Literally 1 or 2 people mention Peter Erskine on drums! The guy is playing his ass off throughout, and he's a fantastic drummer. Sad I never got to see them live!!
Nothing but great drummers in WR but Erskine brought a whole different feel to the group, to me. So tight, focused and light. Nobody ever sounded like that.
@@musictoddstuartfletcher yeah man he had a cool sound! I was lucky enough to meet him once at Berklee right around the time he recorded part of the Steely Dan album "Still Alive In America"! We corresponded a bit through Email after, nice guy.
@@leocalta5469 MO was more intense that WR or RTF, I've seen all of them several times. MO first band was just insane at the end of '73 before they broke up. Lucky to have seen them. I saw this Weather Report line-up in or near Tampa, Florida, USA. A friend and I drove down from Tallahassee. This is great. Jazz rock is usually a rock band with a horn section added, but this, 4 great jazz players adopting and adapting Progressive Rock style, I like even better.
How great Zawinul was. The mid keyboard is a reversed one on the first half of Black Market, with lower keys on the right and higher keys on the left. A beast.
Seeing this truly amazing jazz ensemble ,was an incredible experience for me I believe it was the Black Market Tour.Again totally amazing, these musicians are or were a quartet of extreme musical excellence,no doubt!...
I saw them in Ancienne Belgique in Brussels, Belgium. Was a fan from their first album and this live performance was an unbelievable treat at that time. I still love this band with their unique sound.
Live at Stadthalle (City Hall) Offenbach/Germany, Sept 29, 1978 53:14 Jaco Pastorius' bass solo: Dolores / Portrait of Tracy / Third stone from the sun
Caught WR at Sheas Buffalo Theater about 1978. Fabulous Concert. After intermission Jaco walked to the center of the darkened stage, sat in a chair, and played a perfect masterful version of Blackbird. It was the highlight of the concert for me.....an aspiring University at Buffalo Jazz Ensemble bass player......
Love it, thanks so much for this concert. I love Rockpalast and it brought many new music to my attention. To me Weather Report is one of jazz/fusion greatest bands of all times. In 82, at 14 years of age I bought my first WR album, the self titled "Weather Report". Needles to say, life changing. I worked my way back from there and also moving forward followed the band members and Zawinul in particular. Black Market is an epic track by the way. I had the privilege of seeing them in 84 at my first North Sea Jazz Festival, and Zawinul group many time after that, throughout Europe. It is so great that shows like this one become available to be watched by old fans like me, but also brings this piece of music history to a new generation.
Jeez Peter, take off the sweater already. What a show! Had to open up No Beethoven to the chapters on these years while the last third played. I recommend that for anyone. Great book. The greatest band? Up there.
I was listening them in Helsinki same year. Fantastick band. 1982 I meet Jaco in Pori Jazz Festival and it was very funny. We weer drinkin a couple drinks and Jaco tells me his Finnish Grandmother. Grate guy was him. R.I.P

La puissance de River People... Ce morceau me fait frémir à chaque fois. La précision synchrone de Joe et Jaco au début, puis la transe et la nuance de Wayne et Peter. Quel partage fantastique.
I saw them perform at the Berklee Performance Center Sept of 1976 , it was my first week at Berklee in Boston. It was a good look into the future of music and what was to come. Still sounds amazing !!
Joe famously inverted the control voltage for pitch from one of the ARP2600’s so one of the keyboards would play “normally”left to right, low to high pitch. The inverted keyboard played high to low, inverted from normal. What a genius!
Joe’s lead synth appears to be tuned “high to low” (moving from left to right)! That’s wild! As many times as I’ve seen this song performed, I never noticed that!
Joe told keyboard magazine that he experimented with a reversed keyboard and composed this specific melody from “Black Market” on it. He said that it was useful to challenge himself creatively.
Did anyone but me noticed that Joe Zawinul, on the first tune, is playing with his right hand on a keyboard which notes are reversed, up to 7:47 when the keyboard is set back to normal ?... This musician is a real genius !
