What I love most about this interview is that while she was honest about her parents imperfections, she honored them greatly and recognized her own need to follow through with Scriptural forgiveness.

Even the most aware new parent will make mistakes. Just remember that when you do, tell your child you're sorry and ask for forgiveness. It's hard and embarrassing, but it's amazing in the results.
It doesn't matter how old they are, to or how long ago it happened. You are setting an example and if they are still young, they will very likely forgive easily.
The longer you wait (like into adulthood) the more likely it is they will want to express their pain, and you will have to sit quietly and accept it. But it will be the beginning of a breakthrough.
My dad would write me notes and put them under my pillow saying he was sorry. It was powerful. It still makes me cry to think about it.
You absolutely right about that. My parents were loving and always had my back and my siblings. There both deceased now, but I've never felt a void that I was never loved by them or suffered issues in that regard.

Her father was a well known preacher. That does not make abandoned. These situations of not have ing a parent all the time is test beleivers of the Sovereign power of the Lord that we are the be content and for the g that we feel is lacking He is there for us. All for the purpose of our salvation.
This is such a valuable testimony. Thank you for being brave and not hiding away, Ruth. I have been through divorce three times, and being a multiple divorcee is a shameful, isolating thing to endure in the church. The few times I've been able to speak over my heart pounding and confide my testimony to a sister in the church, it was met with false sympathy followed by gossip and condemnation. Very few have been able to understand the impact on a little girl's heart of a father who is angry and unloving, or that a broken woman tends to attract predatory men. It's like starting life with a house left unlocked instead of protected, all the doors and windows broken open for anyone to enter as they please, and the owner of the house doesn't know she has rights or that the home is valuable.
After going through more betrayal and adultery than I thought I could endure, my brother's reaction was always silence, indifference...even blame, which only reinforced the cycle. The men who mattered most to my heart simply did not value it. When I finally surrendered my deep desire for love and marriage to Jesus, when I finally took ownership of my role and my sin, repenting and trusting Him for a heart of singleness if that was what He wanted...when He glued my ears to audio Bible and washed my soul with his Word... The love of Yeshua our Messiah changed everything. To everyone who extends grace and love to each woman at the well, you are being Jesus and healing broken hearts.
@Beth H. As a fairly new believer I literally never tell other Christians about my life. Many appear to be quite judgmental and not trustworthy with such heartfelt truth. My hope is in Christ, my bridegroom and brother, in my Father's coming Kingdom. Thank you for your comments. I remind myself that the Samaritan woman at the well was the first person to whom Jesus revealed himself to be the Messiah. That showed me how He feels about me.

You don't sound healed, peaceful, or transformed. You sound bitter and self-centred, gossiping and attacking people who didnt give you the sympathy you wanted when you divorced again and again.
Basically, no body cares if you have divorced how many times. That is your own business. Nobody is interested. But you feel that everybody should have cared for you because you had a divorce. Lady, people have a life and purpose other than just wasting their whole life on comforting people who divorce many times. People all have their own difficulty and business to tend to. People need to help the starving, the homeless, the abused children, the sick, the dying, the orphans in war zones, and the prosecuted missionaries who spread the gosoel other than just focusing all the energy on you. But becuz of your divorce (which nobody except for yourself cares), you feel inferior while you want to be superior. In addition, you feel the whole world owe it to you to comfort you because you had a divorce. So, you have to speak to all the strangers in the universe to attack those who didnt meet your expectationl while lifting yourself up.
Notice that the woman who met Jesus at the well, she sinned and slept with many men BEFORE she met Jesus. And AFTER she met Jesus, she did not do it anymore. Also, she did not go around attacking people who did not give her the sympathy for her sins, rather, she just spread the good news about Jesus and led many to Jesus.
But you divorced again and again AFTER you had already become a Christian (since you said you were in church), NOT BEFORE. Also, not sure what kind of repent is it that you sound so bitter and self-righteous in gossipping and attacking those who didnt give you sympathy through your divorce. Your reaction was sooo different from the woman who has truly met Jesus at the well. Please dont compare youself to her. You two reacted so differently to meeting Jesus.
In short, lady, whether you have divorced or not or how many times has nothing to do with others. Nobody is interested or cares. It is only you who care and feel bitter becuz that has stopped you from being the adored and admired one at church, but you want to hold that high status at church. Most people have manny other more important responsibilities to attend to. They dont care about your divorce. Stop gossiping and attacking about other people at church for not supporting you for your divorce and not holding you up like a star. They probably dislike you for many other reasons. Dont blame everything on your divorce. Many people get hurt at church even though they have never had a divorced or slept around etc.
Testimony does not live in the self-praising lips, but in action that bears fruits. What fruits have you born for the Kingdom of God? People who have truly met Jesus will be recognized by the fruits they bear--you must have known this since you spend days and nights listening to the Bible. Why are you feeling so self-righteous?
So you have divorced 3 times after meeting Jesus. So now you are ok to be single. (Most people getting old will accept that even if they have not met Jesus.) Who cares? Why are Christian's testimony all so self-centred and pathetic?

