Yes: Top 10 Songs (x3)

- YES. YES. YES!
The masters of prog rock (and 80's pop?) Jon Anderson, Steve Howe, Bill Bruford, Rick Wakeman and Chris Squire... and Tony Kaye... and half of the buggles, and Trevor Rabin... and, okay like a million other band members. Yes, like their music, is constantly changing, shifting, adapting and progressing throughout their expansive 21 (or 22, depending on who you ask) records. So, picking only 10 songs was an absolute Tales from Topographic Oceans undertaking.
Despite their prog leanings, Yes has a few radio Billboard hits (often in truncated form) with 10 Billboard charting hits and their lone number 1, Owner of a Lonely Heart. Plus a couple of album cuts that still get played to this day.
What are your top 10 Yes songs? Leave your lists and let us know how we did.

Seems rather strange that of the greatest musical masterpieces ever composed in rock history is not included in any of the lists here. Close to the edge.
Excellent video! Yes is my favorite band, By now that's my list:
10- Southside of the Sky (Fragile - 1971)
9- Sound Chaser (Relayer - 1974)
8- Starship Trooper (The Yes Album - 1971)
7- Heart of the Sunrise (Fragile - 1971)
6- Turn of the Century (Going for the One - 1977)
5- The Revealing Science of God (Tales from Topographic Oceans - 1973)
4- And You And I (Close to the Edge - 1972)
3- Gates of Delirium (Relayer -1974)
2- Close to the Edge (Close to the Edge - 1972)
1- Awaken (Going for the One - 1977)
It is so cool listening to you younger Yes fans discussing this great band. Us old Prog Noggin Dead Enders who were listening to this stuff back in the 70’s will generally list the same old war horses as our favorites. But to see lists that not only DO NOT have Close to the Edge in the top ten, but instead include unlikely gems like Face to Face, Into the Lens and Leave It is unbelievably cool. Thank you for the video.
I'm brand new to Yes. Close to the Edge fricking RULES, though.
10. Turn Of The Century
9. Sound Chaser

In chronological order......All of them.
Can't believe Awaken didn't make any of your lists. It's my all-time favorite and, as described by Jon Anderson, the quintessential Yes song. That said, yeah, props for the choices you all made.
It was between 11-15. It made my original list. - Joe

I have not heard a lot of Yes, but I am still pretty confident that after all is said and done, "Close to the Edge" would be #1. From the incredible musicianship (even within the first few minutes), to the use of thematic material throughout the work to call reference between different parts, and then there's THE ORGAN. What a (melodic!) build in that third part, and to hear that organ descending from the heavens (I don't even think I'm exaggerating here) that makes you stand still in awe, and then among the greatest drumming of all time by Bruford heard in the fills shortly thereafter.
My dad when a Yes song would come on the radio: "Do you know who this band is?"
Me: "No"
Dad: "Yes"
Me (confused): "NO"
Dad: "Yes..."
Me: "..."
10. Going for the One

7. Long Distance Runaround
6. Starship Trooper

1. And You and I
Now that's what I would call a Dad joke.
@@ttmilbr Don't get that dad started on the Who and the Guess Who and Them.
@@harmonium8198 LOL! There's got to be a rock-and-roll version of "Who's On First" out there somewhere.
Who’s on stage. Guess who? No, I’m telling you. Who? Yes. Yes? No, Who?

