    I agree with a lot of what you said, but I don’t think intuitive eating can eventually lead to a healthy diet for someone who has never trained their tastebuds to eat and enjoy healthy food. I know a shocking number of people who never eat vegetables for example and have “hated” those types of foods since they were children. Those people may never crave a vegetable then even if they should still eat vegetables to be healthy. I do think there is some “tastebud training” for healthy foods that isn’t intuitive, but I think a person’s tastebuds can be trained to enjoy healthy food in addition to donuts. Intuitive eating seems to only work if you already enjoy a wide range of food and might eventually crave something healthy.

      I was thinking the same thing. And about losing the taste for ice cream, etc. That food is chemically developed to make us want to keep eating it. I love the idea. And definitely think it works for a lot. But as you said....not everyone.

      Certified junk food addict here: I definitely ate mostly shitty foods for the first few months of my "intuitive eating" journey (eg: frozen pizza, frozen french fries, mostly processed crap), but gradually I managed to transition to a more balanced/reasonable diet?
      I work out every day though, so I kinda have that safety blanket of extra calorie burn so I didn't gain weight... Even now with my balanced intuitive eating approach, I don't lose weight cause I find I'm eating back all the calories I burn as well as my regular baseline calorie needs...
      So yeah it's not a great diet at all for someone who wants that fit/thin aesthetic, or maybe even for someone is totally sedentary/not active at all? But it's totally awesome for active people wanting to maintain a certain weight and keep their sanity lol.

    OMG HELLO! You just said exactly what I've been thinking & saying all of these years & it is so true. This does not just pertain to foods but everything in life(as long as it hurts no one). I would say, to anyone, if you want to go skinny-dipping on a Tuesday evening, in the middle of winter, with a bunch of friends, do it. If you want chocolate chip ice-cream(vegan) for breakfast one morning, do it. If you want to take your kids out on an adventure to the Bahamas & you can afford it, go for it. You only live once & those moments & your legacy to live life to the fullest, the way you see fit, is your choice & your choice alone. Yes, eat healthy & do what is right but sometimes it's OK to just let loose every once in a while.

    These same misleading ideas are spreading everywhere.
    5:55 - Allowing your _body_ what it "wants" or "craves." *The body does not crave.* The body _needs._ There's a big difference. *The brain craves.* Why does your _brain_ crave certain foods? Food companies study how to get you hooked and binging on their products. The basic combination is high fat and sugar without fiber.
    Example: You may crave a chocolate cake that is essentially all sugar and fat over fruits and nuts. Your body needs the nutrients (and energy) from fruits and nuts. The chocolate cake is all energy without nutrients. Even if the amount of energy in the cake and fruits is the same, your _brain_ doesn't register that cake is devoid of nutrients. When you go with the cake craving, your _body_ has to process both sugar and fat (at the same time) without receiving nutrients.
    If you study and practice how to feed your body with the nutrients it needs, junk food loses its appeal. If you learn just how much you're being robbed when you eat junk foods, they lose their appeal.
    It's like smoking. We've been educated about how unhealthy smoking is, so we don't do it. Even those addicted to smoking will try to quit given the education and desire to avoid consequences. That's not a bad thing.

      Woooooow!!! I'm glad somebody said it. I agree with this comment 100%.
      I love your style and your content Caitlin, but this information may not be applicable to everybody as well as it is not great advice. I personally suffer from tremendous digestive disorders which I am only able to keep under control when I refrain from those things my body craves.
      As it is to some extent true that we should not obsess about our diets, as a qualified health coach I will say you have to be conscious of your diet and how you are eating it because we live in a very corrupt world. And this day and age expects to make a lot of capital off our food industry and health industry at the stake of humanity. So, whatever politician wrote that book about "Eat whatever you want" I am sure has a lot in it for themselves. Or perhaps you're not relaying the information thoroughly? Because it truly boggles me that it's OKAY to eat what your body craves. I have not read the book and I don't wish to defame the author or you. I think you're pleasant, kind-hearted and very ambitious. But please study this further as you don't wanna end up taking advice from just anyone. Because truly anyone can write a book today and it's not necessarily cross verified or fact checked. Much Love girl. Keep the content going. You're Great!! 💛

