  • Don Bradley is one of the funniest Mormon historians I know. In our first conversation with Don, we’ll talk about my first memory of Don, which deals with the timing of Fanny Alger’s marriage/affair with Joseph Smith. Was Fanny pregnant? Don Bradley thinks it is a strong possibility. Check out our conversation….

"Jaw-dropping" , "mind-blowing" , virtually "transcendent" , inspiring & touching , ... all appropriate descriptions of this interview or the content therein ! [I'm a patreon supporter and have listened to the entire 2plus hrs interview.]
Rick & Don, It is as though you two have opened up a giant clam, and exposed pearl(s) of great price! Perhaps God is ministering as much or more to me directly as the substance of your conversation, ... I will be absorbing this more than again. Thank you, Bless you.
    Doug in Tucson.

Sorry it’s a monthly charge to watch this. It seems very interesting. There are other sites that have no fee. I like to support through patreon when I can but it all adds up. Thanks for what you do show.

I guess it is time for another reminder. I don't expect everyone to agree with me or my guests, but I won't put up with anti-Mormon comments, especially if they are off topic.
Disagreement is welcome so long as it is respectful. Anti-Mormon comments will be deleted and commenters banned. I've stated this several times, but apparently I have people who aren't aware of the policy, so I am stating it again.
Just a reminder, I don't agree with everything Joseph did. People can disagree so long as they are not disagreeable.

I don't agree with all of your/your guests' opinions but I support your right to express them. I am also thankful for the moderation of Anti-Mormon comments as they seem to be rampant on small channels discussing LDS/Mormon topics.

@@007rabbit7 I don't agree with all my guests opinions either, but I think respectful dialogue is a benefit for all. I learn a ton from my guests and I hope others do as well.
It should be noted that I also moderate/ban obnoxious pro-Mormons too. I want this channel to be mostly neutral in its approach to various topics. I just hope people can be respectful in disagreement. I can't stand trolls either pro or anti.

I can imagine there will be "anti-mormon" reaction, as here (in Don) we have a brilliant witness whose own profound [re-]conversion to mormonism (covered further into interview than just this episode) is too much for haters of truth.

@@GospelTangents / Good, good moderation of inflammatory comments, I support you in that, Rick. There is SOOO much vile (vomit-like hatred) anti-mormon stuff seething on the internet! Hope I dont get banned as a pro-Joseph Smith commenter.

This will be long, but I feel I have a right to share an opinion as a person who has many different ways of looking at this story than you all have, (though I could be wrong too.) If this doesn't follow your guidelines no problem, ask me, and I will take it down, (or you can.) Fanny Alger is my great great great Aunt. Fanny's brother John and his first wife Sarah, had Samuel, who had a son Granville, who had my grandmother Elaine, who had my mother, who had me. I have always been fascinated by her story. I am always shocked at the notion that this was either a marriage or an affair. In my opinion it was neither simply by using my own logic. I also grew up babysitting and taking care of homes in Utah as a teenager, as Fanny Alger first did for Joseph and Emma, which is how they initially all were involved. That is a very intimate job, and fathers in that position back then when I did it, were one of two things... majority of them were good Mormon men, devoted fathers, respectable husbands, who had nothing but a respectful awareness of me, without ever crossing any line. Not even a hint of it. Then there were one or two, who did cross a line, and it was a tough situation. But one thing was constant. I was a teenage girl, just doing my job. I was never in the power position that is for sure. No teenage girl is. So with that disclaimer in place.... Seems to me, Fanny was a teenage girl, whose parents followed a man, and that man requested their daughter work for him and his wife in his home. Then Joseph told Fanny's parents he wanted to marry their young daughter based on "falling in love with her." Polygamy was a great way to make that happen. It's always slid in as a side note, the added commentary that Fanny was very "pretty, ie.'comely,' or" hot," whatever. Which allows us all to assume apparently her appearance also played a part. This has been noted by many sources, not just yours. Her kindness is also something that was noted as well if you dig deep in the archives. But her appearance seems to be most notable. Please feel free to read into that what you will, as I welcome that discussion. Regarding her age, and no one focusing on that, because.... "That's the way things went back then...." I understand your point. I also remember my great grandfather Granville, and how simple he was. Obedient. As were the women in my family back then. All easy going, do as they're told, don't get into any trouble. Good kind people. My simple family, and my pretty young aunt, were brought into a religion where a predator made what he wanted to have happen, happen. Young women were manipulated into these positions much easier back then, so how this can be assessed in any other way baffles me. The story about them asking her parents then asking her? Again....in my opinion, it sounds like that in and of itself was an artful manipulation of simple people and it worked... until Fanny Alger left. And on her death bed she made a point of saying she would not discuss the relationship. I can only assume what that means, based on the women in my family. Kind hearted and not wanting to cause anyone any problems. There were most likely a lot of people she loved who were comforted by their church. I am guessing she did not want to tear something apart as an old woman who doesn't want to hurt anyone. But she did leave Joesph Smith and married someone else. And she left "the church" and did not consider herself a Mormon after she left him. The fact that she was baptized Mormon, by the Mormons, after her death is so sad to me. She made her choice very clear while still alive. That said, I am a filmmaker and I will be telling this story in my own way, one day. Knowing this story can never be truly verified one way or the other, it is fair for us all to share an opinion and this one is my opinion. I write and make films in a fair way and am careful not to seek out hurting any Mormons even though I am not one. That said, I won't deny something that seems very obvious to me.

Nicole - Fascinating! I find your thoughts intriguing. And it's cool that you're related. I don't know if you know that late in her life Fanny became a spiritual medium and your g-g-g-grandfather John was excommunicated from the LDS church and became a follower of spiritualism. A lot happened back then, and it will be interesting to piece more and more of it together.

It's insane how the story has changed over the past few years. Joseph Smith never had children with any other woman but Emma and the barn was a rumor started by someone who hated Joseph. There was never any intimate relationship in any barn. I feel like none of this should have come out until all the facts were straightened out. But better late than never

Are you saying Oliver Cowdery "hated Joseph"? It was him who testified of the "dirty, nasty, filthy affair."

So, at this point, it does bother me about this “secret” marriage. It seems more adulterous to me. However, I was not there and Joseph is not here to defend himself. Therefore, I will refrain from making a judgment. I only know The Book of Mormon IS the word of God. I also see the Devine inspiration evident in this church. So, for now, I will walk by faith.

IT did not happen. Joseph Smith did not have any other wife other than Emma. BELIEVE Joseph. If someone claims Joseph Smith lied about affairs or other wives, yet believe he told the truth about everything else, they are deluded. Joseph Smith did not have any affairs nor did he condone plural marriage. He was killed by his own brethren over this, to which they then rewrote history after his death.
