- In this video, i show the AWD section of the trans, at first we just had the ok to diagnose the problem then we got the ok to fix. If you feel this issue, install a fuse to disable the AWD and drive the car, if drives normal then you know it's the AWD section giving a problem. I replaced the solenoid, set of pistons and clutch plates(i used Exedy frictions) soaked the clutch plates in oil for 45 min and back together, work very nice.......it's a fix. Thanks for watching. Gary

great work as always , thanks gary and thanks again for your help on my 2007 300c, its been doing great for a full year and we expect many more years from this car.
Great!! Thanks for the update
Is this still true for a manual transmission all wheel drive?
Gary the transmission magician, most impressive
Thank you.
Gary, Thanks for the heads up on what causes Subaru's with that automatic transmission to shudder when turning sharp corners. I was able to help a friend diagnose his 2006 Subaru Legacy today and now he can go to a repair shop knowing exactly what should be done to fix his car. Great video!
Thanks for watching, please subscribe, any questions just let me know
Brilliant presentation. Thanks Gary
you are a true gangster for making these vids thanks a shit ton man " the transmission magician"
Excellent information there, thank you sir!

Great tips! Thanks for sharing.

I got work to do, thanks for show Us how.
thanks a lot. I thought the CV's were bad and bought new front axles. The noise didnt go away and I was really getting stressed out. The FWD trick really worked and now I have to buy a new transmission
Your tires are exactly the same make, model and size?
@@GaryFerraro yes same size same company.
@@GaryFerraro in this part of the world we don't have specialist to service or repair the solenoid. Just new transmissions or used ones from the chop shops
@@meshackmutua1055 ok, you probably do have a bad solenoid. Where are you located?

How can you tell if it's the solenoid vs transfer case etc? Ive got a 2010 Forester MT with 106,000. It's thumping/ binding in low speed sharp turns after being driven for a while or driven at high speed. Mechanic just drove it around the block and told me the only fix at this point will be a refurbished transmission.
Hi. I have replaced oil on my Forrester 2006 (diff and gearbox). Immediately since then thevcar is binding. I should ad, I have disconnected the battery to clean terminals. I have used this method to override the system but need to diagnose the problem.
any advice what I can do or check for?
Thank you - well done!
Thank you
I have been following u and like all of the info U supply, helping me very much
great, how is reverse on the car?
is this the same procedure for a 1993 subaru legacy 2.2 automatic awd? i have binding bad when coming to a stop to turn into a parking space either direction, does it have the pistons , solenoid, and clutch pack in it like this car has? and the small seal like ring you pointed at that you said does not come with the solenoid? Just need to know cause i cannot find none of this for my car no where.... thanks
I have the same problem with my 1992 liberty (legacy) 2.2L auto. I discovered today that if you switch the engine off then restart, the binding instantly disappears, at least temporarily. Try that on yours. I’m not sure what that tells me however!!
Gary, thanks for.this info. The fuse worked perfectly. Now that being said, the car is moving easier and"freeer" Can I not rig a switch to the dash for when I need 4wd and run it in 2wd otherwise? Would that cause another problem? Car has 237K. If whe solenoid is assessable, is it an easy exterior replacement?
Not sure where you are but some people keep the fuse in until they need 4x4, like when it snows
Just bought a used 2004 Subaru Forester with 176,000 miles. It has this same issue and I'm sure it's been driven like this for awhile. Would driving with this issue present any worrisome damages or wear?
Also... In the most expensive scenario regarding this issue, how much would you say It'd be to fix if done ourselves?
Thanks, Torryn
What would you think if the binding issue only starts to occur after the car has been driven for at least 1hr or more? Transfer case fluid low or bad?
I would think something in the trans, did you put the fuse in to make it just FWD and confirm the bind is gone?
Could the transfer case module be the problem
Nice info.