    • @general_electrics
      @general_electrics 5 лет назад +3

      @@Loveisalloneneeds I'm in agreement. This is a corrupt world and we live in a toxic junk food environment. I wouldn't be surprised if the author of that book received encouragement or direct support from certain factions of the food industry.
      Our cravings in this toxic junk food environment have led to obesity, diabetes, and other metabolic disorders. Intuitive eating is *very unlikely* to stop or reverse the rise of these conditions.

      Cravings don't just come and go. I literally crave coke every single day and could drink it instead of water. I actually do not get sick of it. Does it mean i should give in? I don't believe so because in the long run it ruins my overall health. Also the foods i crave are not good for my health because im intolerant to certain ingredients. Based on this theory my body should know and would not want me to at those bc they are not benefitial for me. I see where the idea is coming from and i agree that people have unnecessarily restrictive diet that i borderline disorderly and there is a need for ppl to go against diet culture. At the same time I don't feel that intuitive eating is the complete answer.

    • @general_electrics
      @general_electrics 5 лет назад +3

      @@orsikocs Right. For example, if you found out today that coke contained an ingredient that could make you sick would your brain be "smart" enough to stop craving coke? Probably not. And that's the problem with intuitive eating. Your brain's cravings can override its own reasoning and what your body needs.

    I really appreciate this video and I love that I've seen your diet change more recently to be a little more "forgiving." I've been following you for a long time so I remember the HCLF days and whatnot. I've been a fan of intuitive eating for a while and it really works for me. I allow myself to have unhealthy junky (vegan) food when I want it, and I still eat pretty healthy majority of the time. I think where the issue is complicated (which you briefly touched on) is when people are SO used to fatty, processed, unhealthy food that they crave that majority of the time and they literally do not like any veggies (and rarely eat fruit even if they do like it). I LOVE fried food (seriously my biggest weakness), but I know that if I even tried to eat it everyday, I'd get super sick of it and start to crave veggie curries, beans, etc. (My current obsession is saag, aka mustard greens and spinach.) But I do know people who actually eat really unhealthy (processed, fried, etc.) food everyday and that's what they continue to crave. You're absolutely right that everyone has a say in what they put into their bodies and I don't judge or comment on the way that other people eat. But I do think that some people might need to take some extra steps to eat healthy if they want to before they can truly do the intuitive eating thing? For example, I've never been a huge fan of beets, so I had to consciously try to eat them in ways that I didn't mind them - to this day, I never outright crave beets, but I will choose a beet burger at a vegan spot over the impossible burger because I've almost trained myself to like them? Lol, I don't know if this is making sense. It's almost like, if you're really used to eating unhealthy food and you're interested in incorporating more whole food plant based type foods, you might have to almost reset your taste buds and get yourself used to different flavors that are still good but a different type of good before you can truly do intuitive eating? Idk. Maybe I'm 100% wrong. This is a good topic though and I hope I don't come off as judgy or anything like that by this comment. Thanks for continuing to be awesome and one of my fav vegan youtubers!!

    • @tootily
      @tootily 5 лет назад +3

      Retraining your taste buds is totally a thing! At least in my own experience lol. I HATED beans before I was vegan. I thought the texture of any and every bean was absolutely repulsive, so I always avoided them. But when I went vegan I was like "Okay, I have to make myself tolerate beans since my protein has to come from somewhere." Now I LOVE beans and actually crave them, especially refried beans 😍 All of this is to say, it took time to get to this point, and this is just regarding ONE food. So yeah, it seems to me like someone who grew up eating mostly fast food/processed foods is going to take longer to be able to implement intuitive eating in a healthy, sustainable way for both their mind and body!