01) Close to the Edge (Close to the Edge)
I went for a few less than obvious choices, skipping Fragile altogether which could have easily filled half this list.
So really an alternate Top 10 then, Fragile would fill half the list for you? The less obvious choices would then be not in your real Top 10.
@@martinhayward4466 fair enough
@@179rich Having said that, pretty easy to fill a Top 20 with quality.
Giving this round to Kramze for the inclusion of Sound chaser, Yours is no Disgrace, Gates of Delerium. Props to his other picks too. List totally nailed my friend. Only puzzling thing is how none of you included Close to the Edge which is often cited as the best prog song of all time!
puzzling is one word for it. Flabbergasted another.
Also appreciated his inclusion of the best side from Tales (Side 1).
@@bobsmith3217 I also appreciated his inclusion of a Tales song but my favorite Tales song is 'The Ancient' which has a great acoustic guitar solo by Howe.
@@uhdudewhy7980 The acoustic section of the ancient is gorgeous but you have to get through over 10 minutes of pretty harsh sounding music before you get to the guitar. But in some ways the payoff is more rewarding because of the really difficult section at the start of the song.
1) Close To The Edge
Siberian Khatru
Roundabout
And You And I
Leave It
6) The Rhythm Of Love
I’ve Seen All Good People / Your Move
Going For The One
Brother Of Mine
10) It Was All We Knew
mention : Yesterday And Today
ABWH is a YES album 🙌! I say that because you have Brother of Mine on your list. While technically not YES, I WILL ALLOW IT.
Thanks for the education. You guys really put in the work.
1. The Gates Of Delirium
2. Close To The Edge
3. And You And I
4. Awaken
5. Wounderous Stories
6. Machine Messiah
7. Tempus Fugit
8. Perpetual Change
9. Changes
10. Harold Land
OK, Here's mt list:
10. The Clap - phenomenal solo guitar piece. Not really a group Yes piece, but could not leave it out
9. The Remembering - Had to include one full-side song, one of their best
8. America - Great Prog reworking of Paul Simon classic
7. Yours is No Disgrace - Kicks off just a fabulous album of music, ever track fantastic
6. Siberian Khatru - This in combination with And You And I outshines the great side-long Close to the Edge.
5. Roundabout - Classic, and even a hit
4. Perpetual Change - Fantastic underrated gem
3. Heart of the Sunrise - Yes, one of their best, but just not quite The Best
2. Starship Trooper - Tremendous song, from their best overall album, The Yes Album
1. And You And I - the Highlight of Close to The Edge, and overall best Yes song
All of my top picks are from the 'truly classic' period, 1971-1973. Although they had many other good songs, Nothing before or after compares with the early '70's output. Just Sensational.
The Remembering deserves more love and so does The Ancient.
Perpetual Change is one of my favorites too.
@@janpoelkamp4229 listen to the live 28 minute Ritual.
Great job on this list. All 3 were great lists.
Yes songs. Great to know I found so many excellent songs (45!!) to enjoy. My list...
10 Changes (901) 9 wow the percussion and sitar work on this album is outstanding. Love this percussion fest!!♥️
9 A Living Island (The Quest ) A lovely end to very good album. So pleased to end on a high.
8 Leave Well Alone (The Quest) 9.5 it might not be the Yes sound for traditional fans. But I'm not one and love this folky beauty.
7 To Be Over (Relayer) 9.5 lovely enchanting song that thankfully saves this album. Eastern twangs and gorgeous chimes, beautifully sung. Timeless. Means I will keep trying with Relayer👍
6 And You And I (CTTE) 9.5 beautiful guitar at start sets us off on an epic rock classic ride. Ace. I bet The Police love this song🧐👮♂️
5 Long Distance Run Around (F) 9.5 Howes guitar work is so crisp and this so well produced you can't help but run alongside it from start to finish.
4 Does It Really Happen? (Drama) 10 why is this album not more popular? Fab heavy rock number with echoes of Mott the Hoople. Seriously cool song.
3 Wonderous Stories (GFTO) 10 wow such a great short mythical masterpiece. Utterly gorgeous.
2 Close to the Edge (I. The Solid Time of Change, II. Total Mass Retain, III. I Get up I Get Down, IV. Seasons of Man) (title track) 10 several movements there in that meld into a fabulously jazzy proggy choral rock driven whole. If you love the church organ section then check out All Thoughts Fly by Anna Von Hausewolf because you will love it.
