- Each week, e-grocer FreshDirect delivers 100,000 grocery orders direct to customers' doors. It all happens from its Bronx warehouse, the size of 11 football fields. Using an advanced AI system, temperature controls, nine miles of conveyor belt, and a fleet of delivery trucks, the company is able to cut out three steps in the normal grocery store supply chain. Business Insider visited the warehouse to see how the company moves 3 million grocery items a week in the face of unprecedented pandemic demand.

This type of service is a Godsend. My grandparents can't drive anymore so this is a no brainer. Also happy to pay the extra costs.
These workers deserve a praise for the insane amount of work they're doing

@@luthert657 if the worker does work and make around 20 $ but they get paid 25$ than the company is losing money the workers are paid based on how much money they contributed to
I've been a loyal Fresh Direct customer for almost ten years, even though it's a bit pricey, the quality is far superior to other delivery services I've used. Great to see an "insider" look!

I’ve lived in the Bronx my entire life and had no idea we had such a large _Fresh Direct_ distribution center here.
It's in the friendly part of Bx...No where near Gun Hill Road 😂😂😂
The facility is fairly new that’s why, they opened up in 2018, they’re old facility was in LIC Queens

In my country's Walmart equivalent if the total you buy is more than $40, delivery is free of charge. Most people shop groceries through mobile apps.
They are a lifeline for NYC, respect to them for keeping the city going during this rough time

The logistics are mind blowing. Looks like a company with integrity. 10-15% less waste, coming direct from farms and they've actually organized so that their workers that are packing aren't overworked. Hopefully they get paid a New York living wage too.

I grew up with Fresh Direct in NYC and it is one of my fondest memories seeing those boxes on our doorstep. It really saved our family and was my first memory of online delivery anything! It was crazy to be able to shop online and receive those items to our front door every two weeks..

I used to teach a case in business clases about Webvan and Homegrocer. Their downfall was a combination of insufficient demand density and over investment in expensive systems that dragged down profitability. Fresh direct has narrowed its service to a very high density area. That coupled with their good service is has likely been the key to their success. Would still be cool to see a documentary, though.

How can Farmers contact this Platform to sell their Products? What Margin gets the Farmer from the customer price?

ive worked at there warehouse and its not organized as described everything is chaos and disorder we get new hires weekly, imagine how many people get let go on a daily.

This trend is kind of cool for those of us that remember the days of milkmen and dry cleaners that ice cream trucks and diaper services that filled the neighborhoods that diminished late in the twentieth century. It's good to see household delivery returning, Only the door to door salesmen and the knife sharpener guys are so far still not seen returning but stay tuned.
this immediately struck me as genius idea, even if logistical nightmare, b/c cutting out so many middlemen & inefficiencies. Honestly can't wait to use service like this, rn don't have car so I usually order from grocery stores themselves...all the way at the end of the supply chain lol

Next generation business here. Family farms delivering foods to homes.
I work at a comparable bussines in the Netherlands, called PicNic. PicNic at has around 300,000 customers throughout a large part of the country. They'll open their first giant automated distribution center next year. It will be able to service 150,000 new customers. PicNic is growing so fast and becoming so popular, that it has a wating list of more than 100,000 people.
customers usually order two or three boxes full of groceries at a time. One or two days later the groceries will get picked and subsequently delivered on the same day. The products come in from farms and food distributors. They arrive in the distribution centers, get placed on the right location and get picked during the day. The totes with groceries get placed in steel frames, which are put on trucks and delivered to local hubs. From there, the frames with totes are placed in the smalland recognizable electric PicNic vans and they bring it to the customers.

FD entices you with $50 off $100, I even got offered free delivery for 2 months too on top of that. But their price is premium aka expensive.
