I used to teach a case in business clases about Webvan and Homegrocer. Fresh direct has narrowed its service to a very high density area. That coupled with their good service is has likely been the key to their success. Would still be cool to see a documentary, though.

I work at a comparable bussines in the Netherlands, called PicNic. PicNic at has around 300,000 customers throughout a large part of the country. They'll open their first giant automated distribution center next year. It will be able to service 150,000 new customers. PicNic is growing so fast and becoming so popular, that it has a wating list of more than 100,000 people. customers usually order two or three boxes full of groceries at a time. One or two days later the groceries will get picked and subsequently delivered on the same day. The products come in from farms and food distributors. They arrive in the distribution centers, get placed on the right location and get picked during the day. The totes with groceries get placed in steel frames, which are put on trucks and delivered to local hubs. From there, the frames with totes are placed in the smalland recognizable electric PicNic vans and they bring it to the customers.
