I knew Harley Race personally. He had a training facility across the street from my store. He and his wife BJ would visit often. He loved children. I would take my boy scouts over so they could see his belt and other awards. One time a reporter was there while some if his trainee were practicing. The reporter asked if wrestling was fake. Harley asked the man to step inside the ring with his trainee. The trainee told him he was going to pick him up and gently put him on the mat. The reporter got up, holding his back. He was asked if that was fake. He said no. He felt every bit of it. And that was not a full body slam. Harley was a great guy and full of stories to tell. I was deeply saddened when I heard he passed.
It just reminds us that life is not a gift, it is a loan, and sooner or later we are called back home. That is particularly poignant when friends go, one by one, as we get older.
