it's fucking bizarre that so much of the fashion industry doesn't understand the things that tim gunn understands about women's clothes. he's always talking about affordability, always inclusive of different body shapes, always realistic about women's lives. these are all functional suggestions that the majority of women can tailor to fit themselves. i love him!
Or having those basics he mentioned. It's so frustrating sometimes when all I want are a new pair of good fitting dark jeans and a white shirt and everything is overly "stylized." Not everyone likes ripped jeans or shirts drowning in ruffles.
+Ria Verdolaga exactly! if a man needs a plain, white dress shirt he can buy it in any department store but i have to search and search for one without frills or ruffles or ruching- argh! fashion designers, even low end ones, seem so out of touch with what women actually need.
That’s why I love Tim Gunn, not all of us need or have budgets that stretch far when it comes to clothing, affordable choices that are comfortable for everyday life!
I see a lot of people here have a problem with what he is saying. No matter what sorry guys he's right. These are classics. You saw these same garments all through time 40's 60's 80's and now 2018. These are times less. Most people want to look like a mess? Why???? When you look good you feel good.
Full marks to the stage for holding up all of that sheer divatastic awesomeness at once ---test passed with flying colors, whereas a lesser structure well might have disintegrated under the pressure
"Queen Latifah - I don't know if you'll get this, or your cast and crew either. 24's sending love your way and Tim's way, and an open invitation to those in need. Love, Isis' Family"
This video is several years old. Fashion is advancing to be more inclusive of EVERYONE, not just the ridged gender binary;---> "Women's fashion & men's fashion" that's geared for cis-gendered ppl only. ***Today, 8/2023, I saw an older, overweight man with a beard wearing a huge long t-shirt loose dress. Basically, a t-shirt moo moo that came down just over his knees. It was WONDERFUL! How free & liberating for him, say nothing about extremely cool & comfortable! ( This was in a rural small town Washington state, he was going into a hardware store. ) My point: wear what MAKES YOU feel beautiful & comfortable! Throw the rule book away.
Dottiecurran Did not hear the word 'staple' and 'building blocks'... those items are all pretty conservative as it but they are just that, building blocks of a wardrobe.
In college you may do an internship and need to make a good impression. You could become involved in extracurricular activities that lead to professional and formal opportunities where a blazer can be useful. Also there are college students who work while going to school and need to dress professionally.

Amazingly (or maybe not) most of this advice is still solid in 2023. Love my camel and black trenches, both of which I bought cheaply secondhand 😍.
