It's about 5 blocks east of the Ambassador Bridge. Go to Google Earth and plug in co-ordinates: 42°19'9.07"N and 83° 4'12.29"W .

Does anyone know what has become of the un-enlarged tunnel? Is it useable for any traffic these days ?

The one-time eastbound tube provides maintenance access.

CN pulled out in the 90's primarily to build a new own stack train accommodating tunnel between Sarnia and Port Huron MI. CP Rail in spite of the tunnel roof enlargement under the Detroit River still cannot accomodate modern double stacked container trains and until that's remedied they are shut out of profitable Chicago/Montreal/NYC business. CP headquartered in Calgary is raking in the Lion's share of profits in Western Canada doing what they do best. Hauling bulk over long distances.

wrong. they run double stack under the detroit river

The only double stack that can squeeze under that tunnel is the lower-cube sea cans. Our North American high-cube containers don't fit two-high. So, you'll see CP run high-cube cans through there only one-high.

Still not big enough for high cube containers, that's one of the reasons why 142/143 got rerouted to the TH&B.

Out of curiosity, what would a new tunnel tube have cost to build?

      Gazillions and then some.

As to be expected! CN pulled out of the partnership to build this. CN is not a great or even a good railroad by any means! Just a broken down, federally financed excuse to keep Canada unified. CN is a very sad exhibit!

CN has been privately owned since the 1990s.

Mean while CP seems to be doing fine :) Is there a better name for CN these days other then Crash National?

CN was privatized in the mid 90's and today it's one of the top 7 class 1 North American railroads and anything but a broken down sad exhibit. You need fact checkers before posting to avoid looking foolish and little more than an Armchair critic.
