Kala Bamboo Ukulele Review

- I take a look and review my first ukulele purchase of 2021, the Kala Bamboo Concert ukulele from Kala's Exotic Wood range of ukuleles.
This is an interesting unique looking ukulele that is generally well put together. Unfortunately on the one I bought the tuners are completely rubbish. You can turn them almost a quarter of a turn and they do nothing at all. This is either sloppy work, or sloppy QC, probably more likely a QC issue.
The second issue with this ukulele is that it just sounds a bit dead. There's no real life to it, strums sound quite flat and there's no depth to it.

On the whole, it's not a bad ukulele I just don't think it's quite worth the money that Kala are selling it for.
In the video I compare it to my Snail SUC M2 which is slightly more expensive but sounds considerably better.

Kala does have some QC issues. When you make as many as they do some lemons slip through. I have a bamboo tenor from Kala and It doesn't have those issues. Sounds sweet! But the tuners are an easy fix.
I totally understand things can slip through QC, in my opinion the shop should have also picked up on it.
The tuners being an easy fix might be the case but more beginners aren't going to want to get involved in that at all.
Nice video, thanks for the info. Bamboo is extremely versatile - I didn't know you could make musical instruments with it!
Actually me neither, I never even considered it
I was just about to order one of these, so glad I didn't, thanks for the heads up! Cool channel by the way.
My advice would be to try it first, this isn't a ukulele that you should order online based on the tuners alone
It's a very sturdy and loud uke perfect for outdoor playing. That's why I bought it, and apart rom the poor tuners, I love it !
Apologies, I missed this comment. I'm glad you like it.
Appreciate your knowledgeable review. I have the tenor from Aklot in bamboo. These tuners have no play in them at all, very tight. The finish is quite good, overall. I have the darker Aklot tenor. In a blind test, my wife liked the mellow tone of the bamboo.
I think what I like best is that bamboo is very durable and very eco friendly. It is actually more durable than wood and it is not a laminant. Take care, Bob
I still have this uke, despite the fact that I don't think it's great there's something about it
Thank you for your review. Yes it is bright.
If I were to create a villainous femme fatale who works in a seedy club in an exotic location for the next James Bond movie, I'd call her Kala Bamboo.
Does it need a double entendre?
A real review, I like it. Bamboo is not wood. A solid wood and also a good laminate wood is better than this one .
Just bought it and the tuners are really good. It's very bright and oud too. Maybe they upgraded in 2023. How is yours holding up?
Glad you got a good one, it's possible that I got a bad one or they updated them later. I still have mine, I just put up with it
You play sooo beautifully. Maybe you can tinker with the problematic tuner/nut and fix it yourself?
I probably will do something with it
i can confirm that the tuners were rubbish on my tenor i had owned. kala needs to be better with their hardware.
Oh that's interesting, I thought maybe mine was a one off
Looks pretty, too bad about the tuners.
Yeah it's a shame
Interesting, thanks for the heads up. I can't speak for the Kala bamboo but I have an Aklot bamboo in tenor size which looks very similar and it sounds great to me since I changed strings to flourcarbon. Check out a sound sample with Fremont Black Line low-G ruclips.net/video/UsWh_tDlxvw/видео.html Btw. the Aklot was half the prize. Unfortunately they are no longer produced but are still available on A***on.
I think I'd seen a very similar looking Aklot at some point which must be the one you're talking about.
I've never owned a full Kala before, I've had two Makalas in the past so this time I wanted an actual Kala. I won't write them off based on this alone though.
Why don’t you take it back and get the shop to correct the tuners? Sounds like they’ve been at fault. It sounded good the way you played it….
In hindsight I probably should have, it was six months ago when I bought it and I think that opportunity has gone.
I'll likely still hang on to it, it's not a bad ukulele. It's not as good as my Snail and I actually prefer the look of this ukulele. I'll probably attempt a fix at some point.
Actually I watched another review on RUclips recently and that review also mentioned the slipping tuners
@@UkuleleGo I have a couple of tenors and was thinking about getting a concert, but not sure if I’d find it cramped… I’m now used to a 38mm nut and I have fat fingers…..
@@MrEricgal funny you should mention this, the actual ukulele I wanted before buying this was an Islander, partially for the wide nut. Unfortunately Brexit issues meant that they were very hard to get in the UK at the time.
@@UkuleleGo I have an Islander and I really like it… wouldn’t part with it to be honest… wider nut and slim neck…. Last time I looked World of Ukes had some in stock….
@@MrEricgal when I was buying this one I enjoyed doing the research but when it came and I played it I sort of realised that I don't really need any other ukuleles. Even when I talk about the sound difference between this and the Snail, most people won't even hear that.
I've never played a really expensive ukulele and I'm not hugely interested in owning one but I would like to hear the difference with my own ears one day.
I had a hard time believing that bamboo would make a good tone "wood" (bamboo is a grass, not a wood).
I guess I've been proved right. This ukulele is cheap compared to the Martin one at half the price. The Martin has nasty HPL back and sides (HPL is similar to Formica).
Personally I think bamboo looks ugly compared to real wood but that's me.
Bamboo grows like a weed so I guess there's plenty of it but seeing that it's abundant and cheap, it's not like you need experts picking out the best pieces and aging them for years, why are they charging so much?
I do like the look of the bamboo but at this price point I think there are better options. I've actually seen some well reviewed ukuleles made from Formica in the past.
