Melfi is a poor example because vulnerable people falling for opposite-sex therapists is not unusual--the therapist fulfills a part of the the person's life that is missing: somebody to endlessly listen and provide constructive sympathetic feedback. At the end of the day, it's just a job relationship, purely transactional, however much there may be SOME personal, non-professional interest.
Every time I watch this series, I get something new out of it. This time, I was totally stuck with how horrible Carmela is in the earlier seasons. Even though their fights get worse as the series goes on, Carmela actually softens during that time. Those first couple of seasons, there is no doubt in my mind why Tony tries to spend every waking moment out of the house.
Dude you are by far the best theatrical analyst I have ever seen! And the way you work in one liners from the shows dialogue is just brilliant. I’m not one to gush but buddy you’re tops in this genre!
Agreed. I thought it was all pretty obvious actually lol The thing I find more interesting is the "why". What got them here. Cause there did seem to be some legitimate love in the beginning. Carm couldn't have been that materialistic from jump cause Tony wasn't even capable of providing like that back then, it was small time stuff. My guess is that Tony started with the affairs and it wore on Carmella and eventually they got so distant that they began seeking out what they were lacking in their relationship from others. Where Tony physically got around with minimal emotional attachment (beyond Carm and Melfi), Carmella emotionally got around with minimal physical action. They were both cheating just in their own way because they needed different things.
The other thing, cause a lot of times being the protagonist we just side with him. But in defense of Carmella’s rejection of Tony’s gesture; Tony is no longer allotted the privilege to engage on that level. I assume that’s what she thinks. He’s done so much damage that the way back in isn’t through play.

Carmela and Tony’s relationship was one of the most authentic feeling parts of the show. The hypocrisy and turmoil they both perpetuated felt so real. You could see a loving relationship somewhere deep inside but also how Tony being the sole breadwinner and Carmela the nagging pampered wife created this toxic dynamic where neither wanted to give an inch of self reflection. Tony wanted a smart independent woman to converse with but he chose to have a relationship where he is in control of everything. Carmela wants genuine attention and being made to feel special, but she expects it to come completely from her lovers admiration for herself and from her actual accomplishments. Both failed to really think deeper into why they were unhappy in their relationship other than pointing fingers at their spouse. Funny thing is, none of the their relationship issues come from Tony’s mob life as we saw Carm basically accept it even though she tried to deny it.

damn this was a great breakdown!
Carmela was the real villain of the series
That major blow up of Tony and Carmela was hard to watch. I had so many bad blow ups with my ex and a lot of those memories came rushing back. The anger, hate and crying frustration was difficult to see.
You know, Quasimodo predicted this

Right the penguin exhibit..
Nice job - it’s an insightful argument
This is the most memorable scene of the series thanks the Edie's portrayal of a wife that reached her threshold. Not sure how this is a scene nobody talks about.
Good video. Good work.
0:52 - JameS Gandolfini. It's about respect, my guy.
