A question was posed to Salam why the “neutrino” particles are massless to which no one had an answer in those days. This became one of his greatest intellectual challenges. In 1956 after attending a conference in USA, Salam on his way back had worked out an answer and duly sent his proposal to Wolfgang Pauli (acknowledged as the top most adjudicator of physicists of the time) for confirmation. Pauli replied to him by saying “My son, do not worry me with this rubbish. Go and think of something better”. But Pauli’s reckless reply was to prove wrong. In 1957 Yang and Lee came to the same conclusion as Salam but were awarded the Nobel Prize instead for a discovery which Salam had cracked earlier. What a shame.

Isn't it funny how a lot of scientists get arrogant and don't appreciate new ideas when they get older. Like Einstein and Pauli and Newton.
Also neutrinos aren't fully massless. They have a small amount of mass.

Zakir Thaver is a very dedicated and hardworking man, but as a nation we seem to have this manufacturing default, where we can’t help ourselves but make gods out of nothing and put them on the highest singhasan, then bring them back down to nothing, it happens over and over again.
I’ll sum it up with a bit of poetry,
Hum zamanay main kuch aisay bhatkay
Keh abb tou apni bhi gali yaad nahi
Suggestion for the next documentary, I would say, unbiased and impartial documentary on mirza ghulam ahmed qadiyani will be very interesting and should answer many question we are afraid to ask.

1:09:18 I think this is "Saanson ki mala pe ". Shehzaad had mocked it in the past . However, I just love this song though it is an acquired taste.
Saanso ki maala was the song sung by Nusrat on Rishi Kapoor's wedding in 70s.
This bhajan(meaning devotional poem/song) is originally written (don't know whether composed) by Meerabai, a great Indian poet in 1500s.
I am not sure about the popularity of this bhajan pre and post Nusrat but he definitely gave it his own style.
Though Meerabai was a Krishna devotee, this bhajan can easily be interpreted to be dedicated to Niraakaar Brahman, the conception of The God which is a formless entity. This conception is The God is very close to the conception of Allah.
Meerabai is also a prominent saint in Bhakti Movement and I believe that there were many similarities, interactions, inspirations between Bhakti and Sufi movements. It could be something that can be explored in this podcast as well.

Is غیب a problem word? Isn’t science about discovery? And if so then
غیب ہو گا تو discover ہو گا نا؟
Maybe it was in an attempt to “sell himself” to a certain audience but can that not be translated into Salam cleverly finding words to engage with a lot who’d otherwise not listen to science, period?

  • @pale_blue_ruby
    @pale_blue_ruby 6 дней назад

One reason that i think science communication on a platform like RUclips for Pakistanis is so difficult is because it is rarely ever engaging. I could be wrong of course, but when i was 10,I gained basically unfiltered access to the internet and the first form of media I ended up encountering were science channels like "it's okay to be smart", " Vsauce" Etc. And don't even get me started on animation like krzgesagt and ted ed. Many Pakistani educational channels feel dry and more like classroom lectures than an engaging video that someone can casually watch. Of course there's also that desi brainrot, where short, simple and shallow videos fare better than long form in Pakistan, but I still think there is some untapped potential in younger audiences (teens/preteens/young adults). It can at least light a small spark in some kids, like it did in me, to be curious about a topic and research it.

Zakir did say in the end that he doesn’t know everything and he might have said something that wasn’t right. I just wanted to mention that Nusrat was not a traditional qawal, he was trained in Hindustani classical music and his genre of music was a fusion of hindustani classical and qawali which was already a bastardisation of traditional qawali. Traditional qawals like Aziz mian would not really ‘sing’ they would perform and recite. Also Nusrat did sing a lot of ghazals because he was a trained classical singer and for you Shehzad he also did an album of romantic duets with Madam Noor Jehan.

more research into Indian classical music would have answered all your queries. qawwal generally (especially those from established gharaana) are not folk singers. They are well-trained in a formalized musical tradition. Raags have binding structures, and even though they allow for a lot of improvisation unlike the Western classical, but still, they follow a set of rules. Indian percussion is written and far more advanced in terms of time scales and rhythm than the Western counterpart. So I feel a little more appreciation of it will help. It is a proper science and I think reducing it to "just a feel thing" seems as part of the same rhetoric that if pyramids were made in Egypt then surely aliens would have made them.

Really enjoyed the podcast; great content! Just a suggestion: try not to generalize all Pakistani doctors under one umbrella. While there may be a few with outdated or misguided theories, the majority, especially younger ones, are incredibly smart and progressive. For instance, I was at a brunch yesterday, and the level of conversation was outstanding.
Regarding Shahbaz Gill, the majority support PTI because they don’t align with other options-it’s a personal choice. Shahbaz Gill happens to be the only PTI representative here, and APPNA invites representatives based on the situation.
I feel that in your bias against PTI, you tend to filter anything related to PTI as dumb, stupid, or cult-like. While there might be some who fit that description, the majority do not, and stereotyping PTI followers into one category isn’t fair.
As for the podcast, it was excellent! Please produce more content like this.
