I feel like GTA 1 was the introduction to the series and letting us know the basics such as the maps liberty city was the first level so we got the first 3D game set in liberty city and so on

First GTA for the Gameboy wasnt sadly Good. It lacked what we loved in this series - cars.
Seriously, play the game yourself, and you'll See that its quite difficult to acquire a car!
GTA 2 (the Gameboy port) is much better, and much more enjoyable
