I have learned more with 4 videos on here in the last 2 weeks than the whole time I had my first guitar 20 years ago, which I had for a few years till I just gave up and sold it. now I am on my new guitar at the age of 45 and getting so much from your videos, that keeps me going now, even a bit of confidence that I can do this which I have never really had before.
My substitute instructor was going over music theory with me at last weeks lesson and although I understood what he was saying it was over my head. So in trying to put it into practice it made no sense...this video just cleared it up for me...Thank you!
Got it! Excellent! Gary “Biscuit” Davis played the banjo in Dolly Parton’s band. He showed me this last year when I met him in pigeon Forge, TN. I kind of understood him. And he is an excellent banjo player. But you did an outstanding job and now I really understand it! Thanks!
Thanks so much for this. I intuitively “get” the piano, but I want to play guitar! This is the first time I’ve understood how piano translates to guitar. I’m just staring your other videos. You’re a great teacher.
Great question. You would apply the same idea. So for C major, C D E F G A B. Start on the first string third fret and play 3 notes per strings and you will have to move down the strings to accomodate.
One again a brilliant guitar lesson. I learned something new. Also, in Catholic School I (and the rest of the class) had to sing Doe, a deer, a female deer to an audience. Brings back a memory I have tried to forget. I really enjoy your lessons. :)
So, correct me if I'm wrong, the definition of a "major scale" would be: the progression of musical notes following the precise pattern of steps within the formula, w-w-h-w-w-w-h. (?) As I would assume the definition of a "minor scale" would be: the progression of musical notes following the precise pattern of steps within the formula, (insert formula here), and perhaps the same definition applies to all other scales, with each it's own formula?
Start on any string st. Note whatever this might be you can go horizontal or vertical up* down from one octave to the next octave ... wwhwwwh ... oh at any fret I'm i getting it .... Lauren
Getting it...... works if you can imagine a keyboard, no black 'half' notes between the B and C and the E and F....... never mind.... I'm getting it, anyway! :-D
Each string when open is tuned to a specific notes. The second string is tuned to B and a half step up from B is C. Same with the bottom e string. String is tuned to E half step up (one fret) is F.
Wow, I'm still not getting the whole scale concept. How do I find the other 10 major scales (you only told us what the C & F are (so I don't get why a C scale is played on a B string & a F scale is played on the E string, how do I figure the rest out & what string are they played on? Why was I born so dum when it comes to music!!
Merrilyn, sounds like you need my music theory 101 course. The C scale is not ONLY played on B string. I'm only using this as an example. Some with the F scale. I am only play it on the e string to show a little example. The guitar is both vertical and horizontal.
@@LaurenBateman thanks so much. Not sure I want to go too far with learning all the theory but would def love to just be able to play a basic song or 2 (purely for my own entertainment, not for audiences lol)! But will give this some consideration if I'm lucky enough to keep employed & able to afford some more lessons, thankyou. :)
Hello my great teacher , just to correct you a mistake ... we say [[ Do re mi fa sol la si do]] ..and I heard you say instead of [[ si]] you said [[ ti ]] 😂😂😄😄.. it's Si not Ti ... thank you my teacher Lauren 💕
Doe a deer, a female deer. Re, a drop of golden sun. Mi a name I call myself. Far a long long way to run. Sew, a needle pulling thread. La a note to follow Sew. Tea a drink with jam and bread.....
@@LaurenBateman thanks, think I figured it tho still struggled with the diagram, I bet no one else is as difficult to make understand basic stuff, so sorry (wish it were easier for me like it seems to be to everyone else)..I'm not ready to quit tho jus the same!

Brilliant teacher, making things simple.
You're welcome
could you explain how to use this on multiple strings?
Great question. You would apply the same idea. So for C major, C D E F G A B. Start on the first string third fret and play 3 notes per strings and you will have to move down the strings to accomodate.
🙋♂️ Now I’ll be learning those musical 🎵🎸🎶 A B C’s. Awesome 😎

That's correct! Music comes down to a number of formulas!
Great lesson...❤

curious about some of the ways to really learn major scales in relation to order of flats/sharps?
It's a formula. Take what I should you hear and change the starting note.
Brilliant Lauren. Do you have an exercise for beginners re up down picking? Geoff

This is a great help to increase my fret board knowledge.. Thanks Lauren. Cheers
Glad it was helpful!
Still Awesome!
Jesse thank you :)

I’m confused. How do I know where is the C, D, E etc on the fretboard. I’m a beginner so someone please help!
Use the examples I give in this video and try to find the notes on each string. There are multiple C all over the guitar. Each string has one.
🎸What a Mayer Scale🎸
👍
Finally this makes sense to my old brain. Thank you.

Hey Joseph, that's fantastic. I'm glad that you found this super helpful.
How do you determine the first note in the first fret? Top and bottom strings are F and the second string is C, why?
Each string when open is tuned to a specific notes. The second string is tuned to B and a half step up from B is C. Same with the bottom e string. String is tuned to E half step up (one fret) is F.
Ahhh.....thank you, I get it!
That means we have 8 notes in the f scale, Liam kilkee clare ireland. 🚙 😎?
8 notes if you include to octave note :)
Muchas gracias Lauren, excellent teacher you're simply the best. Liam kilkee clare ireland.🎵😁🍀

Ha ha ha. That's how we do it here. Interesting to learn.
Doe a deer, a female deer. Re, a drop of golden sun. Mi a name I call myself. Far a long long way to run. Sew, a needle pulling thread. La a note to follow Sew. Tea a drink with jam and bread.....
Ha ha ha. That's the one Steve.
Can"t really see where your fingers are (F sharp is one I'm not familiar with)
Follow the diagram on the screen. It's points out the F# very clearly for you. It's the first fret on the bottom string.
@@LaurenBateman thanks, think I figured it tho still struggled with the diagram, I bet no one else is as difficult to make understand basic stuff, so sorry (wish it were easier for me like it seems to be to everyone else)..I'm not ready to quit tho jus the same!
