- The deep, dark waters of the ocean hold many secrets and none as mysterious and majestic as the whale. Samuel D Hunter's play, The Whale, is a tale of a man who, like the whale, is both a creature of great size and power and one that is vulnerable and in need of protection. It is a story of pain, redemption, and the human condition, brought to life on the big screen by the visionary director, Darren Aronofsky.
The Whale is a complex and layered film that explores the depths of the human psyche, and the emotions that drive us. At the heart of the story is a man named Charlie, played brilliantly by Brendan Fraser. Charlie is an overweight, middle-aged man, who is dying of heart failure. He has alienated himself from the world and is living alone in his apartment, trying to come to terms with his own mortality.

Excellent analysis, this was what I was looking for. Thank you so much. Subbed!
Thank you for the kind words and for subscribing. Glad to have met your expectations and looking forward to providing more insights like this in the future.
In the 1851 novel "Moby Dick", the titular character is a whale who inflicts serious injury upon the captain of a ship, Ahab, who subsequently vows to seek revenge and kill the whale. This epic tale is narrated by a sailor named Ishmael, who provides a firsthand account of the events that transpire.
Charlie being an English professor, had long been familiar with the various perspectives and interpretations of the novel, but had never heard a truly honest opinion until he received an essay written by his eight-year-old daughter Ellie. In her essay, Ellie expresses her sadness while reading the passages in the novel that are purely descriptive of whales, as she felt they served only to distract the reader from the author's own tragic story. Ellie's candid and heartfelt perception of the novel resonates deeply with Charlie, as it signifies the genuine honesty that he always hoped to instil in his daughter. Unfortunately, his prolonged absence from her life caused her to become bitter and jaded, but reading her essay while on his deathbed allows Charlie to connect with her in a meaningful way. Thus, the story of Moby Dick serves as a bridge between a father and his daughter, enabling them to rediscover the honesty and connection that they had lost. Through Ellie's unique perspective on the novel, Charlie is able to find solace in the knowledge that he has accomplished something truly meaningful in his life - fostering a sense of honesty and authenticity in his daughter.
As the opening shot slowly moves into the black screen of Charlie's web chat, we are metaphorically entering the dark abyss of the ocean; the whale's home. The rest of the film is set within his home, and strikingly uses dark blue undertones that make you feel that you are observing the rest of the film under the sea. Aronofsky is a genius
That's the beauty of his films, watching a Darren Aronofsky film is a magical experience
But Charlie is not 'the whale.'
I think the rain also suggested that...Like a storm at sea or just water...And the final scene with the sun shinning after days of raining...Film was beautiful..
@@roscianyt Through my own metaphorical lense; he is.
@@TheEscapistDreamer completely agree
I was floored by this film. The direction is very good. Just waiting for Darren Aronofsky to finally receive an Oscar.
I wished you had reviewed Liz’s character tho. I think that character has a lot of depth
Brendan Fraser KILLED IT!!!! amazing job
i have to ask what does the bird symbolize? it's there in several scenes throughout the movie on a clean plate but there is one scene where charlie looks out the window and the plate is broken, dirty and old as if it's been that way for a long time. it got me to wonder if the events of the whole movie is just in charlie's head as he is looking for peace as his life is ending so he can transition into death.
The bird serves as a symbol of Ellie's current state of mind. She is in a lifestage where she is desperately seeking approval of others and consistently returns to Charlie, much like the bird that regularly returns to the plate for food. This plate, in turn, serves as a poignant metaphor for Charlie's life. Charlie is acutely aware that Ellie's pessimistic approach towards life could lead to a dire outcome. He fears that, in the event of his death, Ellie would be lost and unable to navigate the world on her own. The broken plate serves as a warning of what might happen if Charlie were to pass away without imparting the value of honesty in Ellie.
@@ninepictures9 I love this. Great interpretation.
I took it as a different meaning. He watches the bird come, and it's free to come and go. Charlie cannot. The daughter noticed the plate, and broke it the night she stormed out. Maybe a message to him; things are breaking. Then he binged... The plate was dirty because Charlie never cleaned it, and he finally noticed the level of irresponsibility he needed to claim.
So few movies are this powerful. At the end I teared up. I looked around the theater many were doing the same thing.