Thanks John
Does the fuse method only apply to the Automatic? I have a 2004 impreza outback and 1995 Impreza L wagon, both are 5-speed manuals. Thanks!
Thanks!!! Now to remove the dash globe.
Hi Gary.. thanks for the helpful info.. is the transition solenoid also in the Manual transmission or is this video only applicable to CVT auto transmission models?
Not manuals, this is a regular auto trans not a CVT
Thanks so much for clarification! 👍
@@geolocations Welcome.
@@GaryFerraro Hello Gary, great video. Did you ever check the solenoid duty ratio live during driving? Does this system switch to fwd over 40 mph or is there always some pressure left on the clutch-pack? I am finding very different info about it.
Gary, did the new parts resolve the issue for this job?
Yes, worked nice
Hey Gary ! This video is what i am looking for!
I have 2007 legacy 4ea Auto transmission. Going straight is fine Only when i turn right side with low speed it makes binding and sometimes clunking noise. As you said, it probably central differential but does it affect to or related to solenoid ? And why ?
And also when i put accelerate in low speed , it makes like grinding noise from the centre dash board , does it relate to the centre diff or transmission ? Thanks
Plus what if i ignore this sign and drive , what could be happen ?!
Thanks a lot
As a test, did you install the fuse to turn it into a FWD and confirm it does not bind
@@GaryFerraro Hi Gary , Thanks for your comment. Yes , i have tried to make FWD (put the fuse in the fuse box with 15ap fuse)and still biding and clunking noise is not gone. In my case , the binding is sometimes happening , can i still drive ? or should i urgently go to a garage for check? And is it because solenoid problem or Centre diff problem? Many Thanks
Hi, Gary excellent video, what causes subaru's, that automatic trans Impreza 2008, codes P0700, P0708. Greetings from tulua Colombia
What is the definition of this code?
Ok I put the fuse in and the problem is reduced but not gone. Still very stiff to turn into a parking spot. Don't really notice the problem in normal driving only when turning into a tight spot and it will be stiff steering and jiggle a bit. Any ideas?
is the wheel hopping or binding or is it in the power steering?
@@GaryFerraro It feels like an old truck with 4wd on it does hop a bit in the front and when the AWD was engaged the back would skid or peel out slightly only when taking a very tight turn. It's a 1999 Legacy Sports Sedan 30th Anniversary Model. Dealer couldn't figure it out when my Grandpa bought it. It was given to me and still has the prob. I figured I would tinker with it. I did pump out the power steering over a few pump and drive cycles and that made it turn smooth but still does the same thing when you get to a tight turn. Thanks for your response!
Does this Fuse trick work on Manuals? I have an 09 Forester. Swapped rear diff and drive shaft but atill have the rorque bind issue. Center differential seems to be the culprit i suppose?
Honestly not sure, look in the under hood fuse box and around the engine compartment see if there is a fuse for FWD
I have the exact same problem on my wrx 2010, binding on turn after a long run. i put fuse on the fwd fuse and the engine cant start, maybe i cant do this trick on a wrx ?? is there an other way to put it FWD
Is this a standard shift?
I’m having this issue with my 1998 legacy outback is this in the same area your working on in this video?
Not sure if the fuse is located in the fuse box. if you do not see it, look right side of engine near fire wall and see if it's there, will say FWD
Have you ever had a 4eat that leaks through the centre Diff breather tube on top of the box? Phase one legacy Turbo 4eat.
I never had no, is it overfull? How bad is it leaking? is the vent system all there? could be splashing up as the diff turns
@@GaryFerraro I only noticed it about a month ago. Seemed to be allot of oil on the drive way. I traced the leak back to the centre diff tube. I check the level it was low. I topped it up to the full mark was fine for a week then I noticed the same spots on the drive way. Checked the centre diff tube was leaking again. I raised the tube higher above the air box. Still leaking. Only recent work I had to the car was have the CV boots replaced.
Otherwise transmission is running well.