    • @DH-uw3us
      @DH-uw3us 5 лет назад

      I love a good beet burger at my favorite vegan spot too. They have beetball subs that are just as good and I wasn’t a fan of beets either until I tried those. One thing that helped me learn to eat more intuitively was to drink only water (or mainly water). I felt a lot more in tune with my body and what it wanted and really craved when I did that. Not sure why but I did.

    You said it’s not a big deal if you gain weight, and I think that definitely is true for someone within a normal weight range like you. But for someone like me who’s overweight, gaining even a small amount of weight is a big deal. Gain weight in my current situation would make me feel even more tired and less energetic. That’s why your channel is so inspiring to me as it helps me cook more mindfully and control my unhealthy cravings. So even though I think this mindset is great for someone like you, who already has their shit together when it comes to eating and is in a normal weight range, I think it can be harmful for some people. At the end of the day we’re all individuals, and what works for one won’t work for another, and you’re simply sharing your perspective. But it’s important to see it from all sides.

    This video could not have come at a better time. I’m recovering from anorexia nervosa and two weeks ago I went fully vegan(before all meals I made/had choice over were vegan but parents and psych made me still eat meat and eggs and stuff). I have made so much progress by going vegan and trying to honour not only my physical but mental cravings as well. I 100% support intuitive eating and wish there was more education about it in schools and stuff because it’s so easy to get sucked into diet culture and it’s honestly really refreshing and so helpful to find a RUclipsr who actually wants to educate themselves and is conscious of the influence they have. Your recipes have and continue to help me a lot, I’ve made so many and it reminds me that food is nourishment and has the ability to bring people together and by bringing joy and sharing culture and creating experiences(my family and I love them so much btw!). I agree. I feel like you have to eventually give up those processed junk foods in order to taste what real foods tastes like and crave them. Going vegan made me really appreciate the taste of vegetables. As an omnivore on the SAD diet there were only a few vegetables I could stand to eat and only when fixed in unhealthy ways to where they didn’t even taste like vegetables. Now I can eat many vegetables raw and be fine with it. And I actually crave things like broccoli at times, which was never the case before. But my taste buds had to adjust.

And the only thing that happened was that I preform a lot better at my sport, feel a lot less stressed, energetic and just overall happier. We should really start to feel ourselves again and stop occupy our thought with what society wants us to be.

    Im really glad you are talking about this. Fasting has helped me with this problem. I eat what i want . But i also give my body time to recover and time to digest. I try to listen to myself "dood what are you doing to your body?" If im going to eat a huge vegan burger with fries im going to give my body time to digest it. Instead of eating again 2 -3 hrs later. Cause that is usaully what we do. Eat a lot and then eat again and again and again. I think getting to know your body. Eating the foods you are craving , giving your body the nutrients it needs. But most importantly letting your body rest and recover what you are putting into it.

      I can't speak for Caitlin but personally I know what foods I like and crave on a regular basis (eg. what kinds of fats or carbs or proteins my body typically wants and enjoys), so I buy on that framework. If there's something very particular/unusual that I want, I can go and get that (so long as it's accessible), but this is rare, and for the most part I know the range of things that I want and enjoy most often and can make meals around that.

    I think this is good for someone like you given the history you have with food. For someone like me, I need more structure and to be more purposeful about planning my meals. There are many different ways to do veganism and if we aren’t careful and have a well planned vegan diet we could end up with deficiencies that lead to leaving the lifestyle altogether. I personally need to do a better job at eating more of a variety of whole plant foods because I tend to crave the same things and fix them out of convenience. But I know I am probably missing out on some of the other things I need. I take a multi vitamin just to cover my bases but I want to get as many nutrients from food as I can. I have seen that when I eat really healthy I tend to crave junk foods and vice versa so I try to listen to my body when that happens and try to get more balanced. But with the sweet tooth I have it can take a while to start to crave those healthier foods. So for me I know that I need a bit more structure.