I wish I could have seen it in the theater. But nowadays, movies are so quickly gone from the theater that I missed my chance.
@@nancybarnes7109 Isn't that so true. Gone so quickly to streaming. I would never have picked it on my own but it was highly recommended by a friend.
Whole movie is pivoted around Brendan' performance. He really nailed it. Without his acting, this movie could have went south, an obesy gay guy and depressing life.
best review yet on this powerful film.
thank you
when did thomas “embraced love in all its forms”? he never stopped being homophobic lmao he only realized his catholic rhetoric was full of hate
mormon but yeah
I think this is the best analysis of this movie on youtube so far! Good explanation of all symbols and metaphors. I got to watch so many reviews which don't even explain the half of it which made me surprised
Glad it was helpful!
it’s because most ppl aren’t smart enough to see the meaning of this movie, and any idiot can do film reviews on youtube spreading their ignorance. this film is incredible.
I'm glad Ahronofsky is back after he was panned and mocked for Mother! Such a great and misunderstood movie. People still think it's about a writer and his trophy wife...
true talent always finds a way, no matter what
❤Thank you so much for this wonderful analysis of the film. The explanation of the images presented were very enlightening, a clear representation of our own moments of crisis and responses to it: flee or face it,embrace it to lead to either bitterness or redemption. What a very powerful and profound film!
Wait, what? Did you just accuse Ellie of doing something kind? I believe her intention was to cause harm to Thomas by "exposing" him and it backfired. Liz had Ellie's number.
No, Liz was part of the problem of why Ellie was the way she was. We learned about it in my education classes. It's called self-fulfilling prophecy. When you can only see the bad in someone, eventually they actually become that way, like when you keep telling a student they're stupid. It will get to the point where they stop believing in themselves and stop trying. Notice what happened at the end of the film when Charlie is telling Ellie how amazing and how perfect she is. Sometimes people get so down on themselves that they cannot realize the good in themselves anymore. They need somebody else to acknowledge the good first before it can shine out of them.
Absolutely agree she wasn't being kind there... how does someone gather all of that evidence and expose it "kindly"
I think this video isn’t depicting what I saw of Ellie. I don’t see this huge change in her, she’s a brat that can’t get over herself. I think she left at the end and the person reading the paper was an imagine he made up while dying.
Im futur Producer just wow for script and all the casting and the team 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Potato chip sandwiches are fantastic.
wonderful review, thanks for the insight!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I think you’re right about some things, wrong (or half right) about others, and made no mention of various other things. There’s a lot of angles to this film, and I think there’s a lot of interpretations as well as things one could unpack.
Brilliant review although I missed the catalyst for change in Ellie by the pizza guy . Will have to watch again
Thank Mr Robot. I wish you were human.
What an amazing review!
Thanks
Very good review!
thanks
Wow that something 😍 👏 😳 👌 👀 😕 😍 👏 😳 👌 👀
Creative guy, his all films are my favorites, this particular script is also so brilliant, dear Mr. Darren, we demand a universal basic income, social security and a small house guaranteed for each person living on this planet earth provided by the states for the least, everybody should feel themselves safe, secure, there shoud be no homeless on the streets, and we're expecting some other good movies in regards to these sort of dreams, thank you so much.
I understand that 💯

I dont agree with your interpretation of Dan tho
Why?
a reach for the stars tbh
Turned it off after thirty seconds. Read the Wiki plot. Realized Hollywood is crazy.
Sorry but the missionary kid is the hero. Charlie ruined his family. Neither Allen nor Charlie are happy in their lives and both commit suicide.
How can be the hero?
To me his character represents those who can only see as far as their nose, those who think they know better than anyone else.
His point of view throughout the movie doesn't change at all: he's just stuck on his faith and judgmental, even though his judgement is coated in doing something good (spreading the word of God). Although he gets to know Charlie, he still judges his homesexuality and rubs salt in his wound by saying Alan killed himself because he was wrong and had disobeyed God by choosing to love a man.
there’s no hero in this story and that’s part of the point
Will it let me more cry as the end of red dead redemption 2 ?
Yes.
no.
It is hard to compare but 2 months after did you watch it ?
i made a movie called the whale also but its all about my weener.
