назад +1

      thanks for your kind comments! I feel your pain re the washing!! It does depend on the size of the dog bed, but with this style the pillow but is removable so I wash that more often and mine fonts in the machine, since I’ve filled it with polyester fibre fill it’s completely washable, I dry it on the line or in the tumble dryer. I have also replaced the stuffing once! I haven’t washed the outer section yet, although it’s probably getting close to needing it! I could squish mine in the machine without the base pillow but if it’s a big bed you may struggle 😬 I’m thinking I need to design a zip together modular bed that comes apart for washing!

      Thank you so much for this! I've been looking for direction on this kind of bed! It's been a long time since I've sewed but this looks so easy. My dogs are 9 years old now so I think I'm going to put a piece of memory foam in the bed part. Maybe put a zipper in as well. Then make some matching kitty cat beds! You rock! 😀

      @@hollymourant9268 ohhh thanks for your kind message 🥰 That’s a great idea to put memory foam in the bed part, it’ll be nice and soft for your dogs 🥰, I’ve actually made another one for my cat too, as he took over the dog bed, then there were fights for the bed! Glad you liked the tutorial and happy sewing xxx

    Can the bed be washed?

    • @s79design
      @s79design  2 года назад +2

      Hello! Yes the bed certainly can be washed, but it does depend on the fabric you have used. To make this washable and be sure it won’t shrink or distort I recommend you use a washable fabric and pre wash your fabric before cutting out. Also be mindful of the filling you use: polyester toy/ pillow filling is fine and will wash ok, but just check this too xx

I do also have an easier video tutorial for a box style pet bed which you may want to give a try? I’m happy to help if you do decide to give any of my tutorials a try and need any help. You really don’t show how to make the pattern

    • @s79design
      @s79design  2 года назад +1

      Hi Charmaine, to make the pattern I just measured my dog when lay down and created an oval shape that was big enough to fit on to, you can do this free hand, it’s then just a case of measuring the edge of that oval which gives you the length of the edge piece and dividing up into it up into sections. Because every dog is different it’s difficult to do an individual pattern. I hope this makes sense, I’ll try to do a tutorial just on making up the pattern 🤞