The devil comes to kill, steal and destroy but Jesus came to give us life. Whilst we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. God is a good good Father! He doesn't need our forgiveness as He has been nothing but good. We owe Him everything!
The bottom line is that children of highly successful parents often suffer in similar ways. Whether the parent is a famous preacher or politician, the children typically come second to the parent’s career. In order to reach the very highest rung on the ladder of success you have to be singularly focused, at the expense of your personal life.
In the case of Ruth Graham, she’s telling us that her father’s absence was problematic, as was her mother’s emotional distance. I admire and respect Ruth’s honesty and courage, along with her faith.

Her honesty abt failed marriages helps so many including myself. I felt like a stranger in church having been divorced but everything was so couples oriented glad many churches getting their eyes open to minister to hurting single people
My father died when I was very young. I had abandonment issues too and ended up looking for men to take his place - to feel secure, to feel loved. I can totally relate to her.
Lost my Dad young too. Just beating myself up this morning for looking for love in all the places when I was young. Memories still come up and haunt me, even though I've been happily married over 37 years.

I have been married three times.
During this last marriage, when I found myself living halfway around the world to a man who actually had no interest in me, I realized that I had for some reason, married the type of man who would abandon me, the same way my father did, as even though he was a pastor, he was always available for the church, but not for me.
For those calling her out for 4 marriages, I think the lesson here is that if you don’t fix the cores issues, you’re gonna keep making the sane mistakes. That’s what happened to her and she’s sharing her story so you don’t go through that cycle as long as she did. Take notes instead! I think is so brave of her to share her story. Can you imagine the hate she gets from people for having 4 marriages? But she still shares her testimony to give us wisdom so we don’t go the same route.

Ruth struggled with forging God for not meeting her expectations.
The fact is we don’t deserve anything at all from God, yet He gives us the gift of salvation, the gift of faith when we repent - even repentance is a gift.
Most importantly he gives us the gift of himself in the Lord Jesus. He lavishes grace upon grace on us and every spiritual gift.

The family members of Billy Graham, and particularly his wife, Ruth, are to be commended for their selflessness. Billy Graham was a gift to the world; without his wife's selfless attitude, perhaps we would not have had a Billy Graham. I hope that somehow, Ruth will have restored to her, the many things that she could not have in her childhood. And consider the many one-parent families, in which children are deprived of one parent because of divorce. Many children experience the insecurity Ruth speaks about. I pray that Ruth will take confidence in the Lord who loves her and who has always loved her and consider the many children who are raised in terribly dysfunctional homes, and suffer tremendously because of it.
This is her story of a lack of intimate connection with her parents growing up...feeling abandoned is the result and usually the child grows up and tries to subconsciously correct the vacuum with similar people and does the same thing or the complete opposite thing to their children. Basic psychology... the Holy Spirit is the only one who can fill the vacuum. His love heals the broken hearted but it takes time...thanks for the video

