Thanks for covering Chrom. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing "an art of Cloud" guide, but I'll enjoy whatever content you make regardless of whether that video is eventually made or not, so don't worry about it.
As a former Chrom main this is a really good video. A couple of things I feel you’re missing: 1) down throw is a really good combo tool that can lead into a lot of juggles, especially at low-mid percents 2) down tilt at max range can’t be shield grabbed by most of the cast 3) slide cancel f-tilt is a really good burst option for Chrom mains since it’s less laggy than dash attack; also good for tech chases 4) when recovering right below ledge you can double jump and then air dodge up to recover since Chrom has really good aerial drift; practice spacing it though 5) if you buffer SH Fair going forward, you can double jump going backwards before landing since Fair has really low end lag. 6) if you know your opponent is going to air dodge IN after using Side-B, you can hit them with the first two slashes, wait for the air dodge, and then punish them for pushing buttons 7) Side-B going up, most consistent. Side-B going out has the most knock back (least consistent, sometimes kills). Side-B going down has the most damage output. I love the video, this definitely has a lot work put into it. Had this come out a year ago, I would be a better swordsman. Keep up the good work.
Down tilt at any range cannot be shield grabbed as it is -5 and the best shieldgrab is 10 frames. You just need to either spotdodge or dash back after it and it's impossible to grab
Dep Ice Cream purely because of his disadvantage state. Don’t get me wrong Chrom bullies the whole cast when he’s on stage but it’s not worth the fear of going off stage. There was a moment specifically where one of friends was playing Incineroar and he kept revenging my Up-B and I finally thought this character isn’t worth all trouble. I went from playing Chrom/Roy as my main/secondary to ZSS/Roy. She has a better overall kit and Marss is one of my favorite competitors.
Not quite sure how Chrom's Side B works, but the down variation of the third swing does less knockback for Marth/Lucina, so characters are less likely to fall out of the fourth hit. Otherwise, same thought-process applies if you think they'll fall out early: punish what they do afterwards, usually get's you a grab if they shield, an Fsmash if they airdodge-in, or a juggle/edgeguard if they jump.
17:45 thank you so much for making this point. A lot of players have a really poor attitude about getting killed by “jank” when their own ignorance of the game is truly at fault. There’s always something we can do better.
On the other hand, I think calling it jank remains apt because I don't believe Ike's Aether does the same kind of dragging down opponents on the ledge just because they stuck a limb out. For some reason, despite Soaring Slash being obviously based on Aether, the two attacks have very different hitboxes.
@@HarvestMasterJack It's based off of Aether conceptually, but they function notably differently. Chrom's is faster, doesn't throw his sword, does more damage, and spikes harder. Different hitboxes are to be expected. That being said, it acts consistently; if your body box is off ledge at all when caught by it, you get flushed. I wouldn't call it jank.
@@Legendary0Hero My whole point is that I've never seen the identical portion, the spin followed by the spike, drag an on-stage opponent off and into the blast zone when it's Ike doing it. It appears as if Aether keeps the opponent's body in front of Ike and on-stage whereas Soaring Slash has a tendency to suck an opponent into the position below Chrom. That is very peculiar for two moves that are designed the same way, especially since it looks like both moves are supposed to use an autolink angle for the spin hits. The descending spikes also have different hitboxes between of the two of them, with Chrom's being significantly larger, extending past Falchion's actual blade by twice as much. That's incredibly odd, in my book.
Ultimate Frame Data is a great resource you discussed, perhaps you should add it in the description. Great video, your work is much appreciated as these type of videos are essential for learning a specific character. >:)
7:00 Brutal... I mean, really really brutal. I learned that combo, used it against my friends and now they don't want to play smash with me anymore lol
I remember taking three sessions with you when you charged 25 but I gave you 35 cause you're so awesome & helpful! I definitely improved & made top 8 at my locals! Highly recommend people do lessons with you! Thanks for this awesome Chrom guide too!!
That may be true. BUT, a good Chrom player will do his/her best to stay offstage. And even if you do get him in that position, if he’s good at switching up his recovery, you may not know what the heck he’s going to do.
@@bassmandan9484 This. Chrom does have more mixups than what Izaw went into in the video. He can catch offstage attempts with Fairs (since they end so quickly, throwing them out doesnt interfere with his recovery), and he can mixup high/low Soaring Slashes/air dodges. It's still definitely a weak point of Chrom, no doubt, but it's a risky gambit to edge guard him, as choosing the wrong option can get you killed, even outside of Soaring Slash spikes. Getting caught in the spinning when chrom grabs ledge will reset neutral due to the knockback, and Chrom hanging from ledge has access to some of his strongest combos (Fair->Uair->etc.. off ledge). You can see an example in this video where Lavish kills a Wolf at 0% for edgeguarding him incorrectly. I liken Chrom's recovery to Fox's from Melee-- each of his mixups has a correct response to it, but you have to choose the right one, there's not a single answer thatll work.
I will again attest for IzAw and his sessions. They really do make a difference and I highly recommend them. I literally went from not knowing what a buffered aerial was to PR'd in my region in 6 months due to his guidance and expertise.
around 17:20 when you talk about recovery mix ups i think you could have gotten in more detail about Chrom recovery mix ups. Utilizing ledge snapping can let you slightly microspace Chrom’s up B to make the move harder to intercept.
Thanks for these guides as always! Chrom is a great addition to the roster imo, it's always good to have the parallel consistent sword hitbox for Roy just like Marth has Lucina, the result is really fun character to play as and easy to pick up, although his recovery can be frustrating at times. P.d: I miss his old Soaring Slash spike, i know it was kinda bs but it was fun cheesing hard Spirit fights.
Wow, this makes me want to pick Chrom back up. I mained him since launch and only dropped him back in November/December for Terry. I just got bored of him and I just now realize that I wasn't really using him optimally at all, I was just spamming nair, fair, and f-tilt and rarely tried juggling. But I guess it's a good thing that I dropped him cause since Terry dropped I have become much better at the game and less button mashy and actually try to do combos, I'll have to practice him again cause this video made him look so fun again.
13:25 Sometimes your opponent will fall out of the 4th hit of regular side b. So do something kinda like the leoblade in smash 4, but instead do: Side Up Up Side or Side Side Up Side it'll connect a lot more often
If you condition them on ledge with down tilt to stay down for a bit longer, you could ledge trump back air. Something I have used quite a bit recently.

when I stqrted chrom I fished for the first hit of nair to jab but then realised that up air is a lot easier to hit and follow up with.
I really like Chrom and Roy in this game I just really need to get better at hitting jab--->back air consistently. I like your suggestion of using the trigger for jump cause I usually try to claw so i can hit the c stick in time but it always feels awkward. Thanks for the tips, great vid!
would it be ok to do art of bowser next?
I've beaten a tournament Chrom as Samus by nair ing out of shield
