I understand the fly spray comments, but I live in Australia and there are certain times of the year you could coat them in flyspray and it makes no difference. Maybe that’s what is happening there? Anyway, the actual training part is great, been working on my boy going into canter without having a meltdown. This technique has helped so much. He gets the cue now and doesn’t panic with the transition. We’re just working on maintaining the gait in a relaxed way and that is better as well.

Good video and information and explanations. Hard to believe that there were so many comments about fly spray. It is summer and there are flies, gnats, etc. I use fly spray, fly boots and a fly mask and the flies are still annoying to the horses. Sometimes I think the spray attracts them.

Arm chair observations from someone who, once upon a time, used to train.
    1. Compared with where I lived (San Diego, CA) other parts of the country have a lot more horse/deer flies than I grew up with. It seems to me that a good dosage of horse spray before training would be in order. If they have had it, then I truly feel sorry for the level of annoyance they must endure. (Also, since I'm not close up, I cannot tell if that tail swishing is also a bit of temper/attitude.)
    2. My "heart-horse" was a thoroughbred also. It seems to me that especially when circling to her left, which appears to be her non-dominate lead, the smaller circle made it harder to comply with the request. I've found that for longer-legged breeds, that really matters. I believe if she were given a couple more feet of rope, she would have done better.
    3. The Bucking with the Saddle at a Lope: We often saw that happen early in the saddle training. What we found was that the stirrups bouncing on their sides from the beginning was just too much. We would initially tie them up on the seat until the horse was more comfortable. Then we would attach a rope to the stirrups under the horse so they wouldn't fly up and bounce so much. Then we would untie them. We also started all the horses with a bareback pad, often when they were yearlings (or older depending on the breed) just so they got used to the idea of a girth.

Six minutes into this. The horse is crowding her so she pets her? She takes a step to into her space and she steps back? That to me is fundamental and huge. You cannot get her to stop turning so how do you expect to get in the saddle? Let me see what Mr. Rose here thinks. Well Mr. Rose was not accepting crowding. I would have backed her up for any forward motion. He was addressing what the lady asked about very well. I would guess the lady hand feeds her treats. I will hush and watch other videos. I sub and see.

I live in the humid south and it's unbelievably buggy. I use ultra boss or pro zap pour on for cows. Safe for horses. It's oily but it works. Apply from poll to dock in a line, along belly and chest. You can put a little on legs but I use shoo fly boots. Lasts 3-4 days in pasture.
      Don't dilute it.
I also braid a cow ear tag into mane it has insecticide in it.
      Hope this helps y'all.

Makes me sad when I see them bronc with the saddle on. Definitely holes missing in the training. I never have them bronc because they’ve had rugs ropes and lots of other things that has desensitised them first. They don’t even care they have a saddle on. I wonder if this mare has ulcers??? Thoroughbreds are notorious for being sensitive and most have ulcers. Maybe worth checking. All the best ❤