Paul's words, "His strength is made perfect in my weakness" is truly applicable here. Am sure the parents did their best. They presented the gospel to the world even in their weaknesses. Strange how a child can carry so much hurt even in the most loving home. Only God will unveil this mystery.
This happens a lot when people are busy whether in ministry or in regular job. They tend to focus more on career than family and marriage. Many kids are wounded because parents are not present emotionally and some are not present physically. This busyness cause havoc on marriages too. Spouses feel not cared and loved and valued because the other spouse is too busy in business or job or ministry.
My father was a preacher who really looked up to Reverend Graham. Our family was also conditioned to never show any negative emotions. My father preached and thought that all emotions by women, was evil . He had no love, but would preach the truth from the pulpit. It wasn't until after I had my last child that my father died, and about 10 years after that that I could even begin to contemplate the need to forgive him for all the mixed messages from my childhood. I can relate very much to so much of her story. I'm so grateful to hear that " forgiveness" isn't a magical wave of the wand, but is given by the grace of Jesus, and is sometimes a long process.
Eliza, that is so true. I don't believe that forgiveness is unconditional. If one person wrongs another person, and fails to admit that they have acted wrongly, the wronged person is not in a position to forgive, though he or she may fervently wish to do so. The best they can do is to not retalite. However if the wrongdoer admits their wrong and seeks forgiveness, then the wronged person should be willing and happy to forgive. But the one who did the wrong should not only ask the wronged person for their forgiveness, but also ask God for His forgiveness, because all sin is against God. Even God's forgiveness is not unconditional. John writes (to believers). 'IF we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness' (1Jn.1v9)
Unbelievers cannot be forgiven by God until they repent of their unbelief and accept the crucified, buried and resurrected Christ as their Saviour. They may feel guilt or occasional regret over some of their actions, but nobody can approach God except through the blood of the cross of Jesus. Faith in Christ is an essential precursor of forgiveness and salvation.
In a case like that of your father, it is too late for him to seek your forgiveness, but if he was saved, his sins were dealt with at Calvary and he is in the glory now. As you say, the Lord Jesus can give you grace to think of your father without bitterness. I have tried to lose my bitterness concerning childhood events ( I am now 73), and I know that I cannot do so in my own strength, but as you so rightly say, Eliza, the Lord alone can remove my sense of indignation. My father was a preacher too. And as my family served others, we had to put up with others a lot. We had to represent ourselves well mannered and correct. I developed lots of traumas because my dad was physically present but was emotionally absent. He was preoccupied in serving others. I forgive my father. He is gone over a decade ago. I love him. He was a good man but like any of us we all fall short in some ways.
What a beautiful, wonderful lady Ruth Graham is. I could listen to her all day.

I really appreciate this interviewer. She filled me with so much warmth and had so much compassion for Ruth, it was such an honour to watch.
What a powerful interview. Thank you for presenting this. Ruth Bell Graham wrote an absolutely wonderful book called "Prodigals and Those Who Love Them." She wrote it concerning the struggles she endured with two of her sons who acted out in rebellion during their young years. This book became secondary to the Bible for me during my own teen sons' years. I read it every day and kept it beside my bed for years. It's ironic that her daughters needed her attention in even bigger ways, but they were girls who had been taught not to show anger, so their personal pain was overlooked. Praise God for His great mercies towards Ruth, the daughter. I value the Grahams' testimonies in my family's lives.

I'm so sorry to hear about your son,I hope you are doing OK and finding some peace and support in your grief.
My heart goes out to Ruth Graham. I admire her courage to tell her story. I am sure many children of ministers, famous people, military & just busy people suffer in this manner. Its been this way since Jesus ministry, even before then. Moses had to leave his wife & kids to help lead the Israelites in the desert. It was later that they came there to be with Moses. The disciples followed Jesus, they left wives, kids (if they had them) behind to follow the Lord. They got the call to follow Jesus 'after' they were married, etc., therefore, it is ludicrous to say they should not have had children. It is the same way today. I am sad for the family members because they do get neglected.
In this case, the Grahams seemed to have been overwhelmed by their children and probably shouldn't have had any or had fewer children, so they could properly focus on them. Billy Graham was clearly preoccupied by his work to the point where he neglected his children. I think it's sad.
I am so proud of her honesty and openness... I am however completely appalled at this comment section. I see hearts of Pharisees littered in this comment section and it breaks my heart. I’m so happy that you all live perfectly but I warn a lot of you, please check your hearts.
I relate to her story in so many ways. It is a real eye opener.
Very touching interview! I can identify with Ruth where my parents interacting with me when I was growing up is concerned ( especially my father). He was very strict father and I had more fear than love towards him. On becoming a Christian and I as I got older i realized that he was the way he was because of how he himself grew up and he really loved his children and he just wanted us to "do the right thing " and not get in trouble. It was after he passed away that I really realized that.
Really enjoyed this interview. Listened to Billy Graham for years. You never think about what it must be like for the children of famous people.

I am so glad I watched this! I love Billy Graham‘s daughter, plus also the sister who is hosting! I felt their kindness and understanding about forgiveness, abandonment etc.! I felt I was abandoned by my father also, growing up, because he was in the real estate business and was so very busy and gone a lot! And I think even though my mother was there all the time, or most of it, that I felt abandoned by her also! But I have worked through a lot of that and forgiven them… Thank you so very much. Yes, and also with the Lord’s help for certain!
I can say as a child of the Mid-Century is, Fathers had a different parenting roles then now a days. Fathers now take more of a hands on role raising children. Men back then were primarily providers and distant. We stuffed our emotions and didn’t talk, didn’t feel.
I was born in 1937 and my father was a very hands on figure in my life. Probably not when I was a baby but for all my memory. He was always teaching me the things he felt I needed to know and much of who I am today is because of his teaching. Fathers always had the choice to actively parent. Many just didn't make that choice to be active parents. I got lucky.
Those following the Biblical model would have been.
The men in my life from birth ..my dad, pop, uncle were always more hands on than the females.

