@The Progressive Brit I'm the "average person" and I gotta say, the men in the Golden era looked amazing. I can stare at their bodies all day (if that doesn't sound weird)
I'm not into bodybuilding competitions at all, but just from the pictures in this vid, the golden era guys looked athletic, like they could still run 3000m in 12 min, the modern guys don't look like they could do that at all.
I don't know why people want that in bodybuilding. Why not just go and look at Athletes for the 'athletic' look then? You know, like Lebron James or football players. They have actual 'athletic' physiques.
Golden era is called “Golden” for a reason. I’d rather watch three incredible, unique competitors battle it out with crafted routines than 30 guys rushing the same 5 poses...
Golden era 70's-80's : aesthetic Greek gods, inspirational icons, everybody wants to become like them. Modern: gaint titans,no aesthetics, not healthy, nobody wants to become like them.
The physiques today border on cartoonish and they are very similar. The Golden era BBer's each had a unique body...Posing was much better during during the golden era they could do what they wanted even though there were basic poses
Joe T They knew, and avoided it at all costs. I remember how Zane used to say that if he got a bit over 200-210 his lines would suffer and that he did not like his physique, because he would lose his symmetry.
Great analysis Nick.... I would add two things that would favor the Golden Era..... First of all the competitors and bodybuilders served to inspire both national and worldwide movements toward legitimizing strength training and bodybuilding as well incorporating the sport into the mainstream... Secondly, it's clear that the Golden Era bodybuilders, many of whom are still alive, are clearly out living today's mass monsters.... So there has been a change in culture from the early days which inspired people to pursue the healthy pursuit of athletic conditioning, to the current bodybuilders who are basically inspiring people to sacrifice their health to push the envelope as far as they can, with little regard for their health....
Thankfully there is the classic physique these days...while I respect the men’s open competitors I don’t aspire to look like any of them. Arnold’s look in the 70’s is what got me lifting weights and bodybuilding in the first place.
Physiques today are bigger but not better than generations back. Poses now are not as focused on because it is not an artform like it used to be. My opinion. I enjoy your content and attention to history and detail. Keep up the great work.
+Jimmys C. S. W. Its this generations new retarded slang. In the 90's people used dumb made up words like Bodashous, but it died out as will this GOAT. So I wouldn't worry about it.
Golden Era builders looked like sculptures come to life. Modern day builders look like monstrosities. Chemicals have simply gone too far. There is no comparison. Thank goodness for histories recordings and channels like yours for preserving all of the great Golden Era moments.
Those were unique, quality physiques back then, in the 70's. Those fellas would pose these modern guys UNDER the stage. Arnold's transitions, Sergio's overhead victory pose, (or whatever you call that on he was famous for), and Ed Corney's routines? NO COMPARISON! FORGET ABOUT IT! That was art!!
Here's the acid test - back in the day you could cover up the head of any bodybuilder and know who it was from their physique. Today - they all look like the same bloated muscle bags. No striations, no separation, no vacuum, no idividuality, no appeal.
Back in the golden era before social media, bodybuilding was somewhat sacred and had a respectable amount of exclusivity. So when you got exposed to it, it was amazing. But with social media, it's not "sacred" or exclusive anymore, and I feel it takes away from it a bit. Personally...I think there will NEVER be another legend, like Arnold.
If I can rock the Classic physique or the modern physique I’d go with the classic but I really do enjoy seeing how big these modern body builders can get! The only issue is the guts that gotta go away
Nick I am a old school bodybuilder but today's bodybuilders have more opportunities I'm glad of that is more competitions to compete in more endorsements and the number one thing these guys can really make a living competing as a professional bodybuilding I have issue with the size the bubble gut because it seems like there is no concern for conditioning Aesthetics that the old school bodybuilders were known for but nevertheless this is a new day time and age social media RUclips Facebook Instagram among the others are taking bodybuilding to a whole nother level and making it possible 4 people all over the world to compete and be involved in the sport thank you for this great video
Mike Mentzers said he on the first photo of him is so tight, even at the side obliques it looks almost photo shopped 💪👌You never see anything close these days.
the fact that there is only one organization is for the worse. I would go to see the AAU Mr. America is it were close by and then also see the IFBB and WBBG Mr. America which were usually held in NY at the time. Usually all within a week apart from each other.
That's what I was thinking but he would lose mens open. Not sure of his weight maybe he could make 212 and place top 3 but would definitely win classic
I'd rather go for the classic era.... Steve Reeves, Bill Pearl, Jim Haislop, Reg Park, John Grimek, Larry Scott.... they all looked more human to me... :-)
The golden era was the foundation for the greatness that was the 90’s and the work in progress that is today’s bodybuilding. Bring back the separation.
Serge Nubret and Frank Zane were by far the most aesthetic bodybuilders of all time. Franco Columbu revolutionized techniques in a way all current competitors must recognize and give thanks for. Nobody ever worked harder for a goal than Lou Ferrigno, to stack over 300lbs of muscle on his 6' 5" frame, to appear as heavily muscled as his peers in seeking the elusive Olympia title. Sergio Oliva meticulously crafted wonderful posing routines to perfectly demonstrate the symmetry, proportion, and definition that were his trademarks. And yet there is a reason why every top modern-era bodybuilder is compared to just one man. Simply the best. Mike Mentzer and Boyer Coe in early 1980 claimed that Schwarzenegger's methods were obsolete and failing. Arnold ended his five-year retirement to put them to shame for his 6th Olympia title. Growing up in Burbank in the 60s and 70s, the son of a firefighter (many of whom in those days were power-lifters as a natural avocation for their careers), I had the opportunity to see all of these men and more during the "golden era", and it was truly that. They gravitated to Vince Gironda's gym in North Hollywood, or Gold's in Venice; so it was easy to catch the best of them at a workout. They trained and functioned as friends and co-workers, saving the adversarial behaviors for competitions. Many worthwhile lessons could be learned by anybody watching them train. I felt spoiled then to have had the opportunity. I still do.