  • @minime7375
    @minime7375 5 лет назад +1

    I appreciate that you started with that disclaimer because intuitive eating isn’t suitable for everyone. I think it’s particularly suitable for you since you were raised by vegetarian parents so you are in the habit of appreciating plant based foods, your taste buds are adjusted to that. I’ve been off meat since forever, i hate it, according to my mother i used to refuse it and spit it out since I was about 3. Not having any vegan friends or family though I always ate without much concern for nutrition facts etc. I know what I’m supposed to eat or what supplements I should take but I don’t because I simply forget to hold myself accountable. And a couple of days ago while groceries shopping I had an uncontrollable craving for pepperoni! So intuitive eating seems like bad idea for me (unless I suddenly decide to actually take my b12 , not just buy them...)

    Just EAT PEOPLE!!! The diet culture has created soooo much ADDED guilt and stress to our lives, that we can eat as healthy as we want and still not get where we want to be..simply because we are stressing the hell out of ourselves.

    I also worry about people who continue to eat things that are not good for their body because they don't know how to listen to their intuition and body. Nobody teaches us how to do it! My friend is lactose intolerant but doesn't want to give up dairy. It makes her so sick, but she tried going vegan and missed the dairy products too much to stick with it. Every time she eats it, she tells me how her stomach hurt so badly, but then a few days later she's eating ice cream again. Well, I understand a lot of the points that you made, and some I can relate to, but everybody is different, some people cant do intuitive eating, they have to learn how, you cant just start intuitive eating right after eating super unhealthy(overeating or under-eating), if you do you will listen to your brain instead of your body. When I binged, I could eat a gallon of ice cream, then a donut, then a hamburger. Being aware of what your eating is good, and to get to intuitive eating you might need a slightly restricted diet, so that you can learn to actually listen to your body, the problem is extreme diets, having rules isn't bad its what kind of rules, and also if one has a eating disorder or any bad relation with food they should prioritize there mental health first. Because if not then bad habits can start kicking in again (overeating or under-eating). Right now Im on a calorie deficit for health and aesthetic reasons, and Im taking it step by step so I don´t trigger going extreme on my diet and hate myself when Im not perfect or trigger my binging side, and while Im going through this process Im seeing a psychologist, so I also have somebody who can actually recognize if my state of mind is in a good place or not. Im definitely close to being able to eat intuitively, but to get there I have to restrict myself first.

    I haven't read the book yet but have listened to some interviews with Caroline. I've wasted SO much of my life for the past 40 years (I'm 53) obsessing about food and overly restricting. It has caused serious health issues. Like you, I am not vegan for weight loss reasons...I'm vegan for the animals...so I'm not quitting being vegan. BUT, I am loosening up my food "rules" and not ignoring hunger when my body is HUNGRY. No more of these overly restrictive versions of veganism! While I agree with the concept of intuitive eating, I feel like it would have made more sense back when humans were growing their own fruits and vegetables and eating from the Earth. Now that we have tons of processed foods with additives that make them addicting (also a lot of dairy which has addictive properties), the foods we eat create a cyclical pattern where we then crave them more. So I'm not sure that I agree that eating whatever your body craves would lead to a balanced lifestyle overall, but I think it's nice to think about food without strict guidelines and focus more on the enjoyment it brings to your life. It really is sad that so many people struggle with food related issues, myself included. It's such an integral part of our lives. We should just keep it simple and be grateful for it.

So far it has immesnely helped me eat intuitively, listen to my body and its signals, not restricting anything but still be mindful. I was obsessed with counting calories and I couldn't stop because I was so scared of losing control. That also caused binge attacks which stressed me out even more. One thing to remember is that when people don’t agree with your diet, they’re not automatically judging you or trying to control you. That’s always a dangerous assumption to make about others. Cause if you ever came across a flaw in your beliefs (diet or otherwise), you’d be unable to correct yourself. You’d just feel resentful of the other person cause you’ve already attributed to them a hostile motive.