This is a vital insight, and a poignant reminder to keep our lives in balance. Yes, there are a lot of hurting people in the world who need saving, but we also are called to be there for our families. We must train our children in the way they should go, with healthy boundaries, freedom, encouragement, and Love.
Ruth, seems you've tried everything HUMANLY possible, but maybe now you should look into the spiritual realm & & start warring against the evil alters you have given legal rights to either knowingly or unknowingly to come against you , & take authority over them as you starr tearing down those walls once & for all.
Such a beautiful person. Just listening to this short story about her life has really shown me that I have to make the decision to forgive then ask the Lord to help me.✝️💜👍

Thank you for this honest interview. It really makes sense that something or someone was not taken care of when a person has a very public mobile life. I’ve had a similar experience and completely understand. My choice is to choose Jesus as my true father. I believe He has saved my life. Be blessed.

WHAT A RAW AND EMOTIONAL INTERVIEW SUCH HONESTY.
Her books are wonderful! I have all of them, and actually I bought the audio versions because my eyes don't cooperate too well anymore. And she reads them herself, so you can hear the inflections and emotions in her voice, which is something you don't get from a book.I also bought some of her sister's books too- all are wonderful.
This is the right message on the right day. I had travelled a lot and surely caused feelings of abandonment to my family members and friends. Even now as not being good in socializing and I hope those offended will forgive me.

If she had a dad and she complains,what of those without dads and still manage their lives?
I think she carried herself as the holiest human being yet was not that holy.
We grew up being told how we were supposed to be spotless and mirrors for others but inside we were empty.

I like her comment that you choose to forgive. Forgiveness is very hard for me. People have either criticized or attacked me (b/c I didn't and don't live up to the "Christian" ideals) many times. Nor do I put on a plastic face and pretend to live up to those ideals!! 99% of the time, the people who attacked me were "Christians." The non forgiveness is a huge mountain for me. I grew up in a home of extreme anger and so that is a hurdle to overcome also.
May our gracious Lord bless you Ruth and give you peace. You’ve been through so much and yet your kindness and beauty shine. What a testimony.

Great interview! We need more honest Christian interviews like this. We all stumble and fall. I loved her self-reflection and could relate so well. If I am truly a Christian, I will do as Ruth did. I will follow the path of my Savior and say Father, forgive them, they know not what they do and ask him to remove any resentment from my heart. Doesn't mean those that harmed me are still welcome in my life. It means I won't allow them to stand between my Maker and myself.
Billy Graham was not soft and caring person. He was energetic to preach but lack in compassion. We all are not perfect. I am very happy that she forgive her father.
There is some info out there that he was not what many ppl back then thought or made him to be....some very nefarious stuff has emerged about him. I don’t know whether any of it is true or not and don’t really care but I find this interview interesting.

I found that forgiveness is a decision we make. We just have to make that decision and God will help us to do it.
In one way this is a heart-wrenching interview to watch. But the thing that is more impressive is her unwaning willingness to let God guide her, even though the many people around her were honorable, but they still had feet of clay. That is why scripture tells us that every answer to every problem is utter dependence on the perfect one, Jesus, whether from prayerful guidance on fixing the lawnmower to fixing the heart. Scripture tells us to bring all of life's concerns, not some of life's concerns, before the Throne.

When I forgave my husband I didn't ' make the decision' it was impressed upon me by the Holy Spirit and it just happened.
@ Brenda D - Are we supposed to applaud you for that?? Not all of us are as "perfect" as you. We need a specific moment when we forgive a person because the emotions take over and make us believe we never forgave in the first place, as Ruth mentioned. I knew someone like you about 35 years ago. When people began to realize her narcissism, she became more and more friendless with each year that passed. I feel sorry for you and for those like you.

I feel bad that he wasn't there for his kids the way they needed him. I thought family was supposed to be a priority in the Christian life! My dad was up there in the Christian ranks with his PhD from Stanford and world travels but he ALWAYS took the four of us with him. We always had one on one time with daddy. He truly was an amazing man and I miss him more than words can say.
Don't judge madam, everyone has a different path... And he is not here anymore to defend his actions anymore
