They either opened for Suicidal Tendencies or Crumbsuckers at Irving Plaza. I was in line and Eddie overhears someone talking to me saying they are in a band called, "Euthanasia." I didn't know what the word meant (14 or 15 at the time) and said something like, "Youth in Asia, what part Asia?" People around me laughed, and Eddie Sutton, who is walking passed the line stops and has a laugh but explains to me what euthanasia is. I was a Leeway fan but had no idea who this dude was...until he took the stage. Been a Leeway fan for life.
Eddie Sutton you are a legend, by far the best Hardcore vocalist ever. Leeway are the best Hardcore band ever. I have always loved the sarcasm you bring to the table. keep it real.
3:06, don't ever forget what the fuck Hardcore stood for. When those individuals came together to express themselves at a show, those individuals became a unit of brothers and sisters of the same intentions and of the same heart. If you want to be a part of Hardcore, you gotta live it. May this culture live long and prosper.
I saw Leeway between Sick Of it All and the Bad Brains in Reseda, CA..1989. The Country Club. You guys hit it outta the park that night. That was awesome!! I'll never forget that show.
Yes, I was there too. The show was sold out but I managed to get a ticket outside from someone who had an extra. Fucking missed SOIA but got in right when Leeway hit the stage. A great fucking show!!!
Great interview. The David Bowie answer was great "sometimes we forget where this music comes from...". "This music is born of misfits and outcasts".... Saw them at the Roxy in NYC. Bad Brains, Circle Jerks, Leeway, and Living Colour. All 4 were great.
LEE-WAY has been one of my Favorite NYHC bands since I bought their Enforcer demo at Some Records back in mid 80’s. I musta seen LEE-WAY live 20-25 times since I first saw them at CBGB in 1986. The old Ritz (1986 with Crumbsuckers and again at Ritz with Bad Brains) But I always loved when they played CB’s.
Leeway is one band that any time I speak to someone about music, they come up. Eons before their time as far as sound and the music is still as awesome now when I hear as it was when I was in my teens. There are so few bands that have albums out these days where every track is great. Leeway was one of this first bands I can remember that had that!
Not lying,he played New Orleans to maybe 20 people. Jumped and danced around like it was a packed arena. Miss our talks Eddie. You literally had a hand in saving my life during a dark time. RIP
Peace!! I really felt your work, bro... Leeway is permanent on all of my playlists...no such thing as playing just one or 2 songs...whole albums get played!!
All the way from New York to my shit hole town wigton in england.born to expire.i blasted it loud Eddie boy awesome album.i fucking loved you guys.all my mates were playing Dio and shit.but I was rocking fucking leeway.peace and love to ya dude.
Oh, my god. Rock Hotel Jane Street was everything! I used to bring the liquor license. Then, I took over the guest list gate…hah…funnest times. Greatest shows ever in that ballroom.
that individually he was talking about is definitely what bands need to show more of nowadays, one of the reasons why I love leeway is cause they have a sound that is their own. and many of the bands from back in the day brought their own style to their sounds. I listen to newer hardcore bands now because I am a young cat and dig a lot of them as well, but I feel like many of them conform to the same formula where everything just sounds the same after a while.
Leeway was great and all the guys in it were awesome - Seems like yesterday we were all in our late teens early twenties standing on the corner. Eddie looks the same except he lost a few teeth. Who can say they traveled the world making great music and great times? Don’t judge.
Eddie is clean obviously - and so what if he had an addiction? He worked hard and cleaned up. I’d rather follow his example than sit there pointing my finger at someone else - you think you’re better than this guy? He’s lived a thousand times more of a life than you. I’d be willing to bet money on that.
Drugs are not your friend. Leeway are legends in the NYHC scene but my boy looks like he went a couple rounds too many with the Hanson Brothers from Slap Shot and we all know Ed don't play hockey.
A great dude. Lots of the new jack, metalcore/screamo bands have real douchey, "holier than thou", rockstar attitudes. The kind of attitude that comes from getting everything handed to you on a silver platter. The old guys, the real hardcore guys, like Eddie, never do.
The expression on his face suggests that he might have had a stroke. At the same time the lack of teeth is common for crackheads. We'll never know. But it's sad anyway.
RIP Eddie! You were such an incredible guy. Had time for me & many others & your music was/is incredible!

Literally saw him play in front of 30 kids last night and we all ate it up.

Such a bummer to lose two great giants of the metal/punk world. Rest in Power Eddie and Mike ⚡🤘🤘

I brought sand to the beach that night. And it was still one of the best show I ever been to.
Met Eddie last night. Solid dude, looking better, sounds good. He took the time to say what up to everyone.
Leeway was my first hardcore show in 1993. I was 17 and from this day i wanted to be a metalhead no more. Thanks😁

Unisound-actually made Reading good for something. Really miss it
no lie, Sutton is one of the best front men of all time, as he says, be an Individual.

Eddie Sutton!!! You mean Eddie Pomponio... Sad to see my brother this way, guess he couldnt get over his addictions..
Eddie is clean obviously - and so what if he had an addiction? He worked hard and cleaned up. I love Leeway but was Eddie doin' drugs for a long time? He 's looking like that.
The expression on his face suggests that he might have had a stroke. At the same time the lack of teeth is common for crackheads. We'll never know. But it's sad anyway.
Yeah, Eddie looks like he's been through the ringer.
He has lung cancer.