Oh, Nick this is an everlasting debate. In the 80s everyone preferred the 60s and 70s In the 90s everyone preferred the 70s and 80s etc. But talking about modern bodybuilding I habe to say that the quality went DOWN big time after Ronnie Coleman and especially Jay Cutler went.
AFCA - World Bodybuilding Archive Jay Cutler is one of the steps in the downward spiral of open bodybuilding. Awful physique. Lee Haney was the last great Mr. Olympia for his career. Ronnie started out good and then took it down the extreme path, as did Dorian toward the end.
In the seventies everybody preferred the 60s the 50s.. I know I was there.. Like I said earlier . Arnold and Mike mentzer were too big according to the fans of the 60s and the 50s
for me personly...the asthetics are more importend than brutal mass...the overall shape should much more count in a competition...and the posing routine. mass with class...like Lee Priest for example
It is really no contest, the Golden Era was much better. While I agree that is a subjective judgment, best built men are not the ones who ingest the most steroids into their systems and achieve the biggest size. Symmetry and proportion should be considered as well.
I appreciate that there were less competitors back then. Would much rather see a more poses and longer stage time for the top guys who are the most legitimate threats to win.
For me I wish it could be a balance between the two eras, both business wise and physique. No doubt social media has expanded the overall popularity of bodybuilding, but I always loved the magazines as well with the great photos, the articles by your favorite competitor etc. It seemed more personal and was def more professional that most YT sites (this one DEFINITELY excluded, as it's awesome and Nick does a great job). Physique wise I wish you could take the top half of the GE bodybuilders, and the legs of the modern bodybuilders, and add them together. I mean, look at the 1980 Olympia, no question that Arnold had some of the worst legs, but even the other competitors, compared to today, their legs weren't exactly great. I think Lee Haney came the closest to what I would love to see competitors look like today. I mean, you take Lee Haney and put him in the 70's, I think he beats Arnold every time with the possible exceptions of '71 & '74. Haney to me wins abs, legs, and forearms hands down. I think he loses arms and chest. And back, calves and shoulders are about equal, and honestly Haney's back might be a slight favorite. I was comparing a shot of the back double biceps pose of Haney and Arnold, and Haney's arms don't match up with Arnold, but other than that I give traps and lats to Haney, with shoulders about a tie. On the flip side, put Haney in today's world and I think he competes well. Might not win given the "size counts for nearly everything" mentality, but he's competitive. And there's no question he's the best defined of any current competitor, although he wouldn't have the size. This is just my opinion of course, but Haney beats Phil Heath in abs (no bubblegut for Haney), and forearms easy. Chest I give to Haney, although that's up for debate as I don't like the "circle" chest look that Heath has. To me the chest looks better if it has that straight line look. Arms go to Heath. Back is interesting because, again comparing the back double-bicep, size and density go to Heath, but I think definition goes to Haney. And legs are the same as the back, with a slight advantage to Heath.
I prefer the Golden era aesthetics, but as Nick mentioned in the video, there have been certain improvements in modern bodybuilding. I believe the best of bodybuilding has yet to come, perhaps Classic Physique will be a part of that better future.
The biggest difference I notice between modern and golden age are the size of the thighs of today's mass monsters. The slightly slimmer thighs make for a bit nicer aesthetic look. Just my two cents from a 55-year-old lifter. Really like your channel.
many of the golden era poses can't be done today due to big gut, also the back looks like V in golden era but today it look like Y shape. there is no aesthetics today.
Every era has something to offer and should be appreciated - today’s technology offers unprecedented access for those who are curious and for the hard core fans but in so doing takes away the mystique of the old days.
To me, bodies were built MUCH better back in the day. We've gone from Aesthetics, Symmetry, Proportion, Definition, vacuums, V-taper into small waists, etc, to a cartoonish freak show with large midsections. The level of conditioning required nowadays is so depleting, it's dangerous. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone in the 60s, 70s, or 80s, collapsing on stage with severe cramps from dehydration. You had to be well conditioned back then, sure. But not as dangerously depleted as today's competitors are required to be. Also, the posing was definitely better in the Golden Era. Hell, even the Relaxed pose looked way better in the Golden Era. It all started with Dorian with his huge jump in size in 93. That was the beginning of the end as far as I'm concerned. Especially after he won in 94 when Shawn was the clear winner to me. Bloated guts had begun and were being rewarded. I'm just glad that we at least have Classic Physique now. It just kinda sucks that it's thought of as not that big of a deal by some. Some might even refer to them as... oh what was it..... Weekend Warriors was it? smh. I know people will strongly disagree with me on this. That's fine.
Goal then: Look like Superman
Goal now: Look like a monster that Superman has to fight
Another goal to compete in bigger gut
and sups wins
The head on today's bodybuilders look like it doesn't belong on the body
Haha this is true af
Hahahaaa LOL so true
They used to have hair.
Because they took less steroids
yeh, and their dicks use to not be that small
Chris M You used to be able to tell the white guys from the black guys. Now they're all the same color.
Cuz there was less drugs
Chris M steroid abuse
Golden Era: Everyone looks aesthetic/appealing to the eye.
Modern Bodybuilding: Eeryone looks like a science project gone wrong.
ry4nx 100% agree with you everybody looks like a mass produced monster from a factory
Golden Age Legends that exists, its called o2 gym
@The Progressive Brit.
To the average person watching this video then.
there's always an insecure guy like you trying to express this logic
ry4nx a genetic experiment gone wrong
@The Progressive Brit I'm the "average person" and I gotta say, the men in the Golden era looked amazing. I can stare at their bodies all day (if that doesn't sound weird)
Art, symmetry and proportion VS a bunch of lumps called muscles thrown together resembling giant throbbing tumors.
Jon Flynn physique doesn't have nearly as much size, and no legs, so it's not nearly as skilled

