    Gesture based systems are fundamentally less practical than physical buttons. Even if the gesture detection was perfect, which it never is, the biggest drawback is there is no physical feedback that you just performed the gesture correctly. When you press a button or pull a trigger, you know exactly when you've clicked it in enough. When you move a stick, you can feel how off center you are.

    I'm happy that someone's at least trying to make new steamvr controllers. But for me, the best solution would be if meta allowed their quest pro controllers to be connected directly with steam via WiFi and be used woth any headset. The tracking is amazing, the size is perfect and there's no need for base stations. The only problem is that they only work with quest pro and quest 2.

    • @davisbub7890
      @davisbub7890 Год назад +2

      The pro controllers don’t work in the dark unlike base station tracked ones

    • @vicktorfilmbusker5492
      @vicktorfilmbusker5492 Год назад +1

      @@davisbub7890 That's true, but why would you need to play in a dark room? I mean, you wouldn't know the difference anyway while in vr. I just think it would be a great option, because they are amazing to use, and much cheaper than base stations and controllers combined, and without the hassle to set it up. Self tracked things is definitely the future of vr.

    in conclusion niche product that creates more problems than it solves because someone really wanted to avoid adding a thumbstick on top and 1 trigger button. I think if they were smart since they already created the USB c attachable steamvr tracking module they could theoretically make different kinds of controller attachments like a gun one for pavlov etc specific games.

    Not sure if anyone mentioned this (I only comment after the first 20s of a video, and never read any other comments 😆), but that thumbstick controller issue can often be fixed with "electric contact cleaner spray". It's still fantastic there are alternative controllers, though, not taking away from that!
    But I was having the same super-frustrating issue with Quest 2 thumb stick. When I started asking around, this was the fix and it worked! "WD-40 Specialist" makes a version, and there are others if you search (I used Canadian Tire's version), but wow - worked like a charm. Spray it in and around the thumbstick, move it around a bunch, and wait ~1hr.
    Probably not for all cases, but worked for me and worth trying 💪. But if not, for sure get those replacements 🙂

    Sounds like they'd work well with a virtual controller for when you would need buttons and directional pads instead of a free hand. Kind of like a software keyboard on your smartphone - it's not part of the app you're using but it pops up when you need it. You could hide the controller simply by not putting your hand near it. Haptics might help with using it when you're looking the other way.

    I backed this project two years ago, paid full price. They arrived two days ago - and then I learned one needs Lighthouses to use them. Waited two years for nothing and wasted quite a lot of money. 0/10 - do not trust Etee. They never mentioned the Lighthouse requirement.
    This comment should obviously tell you that I don't have Lighthouses and have no intention, or capability, to install and/or buy them.

    look very cool and futuristic for sure, the problem holding them back is developers will never develop games to fully utilize their hardware capabilities and unfortunately thats whats gonna doom them to be a novelty collectible item at best

    Why are most steamvr-compatible controller manufacturers allergic to good design? If i wanted to move without a thumbstick i'd just use Vive wands. An Index controller with a dead thumbstick has more functionality than these.

    These seem really slick and well made, but they also seem like a case of a designer prioritizing form over function. Maybe they work better for a productivity setting but, at least for games, buttons are used to engage actions that are too complex for simple hand and finger movements, without having any kind of tactile feedback. Hopefully they’ll make some kind of addon to bring the buttons back. Otherwise, these just aren’t practical for games.

    I feel bad because I want Etee to succeed, but I think VR games have moved toward buttons and joysticks, making Etee not suited for most VR games. I also think camera hand tracking ala ultraLeap\Quest will take the remaining market share Etee is going for. Wish them the best, but as your review shows, there just isn't much value to them for the average consumer.

    Yeah, anyone making controllers who thinks that buttons aren't needed at all is an idiot, especially if they even remotely expect the controller to be used with games at some point, and they shouldn't be designing controllers as far as I'm concerned.
    Also, of course we use buttons in the real world, all the time in fact. They're just not built into our hands. But they are there on a crap-load of the devices we use on a daily basis. So, unless we can somehow magically simulate all those different external physical buttons in some controller that has no buttons, or via some mystical nothing at all physical method, we really do need some buttons on a typical VR controller for it to be practical in any meaningful multi-use sense, and 1005 so when it comes to gaming (same is true of thumbsticks and the like also).
    Basically, while interesting, these controllers are just utterly pointless when the vastly superior Quest and especially Quest Pro controllers and the like already exist, at least if you consider gaming even remotely relevant in VR.
    And, just to add to that, right now most hand/gesture control is far too young and clunky as a technology to be a meaningful alternative for anything other than some gimmicky uses, so I really wouldn't encourage anyone who's pushing for that in the here and now. They clearly aren't properly in touch with the reality we're all living in--pun intended.

      G2 controllers are so so shit. Yeah index is expensive of you need to get base stations plus watchman dongles. Dongles are like 100 usd on top of controllers and base stations.
      However the index controllers are literally 5 times better than g2 controllers.
      Tracking is so so much better. G2 controllers just feel like cheap plastic compared. Battery life I found also was incredibly poor compared
      I've owned vive og vive pro, index and g2v2. Current rig is g2 with index controllers .
      When I got my g2 I was getting so frustrated with the controllers after going from the index and waiting on the dongles to arrive. Worst vr controllers I've used. I am a shooter player so controller precision is super important. I found the g2 controllers drfted so often. Incredibly frustrating

    Don't really see a reason.... A glove would outdo any of these controllers any day. Don't know why VR is not played with gloves, VR gloves have been around for decades, this form factor here shown is cumbersome, I don't know why they keep expanding on that idea.