1 Heart Of The Sunrise (F) 10🏆 the epic finale of Fragile is this Crimson esque beauty. Love it. It binds the whole album. Punctuates it. Completes it.
All the other songs rated 11-45 with notes📋
11 Endless Dream full version (Talk) 9 a great ending to this record. An epic soundscape with crooning guitars? Yes please.
12 The Ice Bridge (The Quest) 9 Grrrreat opener. The joy after so many beige albums is a relief.☺️ Something Maiden funkster in there. Strident beat ace.
13 Dare To Impress (The Quest) 9 maybe my rose tinted are on after loads of bad Yes albums but ace! Folky Cat Stevens vibe here😎
14 Machine Messiah (Drama) 9 maaaachiiine meeesssiah! oh 10 years after Sabbath's birth of metal we finally get a metal riff. Yes its a long song that sticks!!😎
15 South Side Of The Sky (F) 9 it's great. Always look forwards to the crunchy rockier ending.
16 Roundabout (F) 9 many people's fave as it charted but never will be one of my all time fave songs. It's great...just not hitting my music spot for repeat listening lovin. Kicks off fave Yes album brilliantly though for sure👍
17 Then (TAW) 9 awesome....almost Deep Purple thanks to the Hammond and serious drum work. Lovely folk rock song. Not prog at all,
18 Awaken (GFTO) 9 beautiful closer to my current fave Yes album. It's that Wakeman organ.🎹♥️
19 No Opportunity Needed, No Experience Necessary (TAW) 8.5 love the orchestration and base- so much more vivid a sound than debut. Great opener.
20 Everydays (TAW) 8.5 'well well well another cracking cover'👏 (a Stills song) at least as great as the first 2 on this excellent sophomore album.
21 Time and Word (TAW,) 8.5 excellent closing almost anthem that's just right for me😉
22 Siberian Katru (CTTE) 8.5 heavy rock Arabian Mozart with some almost soul driven grooves inserted? Yes please. 😎A fan? Don't worry about the rating ....remember prog is about the whole album.
23 I've Seen All Good People: a. Your Move, b. All Good People (TYA) 8.5 a lovely Beatles esque bit of sprightly prog. Fab instrumentation of course. Typical of the band it jives along well and is thoroughly enjoyable.
24 Parallels (GFTO) 8.5 love the Arcade Fire like church organ rigging throughout. Cool song.
25 Owner Of A Lonely Heart (901) 8.5 ah everyone heard this growing up in the 89s. It's like putting on an old tshirt. Classy opener. But first full pop Yes. Shocker 🤯.
26 Future Times / Rejoice (Tormato) 8.5 the drumming on the opener is outstanding. So well produced. And Wakeman at the end awesome.
27 Into The Lens (Drama) 8.5 'i am the camera' is almost Sparks funny🤠.
28 Going For The One (Title track) 8 yaaay a catchy song. Nicely done. Singer sounds a bit Led Zep! Refreshing.
29 Shoot High, Aim Low (BG) 8 really liked this slow groove on poor album.
30 Arriving UFO (Tormato) 8 weird but cool. Wakeman still on fire.🔥
31 That, That Is part 2 (ASC1+2) 8 spacey but cool lovely
32 Nine Voices (TLad) 8 yeah cmon acoustic stuff like this great, beige pop not.🧐
33 Can Happen (901) 8 oh Deepak sitar instead of Wakeman synth? Ok cool.
34 Where Will You Be? (Talk) 8 a real nice bit of Irish sounding folk. Yes should do more slow ballads imo.
35 Sister Sleeping Soul (The Quest) 8 a lovely upbeat bonus track. Sitaaaar!
36 Yesterday and Today (Yes) 7.5 a beautiful layed back sprinkle of a song. 7.5
37 Yours Is No Disgrace (TYA) 7.5 a cool trumping opener. Sets the scene really well.
38 Mind Drive (ASC 1+2) 7.5 niiiice guitar at start. Peaceful.
39 Don't Kill The Whale (Tormato) 7.5 well what do ya know. An electronic kick drum. I like it.
40 We'll Be Waiting (Talk) 7.5 a cool sweet anthem nicely crafted.
41 On The Silent Wings Of Freedom (Tormato) 7 gorgeous base. Pre 80s 80s vibe? Yes!
42 The More We Live - Let Go (Union) 7Lovely underlying mythical base synth.
43 From The Balcony (OYE) 7 a nice acoustic number. Maybe Yes really should've done an acoustic album. Sticks out from boring album.
44 Astral Traveller (TAW) 7 this strange attempt at psychedelic rock doesn't quite hit the spot....but is a good example of an early Yes moment that I like and whilst constructed well doesn't date so well either.
45 It'll Be A Good Day (TLad) 7 a decent pop song expertly arranged.
Where Will You Be is a great song and Trevor's finest work. I also like ENDLESS DREAM.
The Gates of Delirium ??
All 10 are easily in my songs top 1000. I'm a big prog fan so these are all epic...