Coming from goku slow bulky fuck at ascended saiyen
Legend I agree. They are TOO big today and their stomachs pooch out too much. They are not very athletic looking. They look more freikish today.
Exactly how I see it. Art vs freak show.

I wouldn't want to look like any of the top bodybuilders now. I like the more athletic functional look of the golden era.
They have the physiques of statues of gods not athletes.
I don't know why people want that in bodybuilding. Why not just go and look at Athletes for the 'athletic' look then? You know, like Lebron James or football players. They have actual 'athletic' physiques.
You probably won't even if you tried
Jon Flynn mo is black that's all I see
Don't worry. You never will.
Arnold is the standard that will always be used for comparison.
I think that Mike Mentzer and Frank Zane looked better, and that Arnold looked best in Predator, which he cut weight for
Rocky balboa
Mentzer looked incredible compared to the garbage of today
Arnold is ok...Frank Zane is the pinnacle of a Greek God.
I believe that classic physique is setting standards for the big boys, no more bubble guts!
I'd take the asthetic Arnold look over the massive and insanely ripped Phil Heath any day.
If its called "the Golden Era" i think we all know the awnser
What do u mean?
@@thomashenderson6995 *GOLDEN* Era. I think it's pretty obvious

Gym Carrey how does it happen to people?
Gym Carrey dude...your name deserves a comment from Nick! You, sir....are a boss😁
Human growth hormone taken orally accumulates mainly in the gut causing increase in intestinal size and hence the bubble gut.
Nah, it's insulin. If it were HGH, it wouldn't disappear when they retire.
I love these comments 😂😂
Golden era is called “Golden” for a reason.
I’d rather watch three incredible, unique competitors battle it out with crafted routines than 30 guys rushing the same 5 poses...
Biggest difference, people wanted physiques like the golden era guys. Today not so much.

The Golden era had a heroic look. Modern day they look like deformed monstrosity’s
The posing back then was sooooooooo much better!
Remember when bodybuilders had calves?
Prob because genes had more to say back then since they didnt have alot of drugs
The Golden Era guys seem to have more functional muscles (if that makes sense) ...some of the new guys looked like a pumped up T-Rex
The physiques today border on cartoonish and they are very similar. The Golden era BBer's each had a unique body...Posing was much better during during the golden era they could do what they wanted even though there were basic poses
golden era bodybuilders probably wouldn't even know what a bubble gut was if you asked them back then
Since Lui Marco invented the term a couple years ago that's a pretty safe bet.
Joe T

I know people will strongly disagree with me on this. That's fine.
Nick - how about a video on the history of the prize money in the Olympia. How it has grown.
Thanks for the video. That crazy to see the comparison from the Arnold days and today.