I'm on my 4th Subaru and have never had a transmission or differential issue before. My girlfriend's 2006 Forester has torque bind in the rear and it started around 100,000 miles. It has 113000 now and her mom got it with about 40k on it and I have no idea whether they've done the transmission fluid or change the gear oil in the past. One of my questions to you is it safe to disable the all-wheel drive and only drive in front wheel drive? Logic would tell me it shouldn't be an issue and the transmission could last even longer, but I've heard from others it can be counterproductive if kept in front-wheel-drive for long periods of time. I apologize if you address this question because I do have a habit of not finishing videos before I ask questions! 😂
You can disable it with the fuse, shouldn't have any problems
Same happens on my 06 impreza non turbo wagon MT. More often when the roads are wet. Similar procedure?
Do you have an auto Trans or manual trans?
@@GaryFerraro MT 5spd manual
@@9thislandentertainment932 I would say no, The Problem with the Auto trans is either a solenoid or clutch pack which you do not have. It feels like bonding or wheel hopping on turns?
@@GaryFerraro I would say binding/shuddering. Factory wheels. Fairly old tires lol
My 2006 Baja is having really bad vibrations when turning sharply to park. Wondering if this could be the issue. If I put the fuse in to change it to front wheel drive and it fixes the problem, do I still need to get something repaired or can I safely leave it in FWD?
you can leave it in FWD if you like
Just recently bought a 2011 Subaru Outback CVT Automatic Transmission with 165,000 miles on it. I have this same type of binding you mentioned in the video. When I slowly turn left or right my Outback binds... but when I go straight it is fine with no binding. When car is cold it doesn't bind. but after a few minutes the car warms and the binding is there.
I have all correct and matching set of tires with equally good trending on all of them. I am going to change both the front and rear differential with fresh 75w90 fluid and also have my transmission fluid changed with fresh CVT specified fluId. (Don.t know if any of the fluids have ever been changed in this car's lifetime!" HOPING THIS WILL HELP ALLEVIATE THIS BINDING PROBLEM!.. If it doesn't work... how long can I drive the Subaru with the binding and "Just live with it" and hope for the best?
ps: Don't think I can afford to pay for a solenoid rolacement. thank you, Gary for your excellent videos!
I never had a cvt bind on turns, there is a transfer clutch solenoid or it may be call AWD solenoid but that would be just replacing the valvebody as the solenoid is not sold separately , try new fluids first
@@GaryFerraro Thanks Gary! Any idea how much replacing a valve assembly would cost in parts and labor?Praying the new fluids will solve the problem first. Thanks kindly again!
@@robneiman5392 think maybe around 2000. If posible maybe have a trans shop check it
Hi Gary, I have this exact issue on my 08 Forester XT. Weirdly doesn't switch into FWD when I place a fuse in the relay box. Any idea why that might be?
Are you sure you are putting the fuse in correct spot, it should say AWD by the fuse
@@GaryFerraro Thanks fo the reply, Yes definitely putting it in the right spot... Real mystery for me.
@@drgmackenzie Are your tires and tire size exactly the same, same brand and same size?
@@GaryFerraro Currently yes. Although they are getting low on tread so need replacing. I bought the car a few months ago so am unsure what happened before the purchase.
@@drgmackenzie ok question about the fuse, did you check it with a test light to make sure power is at the fuse?
I have a 06 Impreza 2.5i and I did the fuse trick. In awd my rear wheels shuck at very slow turns left and right. Is there an external sensor or anything?
so same problem?
Didn’t have the problem with the fuse in.
Nice video, thank you! Now that it is in front wheel drive can I just leave it there?
sure, just awd will not work

Impreza 2006, still binds on turns even with the FWD fuse... Any ideas?
Just to confirm, with the fuse installed, there is power across the fuse? All tires are exactly the same and air pressure?
@@GaryFerraro when I put the fuse, the "AWD" light (not FWD) comes on on the panel. Tires are the same pressure. The binding is so loud and rough that when I shift into R or D a BIG clunk shooks all the car.