I am so free as to include two cover songs into my top 10 and justify it with the fact that the band took the original songs as a starting point but put so much of themselves into them that the end result are two Yessongs.

2. Heart of the Sunrise (Squire and Bruford on the 3 minute intro rival best King Crimson, no wonder Bruford went that way.)
1. Survival (Love at first hearing, the first song I heard of them and I never not loved it.)
Survival is great. - Joe
america , i have that compilation , totally forgot it !!
I have not listed the epic side long tracks that may be among the best music Yes has produced since I do not really count them as "songs". Many bands, especially progressive and experimental artists at points tried to get rid of the "song format" and into a more unrestrained direction. Call them suite, concerto, works, soundscapes, concept pieces or whatever. In this aspect I follow Jason in that those may not be songs with structure and melody, often even without beginning or end - of course I divert from him in that I like this kind of music a lot, provided that it is well done.
Guys, the last part of Starship Trooper is called Würm, not worm, and certainly not (I am looking at you Jason) The Worm. Würm is the name of German river, after which an ice age was named.
Good to know. I guess I was thinking Wyrm. - Joe
I learned that when I lived in Germany for a time, the various ice ages were named by the rivers in southern Germany that they reached. But I think that Wyrm, Wurm, Würm and Wyrm are all having the same Germanic source and mean a large worm, often a dragon.
Also I really love "Home World" from The Ladder (1999). Also really dig the YES: Live From the House of Blues DVD and CDs, which an ex-girlfriend gave me for Christmas 21 years ago.
Time and a Word great pick!!
It would take me ages to work out my Yes top 10 list. Suffice to say, it wouldn't be too different than taking The Yes Album and Fragile and just removing the extras. Perhaps after long deliberation I'd toss in a deep cut somewhere.
Rather I'll just mention the 4 songs from these lists that certainly would not make my top ten (not that they are bad songs):
Face to Face
Time and a Word
Into the Lens (maybe top 20)
Owner of a Lonely Heart (I don't hate it, but no where near my top 20)
This is promising matching Kram with Changes at 10......and with ♥️🌄at no1👍👍....yeah I didn't nominate it in 71....ah well....great job guys
Great choice for #1, Jason!! When Drama came out, I was 12, too young to notice or care that there was a new singer (it was pre-internet, even pre-MTV). But I loved "Into the lens", it's my favorite as well.
I found out a year later that Horn and Downes reworked it as The Buggles (as 'i am a camera') on their 2nd LP. It's still good, but without all the great guitar and bass playing that Yes added.
All good choices, boys. I'm happy that you all are fans of this band.

You can tell these guys are kind of young. Although I certainly love all Yes music, and most of these picks as well. There's two songs missing from all 3 of their list. I think most hard core old time Yes fans would certainly agree, Close to the edge and Awaken have to be in the top ten, matter of fact that might be 1 & 2 on most lists. But you really can't do wrong with any Yes music. Love it all!!
Great choices, guys. I'd also like to give a special shout-out for "South Side of the Sky".

I gotta say guys, that this entire discography has been A++ material. I think I enjoyed this as much or more than any other discography you've done. Great points all around in both the album and song rankings, and there's something for everyone here. You guys might like Drama a bit more than I do, but I agreed with pretty much everything else.
But didn't you guys say at some point that Yes was a major group lacking a 5-star album?
Did your rankings improve by doing the entire Yes catalog?
Personally, I think the big three are all 5-star albums, and nothing else sounds remotely like them. In my teen years, I wore new grooves into those albums on every side.
I didn’t give any 5 stars out. 5 albums got 4.5 though. My opinion of them stayed about the same. -Jason
I think Jason and or Kramzer said that at some point in our 70s recap and I believe I was horrified. - Joe

