I have the 1959 f2.5 FL version and I absolutely love this focal length. It forces you to frame differently than your ''usual'' 50 or 85mm. Even at f2.5 the background is suuuper creamy; can't imagine 1.8! Great vid!
I have that lens as well (i believe the same year if i recall correctly), adapted onto Sony, and also love the focal length. A year or so ago bought the Samyang f2 which is much better in terms of CA and sharpness, yet that lens from the 50's is amazingly compact with a 58mm filter thread and built in sliding lens hood.
I use 135mm 2.0L for events and it’s so creamy. I don’t mind the little imperfections that the EF has. I feel it gives the photos an artist look. The lens flares is unique when shooting on sunrise and sunset. 1.8 is not far from 2.0 so don’t see a huge advantage other then having IS now. Nowadays lens are made too perfect and having unique artifacts and imperfections is what gives character. The 135L EF is a vintage lens and will not switch over. The RF lens I’m wanting from Canon is 14 and 20mm L 1.4 coming next year.
Love how you have to move when composing yourself using any fix lens, But moving around finding the right composition using a 135mm is soooo much more fun then composing for any other fixed length. and when you find that right composition at 135mm its an instant million dollar shot.
A fast 135mm is one of those lenses that you can use for landscape, portrait, weddings, event, street, astro (with a drive), and some wildlife. It is frequently one of the last lenses most people purchase, but one of the most loved when they do. Not always in the bag, but you know when to take it and nothing else will do quite the same.
@@FrankP83 Contemporary "photographers" are more consumers and promoters of capitalism than actual photographers. Nowadays it's more a matter of status than photographic composition. I have a friend who bought all the RFs. But he only use the RF 85mm f/1.2. The others are kept by status.
It is also an extremely capable indoor sports lens for crop bodies (200mm equivalent)...paired with a 30MP crop sensor, it is even more compelling for cropping

Thanks PM. ...The EF 135/2L has always been my favourite lens in Canon line-up. However, it became really hard to recommend in recent years due to 100/2.8L Macro and the latest 70-200/2.8. This new RF lens makes up for some of those hesitations. If you love portraiture, lots of bokeh, or just like to be a little more incognito on your shoots, this new 135/1.8 looks amazing. When it comes to culling lenses, I’ve never understood the overlapping focal length argument. You have primes and you have zooms. They are going to overlap. That’s like saying I don’t need my 11 mm wrench because I have a crescent wrench. One is utilitarian and universal and one just does a better job at turning an 11mm bolt and it’s easier to use.
It's not underrated - it's just niche focal length for prime lens and it's not suitable for everybody. Though in the terms of image quality and rendering - 135mm primes are probably most cinematic lenses whatsoever.
I am learning about the manual mode of the camera ,can anyone explain why Pete used higher iso over slower shutter speed ,it can be his personal choice but it's it not recommended to pump iso cause of noise. Also the landscape was in decent lighting conditions.
Because once you're out into telephoto range, it's best practice to keep your shutter speed fast, (even with IS), to avoid shake. Tele shooting is way less forgiving than wide angle.
I'm sure he would have liked lower iso, but it looks like he was doing most of this handheld, which typically means at the bare minimum you want your shutter speed to equal the focal length for sharp images(i.e. 1/135 here). Also you want the higher shutter speed with the many subjects he shot. Hard to tell exactly what lighting conditions were too since all the shown images were post-processing, it does look quite overcast though. At the end of the day though, while hitting native ISO will always be ideal, these modern mirrorless cameras are pretty solid in the 1-2k range, even higher for some cases.

I personally shoot EF to RF adapter with the drop in filters. Works amazing. Works amazing enough where I've shot weddings, engagement, and concerts and it's been amazing.
It'll be lens dependant on quality and speed. But comparing RF glass AF speed is night and day. It's scary how fast RF racks Autofocus.
@@pixel_overkill Hi thanks for getting back not got RF camera yet but them not letting Sigma make RF yet has put me off abit but if EF to RF was looking for it to be fast for concerts and sport mainly and also wedding
These views! Loving all the Iceland content. Cheers
2 at once?!
let's go Pete!

Those pics😳😍😍😍
Matti’s photo on 5:27 has radial filter?
PS: Love the lens absolutely awesome place to take it 🤩🏕🌄
The most professional looking shots I've ever taken are pretty much all with the 135/2L. Nothing else blows out a background at distance like that lens (until this one, I guess). Great to see this new lens, but the price is scary.
Everything in the RF system is absurdly overpriced.
@@michaelbell75 Well it's an IS lens, while my 135/2 is just a USM lens, so there's that. It's got a quieter motor and a control ring that interfaces with the camera. I believe I paid around $1K for mine, but that was back in 2008-ish. The price honestly doesn't surprise me that much for what it is, but yeah, it's crazy to pay that for a single lens unless you're a professional.
@@sundaynightdrunk IS isn’t worth anywhere close to $1,100 but it’s your money to waste.
@@michaelbell75 It's also incredibly fast at 135/1.8. But I'm not buying one; I don't even have an RF camera. I shoot an ancient 5D.
@@sundaynightdrunk 1.8 is not incredibly fast and the older one was f/2 which is basically no different. You would be hard pressed to spot the difference between 1.8 and 2
Canon may have fixed (made better?) the corner shake, but that display on the side... just wiggling away... I can't stop seeing it! But hey, the lens looks amazing!
That's the desk shaking when Peter is moving his arms around, not corner shake from the camera.
@@DanielFazzari Oh I know, I just thought it was funny that after such a to-do with the corner shake it all comes down to the ol' wiggly monitor to make up the difference.
wow I love this lens!!
new photographer here, curious as to why the iso was at 1000 and not something closer to 100? From what ive watched and read 100 is the best to be at if possible. Is that not the case?
Does anyone knows the background music?
Pete, I haven't been on RUclips a while so I have to say..the absolute best day this week is today. With a back log of peter mckinnon videos to catch up on. (Enter coffee montage) haha 📸🤙🤙

At 6:00, that photo, why did you shoot at ISO 2500, and not just lower the shutter speed a bit instead?
You're not worried about grain caused by high ISO?
@Big papa Yeah I was confused by the settings. Maybe he'll chime in to the comments and let us know :)
Hi there, what is your view about the weddings? Can this lens be a top mark like on other your photos? Could it be a A-Z for one complete day of wedding ?
I have a vintage Vivitar 135mm 2.8 and it’s pretty unique, I use it on my EOS R all the time.

Outstanding F1.8 L IS USM achieves bokeh both for portraiture and sports photography.
Really love it 😊