When Im turning on wet grass or slippery surface the wheels just slip freely and no clunking happens.. Any help would be appreciated!
(Subaru Impreza 2006 Automatic 2.5i)
@@XJFOX ok, Have you had the car checked out to make sure brakes are sticky or may have other issues?
@@GaryFerraro The brakes are all good, not checked yet but I can confirm that the AWD system is acting like a "locked" differential works and that is what is making the clunk when turning. But will check
FOX1095 would you describe the problem as the wheel hopping on turns? Straight it’s ok
So, is the binding just due to the valve body in the solenoid not working correctly, or due to the clutches having gone bad (or both)?
I don't have binding (yet?), but my AT Temp light indicates code 79, which sounds like it's this solenoid gone bad. Also, when I put the FWD fuse in, it doesn't function (i.e., stays in AWD, and no FWD light on the dash after startup). I assume changing out just the solenoid may fix this?
The problem was the transfer clutch solenoid and the transfer clutch pack
What’s the average/ballpark cost for this fix? Thanks
Maybe around 800ish, not really sure, can't remember
Thank you!
@@ryancarter7920 do you have a binding on turns?

SHE LIVES AGAIN!!!!!!…..an interesting item at 3 minutes to 4:40 minutes in the attached video ( ruclips.net/video/GP7TInt4q84/видео.html ) & this video..... this was exactly what I experienced with my 1998 Subaru Forester but no-one could diagnose the problem.... £3k was spent/wasted with my Local Subaru dealer trying to fix it... but to no effect. Then I found the attached video link.... and then I found a good mechanic willing to do the work..... and yesterday we got our car back (with new solenoid in the transmission) and she runs great..... Well worth the effort.... these Subaru's can go on forever (almost)......Thanks for spotting the problem & making these videos..... George (London, UK)
My subaru is binding rear wheels and my clutch is low please help
Clutch pedal is low, ?
No way to do this on a 13 Legacy is there?
Not sure but look at the fuse box to see if anything says FWD
When I put the fuse the problem does not go away.
Maybe something else wrong, you feel just problem on turns? tires all the same size? Same make and model
What happens if its still doing it when i put a fuse in the FWD fuse and its still binding and popping when i turn only.. drivews straight just fine... 03 forester xs
Look at the rear diff and axles, did you check for power where the fuse gets installed?
Can't find lastest post, but wondering if they put the wrong trans in. Where did you have it done?
No came out of same vehicle, make and model, its actually shift in everything fine, just turns feels like its hopping ir dragging rear tires
Soo even when the fwd light is on its still binding when it turns ,,,im lost could it be the transfer clutch or duty c solenoid
I helped a friend with the binding issue, and what I found was that the drum splines were grooved. I went to LKQ, pulled the tailshaft off of another Legacy, and Lo and Behold... Its transfer drum was grooved too. I was never able to find any kind of replacement, so I filed down the grooves the best I could. It helped a little, but then my friend just sold the car. I have a feeling that this is causing the end of a lot of Subarus. I could never find that hard part offered anywhere. Maybe Transmission rebuilders can?
I'm sure used hard part guys have it, what year car?
@@GaryFerraro Thank you for the reply! I didn't expect that. It was a 99 Legacy Wagon, but it is long gone. I really liked that car, but after seeing another one at the junkyard with the same exact issue, I kind of wrote any Subaru off as a car I would buy for myself. Is this a common problem or inevitable wear area? The drum looks like it is stamped - I wondered if maybe the steel simply wasn't hard enough for those thin individual fingers digging into it. But, I am just a friggin novice :(
@@theephemeralglade1935 Really never seen the drum cause that problem, did you try a solenoid?
@@GaryFerraro It was the first thing we changed based on what I read, and what parts I could get. The solenoid didn't change anything, however, filing the grooves did make a small improvement.