Obviously I am not familiar enough with Yes but please, what are the Big 3 that so many experts mention?
the yes album , fragile, close to the edge . not mine tho
Like I had mentioned in the album clip, Yes songs IMO are better live. "Perpetual Change" on 'Yessongs; that guitar solo, which doesn't even begin until 8:26 is magnificent. same with "And You and I', on "Yours is no Disgrace" in the 72 movie you can see/hear Howe step on that Fuzz pedal at 7:33, and just kick it into higher hear. Also think that early "Sweet Dreams", "Looking Around" are excellent pop songs. Work out the changes to 'Sweet Dreams", and realize how clever that song is. Their cover of "America' is very good. Might be Howe's introduction to the band?? Went though a Yes phase many years ago in Italy, where they were big.
The guitar solo on perpetual change from yessongs is simply the greatest, the interplay of Howe, Squire and Bruford awesome 👍
@@senorfunball Yes, I think I can sing that whole solo. Unbelievable that he played it live. And I know the interplay you talk about; in that breakdown when Howe and Squire are neck to neck, and bring it back in.

I love this band, but I have to be honest that I haven't listened to the full discography. I basically have yet to fully dive into Big Generator-Fly From Here, while still knowing at least one track on everything between those two. That being said, I still wish to participate because I'm pretty certain my favorites would not change very much even after having checked those later albums out. Also I already know everyone is gonna hate me for including my top as a three part thing, but it all just flows so well I can't discard either of em. Any-Howe..

My Top Three Yes Songs - And You & I , Long Distance Runaround & Heart Of The Sunrise ( I Feel Lost In The City ! ) Chris Squire was probably the best rock bass player ever. Colin Moulding is pretty solid as well but I stray ..
YES, indeed. Colin is one of my very favs; possibly one the most under-appreciated bassists ever. Very integral to XTC sound.Top drawer as a songwriter, as well.
Man, it’s so hard to leave off any of Close to the Edge or the 4 group songs on Fragile. But I think most of what I’d have in serious contention for a top 10 made at least one of your lists with the exception of “South Side of the Sky”, “Turn of the Century” and probably “Close to the Edge” as well. I think particular favorites other than those 3 are “Heart of the Sunrise”, “Yours Is No Disgrace”, “The Gates of Delirium”, “Starship Trooper”, the other two CTTE tracks, “Going for the One”, “Machine Messiah” and “Leave It”. Way too hard to do a proper ranking. 🤔

Good list 👌.. The only one I am not crazy about is HOLD ON. Although, they love to play that one for some reason.
@@RadagastBrown420 That song just connected with me and my situation back in ‘83 at some level (i was 17). And i guess it just stuck. Still love the arrangements and the power it can generate.
In chronological order:
"Beyond and Before" Chris Squire kicks off this prog journey with a driving bass pulse, more like a herald of angels; Anderson's sweet vocals and under-rated Peter Banks jamming his guitar fills wherever there was room; a perfect manifesto;
"Dear Father" not on the sophomore album but the promo single from those sessions; the marriage of undulating melody, strings and organ;
"I've Seen All Good People" First Yes single the radio played in my neck of the woods. This emphasizes many key Yes traits: abrupt harmonies, acoustic/electric contrast, big build-up and oblique lyrics. Refreshing. Also check out the breathless version on YESSONGS;
"Roundabout" Really, the song that launched the classic band. Howe's amazing fret work and Wakeman's big keyboards anchored by the Squire/Bruford rhythm section. Again, a simple image turned into an inscrutable lyric that sounds more profound than it is: pure Yes;
"America" Can't pick anything from CLOSE TO THE EDGE since the three album cuts are really song-cycles At this time, they cut a cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "America" as a promo single but it's best heard in the whacked out full-length version with Steve Howe surveying many American guitar heroes (including Chet Atkins). This version ended up in the odds & sods YESTERDAYS collection before being added to the CD re-releases of FRAGILE and CTTE; worth seeking out, especially when Anderson scopes out the on-bus camera;

All great songs and many to choose from but I am surprised that Awaken didn’t make any lists. Might be their best 15 minute plus magnum opus