    I agree that we should listen to our body more and eat what we are craving, however there are limits I think. My father passed away due to his poor unhealthy diet. He was eating so much and so badly that he got cancer 3 times and the third killed him. He was very poor when he was a kid and didn't have much food to eat, so becoming an adult he started eating a lot. It was a psychological reaction to his childhood. Probably if he agreed to see a specialist, he would have survived or maybe not. His death gave me a lot of anxiety and panic attacks. I started to feel so sick in my stomach and intestines as well that I had to check my blood and found out I had an inflamation that I could cure with a special diet. Vegan of course. I followed it for weeks, felt better, but lately I started to have reflux again. I understood it's all in my mind. The more I feel anxious, the more my intestines feel sick. I decided it is time to listen to my body and eat what I want to eat without feeling guilty it might ruin my intestins. My mind is ruining it, not the food. I will keep being vegan for ethical reasons till I die, but if I crave tomatoes for example, I will eat them although I shouldn't. Guess what? I haven't had reflux in a while now and that's because I decided it is time that my anxiety leaves me for good. I love food, I love eating and one day, I will be 100% fine and will enjoy my food as I did once. It is a matter of balancing everything, but mostly, it is a matter of forgiving ourselves and trying to be happy and face problems with a smile instead of tears. Thank you for your videos :-)

    I understand the appeal of intuitive eating and why it can be really good for people who have had issues with food in the past, but I don't think it's for everyone. People who doesn't usually eat healthy or try to do so will definetly not crave healthy foods. And in my own experience eventhough I try to eat healthy I struggle a lot with the most basic things like getting enough fruits and veggies and I know for sure if I were to eat intuitively I would not crave fruit and veggies or at least not frequently enough. I think something more middle ground would work better for most people, be aware of some basic healthy eating but not over planning or freaking too much about having something unhealthy here and there. Just taking into account health when you ask yourself what do you want to eat, and if you want chips you could have a little amount just to go along with a oterwise healthy meal.

      I absolutely agree. I think there should be a balance. People need to pay attention to how they feel. I might crave a bunch of cookies but I know if I eat too many I won’t feel good afterwards. This has happened to me many times. Sometimes giving in to cravings just makes things worse because I can see it spiraling out of control. If I ate intuitively I know I would probably feel like crap. So I know that I need to make sure I have a balance of the things I want and the things I know I need to eat.

      That it is literally what intuitive eating says. Find a balance between what your brain and body want. So what you both are saying agrees 100% with intuitive eating. It is called gentle nutrition, where your are still mindful what you eat but without obsessing or rigid rules. It’s all about finding a balance between mental and physical health.

    Tldr: I eat small portions or I get sick. Someone who puts less on their plate shouldn't influence you because it might not be about being "thin."
    This is so interesting. I have started to eat really small portions because I have some problems with my stomach. But I eat more often because of that. It's been annoyingly interesting/tough to find what works for me. But I would hate for someone to look at my plate and unconsciously think they need to eat less. To clarify: when I say stomach problems, I mean pain and nausea not chub. I have some chub too but that's not a problem. Sometimes I'll eat like a half cup to a cup of food when I'm eating with my family. Or I'll eat a couple bites of my meal at a restaurant and take the rest home. But I'll eat more in a much shorter timeframe than most people. But I find that it makes me eat much more intuitively. Moral of the story: eat in a way that works for you and try to catch when you might unconsciously judge yourself because someone eats differently than you. 😋

    I am super interested in intuitive eating but how does it work with meal prepping or grocery shopping every week? How do you know what to shop for for the week if you’re winging it day by day? I appreciate the f*ck out of this video!!

    Hell yes! I started to really eat intuitively 1.5 years ago and for the first time in my life I'm actually enjoying green smoothies and salads, am able to eat a small portion and be satisfied even without dessert BECAUSE I am also enjoying a whole bar of chocolate, burgers, third servings and 3 desserts at times without hating myself for that.
