  • This is a bit oversimplified, but it gives you an idea of how important it is to keep plants in close proximity to windows

    You’ve helped me to understand lighting in 30secs! Thanks! Can you please do a video on lighting from different directions, e.g north, south east and west lighting for plants. Thank you.

      Hi, that's a good idea :) I did cover light from different directions (east, west, north, south) in my blog post on bright indirect light: www.mrhouseplant.com/blog/what-is-bright-indirect-light-for-plants/ but I should do a video as well :)

    I’m a plant scientist and i just did a video on this as well. For northern climates in the winter put your plants nice and close. The window does act as a filter unfortunately!

    Scindapsus propagation.
    Is it better to water prop or put in potting mix??

    • @MrHouseplant
      @MrHouseplant  9 месяцев назад +1

      Hi, you can do either water propagation or soil propagation. In some cases water will be faster, in others soil. The primary factors that determine the propagation speed are light and warmth of the propagation medium, not the medium itself 😊
      Some people have more success with water, others with soil. I recommend trying both and seeing what works better for you 😊

    Oh my gosh! THIS HELPS ME SO MUCH! My string of pearls is in front of the window, just off to the side because someone told me that setting it directly in front of the window would burn it up. Also, it gets light all day, but that window ONLY lets morning sun in. My Dracaena marginata is in front of the same window, directly in front of it, about 2 feet away. Should these be getting morning or afternoon?
    I also have a Chinese Evergreen, that my mother got, believe it or not, as a wedding gift from my father, back in 1971! She kept it alive & thriving all those years! She passed away in 2014, so my brother split the plant in half so I could get a section & he could keep a section. It was doing so very well until about a year ago. My husband's friend decided to repot it for me one day when I was gone. Nice thought but.... They definitely used nothing but soil that needed perlite & EVERYTHING else added & they didn't know. Since then, most of the plant I have lost. I've battled root rot. I've got maybe four small pieces of it left. I definitely got it out of that compacted soil as soon as I realized what happened. Is there ANY advice on it that you can give me to help it? I know they grow slowly. This makes me feel so sick because it had gotten so beautiful & full & now it's looking like a totally different plant. Does it need bright indirect light or low light? Need any sun? Which is better for it, morning light or afternoon? I definitely appreciate you taking the time to answer my question about my babies!! It feels like I can take 2 steps forward with all of them only to end up taking 5-6 steps back!

      Light is the most important factor in houseplants growth. I assume you are familiar with direct vs. indirect light. If not, here's a helpful video : ruclips.net/video/7CRfBhi8uuQ/видео.html My SOP is getting several hours of direct sun, if you have it in a spot where it would get morning sun, that will be fine. Plants behind walls don't get a lot of light, check this video as demonstration: instagram.com/p/CDO6S0BAfm6/ For aglaonema, I couldn't really help without looking at photos and getting more information, but generally what I can suggest is checking the roots/repotting, making sure it gets the brightest indirect light you can give it (buy a light meter if you don't have one) and don't water until the top 2-3 inches of the soil have dried out (depending on the pot size, even more). When repotting, add at least 20-30% perlite or another amendment. Hope this helps :)

      @@MrHouseplant Thank you, so much! YES, it helps me a lot. I've moved them all closer to my windows. Spent almost all night long moving furniture & plants around. I feel good about the placement of everything, so far! Just hoping that where I've put everything works out for me this time. I didn't realize before, that even though they were close to windows & getting light, that most of them were getting low light. Thank you again!! Sending lots of love, light & good, positive vibes your way! Stay safe & be careful! 💚🌱✨🌒🌕🌘✨

    You show a south window and a west window. What about a North window or a partially obstructed north window. According to the video they’re all the same which is wrong. I have a north window that looks onto a balcony so it’s partially obstructed and I would like to find out what plants I can grow. Personally I consider it low light even thou it is “bright”. All of this is very unscientific. I would get a light meter if someone could tell me how many lumens the different species need.

    Hello. Will tomatoes and other sun loving plants grow Ok in bright indirect light? I have plants in our terrace that gets bright indirect light. The roof is high enough about 20 feet for plants to see the sky

      Have you tried measurin the light with a light meter? I'm not sure how well they would do without any direct sun...maybe if the light levels are 15,000-20,000 lux. Just an estimate on my side, hard to say for sure, as they do need a lot of energy to produce vegetables

    Is it just me but I can't see the Infographic ... I'm a visual learner, I need to be able to actually see the graphic. We just moved into a new house and it's a rowhome, my sources of available light have drastically decreased, just trying to figure it out

      Glad it's helpful :) But light will depend on hundreds of variables, whether there are obstructions outside blocking the light - trees, buildings, window size, whether you have blinds or curtains...I can do a video explaining sides of the world..but the best thing would be to buy a light meter, that way you can know exactly how much light you get :)
